TAMPA - If crowd reaction is any measure of who is the real "American Idol,'' give the crown to Clay Aiken. The spiked-hair crooner who looks like a younger version of Barry Manilow was greeted with screams from adoring fans, known as "Claymates," on Friday night at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Clay Aiken: The Measure of a Rising Star
Posted Cruiser on Sunday, February 22 2004

It's a showbiz paradox. The top-selling singer to emerge so far from the "American Idol" TV talent showdown did not even win the contest. Not that Clay Aiken is complaining. He is too busy leading the hectic life of an in-demand pop star to dwell on the fact that he finished in second place on "American Idol."

No Feet of Clay for This Idol...

In a nation racked by war and fearful of terrorism, where teen-pop stars parade about MTV nearly naked, and where a veteran diva reserved a shocking act for the biggest television event of the year, one humble pop star has emerged as the voice of decency and morality. If Clay Aiken was in charge of this crazy world, it truly would be a kinder, gentler place.

Not since the finale of the 1980s film "Revenge of the Nerds" has geek been so hot. With his tousled mop of coppery hair sticking up precariously, singing sensation and "American Idol" runner-up, Clay Aiken shrugs self-consciously as he tries to make me understand that he's just a down-home, geeky boy from North Carolina instead of a multi-generational pinup with a voice of gold.

Cheating on Clay...?

This past year, my life has been inundated with Clay's music. He is the only singer that I listen to and I listen to his music constantly. On my birthday, I was given a gift of two CDs by Josh Groban with the explanation that since I liked Clay so much, he was sure I would like to listen to another male singer. My reaction was to blurt out, "But I can't cheat on Clay!"

Clay Aiken has got the world on a string. Even though he technically did not win the title of "American Idol" last year, coming in second by the slimmest of margins to R&B-style crooner Ruben Studdard, that hasn't stopped America from falling head over heels in love with the boy from Raleigh.
