First of all, people have threatened to bail on the show since the words “Ruben Studdard” were first printed on the winning envelope at the end of Season 2 – maybe even before that. Clay fans began to proclaim, “Idol found, game over,” and said they’d never watch again or at least never vote for anyone because for them Clay was it. Then there was the whole Jennifer Hudson episode with Elton John branding the show as racist and fans swearing they would never again invest themselves in the show. That’s just a couple of many examples of the protests and boycotts that have been promised – those of us who write about the show hear it all the time. The net result? Ratings are once again up 5% for the show and the premiere came within less than a ratings point of beating the Aiken/Studdard finale of Season 2. So much for boycotts and assorted other howls of righteous indignation.

We all sit patiently and wait for the next Kelly Clarkson to dazzle us, or for the Voice of the Ages to show up in the nerdy guise of a Clay Aiken. But in order for the judges to find the diamond of tomorrow they have to wade through the coal slag of today. Fans of the show have known this and eagerly sit through the horrible “singers” just to hear what Simon is going to have to say afterward.

Entertainment for the 41st Super Bowl is still listed as "TBD". The NFL hasn't called me yet for my recommendations, which I find puzzling. They did take half of my suggestion last year, bringing in the Rolling Stones (but not a working sound system). Unfortunately, the league wouldn't spring for the Flying Burrito Brothers and Jefferson Airplane for the pre-game show. The whole idea of a "Tribute to Altamont" went right over their heads. I guess finding room near the stage for both the bikers doing security and the dancing kids from the United Way would have been tricky

Clay Aiken and U2. The true measure of musicians is how they interpret the material of others. I see U2 and Bono swapping off songs, with the band as backing musicians. Aiken could rip into "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and Bono could stretch out a little on "Build Me Up Buttercup" (which Aiken performed on 'American Idol'). Maybe they could even trade looks. I'm thinking the sunglasses might bring out the sinister side of Aiken, and a good moose and some highlights could help Bono find his inner Aiken.

Those 15 minutes
January 22nd, 2007 — crackpottery
nothing like chasing them!!

There has been an “uproar” over American Idol this past week, with people claiming that the judges “went too far” with their criticism of some of the auditioners.

Watching the Today show this morning, one of the two who has really been complaining that Simon hurt him so bad gave himself away. (It’s all publicity, bay-bee! He’s got an agent now, whoo-hoo!) He claimed he’d been watching the show since season 1, and has NEVER seen Simon make fun of someone for their looks.

Um… excuse me? Wanna run that by me again?

Hey, bush baby, I don’t believe you. Think back a little. Simon OFTEN makes fun of people for their looks. Heck, even a couple of successful Idolites have suffered those comments from him. Clay Aiken anyone? What about Jennifer Hudson?

Anyone who has watched the show, from the first season or no, knows exactly what they are in for should they decide to go audition. I know that the judges sometimes get really out there - but as the more reasonable of the two on the Today show said this morning, they’re making a television show. That kind of thing, it makes good tv. It’s not my favorite part of the program - I much prefer when it gets down to the finals - but, it is, and always has been, part of the show. And a SHOW it is.

For those of you that have not seen this:
This is a satellite radio station and it has been playing "A Thousand Days" regularly. someone from CV switched it on and "A Thousand Days" was just finishing playing.

(They said that BigRadio is playing a lot of cuts from ATDW.)
