It was a thrill to open my Target Stores flyer this morning and see On My Way Here as the first CD on the "Tune in Tuesday" page. 

I am going to open this thread now so we all get together and talk about the sales buzz in upcoming week.

We will officially get some numbers after the first week of sales.

I can't wait to see how this CD does.

The Digital CD is ranked #12 in the sales of Vocal Pop MP3 albums for the hour. Also, in the overall Amazon MP3 chart, it's #215 which ranks everything available as an MP3 album.

The Physical CD is ranked #4 in the Vocal Pop category and #10 on the overall best-selling albums for the hour.

Hall of Famer’s Final WB Album Debuts at #1, Lyfe Jennings, The Roots, Def Leppard, Portishead and Mudcrutch Also Bow in Top 10

For Madonna, it’s once more with feeling.
The Material Gal’s final studio recording for Warner Bros., Hard Candy, debuts at #1 on this week’s HITS Album Sales chart, with 282k for the critically-acclaimed disc.

That was enough to turn back last week’s diva, as Mariah Carey’s Island/IDJ album E=MC2 dips to #2 after a pair of weeks on top, with 87k.

J Records/Syco Music’s U.K. phenom Leona Lewis is #3, with 82k, remaining strong with just a 17% dropoff.

Columbia R&B star Lyfe Jennings’ Lyfe Change leads a group of four Top 10 newcomers at #4, followed by The Roots’ Def Jam/IDJ album Rising Down (#5), Island/IDJ area rockers Def Leppard’s Songs From the Sparkle Lounge (#6) and Island/IDJ’s Portishead (#7).

Next week, look for Columbia’s Neil Diamond to lead a group of new releases that includes RCA’s Clay Aiken, 143/Reprise’s Josh Groban with a live CD/DVD and Toby Keith’s 35 Biggest Hits on Show Dog/Mercury.

For the record, they usually only mention the CDs that they believe will be the top sellers in their next week's listings.

AC - wonderful figures for the CD!!!! 

I brought my post over from Critical Mass for you - so many people are upset at the thought that the CD may not sell has many copies the first week as we had hoped, so I looked a few figures up: NOTE:) the dates are the dates of the magazines, not the dates of the charts).

I donate magazines after I read them (If I did not we would be buried in magazines here). I have a stack ready to go and I pulled out some back issures of Entertainment Weekly to check first week sales of CDs from the BillBoard Top 20 charts - EW does not gives figures from all Cds, but here are some figures you may (or may not   ) find interesting:

Neil Diamond On Track For First No. 1 Album Ever

Forty-one years after he first appeared on The Billboard 200, Neil Diamond looks to be on course to earn his first No. 1 album ever on next week's chart as first-day sales of "Home Before Dark" (Columbia) lead the Nielsen SoundScan Building chart released May 7.

Unweighted sales for "Home" from the chart's panel of nine reporters through the close of business Tuesday, May 6, came in at 30,000. A source close to the album projects a first-week start in the neighborhood of 125,000. This week's current No. 1, Madonna's "Hard Candy" (Warner Bros.), may slide to No. 2 or No. 3 next week on The Billboard 200, while new entries from Gavin DeGraw, Clay Aiken, Toby Keith and Josh Groban look headed for top 10 bows.

Projecting sales this week is a bit tricky as shopping for the Mother's Day
holiday on Sunday, May 11, may amplify the demand for certain sets -- like the mom-friendly efforts from Diamond, Aiken, Keith and Groban.

Billboard estimates the merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Circuit City, iTunes, Starbucks, Borders, Target, Anderson Merchandisers and Handleman Co. -- comprise about 80% of all U.S. album sales.

Over the course of Diamond's career, he's racked up 45 albums on The
 
Billboard 200, starting with 1966's "The Feel of Neil Diamond." The recent "American Idol" guest has earned 13 top 10 albums, including his last effort, "12 Songs," which debuted and peaked at No. 4 in late 2005.

DIAMOND IS A CHART’S BEST FRIEND   
Legend’s Rick Rubin-Produced Columbia Album Will Debut at #1

It’s been 42 years since Neil Diamond released his debut album in 1966, The Feel of Neil Diamond.

The veteran singer-songwriter proves he’s still got the waist movement, Cherry, with his latest Columbia Records release, Home Before Dark, produced by label creative chief Rick Rubin, set to debut at #1 next week for Steve Barnett and company with a one-week total of 125-130k.

That number, which could go higher with Mother’s Day weekend sales, should be more than enough to beat out Madonna’s WB release, Hard Candy, which appears on tap for between 85-95k after one week on top.

It’ll be the first chart-topping bow for Diamond in his four-decade-long career, based on one-day reports from all those music retailers recovered enough from Cinco de Mayo festivities to return our e-mails.

Diamond's last album for the label, 2005’s 12 Songs, the first one produced by Rubin, saw its sales stunted by Andy Lack’s rootkit fiasco, though it recovered enough to eventually go gold.

RCA American Idol alum Clay Aiken is On My Way Here, with loyal Claymates pushing his first-week sales total to 80-85k, just ahead of fellow J Records heartthrob Gavin DeGraw’s self-titled sophomore album with 75-80k.


Other chart newcomers include Show Dog Mercury country star Toby Keith’s 35 Biggest Hits, on target for 60-70k, followed by 143/Reprise pop crooner Josh Groban’s live CD/DVD package at 50-55k and a greatest hits compilation from Capitol Nashville’s latest Real Men of Genius subject Dierks Bentley at 30-35k.


The market was up 10% over last week, down 10% vs. the same week last year and down 11% year to date, which seems to be following the trajectory of George W.’s approval rating.

I read all the posts and saw the remark about Clay's CD perhaps selling less than 100,000 Is that a combined total of everything: physical CDs, on-line sales, mail orders. I think sales of CD's are going to continue to go down for nearly everyone unless an act grabs the national attention for a couple of weeks like the Amy Winehouse person or this Leona Lewis act. I also have to put some emphasis on how low-key Clay remains...aside from the usual debut week/month of a CD's release, he isn't putting his CD out there for all to see. However, in a different approach, speculation tends to say that Clay is comfortable with his own audience and releases songs or appears on TV shows just for his audience to enjoy whereas other singer's continue the wall to wall hype year after year after year...hype reaching people who perhaps are not fans of the artist and that breeds resentment. I'm sure those who groan at the music of Neil Diamond are pulling their hair out wondering how on earth he could achieve such a big sales success this far into his career...the naysayers probably wonder how he ever landed a recording contract. There are people out there like that and as we know, Clay critics are a plenty...so as i read negative remarks about Clay's new CD or read this or that from those who really aren't fans of Clay's musical selections, i roll my eyes a lot, because they don't "get it". The big music critics will never get it...they never got John Denver's appeal...they don't get Barry Manilow's...they don't get Neil Diamond's...they don't get Clay Aiken's...etc etc
