Barry Manilow: Blenheim Palace; July 4th

I don't know if anyone is going to jump over to England anytime soon but on July 4th Barry Manilow marks a return to the UK, particularly at the Blenheim Palace for a one-night only appearance.
This is sort of historical in the career of Manilow because exactly 21 years ago, fall 1983, Manilow played this venue to a packed house {well, August 28th 1983 to be specific, a month sooner this year, so technically 20 years ago}.
this is an off-topic post of course!

AC,
I like Barry Manilow and wish him success on this special appearance in the UK. I wonder if this will be recorded or televised anywhere!? Did you know that Clay is also singing on July 4 but at the Capitol?
I think that Pamela created this forum so we could "stray" some from Clay topics. So I think it's OK to have a Barry Manilow thread. Barry is such a fan of Clay and so talented. Not many entertainers can write their own songs and accompany themselves on the piano!
Barry was on a repeat of Jimmy Kimmel the other evening, and I wish I had taped it. I think it was a repeat. I wish I could remember more about it. I think he had a long interview with Jimmy and then performed on the piano. I'm sorry I don't remember more! :(

i think it was on Kimmel's show that Barry announced that in 30 years Clay would look just like him...i hadn't seen the show because i'm at work over-night so i'm going by what people have posted.
the day i posted this thread i also ordered two Manilow DVDs. One is his 1977 TV special that won an Emmy and the other DVD is the original Blenheim Palace show in 1983.

HI AC - Barry had a Christmas special where he also said "This is what Clay Aiken will look like in 30 Years." At one point Clay was penciled in to appear on that special but apparently he had a conflict and could not appear."

i wish Clay would've done the show! i hadn't heard of that before!
well, we're 3 days away until Barry's show and Clay's performance in Washington!! i'm off work July 5th since it's the Monday after a holiday. i can't wait! i hope the PBS stations on my satellite air the show!! if they don't, i'll count on the picture people here to post some of the pictures!
the DVDs of Manilow finally came! i watched the Bleinhem Palace DVD and i was stunned at how he performed! i knew he was kind of "wild" in his younger days but i wasn't expecting all of what i saw! he strolled out in one segment in a "safari" costume and sung "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" while banging bongo drums!! there was no "Copacabana" on this DVD or "Could It Be Magic", or "Weekend in New England" either. on "Some Kind of Friend", which he called his "rock & roll song" he nearly made love with the piano, at least that's how i describe it!! it's something that has to be seen to be believed. it was sort of like Jerry Lee Lewis meets Barry Manilow
: i have yet to see the other DVD of his 1977 special. whenever i find the time i'll watch that one.

well, i bought them from a company called Starz.bz if you click the link below and it's
http://www.starz.bz/barrymanilow
and it should take you to the home page for Manilow's merchandise.
anyway, i've got the Manilow catalog in front of my face right now. they sent it to me with the two DVDs. they send you one with every order.
they've got a ton of DVDs and home videos of Barry along with his CDs/cassettes for sale. i'll soon be ordering the videos "Live in Japan" and "Live on Broadway".
did you know Barry made a movie? in 1985 he starred in "Copacabana" and he played Tony. Joe Bologna played Rico. Annette O'Toole played Lola. Estelle Getty, "Sophia" from the Golden Girls, plays in the movie too! anyway, it's shot in black and white because it takes place in the '40s in the hottest spot north of Havana at the Copa...
His 1985 album, "MANILOW", was his only one for RCA {speak of the devil!} and it served as a promotional tool for the movie since it contains the movie song "Sweet Heaven I'm in Love Again". this movie is for sale. i already saw it on Lifetime four years ago and taped it then but for those that didn't it's available now!!
once at the link, you should be able to follow the instructions. scroll down to the VHS/DVD section. there's a TON of things of his for sale!! the sections are located on the left side of the page.
i told you more than you wanted to know...
the only thing of Manilow's i've bought off eBay was his 1987 autobiography "Sweet Life" because i couldn't find it anywhere else

Barry Manilow from 1989. The CD he had out that year on Arista was the self-titled "Barry Manilow". In England, the CD was called "Songs to Make the Whole World Sing".
"Please Don't Be Scared"
was the hit single from the CD...it reached #35 in the UK.

AC,
I thought about you when I saw Barry on Oprah's show today. I hope you got to see it. I loved it when the fan didn't realize Barry was behind her, playing the piano and singing her favorite song! That was priceless!
A "new" Copa Cabana song. You don't think it's your "Boca Boca Cabana!"
(Just kidding!!)
I think I will get this album. It looks great!

MANILOW SCORES CERTAINLY SCORES WITH THIS FAN
Jerry McDaniel; a/k/a: ACcountryFan
This CD contains 14 songs from two musicals: "Copacabana" and "Harmony". To these ears, there wasn't a bad song on the CD. Some were better than others but none of them were awful.
"Copacabana" is re-recorded i believe for the third time. The song itself, recorded first in 1978, as Barry has often said, has shown some staying power for what was shrugged off as a novelty song in the planning stages. The story of Lola, Tony, and Rico is still here but hidden beneath a dance mix and added instruments.
"Sweet Heaven" was first recorded by Barry in 1985 and was included in the soundtrack to the COPA made for TV movie. This version contains added lyrics and a different ending. The original ending featured Barry repeating the title over and over against a recurrent melody...but this 2004 version ends abruptly. He sings "Sweet Heaven, I'm in Love" [glory note on the word "love"] and then sings "again!!" and the song ends right there! If you heard the original, which had a waltzy-dance feel to it, you wouldn't recognize this version except for the sing-a-long chorus.
"Harmony" is a great, almost vaudeville-type song with the bouncy vocal delivery. "Every Single Day" and "Who Needs to Dream" are my choices were the Top-Two songs on the CD.
Olivia Newton-John shows up and sings the duet, "This Can't Be Real". "Dancin' Fool" is a swing song i'm surprised didn't get included on his great 1987 album, "Swing Street".
The songs i didn't like as much were "Bolero de Amor"; "And What Do You See?"; "In This World"; "Just Arrived"; and "This is Our Time". However, i suppose those songs would be excellant if performed live, where a person can see Barry perform them. But as recordings, those aren't my favorites.
I'll rate this 4 out of 5 stars
