HOW'S YOUR GRANDMOM MEESA?

Pretty good! It's an off week for chemo. No chemo until the Friday after Christmas. I have the day off to go with her.

She's been volunteering for Wrapping for Inclusion this year (last year she did too).

What do they call Santa's helpers?

*hint--it is NOT the group who's given us all the new names* Wink

GWENN, if you read back a few pages you would see an invitation for all our Jewish friends to join in as well, and share some of your Hanukkah traditions!  For example, I would love to know more about how to make those potato latkes....mmmm.

Smile

In fact, I'm going to change the thread title so you will come on in!!

SEE, PAMELA, IT IS MY FAULT.  I SHOULD HAVE READ.

WHEN ERICA WAS LITTLE, HANUKKAH WAS A REALLY FUN TIME. WE WOULD GET HER 8 GIFTS--ONE FOR EACH NIGHT.  PLUS ONE FROM THE DOGS.  SHE WOULD ALSO GET FROM SOME FRIENDS AND GRANDPARENTS.  OF COURSE, MY BROTHER.  THEY WOULD BE WRAPPED AND PILED UP ON THE DINING ROOM TABLE.  SHE WOULD GET SO EXCITED.  THERE WASN'T MUCH TO GET FOR DECORATING.  BUT WE DID HAVE SOME BEAUTIFUL MENORAHS.  ONE WAS USED FOR THE CANDLES BUT OTHERS JUST BECAUSE.  IT IS BASICALLY A HOLIDAY FOR CHILDREN.

IT IS A JOYOUS HOLIDAY FOR US.  BUT NOT A VERY IMPORTANT ONE.  IT BECAME MORE IMPORTANT SO THAT JEWISH KIDS WOULDN'T FEEL LEFT OUT AT THE CHRISTMAS SEASON.  YOU LIGHT CANDLES FOR 8 NIGHTS AND EAT LOTS OF FRIED FOOD TO SYMBOLIZE THE OIL THAT LKASTED 8 DAYS INSTEAD OF 1.

LATKES ARE MADE WITH GRATED POTATOES, ONION, EGGS, AND FLOUR.  PROBABLY CAME FROM RUSSIA OR POLAND WHERE MOST JEWISH FOOD CAME FROM.  MIXED TOGETHER WITH SALT AND A LITTLE PEPPER AND SPOONED INTO HOT OIL AND FRIED.  PEOPLE ALSO SERVE DONUTS FOR DESSERT SINCE THEY ARE ALSO FRIED.

YOU KNOW, SINCE SOUTHERNERS FRY EVERYTHING, HANUKKAH WOULD BE EASY FOR YOU GUYS.  bigsmile Wink blush

Presents for a week... candles... donuts! Ooh, I'm likin' this Hanukkah stuff. bigsmile

Of course, as squirrelly as I am, I've been shoring up Christmas presents like nuts for the winter. Haven't wrapped a dang thing though. Maybe I'll take 'em all to my local WFI ladies. Wink

I found some old photos from Christmas past:

Remember those old cardboard fireplaces for those that didn't have the real thing?

And this frog toybox was my favorite thing ever. It never had the toys in it though because I was always playing inside it:

Remember the Sit & Spin? One of my faves!

Remember the Lite Brite? Another fave - except when I dropped the little pegs and they were lost forever in the carpet.

Remember that story I shared a while ago about a bike falling apart? Did they make bikes back then without streamers on the handle? Laughing

Here they all are in one picture!

And if anyone can remember what that little treehouse was called please tell me! I loved that thing.  Smile
