Title: ARTS AND CRAFTS, TALENTED CLAYMANIACS
Post by: Jan on October 31, 2007, 08:24:53 AM
There are so many talented Claylmaniacs here that I thought it would be a good time to start this topic.
Instead of posting your pictures of; paintings, prints, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, anything creative, on a "topic" thread, why not post it here and then post a short; GO TO the ARTS and CRAFTS thread to see my latest............in your general topic thread.
So; CARLA, ANGELA, MARILYN, JOEMAMMA, MICHAEL (who does jewelry and sculpture) let us see your latest endeavors!!!!

SOOO , I will start with one of my oil paintings which I have already posted, but some may have missed.

Just wanted to keep this thread alive
SO

This is not a Claymaniac, but it is the closest thing to it as it is a drawing by my son, Glenn

It is called "Wonder Wharf"
I did post it before somewhere.

Still waiting for Carla, Joemamma, Angela and Sasha and some others to give this thread more interest!!!!!!

I always adore your paintings, Jan. :bouncy I love Summer Breeze. It's absolutely stunning. :clap

I think you've posted your son's drawing in the Artists Studio in the Fun Stuff lounge, if memory serves me correctly. :giggle It's a grand drawing, I must say. :bouncy

I haven't scanned anything for a while (haven't had anything done to scan :giggle Except a few comic pages I'm working on on the computer), but here's a couple of my works I like :smile :

Great thread, JAN!  Although I'm a total klutz when it comes to arts and/or crafts, I do appreciate studying and admiring the works of others.  I am privileged to have 3 of your works displayed in my home....one of Clay, an angel, and one of your Blue Notes series prints. :notworthy  I will try to take photos of them and post them here as soon as I am able.

Looking forward to seeing the talents of the Claymanaics on display!

THEA

You are very special and thanks for the nice words dear sistah!!!!!!

You ARE an artist. Just cannot SEE it. Too bad we cannot tune in to your piano concertos, etc. I still remember the time you played your beautiful piano for me. I will always remember. You are such a talented person.

Indeed Jan. We'll certainly fill it up if no one else posts. :giggle Though it'd be grand fun if more people did post as well. :bigsmile

And I'm so glad you like the cartoons. :bouncy :giggle

I still haven't scanned anything new, so again, something old. :bigsmile

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_sketchywitchy.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/sketchywitchy.jpg)

I just thought I'd show some concept sketches, just because. :bouncy And because the bigger works need some tuning before you actually start. :giggle These two are the main characters of the comic I've been talking about.

The first four are more kind of wild, since I just wanted to get my ideas down when I first thought of it (I got the idea from a drawing I had done last year of a witch kissing the cheek of a pumpkin :giggle).
The last two are more organized, for the pumpkin man just sketching out different kinds of pumpkins for his head (the round one won out :lol). And just a more nicer sketch of the witch's outfit. :bigsmile The outfit's the tiniest bit different in the comic pages (skirt's a little shorter, no stockings, shoes are a tiny bit different).

Medium: Just a regular ball point pen :smile

Anyhoo, I've babbled on long enough. :lol

love and hugs :hugg

Jan and Carla, great job… :clap :clap :clap I love seeing both of your work. I cannot draw even if my life depends on it but I’d like to share a needlepoint I made a little while back. My husband loves Japanese décor; we have a few of them around the house. Clickable...

Fantastic work girls!!!  Jan, you and your saw must have so much to talk about with all of your art work.  That is special.

Lolita, the Japanese needle work is fabulous.  OMG, that took you alot of time!  I used to do embroidery years ago.  Was that embroidery, cross stitch????  Gorgeous.

Carla, your work is so unique.  I loved the art in the cookbook you created.

These ladies are not claymaniacs but they are very talented crafts persons.  I found this on CH posted by geekette.

It's Christmas time! :: throws confetti ::

A bunch of us fiber nuts, um, fibre artists, have knit and crocheted some pretties for sale to benefit TBAF. We even jumped through the hoops to get on the approved list (scroll down, way down). Aron, who's in charge of approving this sort of thing, didn't, and I mean really didn't want us to use ebay, so we've set up a little shop on Etsy, where I'm adding stuff as quickly as I can. We only have about a third of our items listed so far, so check back again later this week for some more items. The prices start pretty inexpensive, but we'll up our average when NeptuneNancy's baby alpaca lace shawl comes off the blocking pins!

Crocheted snowflakes, felted stuff, scarves, baby stuff, women's sweaters - please come visit!

JEANNE, Your son is a fabulous artist.  Like Kim I also love the painting he did with the piano in the surf!!

CARLA, always enjoy your drawings.  You have such imagination and you are a unique talent.

LOLITA, the needlepoint you did is utterly fantastic.  May I ask just how long did it take you to do that????

THEA, my dear you certainly are an artist!!!  The only problem is we can't see what you do, sure wish there was a way we could hear your artistry on this thread.

And thank ya' so much. :giggle I really don't know where some of my ideas come from. :para :lmao Though I just get inspiration from everywhere, really. :bigsmile

It's not certain yet, but it's a VERY GOOD possibility that I'm going to tattoo apprentice. :bouncy Once Mr. Tattoo Man has his shop up and going, I'm going to give him a shout, show him some art, and we'll see if he'll apprentice me. :bigsmile

PRISSY

I AM NOT A VERY CRAFTY PERSON SO I LOVE TO LOOK AT GOOD CRAFTSMANSHIP.

I AM SOOOOO CLUMSY, JUST GIVE ME A PENCIL OR A PAINTBRUSH ,ETCHING SYLUS OR WOODBLOCK TOOLS AND I AM FINE.

ONCE I TOOK SEWING IN SCHOOL, THE TEACHER BANNED ME FROM THE MACHINES AFTER I BROKE TWO. THEN I TOOK A NEEDLEPOINT CLASS WITH A FRIEND AND ENDED UP WITH A SERIOUS PUNCTURE WOUND DUE TO THE NEEDLES. ARRRGGHHHH!!!!!!

WAITING FOR YOUR ART WORK. JUST LOOKING AT THE WAY YOU DECORATE YOUR HOME IS A WORK OF ART.

joemomma, I just made a little gif image on photoshop for it. :bigsmile :giggle I could have made it better so the eye lashes actually moved along with the lid, but I was lazy that day. :lol

I love Elphaba too, that's why I doodled her. :lol I actually don't have any sketches of the evil queen from Snow White, or any interpretations of her. :lol Whenever I try to make someone evil, they just look too cute. :para :lol

I LOVED your drawing of the Evil Queen on your MySpace, I must say. :clap :clap :clap :bouncy You should post it here. :bigsmile

Prissy, I'd love to see some of your crafty things. :bigsmile :hugg

Well, for your enjoyment (and for my amusement :lol) here's a whole slew of new sketches:

*NOTE*: I know some of the elves are kind of scantily clad (barely censored with stars on their bosoms :giggle) and should probably go into the Artistic Nudity thread, but I don't think they really need to, they're more than covered I say. :lol But if it's a problem, I surely will move them. :yes *END NOTE*

*clickable!*

The first one looks like Belle from Beauty and the Beast but in elf form, doesn't it??? :lol Second, just wanted to do those spiffily fun pigtails. :bigsmile :lol

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_ohgoodnessithinkitsclaudio.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/ohgoodnessithinkitsclaudio.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_demongalladypersonyay.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/demongalladypersonyay.jpg)
First one, I just wanted to sketch out a couple expressions. :smile I was listening to Coheed and Cambria, and thought of Claudio Sanchez (lead singer) so the screaming guy came out looking like him/is pretty much him. :bigsmile :lol I like how his mouth came out, I don't usually draw teeth that well.
Elf gals on the page, I dig um. :smile Second, I love her horns. :bigsmile

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_heythere.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/heythere.jpg)
:giggle I don't know, just thought it'd be fun to have a guy upside down saying hullo to someone. :giggle

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_awwsuchamushyscene.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/awwsuchamushyscene.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_dancewithmeswaywithme.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/dancewithmeswaywithme.jpg)
First one was drawn before the second one. I'm in a Christmas mood, so I sketched a couple elves under the mistletoe. :giggle I like how the guy came out . . . and his hand. :lol
Second one is just so smudgey in person (I kept erasing :P), but I really like it. I'll probably ink and color at some point. :smile With a kind of angel and kind of horned gal (I don't call them demons, they're too cute to be demons :lmao), I always like drawing the angel a bit more devious, just because you don't really expect it, I s'pose. :bigsmile

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_embraceme.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/embraceme.jpg)
I was thinking of what kind of pinup to draw, and this is what came out. :giggle Then I just added the banner, I thought it kind of fitting in an odd way. :smile
I'm going to finish this one as well, kind of make it more . . . tattooish. Like add some roses, maybe a nautical star, something along those lines. :bigsmile :giggle

And that's that for now. Hope you like.

Hugs, :hugg

Carla -  :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap It must be so wonderful to just pick up a peice of paper and just draw! I always love seeing your work.

Jan - I did take pictures of last year's  Clay  ornaments (I made over 40 ornamnets  last year in celebration of of the release of ATDW), but the pictures are somewhere in one of my Clay folders in PhotoBucket - if I ever come across them, I will post them!  This year I have only been making ornaments (I don't consider them Christmas ornaments because people have told me they leave them out all year long  :lol ) of Meet and Greet pictures. I think anyone lucky enough to win a Meet and Greet with Clay needs a little reminder of the Day!

EDIT - I found the ornaments picture from last year. I started making ones with the cover of ATDW and of the AI5 appearnce, but soon decided that I should just do the ATDW cover:

Okay, where's all the new art, huh??? :naughty :lmao

Jan, thanks so much, glad you like my sketches, means a lot. :hugg I carry a little sketch book with me every where I go too. :smile Fits right in my purse and is very handy. :giggle Though in that one, I just use my ball point pen, since pencil gets too smudgey on the go.
I absolutely adore the sunhat paintings, if I hadn't already said. :clap :clap :clap They're just gorgeous. :smile

Frankie, Thank you, so glad you like seeing my work. :hugg The sketches don't always come out like I want them to, though, is the only thing wrong with it. :lmao
Love the ornaments. :clap :clap :clap I've kept mine out all year. :giggle

Marilyn, love your work. :bouncy :bouncy :hugg

Well, here's my latest:

:giggle After meeting Clay, I doodled this in my sketch book and thought, "Okay, I need to finish this." and did just that. :giggle Inked and colored on my computer with my computer tablet. :smile Do you get it? I'm never coming off my cloud after meeting Clay. :bigsmile :lol :lol :lol Was really fun to do. This is the small version, since the big one was just . . . way too big for photobucket. :lol It's big enough to print, of which I may do. :smile

I'm going to do a second version with more texture and whatnot, and I'll post when it's done. :bouncy

Hope you like. :hugg

Love and hugs :hugg

:giggle It has more of a sunset feel, doesn't it? :giggle :smile I love how it came out. :bouncy

I know it doesn't look much like him (even though I used a reference :para), but, I still like it. :smile . . . and the costume's the tiniest bit off with the chicken (rooster??? :dunno), but it's just how it happened. :lol

And cartoon me's there, commenting on . . . well, him. :lmao And how I didn't get the attraction of knights before him. :lol :lol Version without me is in the OCD thread if you'd like to see. :smile

Thanks so much, Kris & Frankie. :hugg Was fun to doodle. :smile I'm going to ink and color it eventually. . .

Am I going to be the only one posting art again like the last thread??? :para :para :para It'd be so sad if that happened. :sad

Anyhoo, I've come with a new art I've just finished:

*clickable!*

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_emoangelFINAL.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/emoangelFINAL.jpg)

I can't type much at the moment, so here is the description from my Deviantart page:

Quote
Well, here is a character I'm currently developing.  He is brand spanking new, just came up with him a couple/few weeks ago, and wanted to sketch him out on the computer . . . then sketching led to inking, and inking led to coloring, and this is what happens.

This is not the final design, it's just how I'm leaning towards.

But anyhoo, yeah . . . He's the main character of a comic I'm working on, and he's this kind of . . . helper angel type thing . . . I don't want to give too much away, but he's not really emo, he's not technically an angel, but he is dead . . . so, yeah.

I'm not sure why I chose pink smoke for his cigarette . . . I thought it'd just look neat is all.  And I kind of made his clothes colors and the background a bit mute to have his eyes stand out, so you know something's up.

I'm not sure how this will look on some computers, since the one I'm on; the resolution's kind of screwy.  It'll probably look best on computers with the WIDE screens, so, just saying it may look the tiniest bit wonky to some, that's the reason.

All done in Photoshop 7

Hope you like.

And there you go. :smile Was fun to do. He's a bit more dark than most of my characters, which is fun for a change, I gotta say . . .

Hope you like.

Love and hugs :hugg

*clickable!*

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_doodlesyayWOO.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/doodlesyayWOO.jpg)

Just a bunch of doodles I did on the computer yesterday. :smile Was fun. Don't you love Clay's big smile??? :lol This is what I imagine my M&G pic will look like. :lmao Slightly, anyway. :lol

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_hoodieguycolorfirstversionWOO.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/hoodieguycolorfirstversionWOO.jpg)

Then I finished one of the doodles, and really liked how it came out. :smile I don't know why he has a broken heart (as you can see from the word balloon :giggle), but, it looks to be pretty bad. :sad

Anyhoo, there you go. :smile These may look the slightest bit off on some screens, they should look fine on the really wide computer screens, though. :yes Since, that's what I'm on. :lol

Hope you like.

Love and hugs :hugg

Jeanne, I don't want this thread to end up on page 2, as it is just too important for Claymaniacs to have a forum on which they can display their artistic talents.  Wow!  What a talented group we have!  :clap

BTW, happy birthday, Jeanne!!!   :hb2

I appreciate your post.
Yes. wish more people would stop by but there are sooooo many threads that it is hard to catch up with them all.

I have been MIA, not feeling too much like posting but lurking.

Picture above is a model for a Sunhat painting. I save sunhats and pretty scarves for them. This is just an example of the many hats and scarves that I have.

Next picture will be the beginning of a new Sunhat painting. I need the funny model so I can properly place a hat and see how it fits the head.

Cont.

As you see the "mystery ladies" are usually what I have in my head. They just seem to grow out of my paintbrush. Teaching life drawing for almost all my life, I can easily draw a person. NOW, the sunhats and scarves are another  problem . I need them.

I HAVE A SUNHAT SERIES AND A DOLL SERIES.
METHINKS YOU HAVE A "CLAY" SERIES

I WAS NEVER HAPPY WITH MY CLAY ART WORK. I NEVER DID REALLY CAPTURE THE REAL CLAY.
FREEHAND DRAWING IS THE PROBLEM. THAT IS WHY I NEVER DID A GOOD DRAWING OF HIM.
NOW IF HE COULD POSE FOR ME, IN PERSON,THEN I COULD DO ONE I LIKE.

YOUR SHADING IS PERFECT.

YOU SHOULD GET HIS AUTOGRAPH FOR YOUR SELF. SOMEONE ELSE WILL BENIFIT FROM THE SIGNATURE NOW. MAYBE HE WILL SIGN SOMETHING FOR YOU. YOU DESERVE IT.

TALENT IS IN MANY GUISES
FOR INSTANCE, WHEN I SEE YOUR LOVELY HOME AND HOW YOU  DECORATE FOR EVERY SEASON, I JUST AM FLABBERGASTED (IS THAT A WORD?)  I COULD NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS DO WHAT YOU DO. I THINK WE ALL HAVE A TALENT, IT JUST COMES IN MANY FORMS; MUSIC, WRITING, DECORATING, NEEDLEWORK, ETC.

BUT THANKS FOR THE NICE WORDS.

AND J.M

YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO DRAW FROM YOUR "HEAD" AS YOU CALL IT, BUT YOUR SHADING IS FANTASTIC IN YOUR REALITY DRAWINGS. AND YOU AND LINDA HUBER HAVE THE SAME STYLE, BOTH REALISTIC WITH GREAT RENDERING OF LIGHTS AND DARKS.

THEA

AND I AM SOOOOOO GLAD THAT THIS THREAD IS A "STICKY" THREAD NOW. IT JUST SHOWS HOW TALENTED OUR CLAYMANIACS ARE. AND THERE ARE A LOT OF YOU WHO ARE HIDING YOUR LIGHT UNDER A BUSHEL.

WOW, SEE WHAT I MEAN????? I COULD NEVER IN A HUNDRED YEARS DO WHAT YOU DO. THE NEEDLEWORK IS FANTASTIC. I LOVE IT.
WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE IF YOU HAVE THEM.

CARLA

NEAT DRAWINGS OF JOHNNY DEPP FROM SWEENEY TODD. I NEVER DID ANYTHING ON MY COMPUTER. LOTS OF MY ART FRIENDS USE THEIR COMPUTER A LOT, FROM PLANNING TO COMPOSITION, ETC. IT IS HARD ENOUGH FOR ME JUST TO USE THE PHOTOBUCKET, SO GIVE ME AN F FOR COMPUTER ART.

LOVE TO SEE WHAT YOU ARE DOING, YOU ARE A VERY TALENTED CLAYMANIAC.

J.M

HOW DO YOU START YOUR DRAWINGS????? LOVE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE BEGINNINGS.
AS YOU CAN SEE, M INE ARE POSTED. I SKETCH LOOSELY FIRST , THEN THROW ON A LITTLE PAINT SO I CAN TELL WHAT COLORS I WANT AND THEN MY HAND JUST GOES TO WORK. I AM IN ANOTHER WORLD WHEN THAT HAPPENS.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW????? MAYBE THE COVER OF THE CD???

WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE MY LATEST "DOLL" PAINTING. MY SON TOOK ONE LOOK AT IT AND SAID "MOM, YOU ARE SICK"

TALK TO YOU LATER.

WAITING FOR MORE OF OUR TALENTED MEMBERS; LIKE PRISSY AND FRANKIE OUR TIP TOP DECORATORS.

Frannie.... :clap :clap
That's cool! I couldn't do that. I'd lose a finger. Or two. :para

Jan....
I did just finish the CD cover...surprise surprise? :lmao

I just start em by sizing them and getting an outline. Then I transfer the rough outline to the drawing paper by coloring the back of my sketch paper with pencil, flipping it, and tracing.

Here's just the face finished on the cd cover...

(http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c195/kleone2u/th_firstface.jpg) (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c195/kleone2u/firstface.jpg)

You can see the outline...just giving me a starting/stopping point.
then starting hair...

(http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c195/kleone2u/th_hairstartshopped.jpg) (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c195/kleone2u/hairstartshopped.jpg)

I use a black marker to get around his face & hair...then come in with black acrylic paint
(http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c195/kleone2u/th_headdone2shoppedback2.jpg) (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c195/kleone2u/headdone2shoppedback2.jpg)

and then....he be finished! :lol

J.M

The way you start is exactly how Illustrators start their work.
Good explanation.

NOW, I wish you lived closer. Have you ever tried to paint in oils????
Painting is another matter, but I am sure you would do fine.
All you can do is ruin a few canvases

How about colored pencil??? Your drawings would take on a new dimension then.

But you are doing just fine the way you are. The shading is perfect. And teaching how to shade properly is a real chore. Very few get it right, you sure do. I shade with impossible dots , if you look closely at my drawings on my webpage. Sometimes I shade like you do, but I discovered this method of dot shading and I love ilt. Only it takes 5 times as long to complete as regular shading.
We both live in Florida, do you ever get way down to Sarasota??????? I have an extra room (my computer room) with a small bed, you are welcome, we could "art" together.

Keep on keepin' on!!!!!!

JAN

PS. My son lives in my studio , he would not bother you, ?????????

Thank you all for the comments. :smile

Jan, love the new sunhat painting. :clap
I would love to try painting sometime. I don't know where to start, though . . . I'm going to try airbrushing, though, in the near future. :smile My mum found my dad's airbrushing kit, and she gave it to me, which is kind of funny. How it turned up when i had been wanting to try it . . .
It's not actually supposed to be Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd, (kind of, but not really :lol). I was just doodling. :smile I tried to put Johnny in my cartoon style as Sweeney, but he just looked like a really mad Mozart. :lol
I'm using the computer more right now since I can't do too much art with an 11 month old around (I much prefer working with traditional media). :lol She wants to see everything, and see the sketch book, and play with my pen. :lol My first niece was like that as well. I don't know what they like about it. :bduh

Frannie, love the cross stitching. :clap I cross stitched many years ago (when I was 14/15 :giggle), it's quite relaxing . . .

Kim, Love the CD cover drawing. :wink :clap And your old work. :bigsmile I found about a bazillion sketch books when I was cleaning the other week. I may need to scan (take a pic) of something. :giggle
And I loved you showing how your drawings are done. :smile

Well . . . I feel like my art is just terrible at the moment, but I like these little cartoony things I've been doing the last couple days:

*click*
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/Sketchy/th_cartoondoodlescropped.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/Sketchy/cartoondoodlescropped.jpg)
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/Sketchy/th_cartoondoodles02smallyay.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/Sketchy/cartoondoodles02smallyay.jpg)

I don't know, just fiddling with a cartoony style, and thought they were cute, thought I'd share (done with ballpoint pen, had to take a picture again) . . .

I'm thinking of something I can do to enter for the Minnesota State Fair art exhibit this year . . . but nothing much has come to mind. :dunno I've been wanting to do something for it for the past couple years, but just keep forgetting. My goal is to at least get something submitted. :smile

I don't know why I am, though. All the years I've gone, I've never seen anything remotely along the lines of what I do (cartoons :P). Maybe I'm just being silly to want to enter something, but . . . I don't know. My art's not the best, but it doesn't hurt to try . . .

Anyhoo, enough of my babbling. Hope you like.

Love and hugs :hugg

Enter something girl! Your art is so fun and whimsical...it's fun to look at! :purpbana

If it'd be completely different from everything else entered -THAT'S what'll attract everyone to it! :bigsmile

Those mouth painters and feet painters are really good!

Maybe I'd have more talent with my mouth or feet than I have with my hands!

My scanner appears to be functioning poorly.  I'll have to take photos........stay tuned.

I love coming here to see what Carla, Kim, and Jeanne have done - good thing I can't draw - it's especially good that I can't draw Clay - I would never get anything else done if I could!  :lol

Carla - you should enter your art in every exibition that you can - a Fair is a great place to start!

I never thought about posting cross stitch (thanks Frannie  - I love your cross stitch, too - now Jeanne will be happy that I posted something besides Christmas ornaments!) I have so little of my cross stitch - I ususally make them as gifts to give away - but I do have one that shows my life's philosophy!   :lmao

I was telling Kim earlier that posting my cross stitch made me think about this art appreciation class that I took 25 years ago.  I don't really have artistic talent but I do appreciate art very much.  Our only assignment for this class was to keep an art journal.  We could put anything in it that we wanted to, in any form that we wanted to, just so there were frequent and regular entries.  I really enjoyed doing that journal.  It kind of forced me to notice more of the art that surrounds us every day, and it forced me to think about what IS art and how I define it for myself.

Well, I can show you more of what's in my journal later, but right now what I wanted to show you was that in this journal I made a few attempts at sketching.  I just used my regular old graphite #2 pencil and I drew these 2 from photographs that I took.

This is a metal sculpture that stood on a pedestal outside of an elementary school.  It's modern art, not supposed to represent anything in particular.

And this is also a metal sculpture that stood behind our recreational center.  It's very badly proportioned as you can see.  I think I just ran too close to the edge of the paper and was too lazy to start over.   :lol   I'm not a very dedicated artist I guess.

I don't think I have drawn anything since and this is VERY good news for the artworld.   :clap

Frannie! :clap :clap

I think you did good! The second sketch almost looks like a horsey from a carousel...
maybe it's the pole... :bduh

Ever notice the horses on carousels are always baring their teeth....? Used ta freak me out when I was little. :shocked

Ok...still does kinda...... :para

Kim, Frannie, Frankie, I am going to enter something, I just can't think of what I want to do yet. :dunno I have 3 and a half months about, so I'd best think of an idea and get something going. :giggle :hugg
I was on the website, and it said that over 2000 people entered and only 372 people were chosen to have their art exhibited. :para Not liking the odds. :lol :lol But I'm going to try, for if you don't try, then you'll never know, right? :smile

Frankie, love the cross stitch. :clap I love the saying. :giggle

Frannie, I think you did very well too. :clap And I thought the same as Kim, the second looks like a horse from a carousel. :bigsmile

Kim, thank you for the compliment. :hugg Glad you think my art is whimsical and fun, and fun to look at. :giggle
I was thinking that a little bit too, but I only worry that it's a bit too different for this kind of art exhibit. :para The only time I've had my art shown was in high school (the classes I had at MCAD didn't much exhibit their work. :bduh :lol) at a couple art shows the school district had . . . and I never won. :lmao :lmao The one I had in a show my senior year, I displayed at my graduation party and my grandma thought it was a horse. :para It was a girl. :laugh It was done in charcol, she had a big eye, and it was only her face . . . I don't know how she thought horse when she saw it. :lol I'll have to take a pic of it . . .

Anyhoo, enough of my babbling. Here is some old art:

*click*

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/th_bunnygaledit.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/bunnygaledit.jpg)

It's almost three years old (as you can see :lol), drew it for my best bud Simon, and yeah . . . I found it in photobucket, and thought I'd edit it a bit in photoshop so it'd look a bit cleaner. I'm happy with the result. :smile I absolutely hate her face now. :lol It looks terrible, doesn't it?

And there you go. Hope you like the old art. :smile

Love and hugs :hugg

I like doing stipple occasionally...for somethin different...

Kim ~ Have we seen your Edward Scissorhands or Pinhead?

Have you ever drawn Johnny Depp's Captain Jack?

You should try drawing someone who has alot of tatoos.  I'll bet you'd do a great job on something like that!

Or someone with alot of wrinkles like Tommy Lee Jones.

I was playin with inks and wash then.... :lol

Here's another ink & wash...this is LuLu..Louise Brooks...big silent film star...from her movie Pandoras Box. I kinda liked this one because she had the sheer black veil raised around her head and the wash worked really good with it.

Lordy Lou Ms. Kimmeh, can I borrow your talent, just for like . . . a day or so??? Seriously. :roflmao I feel silly posting cartoons when you, and Jan posts such lovely works. :thud :blush
I Love the Marilyn Manson one. The style just really goes with his . . . him. :lol I like him. Only a couple/few of his songs, but he seems like such a down to earth person when you see him in interviews. Not like the crazy, demon, person people make him out to be, you know?
And Edward and Jack, so cool, and everything else. :clap I'd love to see a Sweeney Todd from you. :bigsmile :giggle

The face on bunny gal just seems so off to me now, it being so old (yes, three years is so old for me with art :lol). I just don't like her face anymore. I still quite like the inking. I was obsessed with inking then. I have quite a few ink arts from then.

Well, here's one of my latest (I feel silly posting it now :lol):

*click*
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b54/SketchyD2/th_newchibiyayLINEART.jpg) (http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b54/SketchyD2/newchibiyayLINEART.jpg)

Don't mind the sample on there (was showing and didn't want anyone to take it, since some take lineart to color where I post). :shocked Um . . . this was the first cartoony thing I tried out the other night. Was done in ballpoint pen (which looks pretty bad from my pic :para) and I inked it on the computer. Coloring now. :bouncy
Her neck looks a bit off (like it goes off her should into . . . nothing :shocked). Hmm . . .

Hey...heard anything about that tattoo gig? My guy that does my tattoos said I could display some stuff in his new shop...but I really only have the Bride of Frankenstein that'd really "fit in" there. :lol Can ya see me putting my Clay's up in a tattoo place?? :shock   Manson woulda been cool...but he's long gone. :cry I like Manson too. :bigsmile

I like Marilyn Manson and Clay Aiken.  :lmao

Beth! :wave  You snuck in!

Jan...what would be the best kinda paint for a beginner? Acrylics?

CARLA

YOUR WORK IS UNIQUE, CLEVER ,AND DO NOT EVER DOWNPLAY YOUR TALENT. HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN DO WHAT YOU DO????  KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING, IT IS WITTY AND CHARMING!!!

J.M

A LOT OF BEGINNERS TRY ACRYLICS, NEVER KNOWING THAT THEY DRY SO FAST. IF YOU START IN OILS, YOU CAN LEAVE THE PAINTING OVERNIGHT AND THE OILS WILL STILL BE WORKABLE.
ACRYLICS ARE GREAT FOR ABSTRACT ART, AS THE PAINT IS FLAT. OILS ON THE OTHER HAND HAVE SO MUCH DEPTH. ESPECIALY IF YOU ARE DOING PORTRAITS, THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO.

WATERCOLORS ARE WONDERFUL TO WORK WITH IF YOU ARE AN OUTDOOR PAINTER. THEY ARE PARTICULARLY WONDERFUL FOR LANDSCAPES, FLOWERS, ETC. BUT TO DO PORTRAITS WATERCOLORS ARE THE MOST DIFFICULT.

I USED TO LOVE TO DO CELEBRITIES; MY FAVORITE WAS M ARILYN MONROE. HAVE YOU DONE ANY DRAWINGS OF HER.? THEY ARE VERY SALEABLE.

FRANKIE
YOUR NEEDLEPOINT IS VERY GOOD. SEEEEEE, YOU WERE HIDING YOUR TALENT, WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU DONE, BESIDE DECORATE YOUR HOME ARTISTICALLY, NOT TO MENTION YOUR GREEN THUMB.

FRANNIE
I ESPECIALLY LIKE THE DRAWING OF THE ABSTRACT SCULPTURE, IT HAS DIMENSION. MORE????????

LUV
JAN

Kim ~ He is really good!  Did he paint before he was injured?  Does he live near you?

Isn't it wonderful that he has found something that he can do despite his severe handicap?  Just goes to show ya that we all have talents, but sometimes we need to search for them.

I'm going to visit my mom today and I'll take pics of some of the needlework that I gave to her.  Heck, I'll take a pic of my mom too.

~ And this one is very special to me.  This is a door harp.  It's Swedish folk art.  It hangs on the back of a door and when the door opens and closes the marbles bounce off the wires and make a beautiful, gentle musical pinging sound.  It's so charming.   (http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q103/franniek54/th_IMG_2510.jpg) (http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q103/franniek54/IMG_2510.jpg)

So I guess this is at least partly where I get my fondness for folk art.

I'd like to meet mom someday

That would be awesome!  We go to lunch and/or doctors and/or errands every Wednesday.  Maybe you can join us some day. She lives close to the area that we will be going to on Saturday.

I would love to join you and mom some Wednesday as long as she doesn't mind.  :smile

Anyway, I did go to Mom's house and I did take pics of what she has in her house

I loved the pics Fran!  You did a great job on the cross stitches and I loved your dad's little animals...those are very cool and very detailed.  Amazing!

Very, very spiffy, Frannie. :clap :bouncy Your stitching is wonderful. :thud Everything you posted is very neat, I must say. :clap :clap
(By the by, I love your avie :thud I can't look away. :shocked :lol :goo)

Thank you Kim & Jan. :hugg :hugg :hugg I'm glad you like my art. :hugg It just happens sometimes where I feel my art is inadequate. Seeing such gorgeous art from gals such as yourselves, and so many people still thinking that cartoons aren't art, it just sometimes happens, is all. :yes

Kim - :lmao Yes, I do indeed owe you a sleeve tattoo! :lol :bigsmile Well, I'm living with my sister and BIL right now, being nanny for my niece, and it's an hour and a half away from tattoo man, so . . . yeah. :lol No, the shop isn't up yet, and I don't think it will be . . . anytime soon, really. :smile My sister called a friend of hers and has him on the lookout (he has a tattoo artist friend) of shops here in the twin cities to see if anyone wants to apprentice, so we'll just go where the road takes me at the moment. :smile

Yes, I like Marilyn Manson and Clay Aiken as well. :lol :lol Hand off a Clay drawing for the tattoo place, they'll love it! :giggle :bouncy

I love the Marilyn Monroe pics. :clap And wow to the painter there. :shocked :clap It is quite lovely, I must say. :bigsmile

Well, while I'm here, some art for you fine peeps. :giggle

Some probably remember this one from the old art thread:

From . . . October 2006, I believe. :bigsmile I still love it quite a bit, I must say. :smile Well, I had the lineart in photobucket, and thought I'd color it again for fun, and here's the result:

Last one, was done doing cell shading, the new one, I thought I'd try a bit more of a painterly/watercolor-ish kind of thing. :yes I quite like how it came out  . . .

Cartoon Me and Cartoon Clay if you didn't know. :giggle :bigsmile When my hair was short, now it's just . . . insanely long, :shocked :lol

Hope you like.

Love and hugs :hugg

I love it Carla! :purpbana  It really does look like watercolors.

Ok...first the guy who paints so good with just his mouth...and now this!

Ya gotta admit...he/she is pretty good! Better than meee!
HOW do they do that!?

I want one. :para

Err....I want a painting...not the elephant. :roflmao

Kim - you need to go to the library and check out "The Other Side of the Mountain" (or go rent the movie by the same name). It is the story of artist and teacher Jill Kinmont. She was everyone's choice to lead the Olympic skiing team in 1955, when she was paralyzed in a training accident. She has made a wonderful life with her art - and she also paints with her mouth.

Carla - if you don't stop "putting down" your art, we may have to get out Mama Boca's paddle!  :spank2  :lol Most people (Me Too!!!) would give anything to have your talent.

I love coming here to see all of the art -  :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap

Thank ya', Kim. :smile :bouncy Glad you like. Was fun to do, I must say. :bouncy
Woah, I want one of those paintings too (and the elephant :lol)! :clap I've seen elephants just paint before, but never draw an actual picture. :shocked

Frankie, :lol I'll stop, I'll stop. :lol I'm very grateful and happy that I can draw, sometimes I'm just too much of a critic. :giggle

Well, since my scanner hasn't been hooked up yet, I thought I'd keep practicing on sketching on the computer, and here's my latest:

*click*
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/WIP/th_meanddaftdoodleyayWIP.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/WIP/meanddaftdoodleyayWIP.jpg)

His anatomy's quite terrible, but I really like it none the less. :giggle Going to fix it sooner than later. :smile And it actually has a background! :oh Which I really like. :bigsmile :whoot And then going to finish the whole thing at one point. :bouncy I think I'm getting a bit better with sketching on the computer. :smile

For when I do have my scanner hooked up, I've done an inked drawing that I really, really love, and will share that when I have my scanner all hooked up. :bouncy
Here's a pic of it before it was inked if you'd like to see:

*click*
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/WIP/th_carlahug.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/SketchyD/WIP/carlahug.jpg)

Cartoon me, and Oh mah Lawd, not cartoon Clay! :shocked :lmao Um, but anyway, it's cartoon me, and my best, best bud. :smile He's having a bit of a rough time at the moment, and he sadly lives out of state, and our last conversation, I said, "I'd drive all the way and give you a Carla hug if I could." :smile He said, "I wish you could." :giggle
So I drew this for him as a surprise, and to make him laugh, for whenever he needed a Carla hug :giggle , and was going to send it out to him, but he's going to come back to MN for a few days in a couple weeks, so I'm waiting to give it to him in person. :smile
And I didn't ink in "Hug, Yay!", I just wrote that for . . . I don't know. :para :lol

Anyhoo, I think I'm babbling a bit, so off I run.

Hope you like. :hugg

Frankie, it is Mr. Simon (I think he's taller than Clay :shocked :lol which has nothing to do with anything :lol). :giggle I hope a visit will make him feel some better. :smile

Here is an updated version of the computer sketch for who want to see:

Jan, I love your sunflower hats paintings. My Aunt's sister-in-law always made us Easter hats with sunflowers on them so they remind me of days gone by. I'd love to  see your woodgravings. Get that scanner up and running!

Wow, shat incredible talent you all have.  Jan your work is fantastic. I love the sun hats.

I paint but I have no real true talent. I have only 4 paintings I like and they are copies of others peoples paintings. I like painting people and, abstract shapes. i work in watercolors.

My family are all very artistic, I was always the science/math one in the family. When I announced I was painting, everyone bought me painting supplies, books, tapes.  :lol

My Neice, ( a true artist), cornered me at Mom's memorial service  and lectured about downing my work. She pointed to an abstract hanging on the wall in my bedroom and said that is really great work. I broke a smile and said " ahh  yes my GEORGIA O'KEEFE, IT IS RED AND YELLOW :lol :lol
A watercolor of some mountains outside Taos, NM. It is a print I bought at the MOAM in LA.

I knew we had an "art" thread on this site! :thumb

On Thanksgiving Day, yesterday, we were with friends and new friends.  One of the couples, from Colorado, had been to an Art Museum in Oklahoma City on their way to Texas.

There were wonderful glass blown exhibits on display.  Here are a few:

This is a closeup of:

an enormous tree of blown glass tubes over two stories tall.

Here are beautiful colorful blown glass bowls:
