Clay's Maine Squeeze

It would seem logical to presume that Manilow seems made for these television times (How far off could Clay Aiken be from Manilow's musical core?), but the singer says the new-model shows are a mystery to him.

Quote
Barry Manilow is everywhere these daysBY GEOFF BOUCHERLos Angeles TimesThings have changed for Barry Manilow with the success of his new album, "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties," and his Las Vegas show, "Music and Passion," which debuted in February 2005. The engagement at the Hilton came after "One Night Live! One Last Time!" that was billed as Manilow's last road tour. "Music and Passion" also spawned a special with the same title that aired March 9 on PBS.
"What this new album allowed me to do is get made fun of on all of the television talk shows I couldn't get on last year," Manilow said. "And that feels great. It means I'm back on their radar."
Clive Davis, the record executive behind the album, had told Manilow that the way to hammer away on the album's sales would be to run through every television appearance possible. And Manilow did just that, even if it meant singing "Copacabana" on "Dancing With the Stars" and immersing himself in the foreign trappings of "American Idol."
It would seem logical to presume that Manilow seems made for these television times (How far off could Clay Aiken be from Manilow's musical core?), but the singer says the new-model shows are a mystery to him.

From the Ranger's Baseball team article:

Quote
Testing the Rangers on a subject in which they claim to have some degree of expertise.

Today's contestant: 2B Ian Kinsler admitted that he's watched American Idol since the first season.

Who was the first season winner and runner-up?

"Kelly Clarkson and the guy with the weird hair." (Correct, except the guy with the weird hair was Justin Guarini)

Can you name the movie Kelly and Justin were in?

"Absolutely not. Don't make these questions too hard." ( From Justin to Kelly)

Which celebrity has their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?

"Paula Abdul. No, wait ... Ryan Seacrest." (Seacrest is correct)

What's the phrase Ryan Seacrest uses to sign off the show?

"Make sure you vote?" (Incorrect. He uses "Seacrest out.")

Who's the most famous person for never making the show because he can't sing?

"William Chung ... I mean William Hung." (Correct)

Who was the winner and runner-up in season two?

"Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. But Clay Aiken is a bigger deal now." (Correct)

Can you name a song from any album sung by a winner?

"'Jesus, Take the Wheel' by Carrie Underwood." (Correct)

Would you consider trying out for the show?

"Absolutely not. I'm a terrible singer and that would be a horrible decision."

This is a non-Clay article, but it is an interesting read.  Wink
Does anyone remember the busy signals when trying to vote for Clay on AI2?

Elliott Yamin: The closest thing to Elliott that has come along was a guy named Clay. I think he did ok. If Elliott looked like Ace, he would with out a doubt win the whole thing because this is not just a singing contest. That being said, there has never been a better male voice on the show than Elliott. He is one of the aforementioned four I was talking about. I think this week he will dominate the vocals singing songs from the 50s. He has a through back voice that can work today. I will buy this CD first day out.

Maybe I am an idealist, but I still think the voters determine the winner. Simon basically said as much during his interview with Larry King. He also stated that, so far, voters have gotten it right. I would debate that in terms of Ruben vs. Clay. I think Clay should have won that season, and I think Simon knows it.

 wave Deanna!!!

Thanks for the news.  Interesting stories!!!  I think Elliott is very good, but I wouldn't go as far as saying he is the best male singer ever on the show.  We all know who is!!!  Wink

Of course I agree, Clay has had the best male voice so far. Of course Simon couldn't acknowledge or consider that at all.. How could a voice be the  best voice and LOSE the title..??

We know how.. They screwed up!!

BUT..

Simon falls into that "rare" category of people, (many of us who know the type) who is NEVER WRONG!!!

       IMHO

The whole idea of someone being "best" doesn't really seem to mean much, except possibly technically -- because singers don;t sing in a vacuum, they resonate with listeners.  My idea of a terrific singer is someone I hear once, and who I then hear again at will (or against it) in my head over and over -- the best singers are, to me, the ones whom I find so powerful or moving or unique or whatever, their singing becomes unforgettable for me.  I think the best yardstick for a "best" singer might be to measure who seems to resonate with, and move, the most listeners.  I'm afraid none of this year's males have demonstrated this unforgfettable singing quality for me yet -- Clay did it in spades, and sometimes Ruben and Bo, and often Constantine -- my faves so far (but I'm always free to change my mind...)
