THE "PREZ"

« Reply #1780 on: November 30, 2008, 02:20:22 PM »

Just wanted to say the Clay's M& G yesterday is open to discussion here.  Not only do we post hot pics and have lecherours fun, we can share an opinion on anything Clay.  No tomatoes will be thrown, just respect.

Here's my opinion.

I think Clay needs a new EP (Executive Producer.) Jaymes is not useful anymore. Maybe another cover album may work, then again maybe not. I just wish that RCA wouldn't box Clay in the Barry Manilow, Josh Groban, Michael Buble catergory. But they do.

You know we fell in love with Clay doing covers, and look what happened to On My Way Here.  Now I realize that it was not promoted very well, what is everyone's opinion of what could have happened with promo???
Covers just seems so safe, but he does one hell of a job on them Clapping I just want to hear the man sing.

On My Way Here was rushed into completion, not sure why.  Maybe RCA found out Jaymes was PG and insisted it be finished before the pregnancy became common knowledge.  shrug

Then they had to rush the promotion, had to take what they could get.  Didn't sing on most of them and when he did he was not in his best voice.  The song (On My Way Here) did not play well on TV.  It needed more instrumentation to do it justice.  Should have chosen a better song--something that wasn't so sentimental and played better with a band.

More later, gotta go eat.

I'm OK with covers, nobody does them better.  But please not exclusively covers.

There's a cover of the Joni Mitchell song out there now done by Counting Crows--"Big Yellow Taxi".  That's a brilliant choice cuz its so old that many fans don't know of or remember it.  And it has substantive lyrics that are relevant to today.  Lots of those 60s songs are relevant again due to our recurring concerns about the environment and war and human rights.  Right up Clay's alley.

Clay's always been really good at choosing songs with great lyrics.  Maybe we could think of some songs or groups that we think he should look at.  I've always thought that he might do The Eagles songs pretty well.  I'd have to think about it some more.  If he chose some more obscure songs that we haven't heard in a really long time, they might feel nostalgic yet fresh, if he did them in an updated way.  I trust him to make good choices in songs.

And of course there's songs from musicals.  Not the OTT stereotypical ones, but the beautiful ballads and maybe the lesser heard stuff.  The Andrew Lloyd Weber songs and Tim Rice/Elton John, and the Gershwins, and Rodgers & Hammerstein, and Stephen Sondheim, and Irving Berlin songs would be gorgeous.

I'd like to hear him do classic songs too.  Remember when he wanted to sing Moon River and we all objected?  Well I'm no fan of Moon River, but maybe that's an example of how we need to let him just make his own choices and see how it turns out.  I have to say that musically his surprises have always been pleasant.

Frannie, Have you ever heard Donny Osmonds' CD This Is The Moment ? It's all covers of Broadway songs but done in Donny's style.  It's one of my favorite CD's.
