After dark: Season of high and low notes
Jeff Spevak
Staff music critic

(December 29, 2005) — Over the course of reviewing 40 concerts during 2005, I learned just one thing. Clay Aiken's fans have no sense of humor, and a lot of idle time to send nasty e-mails. Here's my Year in Reviews:
(snip)

July 30, Clay Aiken at Darien Lake. "It was like the paint burning away from the sled to reveal the secret of 'Rosebud' in the final scene of Citizen Kane. Saturday night, Clay Aiken revealed his plan for complete, merciless World Domination. Call it Operation Mandy. Sometime after the too-short intermission, Aiken actually sang the drecky 1970s hit 'Mandy.' Aiken wants to be the Barry Manilow of this century."

Idol worship is the aspiring “Idols” rocking the music charts
Posted on : Wed, 28 Dec 2005 21:02:00 GMT | Author : Jack Myers
News Category : Entertainment

He may not have reached the finals of the "American Idol" but Bo Bice is still a hot man for fans who follow his talent in music and longhaired good looks even if he is less than a winner. All of 30 years, the Alabama resident Bice ended up as a runner-up in the popular show's fourth season. But all his dreams of fame and glory are not shattered at least yet.

He has set his sights on aping Clay Aiken another also-ran, who landed a handsome fortune topping the charts. Bice with his debut disc "The Real Thing" is obviously hoping to encash the recent memory of his work on “American Idols” and the fan following who want more of him. Bice says of his album, “I'm obviously very excited about the album, to see what people think of it". This time round Bice is in control and not making music to someone else's tune.

Bice who has co-written two tracks in the album says, "I had quite a bit of creative control, and I was extremely pleased with that. I had a lot of input". The album with 11 tracks also has a ballad written entirely by Bice titled "Valley of Angels" that has been given a new lease with producer Cliff Magness' involvement. A song that talks about imperfections describes the way "everyone fumbles and falls” and goes seeking serenity and peace.

But just like other peers from American Idols like Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson, Bo Bice seeks a place in the top ten of the Billboard's Top-200 album chart and this maybe the right time. The pre-Christmas week traditionally considered one of the best selling periods of the year for the industry could offer an opportunity for newly launched stars. Already reality TV show stars Clarkson and Will Young (of Pop Idols fame) are ruling the top-15 in terms of weekly sales in UK. Carrie Underwood who won the American Idol 4, already is in Number 2 position with nearly a million copies sold in just over a month after her debut album “Some Hearts” was released.

Bo Bice's album that is at Number 4 seems to hold promise as does Kelly Clarkson's recent album titled “Breakaway” that figures in Number 8 position after a whole year since its release. The past Idol Fantasia is going strong a year after her debut album Free Yourself was released while Clay Aiken has done very well two years after his TV appearance with his album Merry Christmas With Love. With all the Idols doing well in their chosen industry, it cannot be wrong if TV show's creator Simon Fuller comments, "This success is a true testament to the power of Idol fans and people power worldwide”.

Fueller believes that Carrie, Bo and Kelly are examples of the way the Idol format of TV programming works for the music industry. Transporting the stars from obscurity to the limelight, the format allows the public to discover their talent and appeal. The format has now taken on new forms in indigenous programming across the world capturing audiences and fans allowing talent to prevail rather than the one off result. Elsewhere too, the show has afforded the discovery of artistes like Myriam, Pierrick and Amele in France, Kate DeAraugo and Shannon Noll in Australia besides Melissa O'Neil in Canada. Possibly all these successes are evidence of the “Idols” format in being an excellent launch pad for music careers.

IDOLS AMONG US: There are now more Idol contestants roaming the music charts than there are slots to hold them. Bo Bice is huge, Clay Aiken persists in existing and Kelly Clarkson broke the "doomed to obscurity" curse with her second album, Breakaway. Canadian Idol second-place finisher Rex Goudie has sold more albums than the winner Melissa O'Neil. They will tour together in the new year.

'Claymates' cheer Aiken show
By MARTY CLEAR
Published December 30, 2005

Quote
CLEARWATER - It was late in the year for a Christmas concert. But for the Claymates - the oddly fanatical followers of engaging young singer Clay Aiken - the timing and the topic couldn't have mattered less. They would probably have hooted, hollered and swooned just as enthusiastically if their idol had sung a list of area codes.

All but the back few rows of Ruth Eckerd Hall were filled Thursday night for Clay Aiken: Joyful Noise 2005, a bizarre combination of a concert and a play.

The crowd was about 95 percent female, but it was chronologically diverse. Preteens, baby boomers and retirees were about equally represented.

Before Aiken took to the stage, many looked lovingly through the souvenir programs they had bought in the lobby. Others compared notes about shows they had seen on Aiken's current national tour, rattling off the cities where they had caught his act.

The Claymates loved every second of the shows. Even the ones who had already seen it laughed uproariously at lame jokes they had heard before, and screamed approval after his pleasant but bland renditions of familiar holiday songs.

For people who weren't already disciples, though, there was nothing in the show or the performance that would spur a conversion.

Aiken came on stage in a white suit only a shade paler than his skin. He wandered around the stage stiffly, singing and smiling, as actors played out a series of vignettes (written at least partly by Aiken) about an aging woman who rediscovers the joys of Christmas. In the second act, the show morphs into a Christmas pageant in the woman's neighborhood.

Aiken's signing is decent; he wields a soothing tenor voice that complements his demeanor.

But there was almost no emotional dynamic in his singing. Almost every song was delivered with the same amiable interpretation. His limitations were pointed up during a few powerful solos by his excellent backing singers. The nonmusical segments of the evening were witlessly written and amateurishly staged, reminiscent of the production numbers on the Lawrence Welk Show, with silly concepts, inane dialogue and sappy choreography.

Aiken fans went wild, screaming approval of every scene and song and ignoring Aiken's preshow plea to refrain from flash photography.

They gave a similarly enthusiastic reception to the opening act, pianist Michael Joseph, whose 20-minute set featured some fiery technique but lacked any real musical personality. The high point was a ferocious piece called Asturias from his debut CD. The low point was a horrid version of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir.

St Petersburg Times

Guess all that enthusiastic hootin, hollerin and swoonin meant nothin.  Re "amiable interpretations" - hello! It's Christmas music.  Shouldn't it all be "amiable?"  I think so.

Laughing

Great sales numbers - huzzah!

Deanna, your avie still makes me laugh. Laughing

Best friends perform with Clay Aiken from 'American Idol'
Friday, December 30, 2005

Quote
<snip>
The biggest opportunity came when they were both asked to perform on Dec. 6 at the Orpheum Theatre with Clay Aiken from the hit "American Idol" TV show.

"We watched 'American Idol' on television, and then I was on stage with one," Michael said.

"It was a bit surreal to be in Boston on the Orpheum stage in the 'falling snow' singing Christmas songs, surrounded with the familiar voices of your friends, who are each remarkably talented individually. Then let's add the audience of 2,700 looking on, and as you look across the stage, you see that you are sharing it with someone you looked forward to watching and rooted for week after week on 'American Idol.' What a kick!" Paula said.
