I just found an awesome website (after seeing a TV ad for it) and it's called
DonorsChoose.Org.
Directly from their website:
DonorsChooseSM is a simple way to provide students in need with resources that our public schools often lack. At this not-for-profit web site, teachers submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need to learn. These ideas become classroom reality when concerned individuals, whom we call Citizen Philanthropists, choose projects to fund.
Right now you can choose projects to help fund in the following regions:
Alabama
Chicago
Los Angeles
Louisiana
Mississippi
New York City
North Carolina
San Francisco Bay Area
South Carolina
Texas
You can search by region or keyword. You can also browse by region, subject, type of resource, cost of completion and student profiles. The site also allows you to give gift certificates to others that allows them to choose what project they'd like to fund.
You can go
HERE to read more about the process and what the site does.
