Just got off the phone with loveOMC who was at the concert tonight and she loved it. Clay sounded great, his voice was perfect. David Foster introduced Clay as his brother-in-law. There was no other Clay performance but UM. She thought the whole show was wonderful.

What happens when Clay Aiken visits San Francisco? He goes to SF Optics to get some stunner shades so he can disguise himself! This American Idol legend stopped in today and we styled him into a Mykita Bruce in black with grey gradient lenses, and into a Robert Marc 736 color 251.

I just got home from david foster show. clay looked and sounded great. david called him his brother-in-law. red spiky hair, no glasses, half grown beard, green pullover sweater like shirt w/ little white or yellow stripes (looks like a shirt from 2004 time frame), baggy jeans, converse sneakers. someone backstage gave him the dress jacket to put on before he came on stage. he joked about there being a dress code on stage.
he said "crap" after david whispered in his ear what he wanted clay to sing. lots of applause when he finished singing.

FROM LOVEOMC AT CV:

Couldn't see the socks, but he was wearing some kind of long-sleeved Tee or something similar that had thin stripes on the sleeves. His hair was the same color he had in Raleigh 2 weeks ago, but it wasn't spiked up. He has the beginnings of a beard and looked very very hot, actually.

I had gotten a call on my cell phone just before the concert started, from a friend who was seated elsewhere in the arena. I learned from her that Clay was in SF and that that meant he might be at the concert. I was excited as all get out! Then, after the concert began, David did this little routine here and there at the beginning of the concert in which he called some random audience member up to sing a note that he cued. I knew right then that that ploy was how he was going to get Clay up there.

And I was right!

ETA: His hair was not red from what I could tell--that was the lighting. When Clay was first up at the edge of the stage, you could see his hair from the top, and it did not look red at all.

Clay Aiken first entered the public consciousness when he took part in the second season of American Idol (2003). Though he didn’t win he has since capitalized on that experience with four studio albums, many television appearances, two stints on Broadway starring as Sir Robin in Spamalot, charity work and a UNICEF ambassadorship. He has also written his memoirs, a New York times best-seller, Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music in Your Life (2004).

From moonriver919 at CV- who took the video posted above:

I’m glad to read that you guys appreciate the clack. I know the video quality and camera work is awful, but now I really know how talented the more seasoned clack gatherers are. You guys are the best!

David Foster had a schtick going on (which I'm sure you guys have heard about by now). After singing a note, David would ask a member of the audience in the front row to come up to the microphone and sing it back to him. The first two times, the audience members were normal audience members. But the third and final time, it was Clay!

David sang a note, and Clay sang it back but the note was too high. David said something to the effect of what he can do when he produces and then sang another note. Clay sang it back perfectly. David then introduced Clay as his brother-in-law, mentioned that his sister and Clay had a baby together, and invited Clay to come up on stage. I started to flip out, said OMG about 20 times in a row, and set my digital camera to video mode as fast as I could!

Clay looked great! His hair was brown, not red. I'm glad that someone gave him a jacket to wear on stage so he could comply with the "dress code." Clay was very enthusiastic during Ruben’s set. From where I sat (very far away from the stage), I could see Clay in the front row clapping his hands above his head after Ruben’s songs and waving his arms around after Ruben’s request. Near the end of Charice’s set, someone came by the front row, and Clay ducked and ran along the front row to go backstage.

THE EPITOME OF DECORUM

FROM LOVE OMC AT CV:

Now that I've gotten a good night's sleep, I thought I'd come back and provide a recap of the concert. The show was really amazing overall. My take on Clay's performance is that it was a spur-of-the-moment idea, and since he and David had worked UM out before, they didn't really need rehearsal time, which I am certain they did not have. As for the clothing and Clay's need to borrow a blazer, Clay may not have traveled with dress clothes. I have no idea really, but the vibe I got is that the entire thing was impromptu.

Clay looked and sounded terrific. I'd been longing to hear the lower register voice that Clay uses so well (the voice on "Broken Wings," for example); we got it, and I was thrilled. The crowd loved it. I sat next to my friend's husband (she was sitting elsewhere--long story). After Clay's performance, he said, "Well, that was worth the price of the whole ticket!" And this is a guy who often rolls his eyes at his wife's "enthusiasm"!

As for David calling Clay his brother-in-law, my take is that David considers Clay family, and that pleases me no end.

Clay sounded tremendously better than he did at the gala. There was only one place where I could hear some strain, and he covered it pretty well. I was sitting there really tense, hoping for the best but worried. Well, he pulled it off. I much prefer the lower register myself, and when I listen to his older stuff, I mourn its loss on the last album. In fact, when I listen to ATDW, I typically skip the higher register stuff, such as "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word." The beginning of that song, sung in falsetto, is just not my cuppa.

But last night, he sounded grand. That beautiful resonance was back, as was his control over it.

As for the gala, before I even heard him sing that night, I knew he would have trouble. He was staying in the same hotel I was, and the air was dehumidified to the point of intolerable. I lost my voice, so I knew he was going to have problems. That issue just didn't arise last night. The temperature in the Bay Area was mild, and for much of the day it was overcast. The humidity was just right for voice.

The dry air issue was a problem in Minneapolis for the two 2007 Christmas concerts, too. On the first night, Clay really strained, and I was upset that I had spent all that time and money going there to get a subpar performance. However, by the second night, his voice had acclimatized and he was simply superb. I was a happy camper once again.

A voice is part of the human body, and therefore subject to all its frailties. Age is no friend to it, I can tell ya that. Two of the older singers at the concert last night had some issues. Phillip Bailey, of Earth, Wind, and Fire fame, opened the show, and he really struggled with his falsetto. When he sang in a lower register he was fine. Peter Cetera, formerly of Chicago, also had some issues. He ended up sounding okay because he is a pro and knows how to cover, but watching him on the jumbotron was difficult; Clay's facial gestures are nothing compared to Peter's, which are quite grotesque.

Ruben sounded wonderful, btw. He, too, has two voices, one of which I like, the other, not so much. The higher voice is what I would call a "head voice," and it sounds thin and false to me, especially coming from a man his size (honestly, I could have set up camp inside his suit! lol). The lower voice, what I would call a "chest voice," is just sublime, and he sang quite a bit in this register, and his performance was wonderful. David said that Ruben could make a song out of anything and have it sound good, so he asked an audience member for a line. One guy came up with "I love Erica," and Ruben constructed an impromptu song out of it (with David accompanying him on piano), and it was fantastic. They might have had a melody worked out--I'm not sure they could have worked together so well from nothing, but suffice it to say that it was a wonderful display of Ruben's musicianship. I just hope Rube stays with that lower register more--it's what made him a standout on AI.

Charyce (sp??) was remarkable. She is very young (17) and really tiny. Physically, she reminds me of Allison Ireheta from this past season’s American Idol. Her voice has power and range so great that only Whitney, Mariah, and Celine--in their prime but not now--could match.

She leaves one wondering, "Where does that voice come from?"

Hmm. When have we heard that before?

Oh, I forgot to add that there was group of 4 men called "The Canadian Tenors" that just tore up (in a good way) Leonard Cohen's "Halleluiah." I got chills listening to it, so I'm going to go see if they have recorded that song.

THE EPITOME OF DECORUM

QUOTE ("kathleen06 from CB")
I've never shared like this before, but this is my personal review of the David Foster concert and Clay's surprise appearance in San Jose, CA last night. This is what I sent to my own fan group.
Clay was indeed in our area, and sat in the front row of the concert last night. It was an amazing three hours of solid entertainment, with so many guests singing with David. He is a very charming man, full of chatter that can be amusing or interesting, and they kept the concert moving along nicely. It was fairly expensive, but worth every penny.
My daughter and I sat in the 8th row, just nicely elevated a bit above stage level, in the side section by the stage, so we had a wonderful view. The added bonus was that while I watched the show Clay was completely in my vision as well, in the front row. He was animated, supportive (those long white arms would go up or out in front of him when any performer did something good) and while Ruben's longer set was happening, Clay was leaning forward on his elbows as though he was sending Ruben good vibes. He was cute to watch and always quick to stand for a performer too.
The 'cherry on the top' of an outstanding evening was that he was able to sing Unchained Melody. When David whispered to him, on stage, what he wanted to do, Clay in typical fashion turned to the audience and smiled while saying "oh crap!". But, he did a great job, probably completely unrehearsed from the look of things. He looked good, if very casual in an olive green shirt, jeans, and sneakers. He borrowed a sport coat to be on stage, said he didn't know there was a dress code. Yes, lots of stubble, very red, and his hair is light brown and spiked. I would say he had no make up on. It really was such a surprise!
Marilyn was there, but strange as it seems I was sitting with my daughter in one spot, and Marilyn and my husband were sitting together on the floor about half way back. I think we had the bonus of easily watching Clay from the side seats. Never saw him come in, as I had no clue, but did see him escorted out during the last song. There were some others with him, a shorter man with baseball cap, and I wondered if it could possibly be Brett, but I really don't know. No rumors, please. Seemed like two older women might have been with them too when they left. One of the performers, a 17 year old guy with a fabulous voice sat beside him the rest of the show, but did go back up on stage at the end.
That's about as detailed as I can get. My daughter took some pictures, but she is no expert, so we will see what she got. I'll share if they show anything worthwhile.
As an aside, Ruben was in great voice, and personable. He sang some slower songs, but his voice was beautiful, and I am glad to have seen him live and doing music I enjoy. For me, this is the stuff he should sing, not what he had chosen to do in the past. He looked very heavy, and of course had a sweat rag all the time, but sang very well.
Wish more of us had been there, especially someone with a good camera or video! So very glad I went as the whole evening was really wonderful.
