Title: Take A Step Outdoors
Post by: Tammy on July 01, 2006, 04:22:30 PM
Some of you who know me know that I love to walk, hike and enjoy the outdoors.. Many people have the luxury of traveling but with two sons in college and the price of gas these days I find  there are many places to go in  my own back yard..  I would love  for this to be a thread for us all to enjoy the places you  like to go where you  live or places that you have gone in your travels.. I enjoy seeing places that people have been and experienced..

This first place is a place that is in my own back yard.. It's called Bluff Point State Park located in Groton Ct.  It's around ten minutes from my house.. Here is a web site describing it..

http://dep.state.ct.us/stateparks/parks/bluffpoint.htm

The trail is wonderful... It goes in the woods and then along the water and there is a beach off of it along with cliffs and bike trails..   It is a wonderful place to take a walk all year round.. I try to take many of my friends here when they visit..  These are from my walk today..

Tammy - What a great thread to start!!  I LOVE to travel, (Clay concert or not), and I love to see the places others have been to.  That place in your pictures looks beautiful, you are so lucky to have it be so close.  And the deer picture - awesome!!  I would be there every day if I lived that close.  Thanks for sharing them!

I don't have much time, but wanted to start out posting a few of my pictures from when I was in Mexico.  I love the beach, and being able to watch the sunset over the ocean was amazing.  Maybe someday I'll move to a coast, so I can see it every night!

Tammy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How beautiful.  You picked the most gorgeous day of the year.  I don't remember the view being quite so beautiful; mabye that is because I was always talking or you were distracting me. :wink  Like Lorraine, I wish we lived closer too.   I am glad that you have Joe to walk with though.  I am sure he loves spending that quality time with you.

Sara, those are breathtaking pictures.

THANK YOU MISS TAMMY FOR POSTING THE PICTURE FOR ME.  IF YOU CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO ENLARGE IT IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY YOU CAN SEE A SPEEDBOAT OUT IN THE WATER WHICH IS LAKE HURON .  HE WAS A BRAVE SOUL AS I THINK IT WAS ONLY ABOUT 45 DEGREES OUT.  IT WAS THE FIRST PART OF APRIL AND YOU CAN SEE THE ICE STILL CLINGING TO THE SHORELINE.  THE PICTURES HERE ARE JUST FABULOUS.  YOU GALS HAVE A CAREER IN PHOTOGRAPHY I THINK, JUST EXCELLENT PICTURES FROM ALL OF YOU.  THE WATER IS SO CLEAN AND SUCH A BEAUTIFUL BLUE OR BLUE GREEN DEPENDING ON THE SKY.  WE GET SOME NICE COOL BREEZES FROM IT WHEN WE GET A SOUTH WIND.

LuvMyClay, OMG! Mau is gorgeous.  Does your mom and dad overlook all of that beauty?  I don't think I would ever come back to CT.  Thank you!!

Debi, I love the wild life you brought to us.

All of you have just brightened my day with these pictures.  I must think of taking a picture some day when I am in the woods :lol or somewhere interesting and beautiful like all of these.  Oh, then I have to figure out how to load them on from my digital.  I will learn.  Keep them coming girls!

This place is about five minutes from my house.. It's basically a path in the woods that has a bog with quite a bit of wild life... Although the wild life was hidden yesterday..    They must have been camera shy..  :lol  It's a nice short hike..  It takes about 30 minutes to walk the whole trail..

Oh my Gosh!  I LOVE this thread!  BooYah, Tammy!!!

What a beautiful world we live in, no?

And I may gripe about Utah (some things in this state truly do need to change) but I'm the first to admit that it's a breathtakingly beautiful place to live.  It live on the far north end of the Salt Lake Valley, and it's just gorgeous here.

Here's the mountains by my house:

Salt Lake City during the 2002 Winter Olypmics:

The gorgeous mountain view from Kandise's high school football stadium:

That's also what I see, quite literally, out my backdoor.

And I've never been there yet, but a place that looks beautiful to me...

My sister's ranch in northern California:  (That's my niece, Christine, on the horse)

As for my most desirable, most gorgeous vacation spot, I wanna go here:

What?

That's ... that's not what ya meant?   :para

Thanks for posting your lovely pictures.. :bouncy  Salt Lake Valley is beautiful..  You must be in awe of that beauty around you every day...... It reminds me of the mountains I saw in Washington State..  The most beautiful sites I ever saw was when I took a trip by car along the coast from Washington State to Oregon.... I felt like I was in another world...  How lucky we are to have such beauty around us..

Thank you, and to everyone else who commented about my beautiful state.

My sister and her ranch - that's like Nirvana for me.  I will go there someday, I'll get well enough.  That's the sister I've spoken of that I've never met.  I just found her a couple of years ago.  She lives in a beautiful place!

Tammy, you look so cute sitting on that rock.   I hope no one steals you.   Great woodsy pictures.

I was thinking that, too!  You're a cutie, Tammy!   :hugg  But then, that doesn't surprise me one bit.  You're a sweetheart, too.

Gorgeous pictures, everyone.  Thanks so much for sharing.  We live in a beautiful world, so many different vistas and climates, all with their own kind of beauty.

I love this thread.

Nice thread Tammy, thanks!  :thx

There is also a thread in the Photo Album in which there are lots of beautiful pictures taken outside as well; it was started by Moonshot, so check it out too!

This is a picture I took at sunset, it's the view from the back of my inlaws home in the country.

Click to make big :smile

This is part of the duck pond at the Buck Creek State Park, which is connected to the lake we went to yesterday. My sister and i were in a walk trail

This is me walking up one of the drive-ways at the lake...i have my eyes glued on a park bench by the Ranger's station
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/th_WalkingtoRangerStation.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/WalkingtoRangerStation.jpg)

This is me sitting on that park bench up by the Ranger's station :yes No need to click this one... :no
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Myscans/JerryAtThePicnicTable.jpg)

This pic was taken near dark as you can see...my sister and i spent most of the time on the fishing and boating side of the lake instead of at the beach where the swimmers were at. I am awaiting the landing of a space-ship so i can go on my long journey home...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/th_WaitingOntheSpaceShip.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/WaitingOntheSpaceShip.jpg)

This is at another walking trail at the lake...my grandfather and i used to walk along this years and years ago and watch the boats
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/th_StandingatguardrailatLake.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/StandingatguardrailatLake.jpg)

This is down near the water's edge...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/th_ViewoftheWater.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/ViewoftheWater.jpg)

My sister took this of me walking along the fishing section of the lake...don't need to click this one...

I took this picture as i was driving into Buck Creek park...there are no fences or anything and the duck's run wild...they saw my silver car and started leaving the road and headed back to the pond area...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/th_RowOfDucks.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/ACcountryFan/Morescans/RowOfDucks.jpg)

For whatever reasons, some of my pictures come out smaller than others...even though all the pics were taken on the same day and with the same camera...it has never made any sense. Oh well...some of them are bigger, so it's okay :yes

I remember the picture thread that Michelle started... I wasn't sure if it was still there. I do feel this thread is different then Michelle's.  When I started this It was meant to be more of a mini travel log of places you could go or would like to visit.   I love all the places I have seen so far.

Hey, Lorrie great pictures, but you came to my home area and I misssed you.  :wave
I live 10 miles down the road from Paso.  :shocking

What is the name of your friends vineyard?? The place is beautiful, but then there are lots of beautiful winery properties around.

I hope you got over to the coast also. This is beautiful country.

Tammy, what I like about this thread is that it takes you right inside the woods that you walk through, the trails, the cliffs and water below you or right in front of you.   I don't feel like it takes me thousands of miles away, although I love everyone's beautiful pictures.   Since I have been to Mystic to visit you, I can really appreciate all of the beauty you bring on.  I can't wait to see some of the other pictures of that beautiful and quaint town.   AC's were interesting, too, because it showed us another state and some of it's beauty that he likes.  I loved the ducks running around.   It is like a mini travelogue.   Good thinking.

We drove back along the coast.  It's a much prettier drive than the road we took to Paso Robles.  Actually, the vineyard is in San Miguel and it's called Harmony.  He's putting it up for sale and moving to North Carolina.  He also owned another property which he sold a few months ago to Nigel Lythgoe.  They plan to bottle their own label.

Angela... the shower pictures don't do it justice.  You'll just have to believe me.... :roflmao  I have a great shot from above the property, it's not from our camera though.

LadyC, I am sure you are going to get better so you can go to California and see  your sister.   :hugg  The Claymaniacs will pray for that to happen!!! You indeed have a beautiful state.  I have never seen such rock formations as in Utah.  Some lonely, desolate but beautiful areas we drove thru never seeing a car thru the desert area.   I had the best lunch I have ever had at a little resturant upstairs from a store in St. George . We traveled for almost a whole year and the west was my favorite.

TAMMY, once again thank you for posting the picture for me.  Such beautiful pictures on this thread and it shows how different each state is.  I have to say that I am partial to the west.

Sasha,

Just beautiful pictures of the area around Ashville and the Biltmore Estate.  As I said in the Garden thread, I visited there a few years ago.  Skip and I went to a wedding in Charlotte, and then made our way to Raleigh; my first time there.

Beautiful pictures by Marilyn, Lorrie, LuvMyClay,  Tammy and Pepe, too.

Tammy,
I started a thread called "Wish You Were Here" for vacation shots a while back.  It's way over on p. 4 now and just never took off.  I'm glad your thread is more successful.

Hugs,
Prissy

This is a photo from my cousin's backyard.  He lives on the water at Rockport,Texas.  It was taken last week on my vacation.  We had just returned from ocean fishing and docked their boat in their cannal which is about three steps from their back gate.
The seagulls, cranes and herons LOVE to go for the fish remains.  My cousin has a wild crane that will even eat from his hands but I think the seagulls beat him this time.  My cousin has named the crane,"Ickabod  Crane!" :roflmao

In South Central Colorado, we visited the Great Sand Dunes.  This is an amazing mountain of sand that seems out of place.  Because of the wind and a mountain blocking it, this 35 square mile area of sand remains where it is. (It's like a beach without water, but a mountain of sand.)

AC,

I take my camera with me wherever I go!  We have not had snapshops made from the digital, but I am going to do that in the next few days;  especially the pictures from Houston of the baby, my sisters and nieces.

It would be fun to take a course in photography, too.

Prissy

PS:  I am using clickable pictures because some people have trouble scrolling down when there are so many photos.  Also, I am able to have a bigger photo to click onto than would normally fit here on the site.

This is a picture of the Texas coastline at Port Aransas, Texas.  It is on Mustang Island at the very top of Padre Island.  The rocks in the  jetty are rose color granite.  This is a type of rock(expensive) used to make buildings.  I took it on my vacation two weeks ago.

I visisted my cousins in Rockport,Texas two weeks ago.  Their house is on a canal that feeds into the gulf.  The first picture, I taking it front the front seat of their boat as we're headed down the canal from their home to go out into the ocean.
The second picture is one of the millions of pelicans I saw and took pictures of.  This time of year, there are only the grayish ones like this guy.  Then in the winter months, they fly out and only the solid white pelicans come in.  This is the first"live" pleican I've seen.   When they take off and start to fly, they look like the old dinosaur birs.

Thanks Pepe,

I had a wonderful time down on the coast.  I love the sun and surf.   I just refuse to swim in the ocean because of sharks.  I only took 150 pictures and don't worry, I won't bore anyone with them.
If you remember the butterfly photo I posted in the garden thread a few days ago, I had it made into a 5x7 size and it is gorgeous!  The colors popped out  and the butterfly can be seen.

Debi, we see neighbors and deer and believe me I would rather see neighbors! The deer do so much damage. I planted 8 or 9 rose bushes and the deer ate most of them. I only have two left. Rose bushes are relatively inexpensive. The shrubs that they eat are not cheap. We have had to replace way too many.

Sasha, we had a deer in our yard resting under a tree at 11:00 in the morning a few weeks ago. It is rare that we see them during the day. I attempted to take pictures. The first one was way too far away. The second one was a little closer. I moved in even closer and the deer stood up ready to bolt and I snapped a decent shot.

I started to get even closer when it started to move so I went back to the deck. Hubby asked why I didn't get even closer. I said that I didn't want to get hit by a deer. He started singing Grandma Got Run Over By A Raindeer in his oh so monotone voice! :lmao

Tammy, you had such a great idea when you started this thread. We get to see areas of the country that we have never seen before and maybe never will. It could turn into a handy vacation destination guide.

Mary:  Im lucky the deer have not done any damage to my yard,  they like to eat my neighbor's jungle.  He walks through my yard and goes and eats in his yard :lol...  But I know what you mean my friend at work they eat everything in  his  yard.......  Mary I took those of the deer from my deck..... I have a pretty good zoom on my camera, wish it was a little better especially at Clay concerts.. :lol  Im practing of the animals in my yard getting ready for the concert.....  so that was a pretty good distance i took them from...

Mary...sorry the deer do so much damage....I still think I'd rather deal with that opposed to some neighbors. :lol  but isn't there anything you can do to keep  those deer away from your flowers and shrubs???? It must be frustrating to have them ruin your stuff...

Sasha...oh my gosh last weekend I was in norhern michigan visiting my mom and sister...and in my sisters back yard there was some wild turkeys too..I think it must have been two families cause there sure was a lot of babies...one thing I didn't know is that they fly and sit in trees...it kinda freaked me out when I heard noise in the trees...well it was only the turkeys practicing flying!!!! LOL

Tammy hello...I look forward to your pictures.....get some good ones...

hI EVEWRYONE, tAMMY THIS IS A NICE THREAD.

Sasha, we have deer and turkey on our land everyday. Every evening at about 5 the Turkeys walk down the drive across the front and over to the side yard. The last to days I went on the side deck and there were turkeys on the deck. we have gaggles of malesw and females.

The deer live here and at both my neighbors. One came up on the deck and ate off half the flowers on my ivy geranium.

Some things they wont eat.. Tall bearded iris, lavendar, salvia, daffodils,

When we get our new computer, i'll try sending deer and turkey pictures.

We also have a skunk, possums, racoons, mountain lions (i have not seen them but I heard one at the end of the driveway one night,) coyoties, foxes.

Jerry interesting Indian mounds. Thanks for sharing them

These pictures and post is  from Pepe..

The beach at Lake Huron and East Tawas Lighthouse. They are refurbishing the house connected to the lighthouse where the lightkeeper used to live. They will be renting it out on the weekends for a small sum and you have to work in the lighthouse. Cool huh? They will be having a Lighthouse Festival in October to tour all the Lighthouses around Lake Huron.

Lake Huron and the lighthouse is beautiful.. I am also lucky enough to live very close to the water but not as close as you..

Prissy
It's wonderful that you get to venture out to many different places..  I love your pictures from the Botanical gardens..

These next pictures are from a day trip to downtown Mystic... Many of the pictures are taken from the Mystic river looking across to Mystic Seaport where the old tall ships tourist spot is..  This area is around five minutes from my house by car and around a 40 minute walk by foot..  It was a gorgeous day so we walked there..  There are a few shots of the old draw bridge that goes up every hour in the summer time so the ships and boats can pass through..  There are also a few looking down the street at some of the cool shops that are located there.  The day I went was when they were having there Taste Of Mystic Festival.... It's where local restaurants come together and have samples of some of the food they serve at there restaraunts.. It's a good way of trying all sorts of things..

I am very fortunate to have such beauty on my doorstep..

Double click on the photos to make them larger..

The Mystic Seaport pictures remind me of the days that we spent with our boys when they were young. We used to go there often on our way home from our Cape Cod vacation.

Norm and I were going to go there for a day in August but the weather was so nice in Cape Cod we decided to stay there on our last day.

Tammy, love the pictures.  They all look very familiar to me since I have been there so many times with you or my husband.  You know our favorite little place to eat is a roadside stand right on the water there.  We can see some of the ships from there too.  I love that village.

Prissy:  How cute!  I love frogs, ducks, swans.  All of those water-loving creatures.

The pictures here are great.  I need to get some of my mother's backyard friends here.

Mary
I'm glad it brings back great memories for you..  Mystic is such a beautiful place to visit and to live.

Linda
Thanks!  I'm glad I get to visit there often with you and the other girls.. :hugg

These next few pictures are from Eastern Point Beach..  The body of water is at the mouth of the Thames River which goes into Long Island Sound.. The Naval Submarine base is not to far from the beach..

These pictures are different views from the beach.. Including old buildings and a cool house that was built on the rocks that can only be accessed by a boat..

The pictures also includes the high speed ferry that goes through there daily and a cargo ship.  We also fished on the rocks while we were there..

It's me again.  I thought that I would put some more photos in here.
The butterfly photo was taken this past July by me in Skidmore,Texas.  My great grandfather established this town in the late 1800's.  He gave the land to Texas and the railroad came into it.  So, they named the town after him.  This plant is in front of the "tiny" museum.  Look close and you will also see one of the hundreds of monarch landing on it.  It was a very windy day and the plant is swaying in the breeze.  Skidmore is very close to the coastline about 45 miles from Rockport, Tx.

I was here a couple of days ago and couldn't get the pictures to load but today they loaded fast.

TAMMY, your pictures are just fantastic.  What a lovely place to live.  There is nothing better than that nice ocean smell.  I love the water just don't want to be on it!  Thank you for giving such a beautiful tour of Mystic.  My favorite is the tall ships with their masts, just love them.

JOANN, finally I get to see your beautiful Alaska pictures.  How beautiful!  I see snow on the mountain!!!  Did your brother have  a lot of crops this year?  I think you told me the first planting froze?  Hope the dog is doing well !

Hello,

Skip and I just returned from a trip to the state of Washington.  I have "lots" of pictures, but will try to post only the "best" ones here.  I have also posted some colorful plant and flower pictures in the Garden Thread. I hope you enjoy our trip to Washington!

Tammy,
I really loved all of those pictures of Mystic.  Especially love to see photos with water!  How great to have a resort area practically in your backyard!  :bigsmile

JoAnn,
Great photos, too!

Hugs,
Prissy

Yes, that is a real frog in the picture above.  Skip snapped that one!!

There are some very tall mountains in Washington.  Two very famous ones are Mt. Rainier and the volcano Mt. St. Helens.  After we saw Mt. Rainier, we kept seeing it other times, too!  It became a joke with Skip and me that Mt. Rainier was "following us." :lol

MT. RAINIER

We did venture into Seattle and celebrated our 17th Anniversary with a delightful meal at the restaurant atop the Space Needle.  The restaurant revolves and we had great views of Seattle.

We drove to the west coast of Washington and stayed at Pacific Beach.  I was able to get some fairly good photos of the sunset on the Pacific Ocean. This is the best.

And the Pacific Ocean the next morning.

PARTING SHOTS

We flew over on a military plane, a C-40 and back on the same plane.  Flying to Washington (Whidbey Island), we only had 3 passangers and crew and returning, after a stop in El Centro, CA, we had the same three passengers , Skip, me and another military retiree.

Skip took my picture on the plane!

We found a great place to board our dogs, Shadow and Sandy, while we were gone.  They got a lot of attention but were glad to see SKip and me.

We had a wonderful trip and great weather the whole time.  Just a little fog that last morning.  Never any rain and temps in the 70's and cool at night!  Perfect week!
Hugs,

PRISSY, your pictures are just utterly fantastic.  We are so lucky we have such a beautiful country.  When people don't leave their own state to see all this beauty they are missing out on so much!  I didn't see any pictures of the fish place so I guess you didn't find it!  Thank you for letting us share in your wonderful vacation!

Thanks Angela, Pepe, and Frankie and....
Also, Dick, Lorraine, Woody, AC, and Linda for your kind words about our Washington photos.

I think I'm getting better at using the digital, and of course, Skip always gets some fantastic pictures!! We just have to remember to keep the camera charged and download before the camera says the "card is full;" no room for more pictures! :para :lol

Here are a few more random shots from our trip:

When we stopped briefly at the base in El Centro, CA, on our flight home, there was an Osprey, an unusual looking air craft out on the air field.

Debi, Sasha, & Mary,

I'm glad you enjoyed the photos.  We really had a great time.

Sasha,
Love that Fall Clay!!

Debi,
We bought my camera from CostCo.  I will PM you more about it later.  I do know that Clandy, Meesa, and possibly Heather have recently bought really fine digitals for getting good pictures.  I will check to see what they bought also.  I will say I have not been able to get a good shot of Clay on stage with my new digital.  It may be that I don't know what setting to use. :bduh
I agree that the spider web picture by Skip is really good.  If there is a photo contest for nature shots, I may enter that for him.

Mary,
I know you have been to some interesting places.  I would love to see some of your photos, too, if possible.

Hugs,
Prissy

Hello all,

I just received this email photo from family in Alaska.  My brother and family litteraly live on a mountain top outside of Fairbanks, Alaska.  They have lived there for over 40 years.  There home is a two story Swiss Chalet type log cabin with a view of Mt. McKinnley.  This photo is of their granddaughter, Mary and the manger. :roflmao This is a different manger and a different Mary.
It is a hay manger that they had just made for the goats winter hay.  They finished it just in time for the forth coming snow.

I don't post here as often as I should, but I do check this thread daily.  :hugg  I love all the pictures from various parts of the country.  So very, very interesting and y'all have some great ones to share! :thx

My hubby and I went to a Fall Fair in Western Maine last week.  I thought I would share with you how popular this event is here in Maine.  Here are some pics of the camping area that is across the street from the fair.  Look at the number of campers!! And this is only one small sampling of the number of campers there.  :smile  You can see the fairgrounds in the background.

CRUISE PART 1

We got back from our cruise to Jamacia, Grand Caymon, and Cozumel on Sunday - as requested, here are some pictures (they are not all of scenery, but I didn't know where else to post them - I have pictures of Food for Pepe and Evelyn!  :lol )

This is a shot of SeaWolf Park in Galveston, Texas, as we were leaving the Galveston harbor - the park has a WWII destroyer and a submarine that may be toured:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise2.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise2.jpg)

This was the view from our room on Monday morning - a little overcast, and just miles and miles of ocean - it took 2 days to get to Jamacia!!!

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise3.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise3.jpg)

This was taken at the Captain's cocktail party the first night onboard (we traveled with a group of 20 frineds from our town). That is me on the far right:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise4.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise4.jpg)

We enjoyed the track on the upper deck  of the ship every day - this is a picture of Lewis

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise5.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise5.jpg)

I did not realize that the island of Jamacia is mostly mountains - but it is - we visited a coffee/pineapple/fruit plantation, where we were cooked a lunch of Jerk Chicken, rice with red beans, and greens cooked with asparagus - a traditional Jamacian meal, we were told:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise7.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise7.jpg)

I took this picture, because these are NOT grapefruit - they are lemons!!! All of the plants were huge!

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise8.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise8.jpg)

A picture for me and for Pepe, because we both love ferns (this is Lewis again!):

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise9.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise9.jpg)

This is me in front of the building where we had lunch:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise10.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise10.jpg)

This shot shows how the land is terraced to grow the coffe and pineapples:

End of Cruise Part 1 - I don't want to lose a long post, so I am breaking it up!

CRUISE PART 2

I know anyone who has ever been on a cruise has had this done for them, but it is still fun to see - our Steward rolled towels into a different animal every night   :lol- I took pictures of a couple of my favorites - this elephant was wearing my extra pair of reading glasses when I came in!

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise12.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise12.jpg)

You cannot dock in Grand Caymon right now because all of the docks were damaged in hurricanes last year - we had to take small boats into the island - I took this one of our ship as we were going into shore:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise13.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise13.jpg)

This is a picture of us on the dock in Grand Caymen with our ship in the background:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise14.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise14.jpg)

This was taken from a "semi-submarine" - we toured a coral reef for over an hour - you can't really tell, but the fish in the picture was about 5 feet long:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise15.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise15.jpg)

You can barely see the diver feeding the fish outside of our window!

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise16.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise16.jpg)

Lewis took this picture of a sunset from our room balcony:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise17.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise17.jpg)

CRUISE PART 3

This is the part that is for Pepe, Evelyn, and anyone else who enjoys cooking and beautiful food presentation. I took pictures of the Grand Buffet onboard:

Ice dragon made from a 300-pound block of ice (we watched the chef make it):

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise19.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise19.jpg)

Bread display:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise20.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise20.jpg)

These lobsters were made from blown sugar - the chef blew them from a straw, just as an artist would blow a glass ornament:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise21.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise21.jpg)

A Watermelon Ship:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise22.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise22.jpg)

This fish is made from thinly sliced radishes and cucumbers:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise23.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise23.jpg)

This is a tray of salmon - the yellow fish in the background are made of cheese!

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise24.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise24.jpg)

Indian  (Mayan) dancers on the dock in Cozumel:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise25.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise25.jpg)

The open-air market in Cozumel:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise26.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise26.jpg)

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/th_cruise27.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/cruise27.jpg)

I have posted a lot of pictures (we took over 100!) There is so much to do on a cruise - too much to mention - but I have given a quick overview!

FRANKIE, all I can say is I would have been in my glory.  Utterly fantastic pictures and unblievable food.  The ice sculptures looked fabulous and all that wonderful bread I would have filled up on that.  The desserts and the lobster were fantastic, what artists they are.  The watermelon was something else all the work on that , the fish looked like it was made of cucumbers and radishes, who would have thought just beautiful.  I am so glad you went and that you had good weather.  A wonderful trip full of wonderful memories to treasure thru pictures and memories.  Thanks so much for remembering to take pictures of the food and I am so glad you are back home as I really, really missed you.  :hugg

Yesterday morning, Skip and Granddaughter Ashley went to the Water Gardens in downtown Fort Worth.  They have been closed for a few years and just recently repoened.

The Water Gardens of Fort Worth was featured in the 1976 movie LOGAN'S RUN with Michael York.

Well It's been a while since I have been here..  We all  have been so busy with our home lives..  Joe and I climbed Lantern Hill today.  It's located in North Stonington CT.  Close to Foxwoods casino..  It was a gorgeous crisp day out today.. Perfect for a hike..  The climb was very steep in some areas and leveled off in others..  There is another trail we will go on next time and that is one that goes around the whole hill instead of going straight up..

Here is a some information on it..

      Lantern Hill

NEARLY 600 FEET above sea level, its summit of bare granite flecked with quartz crystals glittering in the sun, Lantern Hill (or Tar Barrel Hill, as it is also called) in North Stonington has served as both landmark and lookout since the first peoples came to this region where the continent meets the sea. Tradition says that it has served fishermen and deepwater sailors as a day-beacon, guiding them safely into the eastern Long Island Sound ports like Mystic or Stonington, from the earliest days of maritime activity on the coast. Since the shimmering, white summit can be seen from many miles at sea on a clear, sunny day, the landmark tradition probably has a sound basis in historical fact.

By the same token, on a clear day observers on the gleaming peak of Lantern Hill can see five states -- New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont -- as well as more than a hundred miles of coastal waters. Sassacus, the fierce Pequot chieftain, was said to have stood on the summit many times, squinting seaward, eternally watching for the approach of enemy war canoes, or landward, seeking signs of hostile Narragansett campfires.

But it was an incident that occurred during the War of 1812 that finally gave this unusual height of land the names it is still known by today. Fearful of enemy naval attacks along the Connecticut coast, the people of Stonington had maintained a round-the-clock watch from the top of Lantern Hill since the troubles with England began. Then, in April of 1814, several hundred British sailors and marines had landed at nearby Pettipaug Point (Essex) on the Connecticut River and systematically destroyed an estimated $200,000 worth of property, including some twenty ships. When word of the Essex raid reached the Stonington area a short time later, the vigilance of the lookouts on Lantern Hill intensified and a system of warning the eastern shoreline villages of impending attack was implemented.

Huge hogsheads of tar -- the same kind used to preserve manila lines aboard ship -- were hauled to the summit of Lantern Hill. If a lookout spotted any sign of enemy sail, the men on watch were to put a torch to all the tar barrels, as a warning of imminent danger. The flames from such "lanterns" could, of course, be seen for many miles around. On the bright night of August 11, 1814, the tar barrel lanterns on top of the hill began to flicker. Immediately, the people of Stonington went into action. Women, children and the elderly quickly packed a few personal belongings into wagons and carts and hurried inland that very night, to seek refuge with friends or relatives in the country. The able men and militia headed for the waterfront to prepare the cannon for firing. When the dawn revealed a large British fleet standing into the harbor, apparently ready to land troops for a raid, the little village was ready, thanks to the timely warning.

For two days the British naval vessels milled about in the harbor, pounding the coastal defenses with an estimated sixty tons of cannon balls and shot. But the expected landing never came. When the enemy realized that their softening-up bombardment was having little effect on the Americans (who seemed only too well-prepared to defend themselves), the English broke off their attack, set sail for open sea and disappeared below the horizon.

Ever since frustrating the British raid at Stonington, its citizens have taken understandable delight in poet Philip Freneau's lines on the battle: It cost the King ten thousand pounds To have a dash at Stonington. And ever since, the place from which the crucial early warning was flashed has been called Lantern (or Tar Barrel) Hill.

Views from on top of the hill.. The building is part of Foxwoods Casino..

Here are some other random views.. Notice the ocean in the distance.. As the literature states you can see  New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont -- as well as more than a hundred miles of coastal waters.

Tammy - WOW!!!  Just beautiful!!!!!  Thanks for sharing the pictures.  I must say...I don't know if I could do that steep walking.  I guess all your walking keeps you in good shape.   :bouncy  I want to go with you next time.   :wink

Thanks Woody!
It's steep but it's not that long of a hike so I think you could do it..  You just need a good pair of hiking boots or good fitting sneakers.. Maybe you should make another trip to New England some time.. :wink

I thought this thread should be revived with summer just around the corner. :bouncy :bigsmile

This morning I was up (since I don't usually sleep at night nowadays :lol) and thought the sunrise was quite spiffy, so I took a couple pics from my sister's balcony:

They all look pretty much the same, but I like um. :giggle

Hope you like. :hugg
