As the runner-up to Fox TV's second American Idol: The Search for a Superstar competition, vocalist Clay Aiken wowed television audiences in 2003 with his Southern charm, sweet demeanor, and bright, glorious voice. Out of 7,000 hopefuls, the Charlotte, N.C., native won the hearts of the judges as well as millions of fans across the globe. Born November 30, 1978, Aiken was singing at an early age. Unlike most kids, Aiken was confident and ready to impress a crowd. He was already singing the Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers classic "Islands in the Stream" at a local high school dance by age 5. Two years later, he was buying albums through a mail-order catalog, eager to get his hands on any kind of music. Aiken's vocal talent was blossoming, and by the time he reached his teenager years, he was a regular member of the Raleigh Boys Choir. When it came time to go to college, music wasn't Aiken's calling per se. He studied special education instead and had dreams of attending William & Mary for a master's degree in administration. Before he could further his education, Aiken ended up wooing 21 million viewers each week from February to May with his sensational singing voice. His rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" sewed him a spot among America's hearts. Although he finished second to Ruben Studdard, Aiken's loss was not taken lightly. He landed a deal with RCA within weeks of the show's finale. That same month, Aiken's debut single, "This Is the Night," made history by going No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. It sold more than 392,000 copies during its first week, beating Elton John's record for "Candle in the Wind" in 1997. In October 2003, Aiken issued his studio full length, The Measure of a Man. Once again, the little guy with the big voice made a big splash. The Measure of a Man sold 613,000 copies and went No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 during its first week of release.
BEN JELEN
Jelen (pronounced Yellin) is a traveler, scholar, lyricist, and musician. Music was the constant throughout frequent moves from Scotland to England, Texas, New Jersey, and finally, New York. Always in a new place, he never formed a band of his own, but practiced solo on piano, violin, and guitar. In college he earned a biology degree from Rutgers University Jelen finally got on stage while sitting in with friends at occasional gigs. He fed on the thrill of connecting to an audience that was focused and moving to his rhythms. At each performance, Jelen poured his songs into the piano and everyone knew they were in on something special. After graduation, he committed entirely to music and made the move to Manhattan.
Ben Jelenís debut album, GIVE IT ALL AWAY (Maverick), showcases a self-taught musician whose introspective songs are balanced by an optimistic belief in new beginnings.

I met Dianne Austin when she came to Raleigh about a month ago. She is just lovely, as is her daughter Chelsea, husband Chuck and her mother Shirley is a wonder and a spitfire!

Clay Aiken & Tim Mcgraw take top honors at 2004 NMW Awards

LOS ANGELES (New Music Weekly Awards press release) - New Music Weekly magazine held their awards show in Los Angeles this weekend, Saturday (June 26th) at the famous Key Club theatre to a capacity crowd. Artists, record labels and radio were all in "full force" for a spectacular three-hour event that brought in some major new talent as well as top-notch celebrities.

Clay Aiken won for "Top40 Male Artist of the Year", while Tim McGraw took the honor for favorite "crossover" artist. Scarlett Pomers from the hit television series, "Reba" (WB Network) was there to present and to accept an award on behalf of Reba McEntire for "Favorite Female Country Artist".
Independent artists were also represented as Los Angeles based and GRAMMY Nominated Debbie Hennessey won for "AC Female Artist of the Year". Radio stations from all over the country were present to take home top honors. Live performances included AC nominee turned "winner", Bruce Sudano who thrilled the capacity audience with his "Le Imagine Café" and new Country star Kelly Lang who also performed to a strong ovation her current hit, "Single Mother".

Aren't the seating areas funny for the fair!! You will know as soon as you get the tickets. It's nerve racking not knowing though. Although, in this case, I don't know what's worse...not knowing where the seat is or if you are even gonna have a seat!

They also reported being checked twice for cameras. The place is not sold out, and there's a lot of men there.

Clay sold the RBC Center out in 12 minutes for the concert in March...it seats a little over 12, 000 for a concert like Clay's! That's why there is so much concern...the fair is half that much!

Christie, he wasn't fast coming out at Ft. Wayne, we just wanted to be right up at the fence and not way in the back.  It also depends on where you are sitting and if it is close to the exit and on what side you are on.  I was on the closest side and right near the exit in Ft Wayne and I was able to hear all of Solitaire and still was standing at the fence and touched both of his arms.

It think we were standing there waiting for him to come out for a good 45min atleast.  Don't ya think Renee??

Lima Bean Casserole
(for crockpot cookers) 1 pound dry lima beans 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon molasses 1 tablespoon dry mustard
1/4 to 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup sour cream


Cover beans with water. Drain, refill pot with water to cover beans, bring to boil and simmer till soft. Drain. In crockpot, mix beans and butter. Mix together sugar, salt, mustard. Sprinkle on beans. Stir molasses and sour cream together, pour over beans and mix all together. Cover and cook in crockpot on low for 4 to 6 hours. Makes 6 servings.
 
Butter Bean Custard Pie 1 cup large white butter beans, dried 2 eggs
3 cups water 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 cups white sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter or margarine 1/4 teaspoon cream (half and half)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 unbaked 9 inch pie shell
1 pinch salt  


Soak dried beans in water overnight. The next morning, take hull off beans. Cook until well done in water. Do not add seasoning. Drain; mash beans. Add sugar, flour, butter, vanilla, eggs and salt to beans. Mix well. Add cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and cream. Blend together. Pour into a 9-inch unbaked pie shell. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 to 45 minutes. Makes 1 - 9 inch pie.
