David Archuleta starts at No. 2 on the Billboard album chart, selling 183,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Kirsten has already done some excellent, handily organized research for MJ's Big Blog, which tells us that David A. stands in third place among Idol runners-up for best debut sales week. Bo sold 227,000 and Clay, of course, holds the all-time Idol first-week record with 613,000. Clay was the only runner-up to enter the chart at No. 1; David A. joins Katharine in starting at No. 2. And David's initial total is the 10th-highest all-time, behind (in order) Clay, Ruben, Carrie, Chris D., Taylor, Kelly, Fantasia, Bo and Jennifer.

Clay's Merry Christmas With Love zoomed from 100 to 300, for a total of 1.36 million. On My Way Here was also up, 200 to 300, for a total of 154,000.

Thanks to organizations like UNICEF this number is getting smaller every day. Last year, the number of child deaths worldwide declined to about 9.2 million. In 1990, that number was 12.7 million. That's definite progress, but that number should be zero.

Your support will help UNICEF reach the day when no child dies of a preventable cause. No child, not even one, should die of causes we know how to prevent—diseases like malaria, measles or tetanus.

So today, despite these tough times, I decided to help save children's lives and make a monthly pledge to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. Even a small amount makes a huge difference. For instance, $5 a month (about 15¢ per day) can ensure five children are protected from measles.

Photo Flash: Monty Python's 'Spamalot' With Aiken, Siberry and Dandridge

MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT, the Tony Award winning musical lovingly ripped-off from the internationally famous comedy team’s most popular motion picture, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, is currently playing at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre (225 West 44th St.).

SPAMALOT won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, and the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Musical.

Michael Siberry and Merle Dandridge play ‘King Arthur’ and ‘Lady of the Lake’ respectively. They are joined by “American Idol” finalist Clay Aiken, Tom Deckman, Rick Holmes, Bradley Dean, Wally Dunn and David Hibbard.

Aiken performs at charity gala

Raleigh, N.C. — Clay Aiken performed in Raleigh Saturday night during a gala held by the Bubel-Aiken Foundation.

The 2008 “Champions of Change” event honored companies and individuals who help promote the foundation’s mission to promote programs which give children with disabilities the opportunity to experience life with their typical peers.

The event was held at the Raleigh Marriott City Center. It included a silent and online auction of Aiken-related items including photos; clothing worn by the “American Idol” runner-up and a bust of the Raleigh native’s head signed by him and Jimmy Kimmel.

Also up for auction was a New York travel package which includes a Tiffany bracelet, tickets to “Spamalot,” which Aiken has been starring in, and dinner with Aiken.

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation grew from the friendship between Aiken, Diane Bubel and Diane’s, then 13-year-old son, Mike, who had been diagnosed with autism, according to the foundation’s Web site. Aiken met the Bubel family while pursuing a career in special education

Aiken is a UNICEF Ambassador. He has travelled to Banda Aceh, Indonesia and Kabul and Bamyan in Afghanistan, raising awareness and funds in support of education. In northern Uganda he witnessed the plight of children called “night commuters”, who flee the villages each night to sleep in streets and shelters in hopes of avoiding being kidnapped by the Lord’s Resistance Army.

Clay helped create the Bubel/Aiken Foundation after working with 13-year-old Mike Bubel while pursuing a career in special education.

He has performed in support of a number of causes at events such as the 2004 Rosalynn Carter Benefit, the America’s Promise Benefit, and Heather Headley’s Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS benefit, “Home,” where he sang a duet with Headley.
