National Inclusion Project: Our Story

Quote
The mission of The National Inclusion Project is to provide services and financial assistance to facilitate fully the integration of children with disabilities into the life environment of those without.

The Project will create awareness about the diversity of individuals with disabilities and the possibilities inclusion can bring. Through collaborations with the disability, education, entertainment, and media communities, the Project will recognize those whose commitment to breaking the stereotypes attendant to the developmentally disabled has broken barriers and extended the boundaries of the human experience for all.

To kick off this permanent thread about the National Inclusion Project, I'm happy to share with you an interview with Diane Bubel featured in the NC Autism Society Spectrum, Summer 2004 issue, which follows.

This thread will feature news and information about the National Inclusion Project and related projects.  You are welcome and encouraged to share anything here as long as it pertains to the foundation, Clay's other charitable involvement and activities, or your own personal experiences.  We will also incorporate the Arthur audiobook thread here, and any other special project information you would like to bring from the Inclusion Project site or other boards.
I hope you enjoy it.  Thanks!

INTERVIEW WITH DIANE BUBEL
NC AUTISM SOCIETY PUBLICATION - SPECTRUM
SUMMER 2004 ISSUE

Quote
Diane Bubel is becoming well-known as the person who convinced Clay
Aiken to try out for American Idol, and as a result has earned a bit
of celebrity all her own. A parent of a child with autism spectrum
disorder (ASD) and a board member of the Bubel/Aiken Foundation,
Diane has taken advantage of this unique opportunity to try to
educate the public about ASD.

Diane and her husband, Michael, live in Huntersville, NC with their
son, Mike who has ASD, and their daughter, Emma. Originally from
upstate New York, the family moved to NC in 1995.

We recently spoke with Diane about her family, Clay Aiken, and her
work with the Bubel/Aiken Foundation.

Spectrum: So, you are the reason that Clay Aiken auditioned for
American Idol. How did you come to know him?

Diane Bubel: My son, Mike, has ASD. About three years ago, our CAP worker left and we were in the market for a new one. We went to our local agency and they introduced us to Clayton (as he was called then). We liked Clay right away. He had experience in a TEACCH classroom, as well as some in-home experience, and he seemed like he would be a good fit for our family. So, Clay started working with Mike two days a week on community inclusion—you know, basic stuff like going to
stores, parks, the library, and focusing on making choices and
maintaining control.

Spectrum: What's the story behind the American Idol audition?

DB: My daughter, Emma, and I had been watching the first season of
American Idol. I remember thinking at the time that Clay was as good
of a singer as anyone on that show. Well, one day when he brought
Mike home from one of their outings, Clay was talking about the show
The Amazing Race, and about how he would like to be on it. Emma and
I looked at each other, and said to Clay, "If you want to be on TV,
you need to go on American Idol, cause you can sing!" Once the idea
was out there, we just kept pestering Clay about it and he finally
decided to audition.

Spectrum: Tell us a little more about your son, Mike...

DB: Mike was diagnosed with severe ASD when he was 2 years old; he
is almost 14 now. He's pretty much 100% nonverbal, although, he does
make some sounds and occasionally manages a word. He has obsessive-
compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as some strong sensory issues,
particularly with sound. While he has difficulty with language, Mike
really understands the need to communicate and really wants to make
himself understood. And, he does so pretty effectively through the
use of pictures and picture systems. He attends a school for special
needs children, but it is a school that is run just like a typical
school. So, he gets to really have a typical school experience. He
takes attendance to the office, plays on the playground, and it
really works for him.

Spectrum: What impact did the diagnosis have on your family?

DB: At first we were kind of in shock, it was like "Whoa!" Of
course, there was a period of grieving, but it didn't last too long.
We got to work educating ourselves pretty quickly. We just felt that
it was more important to learn as much as we could, than it was to
just sit around and feel badly. And, in a way it was kind of a
relief. I mean, we began worrying about Mike when he was about a
year old; he hadn't begun talking or really reached any of the
milestones. So, it was good to have an answer—something to focus on.
Later, when my husband, Michael, was looking for a new job, we chose
to come to North Carolina because of the level of service and
awareness the state has for people with ASD. Yeah, Mike's autism has
had a pretty big impact on our lives, but when it comes right down
to it he's just my kid and we really are just a typical family. We
love our kids, and like every other parent we want them to have a
happy life.

Spectrum: When did you become involved with the Autism Society of NC?

DB: I stated getting involved with the local resources shortly after
we moved to NC. Then, when Mike was in second grade, I became the
vice-president of our local chapter and attended several state
leadership retreats.

Spectrum: Tell us about the type of services that your son receives
and what impact that has made on your family.

DB: We've been really blessed and fortunate in the services we've
received. Although it took about two years to get, our CAP services
have been absolutely wonderful. I was perfectly happy to stay home
and look after Mike, but it was a lot harder for me to take him out
to do things. Mike's never been afraid of strangers, and we have had
some great CAP workers who have really been able to get him out and
about in the community. Mike has been to camp a number of times and
we have also received respite services. As Mike has gotten older, he
has had more opportunities, and I am much more aware of the kinds of
services I need to seek out.

Spectrum: Your name is on the charitable foundation set up by Clay
Aiken—the Bubel/Aiken Foundation (BAF). What is your involvement in
the Foundation and what does BAF do?

DB: First let me give you a little bit of history. After American
Idol, Clay was trying to finish up his B.A. in Special Education. To
get the few credits he needed to graduate, Clay did a research
project on setting up a foundation whose purpose would be to make
the kind of experiences that he had enjoyed at the YMCA available
for children with developmental disabilities. In the end, Clay
decided to set up the Bubel/Aiken Foundation, which is named partly
in honor of my son. I sit on the board of directors for the
Foundation and our mission is to support appropriate inclusion for
children with developmental disabilities. We are focused on
increasing the availability of opportunities for children with
special needs to experience typical YMCA-like programs in an
inclusive setting. We are dedicated to education the public about
ASD and other developmental disabilities, and we are providing a
grant program to help programs become more inclusive.

Spectrum: What do you mean by "appropriate inclusion"?

DB: I sometimes find it interesting that as the parent of a severely
disable child who attends a special school, I am spearheading an
inclusion movement. But, to me the key word is "appropriate." Every
child is different, and has different needs. We can't forget that
and it is important to find a form of inclusion that works for the
individual child—one that allows him or her to have the most typical
life experience possible. Mike is a great example; he has been in
both a regular and a special-needs school setting. And, for him, the
regular school proved to be more isolating and exclusionary. On the
other hand, his current school, one for children with special-needs,
runs like a typical school—he gets to be just like any other kid. It
is a type of inclusion that works for him.

Spectrum: You have been interviewed by many publications about Clay
Aiken, his work with you son, and having a child with ASD. What are
the things that you try to emphasize when you talk with the media?

DB: This has been a wonderful opportunity to educate people about
ASD—to really let people know what it is and how many people it
affects. I want people to realize that while they may be a little
different, our kids are just that—kids. As parents, we want the same
things for our children that every other parent wants. We want our
children to have full, happy lives. We want them to have access to
opportunities. And, we want to build communities that understand
them.

Spectrum: Do you feel that the public is becoming more aware of
autism spectrum disorders and needs of the autism community?

DB: I'd like to hope so. I think that we can continue to make a
difference. We've reached a whole new segment of the population—Clay
fans. They are learning about autism spectrum disorder, and they
want to learn more. We just have to keep speaking out. I recently
gave a talk at Washington Elementary School and I was so impressed
by how receptive and aware the kids were.

Spectrum: What progress do you hope to see for your son as well as
other children on the autism spectrum?

DB: When I think about the future, I realize that Mike's growing up,
and I am concerned about having a place for him. There are a lot of
options for children on the spectrum, particularly here in NC, but
there aren't nearly as many for adults. I hope that my efforts to
educate the public will help improve the options available to him as
he becomes an adult. As a community, we have to understand that
children with developmental disabilities do grow up, and that they
are still going to need place in that community. I'm certainly going
to keep talking about it.

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation

Mission:
The mission of The Bubel/Aiken Foundation is to provide services and financial assistance to facilitate fully the integration of children with disabilities into the life environment of those without.

The Foundation will create awareness about the diversity of individuals with disabilities and the possibilities inclusion can bring. Through collaborations with the disability, education, entertainment, and media communities, the Foundation will recognize those whose commitment to breaking the stereotypes attendant to the developmentally disabled has broken barriers and extended the boundaries of the human experience for all.

Vision:
The Bubel/Aiken Foundation envisions a world where young people with developmental disabilities are totally immersed in all life has to offer. The desegregation of programs, jobs, services, and educational opportunities will benefit children with and without special needs. We will build our legacy by breaking down the barriers that prevent families from obtaining the services and financial assistance they need and serving as a watch dog to make sure the public continues to keep those barriers down.

Creating Awareness:
• The Bubel/Aiken Foundation will lead the call to action for more people to consider a career as a special education teacher.
• TBAF will fund and support symposia, workshops, articles, and publications that address issues of the special needs community.
• We will find the creation of programs aimed specifically at serving the minority community in providing assistance and services to individuals with developmental disabilities, particularly those for whom English is a second language.
• The Foundation will develop curricula for K-12 that dispels stigmas and opens children up to all the possibilities inclusion can bring.
• TBAF will promote programs that celebrate the abilities of young people with disabilities and provide funding to enable their visions to become reality.
• We will collaborate with other organizations whose missions are aligned with integrating children with disabilities into the life environment of those without.

Aiken brings Arthur to life for AIDS fund

Quote
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK – "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken is among the celebrities bringing Arthur the Aardvark to life in a new series of audiobooks called "Stories for Heroes."

Aiken, who had been studying to become a teacher when he was selected to be on the Fox make-a-star show, says it didn't take much convincing to participate in the project, which benefits children's charities, including his own. "When the National Education Association and the Glaser AIDS fund asked if I'd participate, I said, 'I'd not only like to be involved, I want to be your spokesperson.'"

Proceeds from the "Arthur Celebrity Audiobook," available exclusively on Amazon.com through mid-August, will go to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the National Education Association Health Information Network and the Bubel/Aiken Foundation, which promotes inclusion of children with disabilities at school, camp and other activities.

"'Arthur' books were some of the books I used to read kids as a special ed teacher. Some of the most popular books for third to fifth graders were Arthur," Aiken said. "The show is one of the very few cartoons now that's not so commercialized; it's on PBS for goodness sake!"

When dealing with young children, reading becomes more like a performance, says Aiken. "You have to make the story entertaining, it's not like I'm doing Bill Clinton's audio book. ... For this, I had to do different voices for the characters and hit the punch lines a lot harder."

Other celebrities who can be heard on the "Arthur" book are Kevin Bacon, Marcia Gay Harden and Kelly Ripa with music recorded by Ziggy Marley.

Official Announcement

"Wrapping for Inclusion"
November 26, 2004 – December 25, 2004

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation is excited to announce a nationwide holiday gift-wrapping fundraiser, "Wrapping for Inclusion." During the holiday season, area stores and shopping malls normally set up gift-wrapping booths for their customers. The Bubel/Aiken Foundation volunteers will work the booths for the stores and malls.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in any way possible. Schools can make this a community service project putting together teams of children with and without disabilities.

At the present time we are looking for volunteers to fill the following roles:

Web Designer/Host (We do have a volunteer that will write the copy and update the site. This person will work closely with the Web Designer).

State coordinators to organize and recruit volunteers in the various cities in their state. The state coordinators will be available to answer questions and troubleshoot to all city team leaders in their region. It will be the responsibility of the state coordinators to arrange and collect the money raised in the individual cities and forward that money to the project coordinator.

City team leaders have the most important responsibility of all, which is to contact the local shopping malls and department stores (Barnes and Noble, Borders both welcome non-profit groups to work their gift-wrapping booths on most holidays throughout the year) to arrange dates and times for the booths to be manned. The city team leader will have the responsibility of scheduling volunteers for the booths throughout their city. Additionally, the team leader will collect the money from the various booths throughout the city and forward that money to their state coordinator.

Wrappers, everyone is invited to participate in this fun holiday event. You can volunteer for as much time as you can, whether it is for 4 hours on one day or for 4 hours on several days. Your city team leader will set the schedule.

For more information and to volunteer for this fun holiday event send an email to, wrappingforinclusion@kc.rr.com. Be sure to include your full name, email address, city and state. Watch for the announcement of the opening of our website coming soon!

Hi everyone,
I am new to this board so I first would like to say Hello to all of you! I would also like to ask for your help. I am the state cordinator for Ohio and I am desperate need of help! I was given this job at the last min. because the two people that were originally going to do it ended up not being able to. So I offered to step in where they left off. Unfortunatly Ohio is REALLY short on City cordinators and wrappers so if you would like to help with doing any of these jobs PLEASE contact me ASAP!!!!! I need as many people from Ohio as I can get! Thanks for your help I hope to hear from all of you soon! You can e-mail me ANYTIME at Julie@VideoExpressions.biz Thanks again! (also feel free to send me a message though any of my instant message programs!) Thanks everyone!

Toys for Tots 2004 Celebrity Spokesperson will be CLAY AIKEN!!

We are so excited to be making this announcement as we have been waiting so patiently to get the word that we could announce it.

Clay has already finished taping some Public Service Announcements and there will be much more to come.

We will shortly, through the wonderful assistance of Major Bill Grein and the “Entango” Corporation be able to put up a very special fund, the Clay Aiken Fans Toys For Tots Fund, designed by Entango, and accounted for by Toys for Tots.

Updates will be given on a regular basis as the to the amount in this very special fund. ALL DONATIONS TO THIS FUND WILL BE TAX DEDUCTIBLE. All donations over $250.00 will receive a “hard copy” receipt also in the mail approximately 2 weeks after the donation is made.

The technical details are being designed at this time, and the links should be up by mid week. In the meantime, starting tonight at 8:00 pm, ALL DONATIONS TO THE OCS FUND WILL BE DEPOSITED INTO THE SPECIAL CLAY AIKEN FANS TOYS FOR TOTS FUND AS SOON AS THE LINK IS UP. Links will be provided at The Clayboard, The OCS Website, The ClayDawgs Website and Clayaikenworld.
