Clay Aiken (music)
"A Thousand Different Ways"
(RCA)

The "American Idol" runner-up is back with a new concept album, a cover collection of tunes from the '70s, '80s and '90s. Aiken delivers his versions of such well-known former chart-toppers as "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word," "Here You Come Again," "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" and "I Want to Know What Love Is." The set also includes four new songs.

"A Thousand Different Ways" follows Aiken's multi-platinum debut, 2003's "Measure of a Man," and the holiday album "Merry Christmas With Love," which reportedly was the best-selling holiday disc of the 2004 season.

Aiken recently made news after the White House announced that the pop singer was in line to be named to the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities.

A beautiful and melodic album by a wonderful pop artist., September 19, 2006
Reviewer: Pam "Pam" (High Point, NC) - See all my reviews
I have to say, I'm a sucker for Clay's voice. This album is ALL about the voice. While not quite as marketable as Measure Of A Man, this album lives up to it's potential.

Right Here Waiting - 3.8/5. I am not quite sure why he covered this song. While it's a decent song, there isn't really much spark to it.

Lonely No More - 5/5. One of the few original songs. A passionate song about being in need of somebody to share yourself with.

Without You - 4/5. Wonderfully done. He really pulls it through with his glory notes after the bridge. Clay brought new life into this classic.

Every Time You Go Away - 3.5/5. While it is well done, it is not particularly unique. Kind of filler.

Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word - 5/5. I wasn't sure if he was going to be able to pull of Elton John. This song has to be one of my favorites. Beautifully done.

When I See You Smile - 3.8/5. Once again, wonderfully done. I don't feel that it's particularly original though.

A Thousand Days - 4/5. This is my least favorite of the covers. It is a wonderful pop song though.

Everything I Do (I Do It For You) - 4/5. This song was kind of new to me, as I hadn't heard the original. It is a striking and beautiful song. Clay definately pulls off the vocals.

Because You Loved Me - 4.5/5. I've heard criticism of this song being bleak or emotionless. I disagree however. I think the simplicity of it holds meaning in itself. Nicely done.

I Want To Know What Love Is - 4.5/5. Fantastic duet. I think it's my favorite rendition of this classic.

These Open Arms - 5/5. This song is more of Clay's style. It reminds me of "Run To Me" from Measure of A Man. It has a beautiful opening and then succeeds in giving you goosebumps by the time the chorus starts.

Here You Come Again - 5/5. Again, an interesting choice in a cover. I absolutely love his rendition, simply beautiful.

Everything I Have - 5/5. Here's another keeper. I love both the lyrics and the tempo of the song. It's quite refreshing. Clay's voice records very nicely on this one.

Broken Wings - 4.8/5. This song has a little bit of a mysterious feel to it, but it seems like a bookend theme to "A Thousand Different Ways." This is emphasized when the girl whispers those words at the very end of the song. I have no complaints.

Overall: 4.8/5.

Next week’s Top 10 chart finishers should include A&M/Interscope’s Fergie, J’s Clay Aiken, Sony BMG Nashville’s Kenny Chesney and Verve’s Diana Krall, with Hollywood’s Jesse McCartney, Capitol’s Chingy, Geffen’s New Found Glory and Atlantic’s Lupe Fiasco all having an outside shot.

Right Here Waiting - written by Richard Marx.  Here are the lyrics. Clay said this CD was about all the different kinds of love.

I think this one is most definitely *romantic.*

Oceans apart day after day
And I slowly go insane
I hear your voice on the line
But it doesn't stop the pain

If I see you next to never
How can we say forever

Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you

I took for granted, all the times
That I though would last somehow
I hear the laughter, I taste the tears
But I can't get near you now

Oh, can't you see it baby
You've got me goin' CrAzY

Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you

I wonder how we can survive
This romance
But in the end if I'm with you
I'll take the chance

Oh, can't you see it baby
You've got me goin' cRaZy

Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you
