Fox’s American Idol is now a reliable and non-stigmatized way to pick a super-star.  Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks and this year’s sensation, Jennifer Hudson – plucked from obscurity and thrust headlong into the awards race.  She may win an Oscar this year.

While AI is great at launching winners, they don’t have as much luck selling that winner’s first song.  While they hit number one, they don’t become long-lasting hits. Now, the show has announced that it will conduct a parallel songwriting contest to match the singing competition so that, by the end, the wisdom of crowds will have picked a winner and a song for them to sing.

The parade of awful amateurs on "American Idol" attracted viewers in staggering numbers this week as the series continues to grow in popularity


The ratings performance of "American Idol" defies traditional television rules, where series in their sixth season would normally see a slip in popularity.

But "American Idol" can legitimately claim to mint new pop stars, like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken and "Golden Globes" winner Jennifer Hudson.

Day two, American Idol’s premiere—are you hooked yet? In its first five seasons, American Idol has caused mass hysteria, and its finale is consistently nothing short of television’s entertainment biz’ Super Bowl. There are celebrity guests, lights, confetti, controversy, ill-timed commercial breaks and, oh yeah, singing.

To be famous—or not… It could be argued that to be crowned the winner is somewhat irrelevant, an extra perk on top of the more major mission: becoming an Idol cult favorite--i.e., a household name, long before the final votes are cast. Runner-up, positive pop prince, Clay Aiken has undoubtedly surpassed the velvet-voiced teddy bear who beat him, Ruben Studdard, in terms of headlines, recent album sales and strength of fan base.

"Idol" Premiere Stuns With 37.3 Million Viewers

A staggering 37.3 million people tuned in to watch the sixth season premiere of the hit talent show American Idol on Tuesday night.

The figures, two million more than last year's season debut, gave the show its second highest-rated telecast ever.

Only Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard's final showdown in May, 2003, brought American Idol more viewers - 38.1 million fans tuned in for that.

According to the "News&Oberver," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" did a home makeover in Raleigh and Clay's mom helped with choosing the window treatments.

Some walls in the large master bedroom are papered with a black paisley design. The draperies are white satin with a 21-inch black border around the bottom, said Faye Parker, who helped with the home's window dressings. (Yes, Clay Aiken fans, Parker is the "American Idol" runner-up's mom, and no, Parker says, he will not be featured on the show. "He was excited I was doing it," she said. "He said, 'Go for it, Mom. ") White silk drapes with inverted pleats cover the windows in the living and dining rooms, she said.

And, in William Jr.'s room, Parker worked on the duvet cover, designed to look like a football field. It covers a bed made of Lego. Most of her work followed the recommendations of the show's designers. But they did like one of her suggestions: football pillows for the room, she said.
