***THEME FOR THE WEEK: ROCK AND ROLL***

Legendary guitarist Slash of Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver fame will be appearing as a mentor. Slash has sold 100 million albums and earned seven Grammy nods for his various projects.  Not sure how he'll do as I've never even heard him speak :shrug

Slash tweets about mentoring the ‘Idols’
Those ‘AI’ kids can sing their a--es off, especially Adam,’ he wrote
   Access Hollywood

updated 7:25 p.m. ET, Mon., May 4, 2009

For weeks, thousands of fans around the country watching Adam Lambert on “American Idol” have been reminded of Axl Rose. And while Rose may not be appearing on the show, his former Guns N’ Roses bandmate, Slash, is, and the guitarist has given Lambert the thumbs up.

“Those ‘AI’ kids can sing their a--es off, especially Adam,” Slash, who is mentoring “Idol’s” contestants on rock week, wrote in a post on his Twitter page over the weekend.

While he didn’t offer any hints about the material the final four — Lambert, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta — will be singing, Slash said he approves of their yet unnamed song choices.

“The contestants from ‘AI’ picked some really cool songs for next week, thank God!” Slash tweeted.

Late last week, Slash confirmed he had been asked to mentor the four finalists, and he accepted the gig on his own terms.

“As you may or may not know, the producers for ‘American Idol’ have asked me to be the mentor for ‘Rock Week’ next week. I was reluctant at (first), but they offered me the freedom to do it however I wanted,” he wrote on his official MySpace page.

Slash, who is known for his guitar playing more than his vocal chords, said he took on the mentor job in a way the show has never seen before.

“The approach I’m taking is different than usual on the show, and I’m going to make this as rock 'n roll an ‘American Idol’ as possible,” he wrote. “Wish me luck.”

Slash, who has worked with many of the rock world’s vocalists, said he was digging what’s been coming out of the final four.

“There are a few singers this year who are really impressive,” he wrote. “It’s the first time any ‘AI’ line-up has really caught my attention.”

***SHOWTIME***

some news...

There was an accident before the dress rehearsal. One of the towers on the stage began to collapse. Therefore there was NO dress rehearsal for any of the contestants. They have not had a complete run through so it should be interesting.

also...the contestants will be performing duets. Not sure how that helps :scratch but okay.

Slash, this week's mentor, worked with the contestants in front of a band and at full volume.

Adam Lambert - Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXwB5rqr1to)

Adam can definitely do "rocker" very well.  Song wasn't a fave but Adam performed well.

Randy - bunch of yo's; this is the Adam I love; nobody's thinking Broadway, you're a rock star; that was hot

Kara -more than a rock star, you're a rock god; you should make a classic & glam rock album

Paula -how can you improve a Zeppelin song? You're a whole lotta perfect

Simon - performance was a little understated..teeaassing; one of my fave performances you've ever done; problem is nobody can top that now

Allison Iraheta - Cry Baby - Janis Joplin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDIaDS9HhMw)

Allison went to Adam's "hairgirl" to get her hair done for this week. I think that's hilarious!
Perfect song choice for Allison this week!

Randy - check it; you can sing your face off; you can sing anything but I didn't love it; not a great vehicle for you

Kara - Janis is the right choice for you but a different song with melody change-ups; you transform when you go on stage so I see your personality;

Paula -you're fearless

Simon -difference in the past 8 weeks; thought you had complete confidence; tried too hard to be like the original so I couldn't hear you; I would have chosen a Queen song for you

Allison's youth and inexperience come out during Simon's comments. She's trying to "show personality" and stand up for herself, but she doesn't quite know how to do it yet.

First duet of the evening:

Danny Gokey and Kris Allen - Renegade - Styx (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJJcR1r7u2A)

Better than expected! Poor Kris, he just isn't a rocker :lol

Randy - really like the harmonies; you guys complimented each other greatly;

Kara - some parts better than others; pitchy moments; together it was united and strong

Paula -powerful; compelling; good job

Simon -Danny you were better than Kris

Still don't understand the reason for introducing duets to the competition :shrug

They've been trying new things all season long. It's ridiculous. Since Nigel Lithgow left, there's been no continuity from one week to the next.

But at least they took out having the judges walk in together. That was laughable.

Unfortunately they both looked a little....fishy...singing a hard rock song.

And I agree that Simon really knew how to take the wind out of Kris' sails.  I hope he can prove Simon wrong right now....

Kris Allen -  Come Together - Beatles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vAqekT-GuA)

Sunny you said something about Kris and uptempo? :lol I'm glad he ditched "Revolution" for this one as it suits him much better.

Randy - I know you aren't a rocker but I appreciate you picking something where you can still be yourself; wasn't blown away by the vocals but I loved what you did on the guitar

Kara - definitely the softer side of rock; this was not a great performance; it was trying too hard; not the best song; there's more than what you delivered tonight

Paula -risky to do Beatles but the artistic delivery; your signature is all over it; your imprint is what makes it compelling; you're an artist on this stage; need a little more energy but you are deserving

Simon -I didn't like it that much; it was like eating ice for lunch it will leave you with nothing to remember afterward; boring song; bit of a jam; didn't believe anything was going to top Adam and I was right

Danny Gokey - Dream On - Aerosmith (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEbMbAuAgmU)

Danny's voice just isn't strong enough or suited to this. I mean come on, it's Steven Tyler! That rock scream just isn't Danny and it didn't sound right. To me it sounded like he just got pushed off a bldg.

Randy - once again I know this isn't your genre; it was all right for me; wasn't perfect but I'll give you A+ for valiant effort; it just isn't what you do

Kara - you added edge to your performance, we told you to do that but you took it a little too far; I like to see growth and risk and I saw that tonight;

Paula -know it was a tricky genre for you; wasn't the right song for you but I'm a huge fan of yours; I give you an A++ for going for it

Simon -agree but the last note was like watching a horror movie; a little over the top; where it worked for Adam not so much for you but I still think you're going to be safe

WTH?!!??!?! Kris gets slammed because he's out of his element but Danny gets "we know it isn't your genre but you get an A+ for effort"  WTH?!?!?!

Title: Re: AI Season 8: Top 4 - Week of 5-5-09
Post by: Sundancer on May 05, 2009, 05:53:19 PM
Probably the main reason for the duets, it has just occurred to me, is that it gives them better control of their time. Instead of having 8 songs, they only have 6.

I really hate how they put Kris down- I thought he was great in the duet and I liked "Come together"

Danny just screamed- did not like it.

Thought Adam just screeched too- didnt watch, I was in the kitchen and just listened, and it just is not comfortable for me.. He takes these awful gaspy breathes that are LOUD and I dont like it.

ALlison I liked

Am tired of Simon being rude and the others arent far behind.

I think that since they are pimping Adam so much that the others just dont stand a chance. How obvious can you get.

YOU ARE THE BEST
BEST PERFORMANCE EVER
ROCK GOD

Give me a flipping break. No sense in watching any more when you know what the outcome is.

The second duet:

Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta - Slow Ride - Foghat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIjZE4kcg_Q)

At least Allison can hold her own with Adam. I don't think Kris or Danny could have done it. Says alot for Allison.

Randy - you guys are our two seasoned rockers; you should do duets on your albums

Kara - when a duet is right you are pushing each other to be better

Paula -perfect blend; perfect marriage; you should really do a duet because you are in sync.

Simon -battle of the duets you win the show tonight; completely different than the other one and Adam you may have given Allison a chance to stay in the competition

With only 4 people in the show?? Don't they have any producers who can tell time?? You start at 60 minutes and work backwards. It's not difficult. :rolleyes

They'll probably just fire DioGuardi after this season and say that having 4 judges was the problem.

Thanks for your hard work tonight Michelle.     :hugg

I think the judges have already made up their mind who is going to be in the finale.  I don't think Kris had a chance this week, even though I thought he did a pretty good job.

It was this era of music that made me turn to country music for over a decade, so I really didn't think I would enjoy it.  Hey, that's my problem -- so I think I'll go listen to Clay sing for a while.

Everybody have a great day tomorrow.

I have no idea what you're referring to, SUNNY!   :giggle  But somehow in Adam I can overlook that.  It's not difficult!!!  :thud :thud

:wave Just a quick, after show post, I know I haven't been around for many of the Idol parties, it's just that I'm not very interested in Idol this year, definitely not as much as I thought I'd be at the beginning of the season, and not since Scott was sent home, but I had to comment about Danny: :para
This is the song that took Michael Johns out of the competition. Wouldn't it be interesting if it did that to Danny, too?
Sunny, that was exactly what I was thinking! Michale was a front runner last season, and as soon as he hit that horrible screeching note at the end, I predicted he'd go home, and I think the same thing is going to happen to Danny! He hasn't been a favorite of mine all season, I like Adam and Kris much more, but you can't ignore how good he's been every week, (so was Michale though!) but I can't imagine what he was thinking picking that song, his voice sounded weak throughout the whole thing and then that horrible horrible scream...I was stunned! :jaw That was so bad and ugly, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes home. :para
Nigel's article was interesting, I thought Adam being in the bottom two was a ploy to get more votes for him, but I thought the same thing when Ruben mysteriously ended up in the bottom, too, :rolleyes it probably is fixed, but since my favorite won last year, I can't complain. :bigsmile

Paula Abdul On Painkiller Addiction: 'I Could Have Killed Myself'
By MAXINE SHEN

Last updated: 11:31 am
May 5, 2009

PAULA Abdul is hitting the stage for a live perform ance on "American Idol" tomorrow night.

She'll leave the judging to others to sing "I'm Just Here for the Music" -- the first single off an album due out in the fall.

Since she's preparing to return to the music scene, the timing seemed right to bare her soul over the drug habit that she's recently kicked.

For the first time, Abdul reveals how hard it was for her to detox from a 12-year-long painkiller addiction.

"I could have killed myself," she tells this month's issue of Ladies' Home Journal.

The withdrawal was "the worst thing. I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain. It was excruciating. But at my very core, I did not like existing the way I had been."

Although Abdul claims that she never filmed an episode of "Idol" while under the influence -- and vehemently denied any illegal drug use in the past -- she did spend at least part of the last decade relying on painkillers and Chinese medicine to quietly combat her injury-induced chronic debilitating pain, she says.

Years of cheerleading, dancing injuries and two crashes -- a 1992 car crash and a 1993 plane crash that required 15 spinal surgeries -- contributed to a diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome in 2005. The illness left her with disabling pain, chattering teeth and shingles-like lesions.

To relieve the symptoms, Abdul wore a patch that delivered a pain medication that she claims was 80 times more potent than morphine. She also sometimes took a muscle relaxer, she said.

But that's all ancient history. Last Thanksgiving, Abdul gave up the meds for good during a stay at Calsbad, Calif.'s La Costa Resort and Spa.

Now, she's in shape and gearing up to to relaunch her music career.

Could they be more obvious...pimp spots coming and going...anyone read how Adam was a paid musician for Randy awhile back...and that Allison won the equivalent of an AI show in/for? Spain?

Not saying these two aren't talented...but I miss the 'best undiscovered talent'...with that, I remain a Danny fan...yeah, tonight wasn't his genre...but at least he picked a song with some melodic quality..I'll come clean...hard rock is not my thing!

Irrespective of my favs...I think Kris is going home... (I did like Adam and Allison's duet...)

Now for a tidbit...true confession is good for the soul...

Quote
This is an American Idol quiz in the Parade Magazine. I've answered it before and Question 4 is "who won season 2 of AI?" There were 4 choices
(Ruben, Clay, Fantasia and (d) impossible to say for sure). Of course, I answered Ruben and it was marked wrong.
They say the correct answeer was (d). See below. I was shocked to see this answer.

Quote:
Correct!

d) It might be impossible to know for sure due to a technical voting problem

While many complained of voting irregularities after the season 2 finale, it wasn't until right before the start of season 5 that Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed that Clay Aiken had led the voting by a significant amount for the entire season and that a technical glitch may have worked in Ruben Studdard's favor.

sorry! As soon as I posted my last comment Moonshot needed to go outside. He ate grass for about 20 minutes to ease a tummyache. We'd still be out there but I made him come back inside.

So I guess I missed Paula's performance.

That was Gwen Stefani back with the band No Doubt singing I'm Just a Girl from the album Tragic Kingdom. I have the album and love it. It's from ages ago. She sounded awful singing it on Idol though. I'm disappointed. This is how it is supposed to sound:

Her number was about how you'd expect. Her voice is synthesized all to heck so it doesn't even sound real. But that's how she always sounds.

Her dancing was okay, but not sharp. She didn't finish the poses--threw most of them away, and she used a lot of repetitive movements. The guys with her were pretty sharp, and there were some fun moments. It's funny--she still does a lot of "cheerleader-type" stuff.

She was lip-synching, but that's to be expected when you dance and sing at the same time.

Hey, the stairs are working tonight! :thumb

True, and I think it would be better for her, being so young, to start out at somewhere less than an American Idol level. Or she could be chewed up, spat out, drug-addicted and broke before she's 25.

I think it's at least as much about the producers as the judges. Of course, Simon Cowell is both. And he's plainly all about the money.

SUNNY and BARB, I agree that it might be a great blessing in disguise for Allison that she isn't going to be the American Idol.  And I think she will probably have a great career in spite of this seeming setback.
Daughtry did alright coming in 4th. :wink

Michelle, and all others contributing -- thanks for all the updates tonight.  Between the phone and my computer I missed more than I saw but all I had to do was read back.

Yup, I guess those two qualities are highly overrated in the world of entertainment.  Sigh....

MICHELLE, thank you so much as always.  And to all of the contributors:  You all do so much to make this AI Discussion Thread an interesting and enjoyable place to be!!!

Whatever happened to Idol? I almost fell off my chair laughing at all those weird looking

creatures. I so miss the old Idol when unknowns became stars.

                  Go Kris!!!
                                                      Good Night All.

Happy for Kris and Adam,
sad for Allison.
Meh for Danny.
I'm with you, Moonshot, would much rather have Allison around than Danny.

 :yeahthat

If anyone missed Paula's performance and wants to hear her new single, I'm Just Here For the Music, you can listen to it on her Idol Bio page:

Paula's Idol Bio Page (http://www.americanidol.com/bio/paula_abdul)

The music player is on the right hand side of the page.

WISH ALLISON THE SAME LUCK AS DAUGHTRY.  HE DID JUST FINE BEING FOURTH.

BET THE FINAL 2 WILL BE DANNY AND ADAM.  TOO BAD.  ALLISON AND ADAM WOULD HAVE BEEN FAR MORE INTERESTING.

I really don't get all the excitement over Danny. He can sing, but he does the same thing every week. :shrug

AGREE, SUNNY.  DANNY BORES ME TO DEATH.  REMINDS ME OF THE SYMPATHY THING.  LIKE JOSH GRACIN.  WE WERE AT WAR AND HE WAS A MARINE.  HE WASN'T THAT GOOD.  NO IDEA HOW THEY COULD MARKET HIM.

Our internet has been off (again!) I was really shocked - I just knew that Allison would be in the Top 3. But I commented to my husband several time in the last weeks that any other year Kris would win just one the cuteness factor alone!  :lol I guess there are more people than I knew who think that, too.

As usual, I have no time to read back, but I had to leave the room when Paula "sang" - Lip-Sync, anyone? She couldn't even do that well - at least they did a good job of keeping her face in the shadows.

I do think Adam is very talented, but other contestants (like Lil) were criticized by the judges for copying the original performers of a song. There was absolutely nothing original in Adam's performance this week, yet the judges (as always) raved about him. And the black leather and looking up at the camera - I'm sure there are people who are thrilled about all of that, but I am unimpressed - I saw the original.   :wink Just go somewhere and download some of Elvis' live performances (not the awful movies he was forced to make!).
