As of November, Clay Aiken was missing from RCA’s roster of talent.  Speculation began as to whether or not Aiken had gotten the boot from his record label.  However, recently, his publicist Cindi Berger told People magazine, “We were unable to come to terms in a recent contract negotiation, and decided that it was best to move on.”  This sounds more like the split was a mutual decision on the parts of Aiken and RCA.

Clay’s first album, Measure of a Man, sold 2.78 million copies in 2003, months after he came in second place on the second season of American Idol.  However, his most recent album, On My Way Here, sold just 159,000 copies.  Does this display Clay’s inability to sell records or RCA’s inability to market him correctly?  Clay still has multitudes of unbelievable loyal fans, and many of them could be found at the Spamalot stage door while Clay was part of the Broadway production.  However, when was the last time a Clay Aiken song was on the radio?  The last single I remember actually hearing was “Invisible,” in 2003-2004.  Why is it that none of his other singles were ever audible on air waves?  Why is it that the releases of his later albums were kept quiet, forcing fans to stay plugged into his website to find out when they would become available?

Perhaps RCA isn’t to blame, and perhaps it’s the fact that it’s been so long since Aiken was on Idol that’s the reason for diminished sales and parting ways with record labels.  Perhaps his fan base isn’t as big as it seems, though one can not deny the die hard loyalty of the “Claymates.”  Regardless of the truth, Aiken will surely find a new label to be home to his angelic voice soon.  For the moment, he’s concentrating on taking care of his son Parker, who was born on August 8.  After a stressful year of Broadway performances, a new album, coming out, and fathering a child, Aiken more than deserves a bit of downtime. 
 
Watch for Clay Aiken on this season of  “America’s Next Top Model.”  The episode featuring Aiken will air on April 8, and he will participate in an acting challenge with contestants and serve as a guest judge
