“Camp Gonzo” is a summer camp program that gives kids with disabilities the opportunity to have the same camp experiences that other children have. Clay Aiken, a runner-up on American Idol from Raleigh, was a camp counselor before he participated in the contest. According to his foundation, he noticed children with special needs were often unable to participate in summer camp programs often because of the lack of staff members trained to work with children with disabilities. That led Aiken to form the Bubel/Aiken Foundation to bridge the gap between young people with and without disabilities.

Children will be able to participate in swimming, arts and crafts, community service, physical fitness and more at the camp.

I went to our KC Clay Fans meeting yesterday and got to see the crafts the children will be making in the first session of Camp Gonzo in KC. They are making scrapbooks and they are so wonderful! Trudy and Claudia really put a lot of work into this project and I know the children will love them. I have a friend who is a counselor in KC's Camp Gonzo. I wish I could, but am looking forward to hearing her experiences!

The best kind of friend is the one you could sit on a porch with, never saying a word, and walk away feeling like that was the best conversation you've had.

Miss you Kris!
