Clay Aiken Shatters Sales Record, Making History With the Biggest Selling Debut in the SoundScan Era for a Holiday CD
Quote
Wednesday November 24, 9:00 pm ET
CD Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard Holiday Chart; DVD of Christmas Special Released Dec. 14

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Clay Aiken has had a phenomenal sales week. His new RCA Records Label release "Merry Christmas With Love," debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Holiday Albums chart. Clay's holiday CD made history by selling 270,10 units in its first week, making it the biggest debut week sales figure for a Christmas album in the SoundScan era. The CD debuts at No. 4 on The Billboard 200, the highest debut for a holiday album in six years since Celine Dion.

"Merry Christmas With Love" is Clay's first Christmas CD. The follow-up to his triple-platinum album "Measure of a Man," the holiday set features classic Christmas songs like "Silent Night," "Winter Wonderland," "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)," and "Sleigh Ride," as well as some of Aiken's personal favorite tunes of the season, like "Don't Save It All for Christmas Day" and "Mary, Did You Know?" He also covers Sandi Patty "Merry Christmas With Love." Clay's holiday album was produced by Walter Afanasieff and Phil Ramone.

Clay could be topping more charts soon, as a DVD of his NBC-TV Christmas special will be released on Dec. 14. "A Clay Aiken Christmas," with guest stars Barry Manilow, and Yolanda Adams, airs on NBC Wednesday, Dec. 8 (8-9 p.m. EST and PST).

Clay will also be seen on the special "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" on Nov. 30 and on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Dec. 6, "The Today Show" on Dec. 8 and "The View" on Dec. 9.

He is currently on "The Joyful Noise Tour," performing songs from his Christmas album in venues across the country. Aiken is traveling with a conductor and a 20-piece orchestra. In some cities, he will be supported by the local Philharmonic or symphony.

"This is a different kind of concert," says Aiken, who is setting out on his fourth tour of the U.S. in the last 18 months. "It's not meant to be a show where fans bring signs and scream. The goal is to be more intimate, almost semi-formal. The crew will be dressed up in their Sunday best and I hope the audiences will do the same."

During the tour, Aiken will appear in stores for book signings of "Learning to Sing" in Raleigh, Chicago, Cleveland and Orlando.

Eminem Still Ruling Charts

Rapper way ahead of Destiny's Child, Snoop, Lil Jon

Eminem's fourth album, Encore, sold a massive 871,000 copies this week, putting his sales total after just ten days on the racks at more than 1.5 million. In a week of huge sales figures, blockbuster debuts from Destiny's Child and Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz simply could not compete with Slim Shady, coming in at Number Two (497,000) and Number Three (363,000), respectively.

Other big sellers this week were American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken's holiday album, Merry Christmas With Love, which debuted at Number Four (270,000), ringing in the holiday record crush. Hits compilations from country stars Shania Twain and Toby Keith both continued their strong performances: although bumped three places to Number Five, Twain's Greatest Hits sold 232,000; and Keith's Greatest Hits 2, down four to Seven, still moved 221,000 units in its second week.

Tops on the tube Nov. 24

All three "American Idol" winners combine for a holiday concert. That's Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino. No, Clay Aiken didn't win; it just seems that way. ROFLMAO

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade a tradition for Brooks Crossing principal.

What began as a joke became a tradition for Brooks Crossing Principal Gary Abbamont, after he asked to be in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1998.    Mr. Abbamont's sister-in-law works for Macy's and when he jokingly asked if he could walk in the parade, she sent him and his wife, Katherine, and a few other relatives to clown college.    Sitting in his office at Deans School on Nov. 11, Mr. Abbamont recalled his experiences.    Today's Thanksgiving Day parade will be his fifth, having participated as a clown in three and a balloon handler in one.    "They teach you to read the crowd," Mr. Abbamont said, adding that he also learned how to play catch with the crowd with an invisible ball.
He said that in order to be in the parade, he and his wife had to arrive at Macy's Herald Square in midtown Manhattan at 5:30 a.m.    "They get you in costume, then you wait on line for makeup," he said.    After everyone gets his or her clown face, all the volunteers are loaded onto a bus.    He chuckled as he remembered getting on the bus full of clowns for the first time.    Mr. Abbamont said being in the parade is an unforgettable experience. He even remembers seeing students of his in the crowd one year.
"It was a really fun thing," he said.
He also recalls meeting pop singer Clay Aiken one year while walking around checking out floats and balloons before the parade began.

NEW YORK - Fantasia is the ultimate around-the-way girl.

From her short-cropped hairdo to her wisecracking slang to her sneakers-before-pumps look, this year’s “American Idol” proudly represents that often overlooked demographic: the girl from the street trying to eke out another day.(snip)

That may be the most important key to success for Fantasia, who stopped using her last name, Barrino, after winning “Idol.” From the start, she was clearly different from past winners: demure Kelly Clarkson, teddy-bear Ruben Studdard and squeaky-clean Clay Aiken.

Is ‘Idol’ glow fading?
Now, with this week’s release of “Free Yourself,” Fantasia will find out whether it’s enough to translate to commercial success. Based on the track record of her predecessors, she’ll probably have a huge start. The debuts from Clarkson, Studdard and Aiken each sold more than one million copies.

Yet there have been indications of late that the “American Idol” glow may be fading.

The Starr Report

Clay-ed Out

"American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken was forced to postpone the start of his "Joyful Noise Tour" after doctors diagnosed him with vocal chord damage. The singer's publicist reported that Aiken has been suffering from ongoing ear and sinus infections, and recently aggravated the condition during a trip to New York City to promote his book "Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music In Your Life." He planned to reschedule all canceled shows.

In the Grand Rapids Press yesterday about the American Idol Christmas special:

Quote
Christmas specials come earlier every year. We haven't even stuffed the turkey and Fox offers us "Kelly, Ruben & Fantasia: Home for Christmas." American Idol winners Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino will perform holiday songs. While it would be nice to see Clay Aiken show up as Santa's elf,
there's no truth to the rumor that Simon Cowell will play the Grinch.

Happy thanksgiving to y'all

U2 Sales Opens Big, Eminem Stays #1

November 24, 2004

It was an impressive opening day of sales for U2's new CD, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. One day reports from retailers showed the CD could be trending towards 900,000 sold for the week. Here is the number of units sold as reported by various retailers: Best Buy - 100,000; Target - 61,000; Circuit City - 32,000; Andersons - 20,000; Tower Records - 13,000.

Meanwhile, Eminem's Encore held on to the top slot, scanning  871,000 copies in its second week of release. Em debuted at #1 last week after only being in stores for three days. While many releases tend to dip in sales, it was another impressive week for Mr. Slim Shady and the music industry as releases from Destiny's Child, Lil' Jon & The East Side Boyz, Clay Aiken, Shania Twain, Snoop Dogg, Toby Keith, Usher and Chingy powered music sales, helping the Top 10 CDs to generate sales of more than 100,000 copies each, which is a notable accomplishment.
