I'm always uncomfortable watching their trips back home. They seem so... hokey. Parades, confetti, keys to the city.... :hypno

It's hard for me to believe that next week is the last week.  Was this year shorter than previous years or is it just my imagination

Paula's choice for:

Danny Gokey - Dance Little Sister - Terence Trent D'Arby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcUmIRw0N5w)

seems an odd choice but he's singing it well :shrug

Paula chose it because Terence became iconic overnight with the song and the tone of his voice.

Randy - Let the games begin; way to jump it off; sounding good; that was dope for me dude

Kara - the key is in his spot; dancing was too gyrating for me; great singer but will I remember that performance tomorrow I don't know

Paula - thinks Danny did really good; let magic part of your voice carry the song

Simon - just a reminder this is a singing show not that funny little dancing show; although the dancing was a bit desperate; vocally it was very good; didn't like the sax solo; Paula was on the right track with Terence but would have chosen one of his other songs for you

There are 3 performers but 4 judges...so who drew the short straw and doesn't get to pick a song?

Nevermind, Ryan just answered my question. Kara is lumped with Randy's choice.

I agree with Simon--that dancing was desperate.

I hope Danny is voted off tomorrow. I think he does the same thing, week after week.

Wow - The end is near!  :blush

I wasn't impressed with Danny's performance . . . . and I really don't like his voice.  BUT  . . he's still standing!

Kris Allen - Apologize - One Republic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_3XRx8EnuI)

I'm surprised they chose a song that was big for Danny Archuleta last season though I do agree it is a wonderful choice for Kris. Nice that he's playing the piano for this one.

Kara and Randy chose this song because: Big song, big range, song is open for interpretation

Randy - here's what I love about you and this song; you could have a song like this and sell millions of records; it shows us what you could be in the future of the music business

Kara - really competent performance but at this stage you've got to be hitting it out of the park; I wish...I know you can interpret songs in a groundbreaking way...and that's what I wanted for this one

Paula - this song sits in the right place for your voice; there was a bum note that was loud but I'm so proud of you b/c at this stage all three of you are worthy to be in the top two spot

Simon - argues with Paula; I think Kara's comment is a cop out - you can't choose a song for him and then blame him for doing the song; it was a competent performance; you can't blame him you didn't hold up to your responsibilities - if you wanted him to play the guitar you should have told him and come up with an arrangement; and then it just went downhill from there with the judges sparring with one another.

and yet again Adam gets the sweet clean up spot. I wonder if they'll change the order they sing for the next set of songs.

Adam Lambert -  One - U2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFWPeVfWB9o)

Simon chose this song because: one of his faves in the world, had to get permission from U2 specifically for this song; got permission Saturday from Bono that it would be their pleasure for Adam to sing this song

Randy - dude, you are definitely still in the zone; been hot since day one; great vocals; a little off the melody; you are a really talented guy

Kara - you are a strategist; you just proved you can do a song completely different and make it unbelievable; you did your own version

Paula - it was one brilliant song; one superb performance

Simon - may be biased but that was a brilliant song choice; you find a great artist, you found a great song, work out what you want them to do; brilliant performance; if you aren't in the finals next week it will be one of the biggest upsets

If Adam comes in 1st or 2nd, there's no way they'd ever let Clay get near enough to him to tour with him.

Me too. I am sooooo done with Danny.   But I think I read someplace that if Kris is voted off tomorrow, all of his votes will go to Danny.  And likewise, if Danny is voted off tomorrow night, all of his votes will go to Kris.  I have a feeling this is a formidable block of votes.  :para  For those of us who want Adam to win, we had better prepare to vote our fingers off next Tuesday night.

Idol Gives Back has raised over $140 million in the past two years.

Carrie Underwood went to Angola, Africa one of the countries that benefited from funding for bed nets to fight against malaria.

I'm just wondering why they put this segment in the competition portion instead of tomorrow during the results. Oh yeah, because tomorrow they need all that time for the professional artists they'll have on the show. :rolleyes

:headache

:wave REDHEAD,  I agree to a certain point.  I have said several times here on this thread that for me Adam is a performer I would enjoy seeing perform live, but I probably wouldn't buy his CD when it comes out because of the "screamy" factor.

Well now, a very strong, original, artistic performance from Danny.   :clap :clap

Title: Re: AI Season 8: Top 3 - Week of 5-12-09

Danny Gokey - You Are So Beautiful - Joe Cocker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wRCWcQVSJI)

Danny chose this song because: didn't really say, just said he needed to step it up so he went through a bunch of songs from his mentors and this song came to him.

I think it was a "safe" choice and chosen to play on voter emotions about his wife. Nicely sung but boring.

Randy - amazing song, what I love about what you just did is you showed that you're here because you can really, really, really sing; mad vocals

Kara - everything you didn't do in the first performance for me you just did; stunning; amazing

Paula - left all of us breathless; love the structure but allows you to infuse your own thing; changing the chords and using the gospel and r&b part of your voice you nailed it

Simon - loved the song; wouldn't have changed the arrangement; I'd call that a vocal masterclass for you

Title: Re: AI Season 8: Top 3 - Week of 5-12-09
Post by: Moonshot on May 12, 2009, 05:53:48 PM
Kris Allen - Heartless - Kanye West (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWzlD7Lc6w8)

Kris chose this song because: it just came to him

Surprising choice, good for him! Not a brilliant performance but very good.

Randy - this is going to be one of the toughest voting nights; I like that version better than Kanye's version - better than the original; you're in it to win it; love it

Kara - why didn't you do that with Apologize? Bold; fearless; the tone, the pitch, the phrasing; hot

Paula - you are the bravest artist because you sang a song about Simon Cowell; this is what keeps you relevant, to do something different; bravo

Simon - I had written you out of this competition after the first lame song choice; but that however has all changed after that performance

      Redhead,

I agree about Adam he does  seem inclined to get screamy. I could only

                          Must say I like Kris.

And they still ran over time.

How hard is it for these people to time a show??

I can't imagine how boring the Finale would be if it were Danny vs. Kris.   :hypno :hypno :hypno   And I think the judges know that, too.  I think they're afraid of the voters, which is why we got "the warning" from Simon.

Title: Re: AI Season 8: Top 3 - Week of 5-12-09

Adam Lambert - Cryin' - Aerosmith (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2I4mZQmJMU)

Adam chose this song because: it's a classic and he loves Aerosmith

Wow. He definitely changed the song all around. :para Great performance but I'm pretty much over all the screeching. :shrug

Randy - dude; you're one of the best that we've ever had on this stage; most charismatic; you should be a rock star

Kara - how do you hit those notes and still talk the next day; amazing; we'll see you at the finals

Paula - you've set the bar so high; I hope you're collecting frequent flyer miles; as I said from the beginning we'll be seeing you next week and for years after that

Simon - I'm not going to suck up quite as much as the other three; easy to assume you'll sail through to next week; I don't want people to assume you'll be there I want people to vote because it's all about who deserves to be there.

In response to all the slobbering by the judges Adam says Kris and Danny had amazing performances tonight and that it is an honor to be among them.

This is what is setting him apart from all the others. He has a great voice, has been consistent, and doesn't buy into all the hype about himself. He is professional at all times and always acknowledges everyone else involved.

Yes, because he wants him to win.

First, he has to combat the "oh, I'm not gonna vote for Adam because he doesn't need it" people.

Plus, they ran over time at the end, so people who recorded the show might not have gotten to see Adam's last song. So, he could lose some votes that way.

Adam.  anyone else think this is a shot to take Danny out, after he messed it up last time?  Really good, but  I didn't love it as much as I thought I would.  Might have been his little twist to it, or that distracting backup singer.

Who's my favorite?  It varies, but, I'm currently thinking Kris. that opinion is subject to change.

This was exasperating, but exciting.  ADAM is predicted to win  . . . and, I agree, he has made this season very entertaining.  I hope Kris is in the finals.

I wish the judges (all season) had given honest critiques about the contestants. The judges were so self-centered this season  . . . . more than usual. :slick

I'm with you here Sunny, Kris deserves to be in the finale :clap I don't know what I'm feeling about Adam tonight, actually the whole show, the judges goofing around and Paula and Simon acting like children is very distracting :naughty

Gokey admits that being home makes him want to win for the hometown folks. "I did wonder, 'Why do they want me?' But I just want to give love back. I'm not here for the attention."

"I am!" Lambert cuts in. The line cracks the others up, but he's not joking.

"Look," says Lambert, "I didn't really come here to win as much as I came to get exposure and build my career. It's about what the show gives us."

Gokey listens, then says, "I think it's about leaving a mark in people's hearts."

Lambert takes it in, but continues. "I have treated the whole show as a set list, really. To show all my angles. So if I do an album, it'll be a reflection of what I did on the show."

I believe that Michael Orland said that he come to see his friends to show them Parker; Clay would never need Adam.
After all this time I would think that Clay's fans would not believe that article about Clay being told to leave AI. What a piece of tabliod crap. Clay does not need to be a miley Cyrus to have a long lasting and very nice career.

She is Global Ambassador for Keep a Child Alive.

She talks about Noah from Rwanda who dreams of making an album to raise money to help save children with HIV.

Singing "I'm the World's Greatest" is Noah from Rwanda. Noah learned the song in English in one week.

Danny Gokey is called out first. They talk about his trip back to Milwaukee. Danny got to see his friend Jamar who auditioned with him.

to sum up Danny's trip home:

TV appearances, screaming, radio appearances, screaming, special appearances, screaming, seeing Jamar, screaming, meet the Mayor, screaming, throw out pitch at ballgame, screaming

Kris went home to Conway, Arkansas.

He got free cheese dip for life from his favorite restaurant.

a summary of Kris' trip home:

visit to local TV studio, screaming, autographs, screaming, radio station visit, screaming, visit to Riverfest Ampitheater, screaming, visit to parent's place (wow, that's a whole lotta family), aw - his dad cried - that's so sweet!, visit to University, singing, downtown Conway, ticker tape parade, screaming, visit to Simon Park with the Mayor, screaming, singing, more screaming, parents cry some more, more screaming, back to AI

I have a feeling there are a lot of preteen girls out there who are fantasizing about marrying Kris!    He's shorter , more boyish looking and therefore more "attainable" in their eyes.   And lest we forget, the preteen girls are the ones with the fastest fingers when it comes to texting their votes.... I won't be surprised if he's been voted into the finals.

THEA -  :wink   I had hoped that Danny would "peak" and I would go nuts for him and his sound.  I am pleasantly surprised that he got this far.  I am proud that HE did not use the "young widower" card during the competition.  It was mentioned that his young wife had died just weeks prior to his audition for AI.  So, hopefully he didn't get this far on any sympathy element.

I agree!  I think early on he seemed like a "winner", but personally I just haven't seen any growth or "star quality" in his performances.  You mentioned that you had hoped he would "peak".    If he actually did peak, I guess I must have been asleep!   :lol

I am impressed that he had the spiritual and emotional strength to go on after such a traumatic loss in his personal life.  How very, very tragic for such a young man to lose his wife so soon.

Unless there is a "backlash" from the voters because of the huge promotion by Idol and the judges for ADAM, I'm pretty confident that he certainly will be one of the two finalists.  He is a very exciting entertainer and seems so professional.  I feel that Danny and Kris (and many of the others) have had a hard time even coming close to matching his stage knowledge.

Simon says Danny did a great job, Kris' second song last night is what made him a contender tonight and that next week could be a real ding dong.

You can ask all you want but I have no clue what that means. :shrug

Simon says it means it's going to be a really good show. Don't know what translator he's using :scratch

Me too!   :blush  But I probably voted about 100 times for Adam, too!!!

Jordin looks great. She needs to learn stage presence though and how to stand/walk in a miniskirt w/o looking like she has to pee. This song is sort of all over the place  :hypno
I was afraid the camera was going to shoot right up her skirt a couple times!

 :eek :spit
Kinda likin' a Kris/Adam finale, but what the heck is a real ding dong of a show :bduh

Maybe he was referring to the judging.

Sharon - Ryan asked Simon what it meant and he said it meant "good''. sO i guess that is an English slang expression.

WHO EVER thinks that Kris belongs in the finale over Danny needs to stop doing the crack.  Kris should of been voted off weeks ago,  his voice sucks.  Its the "pretty boy" looks that got him this far.  Just another reminder AI is a popularity contest and not a talent contest.

I guess its all a matter of taste Michael!!  Cause I thought Danny was just ok - all of his songs sounded the same to me.  At least Kris changes them up a bit.    But to each his own.  Go Adam!!!!

*puts down crack pipe*

I thought Kris's version of Heartless was fantastic! I kinda thought that alone might get him into the finals because he can change up a song and it makes for an interesting finale with both finalists having that talent.
Danny had a VERY nice voice...but didn't seem to have that knack to change up songs and make em work for him.

*picks crack pipe back up*

Crack don't smoke itself ya know.  :para

I'm worried now that most of Danny's votes might go to Kris as the more conservative contestant.
Gooooo Adam!!! :bouncy :bouncy

I'm very happy that Adam and Kris are in the finals. :bouncy Adam's got the whole package but I think Kris is a great singer and loved how he can make songs like Heartless into his own. I'll be happy if either one of them win. Prefer Adam though. They both can be marketable more then Danny could IMO and no doubt successful.

I agree.   I actually expressed my concern about this very topic a week or so ago.  Although I am a "conservative", I refuse  to allow my core beliefs to influence my choice for who should be the "American Idol".  Adam is a mega-talent, and that should be enough to win him the title.

That being said, I think Kris doesn't have the greatest voice, but he is an artist and not just a singer...unlike Danny, who has a great and unique voice but no "it factor" when he performs.       I think Kris Allen is going to have a very good recording career ahead of him.  Just a hunch.

That being said, Adam will definitely be getting all of my votes next week.  I'm just happy that Kris made it to the runner-up slot so that he has a shot at success.  IMO he deserves it.

I think we all know that, at this point, it doesn't matter who wins the title. :wink

Both of them will get career boosts, and it will be up to them after that. (And I love what Kris said last night about that restaurant giving him free cheese dip for life--"yeah, I've already won!" :lol

Interesting tidbit from mjsblog (http://mjsbigblog.com/american-idol-top-3-wrap-up-and-predictions.htm):

Quote
So NOW I understand Simon Cowell’s schooling of Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson after Kris Allen’s performance of “Apologize” last night.

Sy, one of the AI backup singers, twittered this little interesting tidbit last night:

In short, the backstory to what Simon said to Kara. I was told that all the
judges were given the opp to work w/ each kid…

…they were told the time slot for each kid’s rhrsl. They could come &
advise the contestant on how 2 get the most of their song.

But on rhrsl day, only one judge actually showed up and did that… guess
    which one.”

Simon had Adam, right? So he went to the rehearsal and did what he could to help his boy gets the win. That's cool.

I can see why he criticized Kara. But why didn't he say anything to Randy?

I think Kara is the one who made the comment about it not being original and that is what Simon was jumping on whereas I don't think Randy said anything about it.

Mm, I guess so. (Maybe Randy knew better than to say anything, since he didn't go to the rehearsal.)
