Hey Everyone!

I know it's been a couple of weeks since the big Cary, Asheville, Knoxville weekend, but I have just gotten around to getting a review written and all of my pictures edited.  I thought I would share a little about the weekend and also some pics.   Smile

Wow, what can I say about our big concert weekend except that it was SO much fun and Clay was just AMAZING!   I’m going to warn you all now, this review will probably be LONG because I don’t know how to do it any other way, plus I have a whole weekend to cover!  Laughing

I have been anticipating this trip for a long time because it was my big thing to look forward to after the Women’s Open was over, so it was as much a break for me as anything else and what a break it was.    I knew I was going to get to see great friends and also get to meet new friends as well.  I don’t even know that my review will do the weekend justice, but I’ll give it my best shot.  Wink

Friday night in Cary was, to sum it up in one word,  hot !!!  We started out with dinner at Lucky 32 which was great fun.  There were a ton of Claymaniacs there, many of whom I had met before, but a few new faces as well.  After a nice meal in the air conditioning, it was time to head out into the 100 degree weather.  I knew long before Friday night that the weather was going to be miserable and that we were going to be in for one hot night.  I’m not sure any of us anticipated what we got though.  A breeze finally started to blow a little bit just as the concert was beginning, but it was still stifling.

Clay came out looking as good as ever!  This was my first concert of this tour and for once I decided that I didn’t want to see or hear anything before seeing it live.  I’m really glad I made that decision.  I knew what songs he sang, but I didn’t know the order or any specifics.  It was so wonderful to just be able to experience the whole thing on Friday night.  I must confess that I am one who loves all the songs on ATDW.  I grew up in the 80’s, so those songs are the ones I grew up with.  I knew I would love seeing them live and Clay certainly didn’t disappoint.

I Want to Know What Love Is absolutely knocked me on my butt!  I loved the recorded version of it, but hearing that live was enough to make me fangirly right there on the spot!  wheee  Such power and emotion was evoked not only by Clay, but by both Quiana and Angela too.  It still makes me smile just thinking about it.  I enjoyed the TV theme section too.  I thought it was great and he’s just so funny.  All of the banter throughout the whole night was just so great and he and the girls are always such a joy to listen to.  Celebrity Fit Club, anyone?  Laughing  You never know what you are going to get! Laughing  One thing I noticed right off the bat was how much of Angela and Quiana’s personalities we got to see during this tour.  They both play so well off of Clay and you can see how much they genuinely like each other.  Again, so much fun to watch!

I have to admit I was surprised when the second half started and Clay came out singing A Thousand Days.  I knew he had taken it out, so I wasn’t expecting it, but was glad he sang it anyway.  I’ve always liked it, so it was great to see it live again.  I must admit that the Classics portion has quickly become my favorite part.  From the beginning of TWYMMF to the end of Beat It, he had me!  I love that he can have fun with things, not be serious all the time and that he is who he is and he doesn’t apologize for it.  It just makes me love him that much more.  I love that he does OPP!  Who would have ever thought you would see that out of Clay?  I sure didn’t, but I love it.

Moving on, Lover All Alone is just amazing.  I simply can’t say enough about the song.  It’s been a song I have connected with right from the beginning and I knew seeing it live was going to be powerful for me.  Again, I was spot on and it was phenomenal to hear it live.  That is an experience from Cary I’ll have with me for a long time.  Ending with Because You Loved Me couldn’t have been more perfect.  The sentiment of the song along with the glow sticks that EVERYONE in the crowd had made it a perfect moment.  You could see the emotion Clay had and that is always something to see.  Even though the Raleigh Symphony left a little to be desired, I loved every second of the concert.  It was awesome to sit with Mackenzie, Debbie and Angela and to be able to share that evening with them.

After the concert was over, we headed back to the hotel to get some rest so we could make the trek to Asheville the next morning.  Let me just say, I thought Cary was good?  The best was yet to come!!!  bigsmile

It took us about 4 ½ hours to get over to Asheville and we got there, got all checked in and then went to meet up with Woody, Lindsay and Glory to head to the pre-party.  The pre-party was at a Mexican restaurant called LaPaz.  It was great and again we had a fantastic turn out at the party.  I think there were about 20 of us.  The Maniacs were representin’!

I can’t say enough good things about the Biltmore.  It’s GORGEOUS!  What a picturesque setting for a concert, on the lawn of a mansion that is over 100 years old overlooking the mountains with a sunset that was just breathtaking!   Oh yeah, throw in a really cute singer and you got yourself something even better!!

Clay was hysterical on Saturday night!  He was in a good mood; you could tell from the very beginning, he was vocally strong and just so, so funny!  I know I keep saying that, but it’s so true.  The banter on Friday was good, but Saturday it just seemed that everything kept happening to give he and the girls stuff to play off of.  From the bats, to the bug that hit Clay in the face, the one that ended up in Angela’s shirt, to the handcuffs Angela tried to put on him during SexyBack.  Everything just seemed to be lending itself to their playfulness and it showed.  The crowd in Asheville was really into it as well and I think that energy fed Clay too.  I loved that the whole audience ended up singing the entire Brady Bunch theme song.  That was great!  The Asheville Symphony was incredible.  Light years better than what we had seen in Cary!   The show in Asheville was magnificent and when it was over I was buzzing with excitement because it was just amazing.

I did my first ever bus line on Saturday at the Biltmore too.  Talk about an awesome experience.  There had to be 1000 people or more in that line.  The line wrapped all the way around the lawn in front of the Biltmore House, which has to be the size of a football field. In order to get us all single file, Jerome had to pull part of the line into the middle of the lawn as well.  What a truly awesome sight to see so many people stay to see Clay.  Most of us Maniacs that were there stayed to do the buses that night and we were all together for the most part, which made it that much better.  I was lucky enough to get touched twice!!  I’m still not sure how that worked since I only had one hand out, but I got touched by both his hands, so there were no complaints from me!   Asheville and the Biltmore were a magical experience.  That will be a concert I’ll always remember.

It was another late night with us getting to bed around 2 am and then we got up early so we could make the trip to Knoxville.  Once we got to Knoxville we saw Gramma Barb, Wisc Barb, Sarah, Molly, Meesa and Marilyn at the hotel, all who had made the trip from Asheville and we got to see Frankie and Lewis, who had gotten in from Louisiana.  A little later we all headed downtown to the Downtown Grill & Brewery to meet up with the rest of the gang who had made the trip from Asheville, as well as Prissy, JoAnn, Jennie, Skip and also Pamela and her mom, Toni!  *waves to Toni*  Again we had a great pre-party with a great turn out!

The Tennessee Theater was only a block, maybe two from the restaurant, so we were able to get there with no problem.  What a beautiful theater!  We were told they had just spent 25 million to renovate it, so you can imagine what it looked like inside.  Very beautiful and ornate.  The seats in Knoxville were the best I had all weekend.  I progressively had better seats as the weekend progressed and I am SO happy that we had the seats we did in Knoxville.

Outside of Clay being hysterically funny again, being in a great mood again and also singing his tail off, Debbie, Pamela, Toni and I had the wonderful experience of Clay being RIGHT IN FRONT OF US during TWYMMF!!!!  He was seriously less than a foot away from me.  All I could do was stand there and stare!  Laughing  He is just so beautiful.  The eyes, the hair and this is a big concession for me because I’m not normally a fan, but the stubble too!  So, so amazing!  I have been close to him before at the book signing, but this was such a different experience.  I was literally in awe of the beauty that is him.  I was GAHing and GISHing all over the place.  I was again officially fangirly!  Not that I had lost it from Cary or Asheville!  When he was back by us there was a little girl who was probably about 8 or 9 and she had Down Syndrome.  She had been singing and dancing the entire night and just having the time of her life. We were just hoping that Clay would notice her when he came down the aisle.  True to form, he did and he crouched down and sang right to her.  All she could do was put her hands up to her face and cover her mouth.  You could tell she just loved it.  I love watching him with kids.  It’s always so special and this was no exception.  I’m so happy I got to witness it first hand!

The entire weekend was a magical one filled with so many great moments both provided by Clay and by all of my Claymaniac friends.  I am so lucky to have such a wonderful group of people to call friends and to be able to experience all of these concerts and moments with.  Clay may have brought us all together, but anymore it’s about so much more than just him.

I simply can’t wait until the next time I can see him live again.  He is truly a special man with a very, very special voice and such a big heart!

I suppose you would probably like to see some pictures too, huh?  Laughing  Here are the links to my pictures!

Thanks Heather, that was a great review!     I'm glad SOMEONE was willing to share some details with us!!

You had a nice group of fans there, and that cluster of concerts was certainly eventful and must have been amazing.  But I also must agree with you that being with your friends is at least equal to the concert experience in terms of fun, frolic and adventure.
Your pics ain't half bad either!     :fan :fan :fan

He is just so beautiful.  The eyes, the hair and this is a big concession for me because I’m not normally a fan, but the stubble too!  So, so amazing!

....another one bites the dust!....

Great recap of a great weekend Heather!  And your pics aren't too shabby either.....  Thud!

Can I also just say how hot it was in Cary?  I mean brutally, breathtakingly hot.  I'm surprised no one fell out...or did they?  Paranoid

The Lucky 32 gathering was awesome.  It was especially great to see everyone I already knew as well as meet everyone I hadn't met yet!!  People showed up that heard about it in the hotels.  I met two girls who had just flown in from Singapore that day to see Clay in Cary and Asheville.  I met a couple from Chicago who flew in for the show, and there were folks there from CB, CH and CV as well.

I was fortunate to have been on the 3rd row for Cary, thanks to my lovely friend Maureen, whom I *finally* got to meet, after emailing for probably two years.  *waves to Maureen... post already!* I thought Clay sounded best in Cary.  I hadn't seen him since last December for the Christmas show, so it was especially delicious to hear him under the stars right here at home; bugs and all.  Bugs were everywhere! Even in the audience.  The highlight of the Cary show for me was "Measure of a Man." Holy crap, it was amazing.  Very intense.  Did I mention how hot it was?  The song and the air..... I was a sweaty, misty, drooling mess by the end of the show; wandering around with eyes glazed over and a silly smile on my face I'm sure.  Hee!

The next day I had the pleasure of Claymaniac113078's and Maureen's company on the drive to Asheville.  How glorious to see my mountains again.  On the drive, Cindy, Maureen and I solved all the world's problems and then eventually found their hotels.  Thanks to Clandy and Lindsay for an awesome pre-party, and the scrumptious audio clack as well.  I had been invited by Loopy to stay with her, Lainey, and Mack in Asheville, through a ticket/hotel package offered through the CH.  Eleventh row!  But in all honesty, I would have sat up on the roof of the Biltmore with the bats just to be at that show.  The setting was beautiful; the mountains, the sunset, the estate....Clay.  Beauty everywhere you looked.  The highlight of this show for me was Lover All Alone, simply because of the sheer beauty of it all.  But, he was also SO hilarious in this show!  Angela and Quiana were "on" as well.  They both sounded amazing, and were hilarious as well.  It was also a little surreal; singing the Brady Bunch theme at the top of my lungs in the moonlight on the lawn of the Biltmore House is not something I would have ever dreamed I would do..... scary. Laughing  And speaking of surreal, the huge handshake line on the front lawn - my first bus line experience that didn't go bad! -  was something I will never forget. Me and Clay, in the dark.  Oh, and probably a thousand other people, but whatev.  bigsmile  No, it was special because I was with a bunch of maniacs.  And, I was borderline hysterical.  And, it was dark y'all.  The buses, parked all around the lawn waiting for us, turned on their interior lights so we could see better.  In that satellite image I linked, the gray area in the bottom left corner is where 3000 people watched the show. The bus line circled the front lawn, and another line of people went straight down the middle of the lawn as well, led there by Jerome like a conga line.  It all made for one of the best concert experiences I've ever had.

So far, anyway.  Wink

Next day, I drove to my parent's house in east TN and got to spend some time with my Mom and Dad.  Mom and I drove into Knoxville that afternoon, about an hour and a half away, and finally found the pre-party restaurant and venue downtown.  Thanks to Marilyn and Meesa for a fabulous party, and the great gifties, and also thanks to Prissy and Frankie for the awesome gifts as well!  It was nice to see Lewis and Skip there too, and meet JoAnn's mom Jenny!  The Tennessee Theater was amazing, just like Heather said.  Gorgeous and ornate, and decorated with some very avant garde framed art on the walls. Smile Again....amazing seats thanks to Sandhills Deb! You know, the dynamics of a Clay Aiken show crowd are quite interesting to watch.  From my seat, I could see all the usual clack-gathering suspects in the pit, Ethel, people I knew from Raleigh, from CM, from other boards, small children, young guys, men, and of course the usual multitudes of women.  I also observed the rose lady.  She had a rose in her hand, and she was really working the security guard to get backstage.  As the show began, you may have noticed Jerome escorting her from the front of the pit, if you were there.

It was nice to sit in comfortable seats for a change....to not be sweaty for a change....oh, and to have Clay right.in.front.of.us! during TWYMMF!!  He stopped to sing to a little girl across the aisle - which was wonderful, because she had been waving her arms and dancing up a storm the entire show - then landed right in front of us during the sax solo.  He said something like "play that sax!" then just sort of stood and DANCED HIS BUTT OFF! right in front of us.

Gah! ....and..... giiiiiiish!

I was trying to do the conference call, and I knew to keep the phone on the down low.  But Mom got zapped by security for using her phone to give my Dad a cellcert!  Hee!  The security in Knoxville was outrageous.  The girl beside me got busted too.  Aside from the drunk screamer in the balcony "sing Rocky Top!" the show was amazing.  Lainey had told me about the whip she and Loopy had, and that they were saving it for the last show in FL.  But I encouraged her to bring it out in Knoxville!  And she did!  Because, well, I wasn't going to be in FL to see it.  Wink  I think Clay looked awesome in Knoxville.  He was wearing actual shoes too.

Again, the bus line stretched for blocks.  Mom was a real trooper, and walked all the way to the end of the line.  Jerome was scoping things out, carrying handfuls of gift bags.  I left at one point, to go get my car and drive it back to our place in line so Mom wouldn't have to walk so far.  I kind of assumed I might miss him this time, but that was OK; I'd had the surreal Biltmore lawn experience so I was good.  When I got back with the car, I gave Glory some water and put her in the seat to rest, then I heard Meesa say "here he comes!"

Glory squeezed back into the line, and I didn't really want to force myself back in, so I walked down to the very end of the line.  I thought I was last, but I was really first!  As Clay and Jerome approached, Jerome shined his flashlight right in my face.  I put my hands up and said "no flashes!" which made them both laugh.  Hee!  One second...a fleeting touch....and he was gone.

I was so addled I got lost trying to get out of Knoxville.

But it was worth it.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat.  Always and forever.

Filling Every Empty Space With Clay

« Reply #7 on: August 26, 2007, 08:45:30 PM »

Thanks for sharing your memories, guys !

HEATHER - Your 3-night recap was a marvelous way to bring back memories through your eyes.  Thanks for starting this topic.  Wonderful pictures, too!

PAMELA - You did a great recap from your perception, too! It is so interesting to hear what particular song or image or moment was special to you.

Each concert was so special for entirely different reasons.  Cary, Asheville, Knoxville . .  3 different cities and 3 different venues.  Clay consistently brought us his very best.  My "stop breathing moment" was right after everyone but Clay was on stage and I would hear the music "Hear You Come Again" . . . then hear his voice . . .then actually see him! I love that indescribable rush.  It happened each night!

Meeting old friends and new friends is the bonus in all of this.  Not wanting the weekend to ever end is also a shared experience!  An unexpected airport visit with Woody, Meesa, Marilyn and Glory was the icing . . .  Wink    I could not ask for more!

Great recaps, Heather and Pamela

I was lucky to be at Cary and Asheville and both shows were magic--each in their own different way.  That is why we go to more than one show.

You ladies captured and had the words to express what most of us who were there felt.  It was a great weekend for me.  I got to see old friends and meet many new ones.  I won't start listing names because I don't want to leave anyone out.  Just know that I enjoyed meeting all of you and hope to see you at many future gatherings.

Thanks to everyone involved in the pre-parties.  I really enjoyed both of them.

Thanks again for the recaps--it was a weekend I won't soon forget.

Hope to see some of you during Christmas.

THE EPITOME OF DECORUM

« Reply #11 on: August 28, 2007, 05:29:22 PM »

He was magic-pure and simple. He takes those songs and sings the everloving daylights out of them. The show in Cary was HOT in more ways than one- the ending was poignant-tore at your heartstrings when he put his hands together. I dont know how he (or the girls) did not pass out in the heat. Especially dancing around for the Jefferson bit.  But he did it-and it was WONDERFUL.

Meesa and I had decorated the car with a poster that said "Honk if you love Clay Aiken" and white writing on the back window that said "I love Clay". On the looong trip from Cary to Asheville, there were construction delays, and someone was beeping. Well, in New York, thats grounds for a rumble- but when the car pulled up next to us, they were waving a Clay CD!! This happened several times as many of us were traveling that way. It was heartwarming and fun!!

The Biltmore. My lord, how beautiful it was. Watching the setting sun sink slowly into the mountains,

looking behind and seeing that beautiful estate, it just made your throat close up in wonder.
I held my camera up and turned it backwards, and didnt look at what was in the viewfinder, and this is what I got:

I had an extra ticket in the reserved section. I went back to the lawn seats, and there were many- and yelled out to ask if anyone wanted it. At first, no takers. But then a man came up and said "Excuse me ma'am-what do you want for the ticket" (I restrained myself from karate chopping him for calling me ma'am-he was not too much younger than I am) I told him nothing- enjoy the show. His seat was pretty far back. Debbie (Woodstock) and Lindsay had bought the other two tickets, and they said a woman sat next to them that had never been at a show- so I enabled a newbie!!! She loved the show! Makes me happy.

As Barb said, when that music starts, and his voice is heard before he is actually seen, well, it turns your knees to jelly and the butterflies start up. He looked wonderful. I loved his shirt- a new one- and the jeans were pretty nice too!!
Clay does not like me taking pics of him with my camera- he does something to it- this is the best shot I got:

The bat and bug banter were hysterical. And I too LOOOOVE what that microphone did to his voice. When he sang the low notes in Without You it vibrated to my very soul. I am sure that others heard it too- WHOA!! I loved the handcuffs bit- it was hysterical! The Classic portion was as ever, just totally hot- and from it comes this picture- NOT MY OWN- that I just ADORE and would like to make into a poster and plaster it all over the world:

A quick note- before the concert, as we were going into the actual lawn part, a security guard was calling down to another to get a bus for the lady next to him- her friend had been taken to the hospital and she needed to get back to her car. When the show ended, I saw the same lady up on the balcony and the poor woman next to her had her arm in a cast. Seems she had fallen and broken it. Also, she was supposed to have a meet and greet that night and of course she missed it. It turned out that CLay made sure she had the meet and greet at another show (possibly Knoxville) and he not only signed the item she brought, but her cast also- he wrote "Use your voice, not your right arm!!" What a guy!
All too soon the wonderful show ended, and we trooped out to the lawn and lined up. The line went all the way around the lawn, and then Jerome grabbed someones hand and brought people down the  middle. We were on the side by the buses, Meesa, Cindy, and I. The funny thing was when we turned around, who should be right opposite us but Glory, Pam, Heather, and the others! Here is a shot of the lawn:

Gratuitous HAWT baby mama save me shot:

This man could generate heat during an ice storm-hooooo, baby!!

I really enjoyed traveling with Meesa, Debbie and LIndsay to Asheville. You can find a lot out about people in four hours, if you ask the right questions. I love to talk to people and find out about their lives. Meesa, are you an only child?  lmao lmao

On to Knoxville with Woody and Glory- We had to switch cars in Asheville because the first rental company wouldnt let us take the car out of state- different jurisdictions. So we hauled the luggage out, and then back in again. Meesa and I are thinking of joining the teamsters union or the baggage handlers union. What? We would probably get good money!! and we dont damage stuff, like the HUGE hole I had in my suitcase after I got back from Nashville. I swear I had more socks before I left.

The Knoxville theater was breathtaking. I really should have taken more pics! Meesa and I had second row (behind the pits) There was actually no one in front of us in the first row.  At the end of the show, we saw the pit seats go down and the stage come out to cover where they had been. Now, why couldnt they leave it that way for US??
I absolutely adore the striped shirt Clay wore in Knoxville, It was very flattering. And when he came down off the stage for TWYMMF, we were praying he would turn to his left-but he went up the aisle. He did however, pause, right at the end of our row. That man is HOT and SMOULDERING, and I dont know how our girls could stay standing with him right in front of them!!

I have been to a few shows- when he sings MOAM and These Open Arms and Without You- each time I say- Now THATS the best. And each time he outdoes himself. The power, the range, and the emotion on these songs are just fantastic.
His voice was just superb. Lover All Alone in Knoxville- you could hear a pin drop. Its always the same when he sings that-it is silent except for that mellifluous voice, and the gentle sounds of the orchestra. And of course, on Because You Loved Me- the glowsticks made him smile. At every show I have attended, there have been tremendous cheers when he sings the line "Through the lies you were the truth" and it is so apt. We believe in this man, in his innate goodness, his compassion for others, his sheer enjoyment in performing. He touches our souls and brings us along with him.

The busline in Knoxville- I was cellcerting for CV and we all spotted him in his jammies at the same time. It was so cute! We were almost at the end (or shall I say, the beginning) of the line- and zip-there he was, and gone.

I have been so thankful to be able to go to these concerts, meet friends and "family" and just drink in the beauty and the joy and the experience that is Clay Aiken. I know he is just a man, but I so enjoy all that he is and all that he stands for- and I am grateful that he is sharing just that with all of us.

An excellent pictorial recap Ms Marilyn!

Love the Biltmore pics too -- I hope he plays there again next year.  As a venue, it was beautiful, the orchestra was the good kind of amazing, and the sound was above average.  Everyone I encountered working there was pleasant, professional and totally respectful of their guests, aka "us."

Loved the sunset, the mountains, and the company was most excellent as well!  Play it again Clay!

Hey, that's my Mom in your photo with Meesa and Glory!  But where's the pic of you, Cindy and Meesa with your blinkie crowns?  Hmmmmm?

Okay, so I'm not a writer...I'm a talker. Blah blah blah

Hey there everybody!!! wave

I finally got to see a 'real' concert.  bigsmile  I have seen two Christmas concerts previously, and I was totally enthralled. But I reeeeely wanted to see a 'Clay show". Know what I mean? The eyes, the hair, the hands, yes the feet, and of course experience the snark as only Clay can do and get away with..."C'mere!". Unbelieveable. Thud!

But you know what? I wanted to meet as many Clamaniacs as I possibly could. I am such a lurker. Good Lord. I live here.  blush  I know you more than you can imagine and I just love all of you. You are unique, amazing women and I appreciate all you do for this messageboard. Clapping

I so enjoyed the preparty in Knoxville and thank those of you who came bearing gifts and smiles and hugs. Huggles

I got to go to the busline!!!  Woo! We had a short wait but it was worth it.  I got a two hand touch. Two! Both hands!  Gah. wheee

Thank you, my precious Pamela for inviting me into your Claymaniac world and giving me the opportunity to meet these  fantastic women annnnnd...taking such good care of me!
You've opened a Pandora's Box here. We must do this again and again!!!!   BWAH!!!!
