Myths meet modern music

As the last notes of a song die away, the first judge gives the hopeful singer a shot of encouragement. “It works for me.”

The second judge gushes enthusiasm. “Love it, love it, love it.”

The third judge is harsh. He says the singer really knows how to stink up the joint.

Hmm. It may sound like Randy, Paula and Simon from “American Idol,” but these judges are Apollo, Aphrodite and the mighty Zeus.

In the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble’s annual Summer Family Show “Ancient Greek Idol,” the god of music, the goddess of love and the king of all the gods watch as skillful weaver Arachne, underworld-visitor Persephone, everything-he-touches-turns-to-gold King Midas and monster-slayer Theseus sing, dance and tell their stories.

“The kids are really motivated,” said Richard Cannaday, who directs two young alternating casts in a show that combines ancient Greek myths with modern references and rock music.

Persephone, for example, nibbles M&M candies rather than the pomegranate seeds of the original tale. Arachne, who turns into a spider, sings “Walk Like an Arachnid” to the tune “Walk Like an Egyptian.” And King Midas, who finds it’s difficult to eat when food instantly becomes metallic, will segue from “Super Freak” to “Can’t Touch This.”

“I couldn’t resist that joke,” said Cannaday, who resurrected “Ancient Thunder,” a BTE Greek mythology show from a few years ago, and reworked it for an “American Idol” feel.

Although he watched the Clay Aiken season of the popular competition when he “was a young singer who wanted to be part of something like that,” Cannaday said, he now lives in a home without a TV. “Just from memory I wrote the responses the judges would have.”
