Title: AIKEN NEWS NETWORK FEBRUARY 19
Post by: aikenseeker on February 19, 2005, 04:25:40 AM
Morning all!

here's Clay's horoscope for the day from yahoo.com!

Quote
Quickie:
Opportunities for romance abound, but it's up to you to make the most of them.

Overview:
You're not really between a rock and a hard place. You're between a sentimental gesture and a sudden change of heart. Bring the two together and you'll have it made -- and so will the person you adore.

Daily Extended Forecast:
Think of your reputation as a party animal, and don't cancel your plans for tonight, even if the person you were going with seems to be a bit on the cranky side. Get them out and about, and help them to put some distance between them and whatever -- or whoever -- the problem was. If anyone can distract someone, after all, it's definitely you. Work your magic!

Daily Flirt:
You were in the mood to flirt with the new cutie in your life today, but they didn't seem game. There's a strong chance it has nothing to do with you. Cool your heels. Try again in a couple days.

Daily Couples:
Act with generosity, and issues between you two will relax back into peace and plenty. Your opposite energies can add interest instead of irritation if you look at differences as something to celebrate.

Daily Singles:
The realm of romance is a little off-kilter -- it's a 'you say good-bye, I say hello' kind of day. If timing's everything, there's a whole lotta nothing going on right now, but your efforts now will be fruitful later.

Daily Career and Finance:
Retreat! It's a great time to really connect with coworkers and others you need to know well. Networking and team-building will go quite well for you.

There's a new Dianne Austin article in the Writer's Corner.

Quote
BEDTIME STORY

The year is 2105 and it’s just after Christmas. A light snow is falling outside, but melting as it hits the ground, because this southern part of the US rarely gets much snow in the winter.

The houses now are constructed a bit differently for the most part, but some of the old fashioned ones are still standing.  This house happens to be one of those.  There is a curving staircase with dark oak banister that is reminiscent of days gone by, and at the top of the stairs is a bedroom where a boy of about six or seven and his Dad are saying good night.

American Idol watch: For those who think that Paula Adbul is consciously acting more argumentative to boost ratings (I've had that thought myself), the Idol producers say otherwise. Such a plan would never work, show producer Ken Warwick told VH1, "partly because Simon is the worst actor in the universe, as you've probably seen." I believe that.

Clay Aiken, as reported here previously, appeared on the TV comedy "Scrubs" this week. Among many Aiken fans, there seems to be a prevailing opinion about his rendition of Stevie Wonder's classic "Isn't She Lovely." Yes, fans seem to be saying, Clay did an excellent job with it, but for his next album, he needs original songs written for him. That makes sense. "Isn't She Lovely" will always be Stevie Wonder's song, no matter how well anyone else sings it. For Aiken to carve out a long term reputation for himself, he needs his own songs. Songs that people hear, and go, "yeah, that's a Clay Aiken song."

Weekend Feedback, 2/18/05

Respect for Paul and Clay
I am a huge Beatles fan and I am 50 years old. I was very happy to see Ed Masley, Post-Gazette pop music critic, defend Paul McCartney ("Paul is not dead," Feb. 11). Mr. McCartney is a legend in music and should be treated with respect. Also, ageism in this country is something that needs to be addressed. We all get older. That does not change who we are or what we are capable of accomplishing.

However, I do take exception to Mr. Masley calling Clay Aiken "a freak." If you don't like his type of music, Mr. Masley, that's fine. To each his own. But I and millions of other people love his voice. More important, as the mother of a disabled child, I am forever indebted to Mr. Aiken for the countless hours he puts in to helping children with disabilities through his Bubel Aiken Foundation. Mr. Aiken also deserves respect.

February 25 is Last Chance to Join Justin Timberlake, Nick Lachey, Amber
Tamblyn, Sean Paul, Clay Aiken, and a Host of Others Who Have Signed
Nationwide Petition Going to Congress -

CARLSBAD, Calif., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- A national online petition drive to support music in America's schools is coming to a star-studded
Congressional presentation next month, but teens everywhere can still participate by visiting http://www.themusicedge.com before the February 25 deadline.
On March 9, talented young performers Justin Guarini, Diana DeGarmo and John Stevens from Fox's American Idol and the legendary Commodores will join other artists and education advocates to deliver the tens of thousands of petition signatures personally to members of Congress and visit Capitol Hill to make their case for saving music education in schools.  The non-profit effort to let kids tell the world they want music in their lives and in their schools is an initiative of NAMM, the International Music Products Association, its non-profit affiliate the American Music Conference (AMC) and its teen web site, http://themusicedge.com, along with TEEN PEOPLE and Fanscape, a youth entertainment marketing company.
The petition to Congress on behalf of music education got its start in June 2002, when Justin Timberlake broke the news on MTV's Total Request Live. Since then, TEEN PEOPLE and themusicedge.com have encouraged thousands of young people to add their names alongside celebrities like Clay Aiken, Nick Lachey, Sean Paul, JC Chasez, Nick Cannon, Yellowcard, Amber Tamblyn, Ashlee Simpson, Pharrell Williams, Fefe Dobson, Ben Jelen, Samaire Armstrong and Adam Brody.
"Hundreds of thousands of kids are losing the opportunity to participate in school music programs because of drastic budget cuts in arts programs," says Joe Lamond, President and CEO of NAMM, which promotes the benefits of music, music research and music education.  "Music education offers too many benefits to developing minds for this issue to go unnoticed.  We need to give kids the opportunity to have a well-rounded education, and we need to empower more of them and their parents to voice their concerns."
The petition's delivery to Congress highlights NAMM's national activities to advance support of music education during the month of March. TEEN PEOPLE, NAMM and AMC urge teens across the country to sign the petition on themusicedge.com before February 25, and help keep school-based music programs alive.

'Idol' Run Ends For 1 N.C. Woman; Another Remains

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A Guilford County woman among the final 44 contestants on "American Idol," was eliminated from the show Wednesday.

Tammy Wynette Nash, a 28-year-old shoe saleswoman from Greensboro, was among 20 people cut from the fourth season of the Fox television show. More than 100,000 wannabe pop stars auditioned for the show and the recording contract that comes with the title of "American Idol."

On Wednesday's show, judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell reviewed tapes of previous performances for the remaining contestants and eliminated them one by one.

Abdul broke the bad news to Nash -- she isn't one of the 12 women and 12 men who will compete for America's vote.

"Well, thank you for the opportunity," Nash said. "I really do thank you."

Nash hoped to join the ranks of North Carolina natives Clay Aiken and Fantasia Barrino. Aiken was runner-up in the second season of the show, while Barrino won last season's competition.

Sarah Mather, a 22-year-old from Wilmington who auditioned in Washington, D.C., is one of the remaining 24 contestants. The Canadian-born Mather graduated from high school in Charlotte and has appeared in Wilmington bands since 2001.

Meet the Prettier, Older 'Idol' Top 24
(snip)
Looking over the Top 24, it's striking how conventionally attractive a group it is (with the exception of the strong-lunged Scott Savol). Aesthetically, this group harkens back to the first "Idol" season when the Top 12 was composed of a bunch of pretty people who, as a rule, could barely carry a tune. As a response to that first group, in subsequent seasons an effort was made to suggest that talent might be more important than image on "Idol," allowing for successful runs by several overweight belters and more than a couple singers who were just plain funny-looking. Perhaps the producers this year saw enough fantastic crooners and chanteuses that they felt it unnecessary to sacrifice either skills or looks, but glancing at their headshots, it's doubtful that there will be any kind of remarkable makeovers this season. There's no room in this group for a Frenchie Davis, Kim Locke, Clay Aiken or Ruben Studdard, a fact that may upset some fans.

CLAY'S ACCIDENTAL HIT

Speaking of Clay Aiken, his fans continue to break new ground in their efforts to possess any artifact that has some connection to the almost-Idol.

Case in point: The promotional video singing the praises of downtown Raleigh, in which Aiken makes a brief appearance -- but not so brief as to keep his fans from wanting a copy of it.

Aiken was recruited last fall to participate in the eight-minute video, which is being sent out to developers and real estate brokers who are considering a project in downtown Raleigh (or need a nudge in that direction). A number of local bigwigs appear on the video, but it's Aiken who provides the celebrity firepower, declaring that he loves seeing "all the exciting changes" that are under way downtown.

It's a single sentence, comprising 44 words. No matter. The video is now, officially, a holy relic.

"We've had all these Claymates wanting to buy the video," says Patty Briguglio, who helps the Downtown Raleigh Alliance with its PR.

Reaction from developers -- the people the Alliance hoped to excite -- is much more muted. But it's still early -- the video was sent out only only weeks ago, Briguglio says.

Hi Everybody !   :wave

I jump in every morning to catch the news before I go to work, but since I definitely AM NOT a "morning person", I don't post at that time.  Even though I'm usually getting ready for work, any thought processes are a few cups of coffee away!

But I am so thankful that this thread is "one-stop shopping" to begin each day.   You do a fantastic job !

Thanks Susan, Deanna and Pamela for today's news.  And, Lorraine, I always look forward to your morning visit.  You have so much enthusiasm!

Sometimes I don't get back to this thread until late at night, but it is always worth the trip.

JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE YOU ALL KNOW THAT WE LOVE THIS THREAD!:thx
