As Idols Soar, Music Industry Sneers
Posted Cruiser on Friday, November 28 2003

With the music industry losing money left and right you would think they would embrace anything that spurred sales. Each time an American Idol contestant has released a single or album it has represented a major event in the United States. From Kelly Clarkson's debut single to the recent release of Clay Aiken's debut album, American Idol singers have sold like hotcakes. Even Justin Guarini had a large enough fan base to drive his album into the top 30. So how does the music business repay the people responsible for this massive influx of cash? With disdain.

MoaM Certified Double Platinum by RIAA...

Not many graduating collegians can claim to have two platinum records. But then again, not many graduating collegians are Clay Aiken. Clay's debut RCA CD, Measure of a Man, was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) this week. Double platinum means that, in the judgment of the RIAA, the CD has shipped sufficient copies to sell over 2 million units. Clay was presented with a commemorative disk by RCA Music Group head Clive Davis during Clay's appearance on ABC's Good Morning America.

"Sometimes the world needs a voice...Let it be yours.
The Bubel/Aiken Foundation will serve to bridge the gap now existing for young people with developmental disabilities between full inclusion and today's reality. While on staff at the YMCA, Clay watched as children with special needs were turned away from programs due either to the lack of staff members trained specifically in working with the disabled or a staffer to participant ratio that was too high to provide the necessary support."

RCA To Release Commercial CD Single of "Invisible"

RCA should have listened to us in the first place. When you have an artist who only gets respect at the cash register, make use of it. Although American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken's "Invisible" was released as a promotional-only CD single back in September, sold for phenomenal amounts of money on eBay, and played a key role in Clay's album Measure of a Man spending two weeks at #1, it never entered the Billboard Top 100 Singles charts until this week -- and then only at #57.

Previously, I had asked the question, "Is Clay Aiken a True Idol?"; and wrote a follow up shortly after.

Clay is a Moms' Best Friend...

My friend Gloria Evans is probably too exhausted by the end of most days to be a crusader. The mother of two young girls, she spends large chunks of her waking hours on the 25-mile stretch of Interstate 95...She's not asking for all that much. Just a little decent music on the car radio. Music that's cool enough to suit her daughters, but decent enough that she doesn't feel like she has to launch into a sermon after every song. Could that be that difficult an order?

Taking On Clay's Critics...

Clay’s premiere album, Measure of a Man, has had huge sales but poor response from the critics. What is their problem? What do they want out of him? Can a million people be that wrong? Oh, I forgot. The astonishing sales for Clay Aiken's debut CD, Measure of A Man, is all because his crazed internet fans bought multiple copies and are using them as coasters and ornaments. At least that’s what some people would have you believe.

Clay Aiken was a phenomenon unto himself. On "American Idol," the show he was discovered on, Aiken was a standout before he even sang. The gangly walk. The goofy mannerisms. In short, Aiken looked like Ichabod Crane. And when he opened his mouth, he was Elvis.

MTV: A Genuine Pop Culture Phenomenon...
Posted Cruiser on Thursday, November 6 2003

A genuine pop culture phenomenon who unexpectedly transcended the instant fame granted by his second-place finish in the AMERICAN IDOL competition, Clay Aiken made a decidedly un-hip media figure, often looking and sounding more like George Bush's nerdy, Andrew Lloyd Weber-loving nephew than a sexy or dangerous rocker. Perhaps not surprisingly, Aiken (with the help of uber-producer/record-company mogul Clive Davis), has crafted what sounds like the first-ever secular contemporary Christian album.

As many of you may or may not know, Claymaniacs.com is based out of San Bernardino, Ca. which was devastated by the recent wild fires. This hit home for me as well, as a family home was nearly lost in the Big Bear area. Thanks to the heroic men and women fire fighters, it was spared. Tragically, many other families were not so lucky. Over 20 people lost their lives, including a fire fighter and over 3,000 families lost their homes in Southern California. I receive numerous emails a day thanking me, Pamela, and Melodie for providing a resource for all you ClayManiacs out there and we have never asked for anything in return....until now. Please open your hearts and make a contribution to the American Red Cross Wild Fire Fund to help so many displaced families lives a little easier to cope with. Thank you!

Dear Mr DJ: Will You Play Clay For Us?

...how does a single selling as many copies as "This is the Night" only spend two weeks at the top of the charts while being the best selling single for 16 weeks? How does a single such as "Invisible", from one of the best selling albums of the year, fail to chart? It has to do with radio play. Or, in this case, lack of radio play.
