Title: HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? CHAPTER 2
Post by: Prissy on June 17, 2009, 01:44:15 PM
HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?

The original Garden Thread reached page 101 and 2000 posts, so I am starting a new chapter for us to continue posting garden pictures and about our gardens.

This is how it all began:

This is a thread for you to post pictures of your beautiful gardens and yards.  Some have posted some lovely pictures in the OCD, and I thought it would be fun to have  garden pictures all in one place.

Please share your gardens with us.

Prissy

PS:  I knew the title for this thread was part of a poem.  It's actually from Mother Goose:

Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
Silver bells and cockle-shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.

Special memories of Debi/ydebi who posted many beautiful pictures of gardens and flowers, including her own little flower, Aisalynn, as we begin this new chapter of gardens.

Jules shared with us some of her gorgeous container flowers.

:wave I thought I'd share some pictures of the flowers and hydrangeas I've planted and placed in front of my house these last two days.

The ones with the blue flowers is called a 'Felicia' plant and supposed to attract butterflies.

My dad gave me this Alovera plant from his gardens about 2 years ago and this is the first time it is going to bloom any flowers. Can't wait to see. :bigsmile

Frankie posted these pictures for us.

Our magnolia tree is beginning to bloom  :clap I wish I knew how old it is. As you see, if you look closely, it begins to bloom from the bottom up, and is really beautiful when the blooms reach all of the way to the top: (That is our Yorkie Tuffy standing beneath the tree)

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_garden061309003.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/garden061309003.jpg)

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_garden061309001.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/garden061309001.jpg)

Lewis and the granddaughters wanted to grow some gourds and small "Jack Be Little" pumpkins, but could not grow them on the fence because the horses next door like to eat them. So he decided to let them run all over the small greenhouse - including the roof:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_garden061309006.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/garden061309006.jpg)

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_garden061309005.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/garden061309005.jpg)

I think I have mentioned before that the small greenhouse is built out of old racks from a telephone company central office. They were going to be thrown away when new equipment was installed, and Lewis believes in recycling in the garden. This greenhouse has lasted for over 15 years now - we just cover it will heavy plastic every winter, and the plants do fine in it.

Deanna - do you still read this Thread? I have wondered many times if you and the grandchildren planted their garden - if so, I would love to see it!  :bouncy

SKIP'S "TOMATO" TREE!
We lost limbs from this tree a while back due to high winds.  And we have decided to put the greenhouse in this area by the house (garage).  Instead of cutting the tree all the way down, we decided to make use of it.  Skip made a hole in the bottom of the coco baskets and  has planted tomato plants upside down in coco baskets and flowers in the top of the baskets.  Not all were planted when I took these pictures!!

Prissy, this is a wonderful way to start the next 100 pages!

We have had rain about 18 of the last 20 days and when the sun did poke out it wasn't for long. I'm still wearing my winter sweaters for the most part. Annoying!

Our garden and flowers are growing but many things are just beaten down by the rain.

Last week Norm passed a small garden center here in town and saw what he thought were tall snapdragons so he circled back and bought them. We haven't seen any tall ones in years. He went out and planted them in pots early this morning before the rain started again.

Thank you for starting this new Thread, Prissy - it took me a while to find it!

Mary - We desperately need your rain - it is so hot here, and no rain in sight. The grass is dying (no way to water it), but we are trying to keep at least part of the garden and the flowers alive.

I went to the small zoo in Alexandra, Louisiana with the grandchildren yesterday (actual temperature 100 - heat index 110!  :lol ) We were helped by the beautiful live oak trees. These photos do not do justice to just how pretty this little zoo is. There are wooden walkways throughout the zoo- people stay on the walkways, while the animals live in their open enclosures. some of the walkways are on ground level, then change, via ramps, to the tops of the trees, where you are very often looking down at the animals. Here are a couple of photos - Click To Enlarge:

This is just a shot of an elevated walkway - as you see, the walkway to the right leads back down to ground level:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_zoo061909005.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/zoo061909005.jpg)

Two shots of the live oaks - these photos do not do them justice. These are the tops of the trees - they are huge:

The building in the right corner of this photo is the zoo's animal hospital:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_zoo061909009.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/zoo061909009.jpg)

Prissy - these are for you and Skip. Many of the animal enclusures are built around a hige Koi pond. I bet the smallest Koi here weigh 4-5 pounds:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_zoo061909016.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/zoo061909016.jpg)

Great pictures, Frankie!

That sure looks like a lot of koi in one place.  And they can really get huge.

Thanks to Michelle for placing the new Garden Thread in a "sticky" position!!

Prissy - the grandchildren were feeding the Koi (they sell fish food at the zoo), so that is why there were so many in one spot. I wonder, though if they don't sometimes have to remove and either sell or donate Koi to other zoos - there are so many of them. This Koi pond is concrete, with freash water running in from many sides - it also has several waterfalls.

My Japenese iris are starting to bloom. They are little minitures of the iris and the leaves are so neat as they sway in the breeze. Also my perfect lavendar Iris are now blooming.

PRISSY, glad you got my pictures and it was so nice of you to post them.  Wished everyone could see the Japenese Iris in person.  They are gorgeous in full bloom in between the thin leaves.  We are supposed to get storms tonight and tomorrow and possible hail so didn't want to wait to take the picture as the flowers and buds may get tore up, I pray they won't.  Yep Jack looks pretty good, I just love the little guy!!!!!!!!

I can't see Pepe's photos!  :bang My computer tries, and tries, but they never show up. I clicked on the empty space where the photos were, and I did get the photo of Jack to come up (love him), but that did not work on the flower photos - I really need a new computer!!!!! (And when I find that money tree, I am buying one!  :lol )

Sasha - I am going to send you some of our sunshine - we are over-blessed with it! So good to see you here.  :hugg

FRANKIE, hitting the Shift button and clicking on the Refresh icon simultaneously.  Sometimes that will bring up the pictures.  It just worked for me.

Sasha, I know what you mean about the tomatoes with all the rain. Ours are doing okay but they may be watery. For the last few years I have grown one tomato plant on the deck and the pot drains well. Norm is worried about his in the garden. He didn't plant as many as he has in the past because he is the only one who eats them.

Dudley, those roses are great.  I think that we may have to relocate ours. Only three are surviving and one of them is on life support.

We have a grand total of 2 gladiolas and 2 mums when we had so many years ago.

I grew up a city girl so wildlife fascinates and frustrates me. The robins had babies and they seem to have survived so far. The rabbit was looking like she was going to give birth any day and sure enough I spotted two a few days ago. Norm said that there were 4. Then today I saw 7! Yikes! So cute. They like to hang out under the green been bushes. Guess how many string beans we will get this year? I brought my camera out but didn't get a shot because mama was feeding them I didn't have the heart to interrupt that.

The Calla Lillie's and Shasta daises are blooming! Years ago I made a stained glass Daisey lamp and sold it in a garage sale. Sometimes I wish that I still had it.

My boys gave me tickets to a Broadway show for my birthday and my two sisters came with me. If you ever get a chance to see West Side Story do it. We ate at Junior's and it reminded me of seeing Clay in Spamalot.

I am excited to have a new water feature/fountain  behind the diving board.  I always wanted something special in this area and saw these huge fountain vase type urns at Whiz Q Stone.  The one I chose is medium blue with black and is 3 feet tall with a square twisted shape.

We are not quite finished with the bottom of the feature.  We need to hide the liner and add river rocks, but I am excited to see the water bubbling out the top and over the sides!!  :bigsmile

I never could see the photos of Pepe's flowers - I did try Thea's suggestion, but no luck!

Mary - there is nothing iin the world as cute as a baby rabbit (until they start eating your garden! )  :lol

Prissy - beautiful caladums (one of my favotirites - I love all varieties!), and water lilly. The water lilly we have had for years has never bloomed. I think our tiny goldfish pond is too shallow, and the water gets too hot. I love your fountain - very pretty!  :clap

Lewis is atttempting to grow some large pumpkins for the grandchildren, although there is not much hope in this heat. He does have a pot of "Jack Be Little" pumpkins that should do well. The pumpkins are the size of baseballs, and the grandchildren have always enjoyed them. They make so many that each of the grandchildren have taken enough for their entire classes to decorate in the past. Lewis bought a packet of seeds for giant pumpkins - supposedly from a grand champion pumpkin. The packet cost almost $5, and there were only three seeds inside!  :jaw He just planted them this week (if you plant pumpkins down here early, they will rot in the summer heat). At least all three seeds have already come up - hope we get at least a couple of big pumpkins!

Prissy, I love your fountain and caladiums. We would have to lift those plants every year so I didn't buy any because Norm lifts so many things in the fall as it is.

Momma rabitt was nursing her 7 little bunnies and I did take a picture.

Did you know that the babies nurse on their back? I didn't. It was cute seeing all their legs kicking with excitment.

Thought I would post a couple of quick photos - the sunflowers are just beginning to bloom - they are about 10 feet high - and Sasha's hibiscus have been blooming all summer. She sent seeds for two different colors last year, but I think the bees have mixed them, and there is a third color! We meant to move the hibiscus this Spring so that the plants would not be so crowded, but with all of the storms, they got to big before we had a chance to move them - maybe next Spring!  Click to make bigger:

PRISSY, wished I could come and visit your yard and see the whole thing at once.  I love it when people really enjoy their yards, oh by the way how is the pond coming?  :lol  I do think you should schedule the Pond Club Meeting in the fall at your house!!!

MARY,  love the baby animals, nothing more precious than babies!!!

FRANKIE, great pictures and am sure SASHA would love to see them.  Just got a pm from her today saying she was leaving today for Lake Tahoe, California for vacation.  Lucky her, wish we could all go!!!!  With the weather she has been having in MA she will not want to come home.

Pepe - I heard from Sasha during the night, too - she is going to also visit San Jose - I told her that was Shirl's home before she moved into assisted living. She was supposed to send some of her rain down here before she left, but it hasn't gotten here yet! I hope it is sunny in California for her. She knows that hibiscus photos will be here when she gets back - with Kaitlyn here, I just did not have time to post them sooner!

Good Afternoon!

Frankie,
Great pictures of the sunflowers;  they make me think of Debi.   That looks like a banana plant behind the sunflowers?  Beautiful hibiscus, too.  They look a lot like our Rose of Sharon/Althea plants.

Pepe,
We are scheduled to have the Pond Meeting at our place this coming September "come h*ll or high water!!"  :lol  The pond looks pretty good;  we'll just see if the filtration system and waterfall is working by that time!!

Mary,
I'm glad you enjoyed the caladium pictures.  We buy caladium bulbs by the bag full and plant them each year.  They are fairly reasonable when you buy the bulbs.  We are lucky in that our elephant ears come back each year.

I'm glad you all enjoyed seeing the fountain behind the diving board.  It is now complete.  Round stones are in the wood base where there is also  a liner.

:hugs

I "rescued" a pot person from Whiz Q Stone.  She had some chips on her, but not that noticeable, and was sitting all alone!  I am calling her Chip and my other pot person Dale.  :lol  I put a tiny corsage on Chip, to cover her chipped shoulder and to show she's the girl!  :lol  I may have to add something to Dale, too.  Maybe he can be holding a flower!

They are now sitting on the bakers rack on the patio with my pots of impatience flowers that have stopped blooming!  :para

Prissy - glad that Chip has come to live at your house!  :lol Yes, those are banana trees behind the sunflowers. We have had the large banana trees for years, but they have never produced bananas.  During years when we have gotten lots of rain, they have grown to as much as 20 feet high - but this year they are only around 12-14 feet. They do multiply just as the pink banana trees do. The variegated leaf banana tree that I bought last year has also produced lots of other trees. It is very short, and so far there is no sign of bananas.

Mary - I am enjoying the sunflowers. There are lots of blooms now - I haven't checked to see if the seeds have matured, but I'm sure the birds will let me know when they are!

Pepe - In the Spring I always try to find different things for Lewis' garden - it is fun to see them grow and to try new vegetables. This year I found several varieties of tomatoes that we had not tried before. Here are two - I put them on a saucer for the photos so you could see the size:

This tomato is called "Golden Jubilee". The plant is very big - I am 5'5" tall, and it is taller than I am (Lewis just put a regular tomato cage around it at first, and had to add on!) I only bought one plant, and I bet it has produced at least 40 tomatoes so far (8 were picked this morning). The tomatoes are consistently about the size of a baseball, and it is a low acid tomato:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_garden070809002.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/garden070809002.jpg)

This tomato is called "Amish", and I wonder if it is  for Northern gardens. It was planted the same time as the Golden Jubilee, and this is the first tomato we have gotten off of it. You can't really tell, but the color is a very dark pink instead of red. We plan to taste test tonight! The plant is also very large.

I was happily surprised, a few weeks back, when a pot person appeared in my mailbox!  :bouncy As soon as I saw her, I knew for sure that her name was Priscilla P. Imatexan. Sadly, her hat was broken beyond repair (I have a large collection of different glues now if anyone needs them!), but I told her not to worry - I knew we could find some thing to replace her hat. Granddaughter Laney came, and we had lots of fun shopping for Priscilla:

Click photos to Enlarge:

We found a straw doll's hat, and added ribbons, daisies, and a butterfly:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_priscilla003.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/priscilla003.jpg)

Her shoes were a tad too masculine, so we added bows:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_garden070809003.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/garden070809003.jpg)

Laney donated "bling" from her stash of crafts supplies for Priscilla's buttons and her bracelet and ring:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_garden070809006.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/garden070809006.jpg)

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_priscilla005.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/priscilla005.jpg)

She is holding a daisy in her other hand, and another butterfly is perched on her shoulder:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_garden070809004.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/garden070809004.jpg)

And here is Priscilla so far - Laney and I are trying to decide if she needs a doll's wig or Louisiana moss for hair, or if she needs a face. I have drawn several faces, but may just leave her as is. She is going to live on one of the benches in the yard or on the swing. All of her decorations are just put on with a touch of hot glue, so she may change clothes in the Fall - I will leave that up to her  :lol

Laney and I had a lot of fun dressing her - thank you again to the very kind person in Texas who sent her our way!  :hugg

Frankie,

Your "Pot person" Priscilla is adorable.  I think  that my Chip is probably hoping she will have more than a corsage to adorn her!!    :lol

I have an idea for hair:  raffia, like that used to give a natural look to packages.  I have some yellow raffia.  I am wondering about cutting strips, lining them up and then sewing it across one end or putting tape across one end.  I may even be able to make some pig tails with bows for Chip!  We'll see how this goes.  Maybe Dale will get some "bangs!"  :wink

I'm afraid that Skip's upside down tomatoes did not work out.  No tomatoes for us this year, but my sister is keeping us supplied from her garden.

Yours look great!

Pepe,
I'm glad I got Chip to be a partner for Dale!  Now, I am tempted to add some small flowers, butterflies, etc., like Frankie did.  I still don't think I will add a face.  :dunno

Prissy - the moss I am considering for "hair" is the Spanish moss that hangs from the trees here - not as common in our part of Louisiana as it is in the south part of the state, but you can still find it here - especially around the lake.

FRANKIE, I would like to second that thank you to the very kind and thoughtful person who sent such a wonderful gift!!!  Jack sits in my kitchen so he can watch me cook and smell all the food smells.  He is a little pig!  Always say good morning to him as I walk in to the kitchen, yep I am one of those people that thinks everything has a heart and if something happens to one of my treasures I bawl like a baby, ask my hubby about that!!!!  :lol I was lucky Jack's hat was broke in three places but they were clean breaks so hubby was able to glue in back and you can't even tell where it was broke.  What interesting tomatoes!!!!  Sure must be fun to get all that produce from the garden, my tomato plants are doing nothing, don't think anything wants to grow in night time temps of 45 degree .  Yep the heat is still running this morning.

PRISSY, Chip and Dale will be very happy together I am sure.  Has JoAnn named hers  yet???

Frankie, I think that last year you said that you were freezing green beans and I would like to know how long you boil them before freezing them. Mine are always soggy when I cook them again.

Title: Re: HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? CHAPTER 2
Post by: fhmmany2 on July 13, 2009, 08:52:39 AM
Mary - If you like firmer green beans, just blanche them in hot water  instead of cooking them completely (you can tell when it's been long enough, because the color of the beans will change a little). It only takes a few  minutes.(3-4 in boiling water). I freeze everything in plastic freezer boxes, that I buy at Walmart in the freezing/canning section (they have a section for that every summer - I assume in all stores). When the beans are put into the boxes, I also put the water they were cooked in - enough to cover the beans so that they do not get freezer burned. If you blanche the beans you should be able to cook them as much as you want once defrosted.

Hello, fellow gardeners!

Pepe - I hope you are feeling well enough to get here. This is a photo of the mild peppers that Lewis picked this morning (it is not the greatest photo - I need to change my camera batteries!!!!!) - the red ones down front are pimento peppers, and there are different colors of bells, Anaheims, etc. All of these peppers can be used in any recipe that uses bell peppers. What am I going to do with them? I am going to take them to daughter's MIL this afternoon when I pick up the grandchildren - she can deal with them!  :lol

FRANKIE, oh my what beautiful produce.  I would cut them in strips and blanch them and freeze them for chili, spaghetti, goulash and stir fry.  Peppers have gotten so ridiculous in price at the store.  Wished I was your neighbor.  :lol

Title: Re: HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? CHAPTER 2
Post by: fhmmany2 on August 06, 2009, 10:18:16 PM
Pepe - I wish you were my neighbor, too! This time of year we give so much away, because our freezer is almost full. I cut some peppers in strips and freeze them in plastic bags - it is easy to take out just the amount needed for a recipe. I also freeze bell peppers whole - just cut the tops off, take the seeds out, and freeze. I use these for stuffed peppers, of course. They are soft when they defrost, but that is O.K. for stuffing. The pimentos are used for making pimento cheese. They have an extremely tough outer skin. You just cut them up, take the seeds out, and boil. After they are cooled, the skin is removed with a sharp paring knife (impossible to peel unless boiled first), and then I freeze them in little jars (baby food jars are perfect!) until time to use. This year, since Lewis has the pepper griller, I am also freezing jalapeno peppers - as with the bell peppers, I cut the tops off, and take the seeds out first.

SASHA, fabulous pictures.  Love that fairy in your garden in the first picture.  She is so beautiful! Everything is perfect and no weeds!!!  I have not been able to work in my  yard at all this  year and it is pitiful.   Thanks so much for bringing your pictures so we can see part of  your yard.  Hope your garden does good.

BETTY, your yard is absolutely gorgeous.  Very artistic!  Love the plantings around the large palm tree.

FRANKIE, thanks for posting these on BETTY's behalf.  I feel terrible that I never got around to posting anything from my yard this summer.  All of my clumps of daylilies are now bloomed out.  The coneflowers have taken over my perennial garden to the point that my Russian sage grass isn't growing.  Maybe in the fall I'll finally get around to pulling up some of the coneflowers.

SASHA, you entire yard is so beautiful.  Not a weed in sight!  :lol :notworthy

Anyway, I've been enjoying the photos all summer.  Thanks to all of the contributors!!!

BTW, SASHA, do you add Miracid to the soil around your blue hydrangeas to keep them blue?  We have some white ones along the back of our house and I have always wished we had planted blue ones instead.  Supposedly the color comes from a high acidity of the soil.

Betty,

How nice to get to see your new landscaping!  Beautiful yard and I always love that tropical look that Floridians and others near the coast can get.  My niece in Houston has huge palm trees in her yard.

Thanks, Frankie, for bringing Betty's pictures here.

Frankie:  thanks for posting Betty pictures.   you did a great job Betty.  :clap  your right Prissy nice to see tropical plants.

Thea:  I havent given them that in a while.  I use to but they are pretty blue, without me giving them that.  they are probably 21 years old, they are really beautiful this year with all the rain we had...

SASHA, Our white hydrangeas are very full and lush this year, as well, thanks to the rain we got here in Illinois.  But blue hydrangeas would be even more beautiful!  I may add some Miracid to them next spring just to see what happens.   :wink

PhotoBucket is not working correctly today, but I am going to see if I can post photos by using the "back door".

Prissy - if this works, these are photos of Priscilla on her butterfly bench - I've gotten some Mums for her this weekend:

FRANKIE, Priscilla looks adorable, she looks lonely though.  If I lived closer I would bring Jack over for a visit with her, heck we might even have some little pot people running around!!!!  :lmao  Did you paint her dress ???  Love the Butterfly bench and Priscilla is just enjoying the afternoon sitting there.

Pepe - we would love for you and Jack to come visit!  :hugg Priscilla had her green dress when she got here - I just added the flower buttons.

Frankie,
Priscilla looks very relaxed and at home on the butterfly bench!!   Love the mums near her, too.  My Chip and Dale are still on the bakers rack.  My flowers died in the ceramic pots on the baker's rack, but I have more flowers to put in them!  :thumb

Pepe,
All of our little pot people have the green bodies and hats, I believe.   Frankie's Priscilla's green hat was too broken, so now she wears the cute straw hat.

I am still tempted to add some "bling" to my pot people, too.  :wink  Of course, Chip still has her "corsage."

Pepe - What a good idea - since Prissy has two pot people, she can make Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus  :lol

I don't know about other parts of the country, but down here, because it is so hot and (usually) wet, ferns very often grow up in the tops of trees. This limb fell down in a wind storm last week. We have been sprinkling the limb with the water hose whenever we water flowers, and the ferns look like they are going to live - Lewis moved the limb next to the patio. I took these just as it was getting dark tonight, and used the flash - thought someone might be interested, in case they've never seen this before:

Title: Re: HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? CHAPTER 2
Post by: Pepe on September 02, 2009, 04:55:24 PM
FRANKIE, how fascinating!!  Strange that straight across the limb the ferns are growing not just one or two.  That would have been a sight to have seen if the limb would have stayed up in the tree with the ferns growing.  Wonder how the fern spores got way up there in the tree?

Title: Re: HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? CHAPTER 2
Post by: fhmmany2 on September 02, 2009, 07:21:25 PM
Pepe - My guess is they get blown into the trees by the wind, or birds carry them there - you usually only see them in very tall, older trees.

Title: Re: HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? CHAPTER 2

Frankie,

Very unusual about the ferns growing on the tree limbs.  Skip loves ferns and would probably be thrilled to see ferns in our trees!

Here is our water feature "Willie's Dilemma," finally with water coming out of the fountain.  Willie is still trying to get a drink, but hard with that ice cream cone in his hand!!  :lol I found a little dog statue to be with Willie.

Pepe,

We have had the Willie statue for years, but now he is a "working fountain" and we have placed him as a centerpiece in a bed by the fence.  The elephant ears around him we moved from near the pool.  These are the huge elephant ears that have grown for years.  Now that they have no canopy of trees to shade them, they were struggling.  So, we took a chance on transplanting them.  So far, so good!  :cross

The water lily I hope will be put in the pond today.  It had three "bulbs" on it, so hopefully, it will have some blooms.  I think the flower I saw has closed up  :para  but, hopefully, it will reopen again.

:hugs
Prissy

I am behind putting pictures in my photobucket.

On July, 14, my youngest sister turned 50 and we had a birthday lunch at another sister's home.  This sister has a garden every summer, and this was some of the produce she had spread out in her breakfast room.

Pepe,
My sister always has a big garden each year.  We did get lots of tomatoes from her.  She does make the best pickles with sweet purple onions!  Delicious!
I will take a picture of the purple water lily soon.  It is still in the big tub and not in the pond yet!   :para

Frankie,
This was what my sister had harvested that week, I believe.  She always has lots of vegetables.  We should try for a Fall garden.  We didn't do well with summer!!  The Willie fountain is a favorite!  Everyone at the Pond meeting really liked it.

PRISSY, love the pond and how it is coming along.  It looks very natural.  How deep is it?  My son has a huge pond he put in but did not use a liner!!!!  He has had eagles fishing in his for the trout he put in .  I should take a picture he has had trouble with algae this year though.  The picture of Shadow and Sandy is just fabulous.  Such good dogs that mind so well and pose beautiful!

Prissy - the pond is beautiful! I think it was worth the wait!  Tell Skip  :clap  and  :notworthy Have you already put the Koi and goldfish back in? I forgot to ask what you did with them when you changed the pond from two small ponds to one large one. (When our neighbor did this several years ago he kept his fish outside in a large tank until his pond renovations were done). The water lillys look great, too! They have such beautiful blooms.

Thanks, Pepe, Frankie, and Thea!
The pond is indeed an ongoing project for Skip!!

Sunday morning we walked around the backyard and I took some pictures.  The grass in the middle section of the backyard is new sod that we have not had mowed yet, so it is looking a little overgrown.

ALL PICTURES ARE CLICKABLE.

I now have three water features in the backyard.  The newest one is a blue/black ceramic ball with water spouting out the top.  It is about the size of a basketball and we put it in a planter on the deck!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010686.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010686.jpg)

Here is "Willie's Dilemma" again.  These elephant ears are the ones that we've had for years by the pool deck.  They were sweltering in the sun (no trees to shade them there anymore) and Skip took a chance on moving them.  We are very pleased that they survived and are thriving!!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010687.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010687.jpg)   (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010688.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010688.jpg)

My first water feature continues to give me so much enjoyment.  This is the one behind the diving board.  It is about 3 feet tall. (In the second picture, you can see the back of it and a little of the filter material and the pump.)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010689.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010689.jpg)   (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010690.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010690.jpg)

Here are some flowers around the pond.

To the left of the pond, purple verbena with some yellow lantana

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010675.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010675.jpg)

In front of the right side of the pond, these are purple/pink flowers that have really loved all the rain we've received.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010678.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010678.jpg)

Just behind the left side of the pond, pink rock rose with pink and yellow lantana behind it.  I wish the flowers were more distinct in the pictures.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010680.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010680.jpg)   (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010681.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010681.jpg)

More pictures from the backyard

A yellow canna that has started to bloom.  We have more grouped in this area.  We have orange ones by the star gate.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010677.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010677.jpg)

New elephant ears planted this spring in front of the shed and hiding some of the pond filter equiupment

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010682.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010682.jpg)

Knockout roses that are blooming again this Fall.  The bed in front of the roses is my "Purple" bed that has become overgrown.  Some of the purple plants are 3 and 4 feet tall.  We will have to do some moving of plants out of this bed at some point.

Some miscellaneous shots from the backyard.

Fall table cloth on one of the gazebo tables with the "fat red wooden birds" I found at Lowes!!  I have 8 of them to set on tables, counter, etc.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010691.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010691.jpg)

"Mosaic" vinyl table covering I ordered for my round concrete umbrella table.  I love it and it looks really good on the concrete table and blends in with the blue tile of the pool and the two blue water features!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/th_P1010693.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Prissy2/House%20and%20Yard%20II/P1010693.jpg)

On the fence by my "star" gate, I put some more Texas items I have had for a while!!  (The big lacy looking stars I found at Big Lots and the smaller stars and the round rings with Texas in them I got at KOHL'S several years ago.  They were with western type ornaments!!)

Prissy - your yard is always beautiful - I love all of the water features you and Skip have added this summer.  :clap

We have moved everything into the greenhouses today for the winter - not going to put the plastic on now, because we know we will have lots more warm weather before it gets cold for good here (sometime in December!)

I took some photos while I was outside.

Pepe - Ever since the Fall decorations have appeared, Priscilla P. Imatexan is no longer lonely  :lol (I still think she needs a face so she can smile back at people!)

I cut all of the roses back, and since they were all full of buds, I brought them inside. This is  one of my favorite - a yellow rose with orange/red tips. I love yellow roses so much you would think I was from Texas!  :lol

We have had so much rain this week that everything is blooming, including this red hibiscus:

This reminded me so much of debi - the first crop of zinnias was finished long ago, but volunteers plants came up from the seeds of the first zinnias (they are all over the garden). Today there is a butterfly on almost every bloom. I told my husband that I would like to cut some blooms to bring inside, but I don't want to take them away from the butterflys.  :lol  I often wonder if zinnias came up in debi's flower bed this year (here they often come up from seeds left from the previous year). And of course debi would have taken much better butterfly photos!

FRANKIE what great pictures, love the yellow roses.  I love the butterflies but don't think that Debi's zineas came up voluntary as the winter here is to cold. Love it that Priscilla has company even if he is a scrawcrow he has a wonderful heart and I do believe kind of likes Priscilla.   :lol

PRISSY, I noticed the other trees around the tree with the leaves have lost their leaves,  I wonder if it is a oak tree as they keep their leaves for a long time sometimes thru the winter.  I hope Skip remembers your greenhouse is waiting to get erected.  That would be a good place for your potdolls to hang out for the winter too.

Pepe,

We shall see how long it takes for the Greenhouse to be erected!!!

I wish I had been able to get a leaf from that tree;  then we would know if it were a maple or oak!

Here are some more Fall color pictures from our trip to Iowa.

Prissy - what beautiful trees! We have one maple in our side yard that has beautiful golden leaves in the Fall - the grandchildren love playing in them.

The weather is beautiful here (wish it could last!) I took a few photos in the yard this morning - click to enlarge:

Pepe - as you know, if Lewis sees dirt not being used, he plants something. This is the area of the yard (not even visible from our house) where we lost several large trees to a storm this Spring. The trees were so large that we ended up stacking them and burning them. This caused the grass there to die, so Lewis just planted turnip greens for the winter - he will replant the grass next Spring. (That is Jack in the photo, too).

As usual, I decorated for Halloween and Thanksgiving with scarecrows. We like to put Fall dcorations out here and pretend that we actually have Fall  :lol These pumpkins are fake, because real ones  rot in the heat. As you see from the empty flower bed, we have still not lanscaped from our house remodel last year.

We have our new Thanksgiving flag out:

These are the daisies that granddaughter Laney gave me last Spring. I cut them back after blooming, and they have bloomed again, as you see - I think the blooms are larger for this Fall bloom:

FRANKIE, I love daisies.  They will last all summer here until a killing frost hits.  What a shame that you lost those  big trees, it takes them many years to grow and a few minutes of a storm destroys them, hate to see that happen.  Good for Lewis for making use of the soil though!  :lol

Pepe - Just took a few photos of the winter garden for you - it has been snowing for 3 hours now  :jaw (first time in 6-7 years), but nothing is sticking, at least so far!

Red Cabbage

Lettuce

Carrots

We also have regular cabbage and several beds of turnip greens/turnips (the chickens like those as much as we do - they will get greens all winter along with their chicken feed). All of these plants were grown from seed.

FRANKIE, how wonderful to be able to grow all this in the winter months.  I am sure the snow won't kill the garden as long as  you don't get a killing freeze, in fact if  you get some snow to cover the plants it will insulate and keep them alive.  Thanks so much for the pictures, loved looking at them.  How do you like your new computer?  Is it a lot faster?

 :wave

A while back I posted a photo of a limb that had fallen out of a maple tree. It had ferns growing on it - very common here - especially in the southern part of the state along the Gulf Coast. I tried then to take photos of the tree itself, but it still had leaves on it, and the ferns did not show up well. I was walking outside on New Years' Day and noticed that you could see the fern well - here are some photos: (Click To Enlarge)

FRANKIE, how cool is that.  I can really see it now. I was just at the recipe thread to see what you posted and half of it is gone I can't see it.  There is my post and than a post by JoAnn and the rest of the page is just plain black, very strange.

Pepe - I just went back to the recipe thread to check - I can see what I posted, including the photos, but there is no post from either you or JoAnn - must have been a glitch in the system!

Frankie,

That is really something how the fern is growing in that tree.  I don't think I've seen ferns growing in trees around here.  I will have to be more observant!

Well, this may be my last ever post in the Garden Thread - hope we will have a new one on the new site................

I did not take the time to correct color or to crop photos.

Pepe and Prissy - here is the basket hanger I bought this week at our dollar store - I bought 2 of them, and have no idea what kind of plant I will hang from them:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_GARDENMARCH192010282.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/GARDENMARCH192010282.jpg)

Lewis is busy moving the ferns out of the greenhouse - he has already moved all of the cactus out, too:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_GARDENMARCH192010283.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/GARDENMARCH192010283.jpg)

We moved Prissy's favorite day lilies to the small bed just off the deck - the small yellow ones that bloom all summer:

The tomato tree has already been planted, but the baskets will have to go back inside the greenhouse this weekend when it turns cold again:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_GARDENMARCH192010286.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/GARDENMARCH192010286.jpg)

Pepe - I tried to get a shot of the orange and grapefruit trees for you - the little greenhouse is a mess - everything needs to be trimmed - this is the best I could do. The oranges (satsumas) are good, and I bet we have already picked 30 off of this little tree. If you look carefully, you can see the grapefruit behind the oranges. Lewis has the grapefruit tree tied to the greenhouse, because it is so overloaded with fruit:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/th_GARDENMARCH192010287.jpg) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/fhmmany2/Garden/GARDENMARCH192010287.jpg)

These are the iris that Lewis moved from the front yard - he just put them all along the bank to the pond. Several have buds - we can't wait to see what colors we have. They had gotten too deep in the ground, and haven't bloomed for a long time:

Frankie,

Great to see your pictures.  We will definitely start a new Garden Thread on the new site.  I know you have all of your garden pictures, and I have all of mine, too, in PHotobucket.  I also have some of Pepe's and Mary who used to post.  I believe I have a few of Jan's, too.

If I have a chance, I will go through the thread and save some of Debi's pictures and others, too.

We did go out in the yard a bit today.  Dianthus plants lasted throughout the winter and Skip transplanted one from a pot in the backyard to an empty space around one of our trees in the front yard.  The rosemary plant we bought as a gift but never got to give, did so well through the winter and now has small purple blooms on it.  Skip planted in the pot where the dianthus had been.

Daffodils and jonquils are starting to bloom; slowly!!

He put a lot of irises in the bed around the left side of the pond and they are about a foot and a half tall.  They should be blooming soon.  Our rosebushes are green and look better than they did right after the snow(s).  Skip trimmed some crepe myrtles that are starting to hang over the pool.  We saw some large limbs down in the woods.  They will have to be sawed into smaller pieces and put out for trash and brush pick up.

The vinca (ground cover) in part of the woods is very green and has purple blooms.  Skip doesn't like the vinca, but I do.  It is a good ground cover and helps keep out weeds.

Thursday, March 11, we had our Pond Club Meeting as we do most months at the Botanic Gardens Building in Fort Worth.  Here are pictures from just outside the building.  The first picture has butterfly shapes with flowering plants;  the plants growing from the ground are Kale, dusty miller and pansies, and always they have several variety of plants in huge pots.

I'm not sure that I ever posted the beautiful purple water lily we brought back from the Pond Convention in Houston last summer.  I'm not sure it survived the winter here, but I'm hoping it will come back! :cross

This will probably be the only thread I get to today.  Am taking my nebulizer and trying to breath as I am so congested and throwing up so sick to my stomach.  My stomach started really hurting a couple of days ago when I started on the morphine.  It really helps but have decided I am not able to take it.  That is what I was taking when I went into the hospital at Saginaw last fall.  I think that caused the problems of vomiting.

FRANKIE, love, that hanging basket hook.  I have never, ever seen anything like that before, how unusual!!!!  Yep your Dollar store is sure different and nicer than ours is.  Loved all the pictures  you posted, I bet the iris near the pond will look so pretty.

PRISSY, no I do not remember seeing that pond flower.  That is just breathtakingly beautiful.  Fabulous color.  Sure hope it made it thru the winter but I bet it did .  You don't have a severe winter there although I think you almost had a worse winter than we did this year.
