WWW
« on: December 29, 2003, 09:19:16 PM »

Lots of people post here and email me about how to  post a picture in the Photo album.  Here's how:

Pictures saved on your hard drive must be uploaded to a hosting service on the internet first before they can be posted here on Claymaniacs.

Examples of hosting services are:

http://www.villagephotos.com   allows external linking for posting photos on this site

http://www.photobucket.com    FREE and allows external linking for posting photos on this site

http://imageshack.us/index3.php   FREE and allows external linking for posting photos on this site

You will have to register at the site, then follow their instructions for uploading your pictures onto their server.  Instructions are below in subsequent posts. Most of these services are free with limited space.  Additional storage space will cost you.

When you have established an account at the hosting site, and uploaded your pictures there, you can then right click the picture and copy the URL assigned to the picture.

Paste the URL into the message box in The Photo Album thread.  Highlight the URL and then click the 'Img' box at the top of the message box.

Click 'Submit' and your picture should show up in the thread.

It sounds more complicated than it really is, trust me.  If you have any questions, post them in this thread and I or others will try to help you.

Give it a try!  Practice posting pictures in this thread.

Instructions on how to use www.villagephotos.com.

Village photos is free to join and gives you room for uploading 25 photos (120k each) and 5mb of transfer bandwidth. They have recently upgraded their servers and are now again allowing external linking to the free accounts. Plan 'X' no longer exists (unless you already are signed up for that plan, then you can renew).

For information on their other plans that allow for more photos and more bandwidth go here.

UPLOADING PHOTOS TO VILLAGEPHOTOS

After registering, you’ll need to create an album.
At the top of the page choose NEW ALBUM, this will allow you to name your album.
Once you’ve created an album, click on it.
Once you’ve entered the album, there will be an option to UPLOAD NEW IMAGES.

NOTE: Images Must Be GIF or JPG image files. If you have BMP, TIF, PNG, or other image type, you'll have to convert it to a GIF or JPG image using an image utility, or by re-saving it from the original application as a GIF or JPG.

Size Note : Free accounts are limited to 120K images. For all other account types, images must be under 3MB (3,000,000 bytes). For performance reasons, the upload process is also limited to 3MB at a time. If you have multiple images to upload that total more than 3MB, please upload them one at a time.

**Left click the UPLOAD NEW IMAGES button. This will bring up a page that has 2 options for uploading:

OPTION ONE:

The Uploader Utility(available only to upgraded members)

There is a link to take you to the uploader…the program must first be downloaded to your computer but is well worth it. It allowed me to upload all 150 of my tour photos at once…instead of the search and click method that uploads 2 – 6 photos at a time.

**Once you’ve loaded the program (Java Sun), click on the CHOOSE PHOTOS button in the loader area.

*This will open a separate browser of the files on your computer. Search through the folders to find the photos you want to upload.

~~To choose a bunch of photo files consecutively: left click on the first photo…hold down the SHIFT key and left click on the last photo in the bunch. Now the first photo, the last photo, and all the ones in between should be highlighted. Left click the OPEN button to begin uploading those files.

~~To choose a bunch of photo files that are scattered in the same folder: left click the first photo file, then hold the CTRL key down while you single left click on all the other files you want to add. Once you’re done choosing/clicking files to add…let go of the CTRL key. Then left click the OPEN button to begin uploading those files.

*You will be taken back to the uploader page where the files will automatically begin loading.

*When it is done, it will tell you that loading is complete. At the bottom of the loader utility window... left click on the REMOVE LOADED AND INCOMPLETE button.

*This does NOT remove the pictures you just uploaded, it just clears out the uploader to prepare it for another session.

OPTION TWO:

**There is a grey box with space to upload 2 photos at a time. There are 2 browse buttons. Use these buttons to browse YOUR computer to find where you saved the photos you want to upload.

**Once you’ve found the photo file, double-click on it to automatically place the location path in the uploader. Repeat the process for the second file.

NOTE: If your photo files are fairly small in file size, then you may choose to uncheck the AUTOMATICALLY OPTIMIZE JPEG FILES box. By unchecking the box, it allows you to upload 6 photos at a time instead of just 2.

*When you’re done adding the file location paths, click the UPLOAD button.

*A confirmation screen will come up to tell you if they were all uploaded and what size they were reduced to (if the optimize box was checked when uploading). If there were any errors in uploading, it will show in red on this page.

*You may then return to your album pages and follow the above process again to upload more photos or you may begin posting your photos.

POSTING PHOTOS ON THIS SITE FROM VILLAGEPHOTOS:

*In your album page, it will show all the photos you have uploaded as thumbnails.

*Underneath each thumbnail photo are two links:

~~The first link is: Copy URL

*If you click on this link it will automatically copy the URL link that you need to post the photo. Then all you’ll need to do is right click in the text box of your post and choose PASTE then highlight the link and click the Imgbutton above the text box.

~~The second link is: Image URL and tools

*This link will take you to a page with tools for rotating, resizing, and captioning your photo. Scroll down that page to see these options.

*On this page you can also get the same link you were able to get just by clicking the Copy URL link. If you use the tools page to copy the URL link be sure to right click and copy the link under the following heading:

Public Image URL
For eBay's Picture URL, EZBoard, eBay galleries, or any other external use. Click to try it out!

*That is the only one that will work for posting photos on this message board.

~~If you want to share an entire photo album that you have created, then click the link above the thumbnails that says:

Share this page with others! The URL below is a link to a public version of this page. http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?selected=842399

*There will be a link in green with a small icon of 2 pages. Left click the icon ONCE to copy the link to the clipboard. Then in your post all you have to do is right click and choose paste. Then highlight the link and choose URL from the choices above the text box. In your post the URL will show up and when people click it they will be taken to your photo album to see all the photos. Through this link people CANNOT do anything within your account, all they can do is view the photos.

*If you create multiple albums, you can share them by using the above steps. The link to each album will be different.

Instructions on how to use www.photobucket.com

Extremely easy to use and it's FREE!

*Once you’ve signed in for the first time a page will appear to create an album.

*After you create an album then you can upload photos. You can upload photos of these types: jpg, gif, png, bmp.

*You can upload one photo or multiple photos (up to 19) at a time. To upload multiple photos, use the drop down menu to choose how many you wish to upload, it will then update and give you that many boxes to use to browse for photos.

*Use the browse button to search folders on YOUR computer for the photo you wish to upload. Once found, double left click on the photo file to transfer the file location path to one of the uploading boxes.

*Repeat the above step for all the photos you want to upload.

*When you are done locating files, left click the SUBMIT button.

*Depending on your connection speed it may take some time. Once the upload is complete it will say in red at the top of the page *Pictures Added.

*Click on your username at the top of the page to view the photos. You can select them and move them to the album you created.

*Then click on the album name to view thumbnails of the photos.

*Above the photo is an EDIT button. Clicking this takes you to a page that allows you to rename the file and/or resize the file. When you click the EDIT button, the page it goes to will give you the file size (kb) and the pixel size (a number x a number). If the pixel size is over 600, please resize it so it does not mess with the margins on the site.

POSTING PHOTOS USING PHOTOBUCKET

*Underneath the thumbnail photo are three URLs:

~~~URL – gives the URL address to the individual photo
~~~Tag – gives the URL in the format for posting on some ezboards
~~~IMG  - gives the URL in the correct format for posting on OUR site.  <----use this one!
*Left click once in the white box, it will highlight the URL.
*Right click and choose COPY
*Right click in the text box of the message you are posting and choose PASTE.
Note: Because it already has the IMG tags on it, you do NOT need to highlight and click the Img button after pasting the URL in the text box.
Hit submit and your photo should be posted.
Instructions on how to use www.imagestation.com
IMPORTANT: Imagestation does NOT allow external linking which is what is needed to post photos on this message board. In the member agreement it states: You may not take the results from your use of the Service and link to them, or mirror pages from the Site on another website, or create links from other websites onto any area of the Site. I spoke to a customer service rep to verify this.
You can, however, share photo albums through the Share Photo Album option on the Imagestation Site.
The reason a posted picture will show up the first time you posted and not when you went back to look at it is the next time the page refreshes (someone brings up the page to look at the photo), it pulls the link from imagestation, when it goes back to verify, the imagestation site sends back the unavailable message.
Once you’ve registered there are three methods for uploading images to imagestation:
*You will need to install the uploader program on your computer. The site will automatically ask you to do this.
Method One:  The Explore Tool
*Clicking on this option will show a page where on the left is a window that looks like Windows Explorer on your computer. On the right it will say IMAGES IN FOLDER.
*Browse through the explorer window to locate the photo(s) you want to add.
*Once you get to a folder that has photos in it, the right side of the page will display those photos as thumbnails.
*Click the box in the bottom left of the photo to add it to the batch being uploaded.
*Underneath the thumbnail are the options to rotate the photo or to write a caption for the photo.
* If there are multiple photos, it will have links to view the rest of the photos in the folder.
*Once you’ve checked all the photos you wish to upload, click the CONTINUE button located at the top and bottom of the page.
*A small pop-up will appear to show you the progress of the upload.
*Once complete, it will show thumbnails of all the photos you uploaded and you will have the option to UPLOAD IMAGES again or CREATE A NEW ALBUM or SHARE AN ALBUM.
Method Two: Drag and Drop
*For this one there is a round, blue target. You’ll need to shrink the browser (don’t minimize, click the button next to that in the upper right hand corner).
*Then you’ll need to open separately the folder where your photos are. *Choose which photos you wish to upload.
~~ To choose a bunch of photo files consecutively : left click on the first photo…hold down the SHIFT key and left click on the last photo in the bunch. Now the first photo, the last photo, and all the ones in between should be highlighted. Left click on one of the highlighted photos, and drag them to the other browser window and onto the round blue target. Let go of the mouse, the files will be uploaded to a pre-viewer.
~~ To choose a bunch of photo files that are scattered in the same folder : left click the first photo file, then hold the CTRL key down while you single left click on all the other files you want to add. Once you’re done choosing/clicking files to add…let go of the CTRL key. Left click on one of the highlighted photos, and drag them to the other browser window and onto the round blue target. Let go of the mouse, the files will be uploaded to a pre-viewer.
*You will be shown thumbnails of all the photos you chose, then you can decide if you really want to upload the photos or decide to leave some off by checking/unchecking the box. Once you’ve decided, click the continue button.
*A small pop-up will appear to show you the progress of the upload.
*Once complete, it will show thumbnails of all the photos you uploaded and you will have the option to UPLOAD IMAGES again or CREATE A NEW ALBUM or SHARE AN ALBUM.
Method 3: Select Image Files
*Use brows buttons to browse YOUR computer to find where you saved the photos you want to upload.
*Once you’ve found the photo file, double-click on it to automatically place the location path in the uploader. Repeat the process for each consecutive file you want to upload up to 36.
*A window will appear when the transfer of pictures is complete
Instructions for the photohosting sites have all been added. If I can find other photo hosting sites that are free and allow external linking then I will add posting instructions for that site too.
If you have any questions or need clarification on anything, please PM and I'll be happy to walk you through any of the steps.
Happy Posting!  :D
I just learned about another site that is free and allows external linking...which is what is needed in order to post photos on a message board.
It is called ImageShack and can be found here
Once I've had a chance to learn how it works, I'll post some instructions but feel free to go check it out for yourself!  :D
