Eminem's Second Week Better Than First, Destiny's Child, Lil Jon, Clay Aiken, Snoop, Chingy Bow

November 23, 2004

Yo yo yo. Merry rap-mas.
Eminem does his part to spark the Q4 retail rush, as his Shady/Aftermath/Interscope album, Encore, landed on top again with its first full week at retail.

In one of the best sales weeks of the year, Slim Shady proves formidable, selling 928k albums for a 10-day total of 1.7m. That compares pretty favorably to his last album, The Eminem Show, which sold 311k in three days and 1.4m its first full week out for a similar total of 1.7m back in June 2002.

But Mathers isn’t the only one to marshal consumer forces. Columbia’s Destiny’s Child landed at #2, with a robust 505k in sales for its full week, a modest 848% rise over the 53k in retail leaks. And TVT’s crunkin’ Lil’ Jon and the Eastside Boyz landed at #3, with 386k in sales after leaks of more than 34k last week, giving it an eye-opening gain of 1,014%.

Trans World/Wherehouse's Violet Brown was so pumped up, she threw a cup of ice at Ron Artest and ducked a roundhouse right before effusing: "Eminem is definitely the #1 rap release of the year, and Destiny’s Child is far and away the #1 R&B release of the week. We expected both to be real winners and carry us through the end of the year and into next year. Eminem is really in a league of his own right now. I mean, just look at those numbers. Since he’s come on the scene, no one has been able to touch him."

RCA/RMG’s Clay Aiken gets his yule on at #4 with 265k+, which beats a lump of coal in yer stocking any day, while Geffen’s Snoop Dogg (#6, 229k), and Capitol’s Chingy (#10, 123k+) round out the week’s Top 10 debuts.

Carter: Where were all of the fans?
Around the ACC
By Andrew B. Carter, Rocky Mount Telegram

Raleigh's RBC Center recently hosted five college basketball games involving local teams. Not that anyone cared, or anything.

Three of them featured the N.C. State men, a team ranked among the top 20 nationally and one that has a crazed, success-hungry fanbase. The other two games were far less attractive. They only involved four measly women's teams: one is three-time defending national champions. Another is the current No. 1 team in the country. North Carolina, a top 10 team, participated. And so did State, which is coached by hall of famer Kay Yow.(snip)
This is, remember, the best Pack team in 15 years, one that is led by the reining ACC Player and Coach of the Year, one that boasts a legitimate 10-deep roster and what? The arena is less than half full for its first two games. If Clay Aiken had sung the national anthem, middle-aged moms and their 12-year-old daughters at least would have filled the seats for tip-off.

Clay Aiken

Published on 11/23/2004

Clay Aiken has fond memories of holidays at home — driving 40 minutes back from Durham, N.C., to Raleigh with a fake Christmas tree sticking through the back windows of his packed car because his family waited too long to buy a real tree.

“Most of America is accustomed to things going wrong” around the holidays, Aiken said. “Those are the memories I think are the funniest.”

But one thing the self-described “skinny, redheaded, geeky little dork from the South” hopes goes off without a hitch this holiday season is his 21-city Joyful Noise tour, which had been scheduled to begin Sunday in Pasadena, Calif. Under doctor's orders, Aiken has postponed the first three dates of the tour, which will now start Friday in Costa Mesa, Calif., RCA Records said. Ear and sinus infections have affected Aiken's vocal cords, said a statement from the record company.

Aiken's management was working to reschedule the three postponed dates.

“This is a different kind of concert,” said Aiken. “It's not meant to be a show where fans bring signs and scream. The goal is to be more intimate, almost semiformal. The crew will be dressed up in their Sunday best and I hope the audiences will do the same.”

Aiken — plus a conductor and 20-piece orchestra — will perform a holiday-only repertoire from his “Merry Christmas With Love” album, which features standards such as “Winter Wonderland” and “Silent Night.”

Ruben, Clay in Sick Bay

by Josh Grossberg
Nov 23, 2004, 3:40 PM PT
Ruben needs rest.

That's the word from Ruben Studdard's rep after the second-season American Idol champ otherwise known as the Velvet Teddy Bear checked himself into a Birmingham, Alabama, hospital Monday night.

Studdard's Los Angeles-based publicist, Liz Morentin, says the silky-voiced 26-year-old is suffering from exhaustion. Per doctors' orders, Studdard is expected to remain hospitalized for the remainder of the week, forcing him to cancel several gigs in support of his new gospel-flavored disc, I Need an Angel, which hit stores Tuesday.(snip)

It's been a rough few days for Idol alumni. Last Thursday, Studdard's runner-up, Clay Aiken, postponed the first three dates of his Joyful Noise Tour, originally scheduled to kick off this Nov. 21, due to "vocal cord damage resulting from ongoing ear and sinus infections." Aiken's rep blamed the bum pipes on a promotional tour for his new book, Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music in Your Life.

Aiken, who will headline his own TV special, NBC's A Clay Aiken Christmas, airing Dec. 8, is expected to recuperate in time for a show Friday in Los Angeles.

Writing the outline is a triumph. You don't have to finish the entire thesis today.

Overview:
No matter what you said you were doing yesterday -- even if you swore you wouldn't change it -- you'll be doing something entirely differently today. Better not plan anything more inflexible than dinner out. No fair making reservations.

Daily Extended Forecast:
A huge wave of inspiration comes over you, and suddenly you have an urge to stop everything and create. You couldn't stop the ideas from flowing right now if you tried. You have your pick of the offers and invitations that are coming your way this evening.

Daily Flirt:
You're feeling good and romance is in the air. That's three days of romance in a row. What are you doing to deserve this? How is it possible that you can be having this much fun?

Daily Couples:
You're ready for a big event and rolling with energy and excitement. Share the love with your sweetheart so they don't feel left out of your good mood.

Daily Singles:
Get set for a big burst of creative energy. Surprise your secret crush or dig up a new method of attracting attention -- you've got the moves.

Inside Moves: Early releases pay off big for trio
Eminem's 'Encore' still No. 1

By PHIL GALLO
advertisement

Eminem
Eminem's 'Encore' repeats in the top slot, selling about 800,000 copies in its first full week of sales.

Three albums that saw their release dates moved up will take the top three places on Nielsen SoundScan's tally of the nation's music sales this week.

Eminem's "Encore" (Interscope) repeats in the top slot, selling about 800,000 copies in its first full week of sales. The album, released Nov. 12, will have hit a cume of about 1.5 million units in its first 10 days.

Columbia moved up by one day the release of "Destiny Fulfilled" by Destiny's Child, but enough retailers broke the street date to get it on shelves several days before that. In its first full week, the album will post sales in the ballpark of 490,000. "Crunk Juice" (TVT), by Lil' Jon and the Eastside Boyz, is looking at sales of 340,000. That disc sold 38,000 copies prior to its official release.

Three newcomers break into the top 10: Clay Aiken's "Merry Christmas With Love" (RCA) and Snoop Dogg's "R&G: The Masterpiece" (Geffen), selling 260,000 and 230,000, respectively; and Chingy's "Powerballin'" (Capitol), moving about 125,000 units.

Today Nielsen SoundScan will release sales figures for the week ended Sunday.

A number of acts that performed on the American Music Awards telecast on Nov. 14 will see bumps in sales as well. Among those who performed on the ABC kudocastkudocast were Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Maroon 5, Jessica SimpsonJessica Simpson, Gwen Stefani, Rod Stewart, Twista, Usher, Kanye West and Gretchen Wilson.
