'American Idol' finalists visit Motown Museum
Adam Graham and Susan Whitall / The Detroit News

They came, they saw, and eight of the 10 American Idol finalists sang some Motown songs inside the Motown Historical Museum today, under the watchful eye of Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. and singer/songwriter Smokey Robinson.

The "Idols" arrived in Detroit from Los Angeles via private jet this morning at 4:50 a.m. They arrived in a caravan of four Ford Flex Limited vehicles at the museum, fondly known as Hitsville, just before 10:15 a.m.

Gordy and Robinson motored up in Lincoln Town Cars about 45 minutes later, Gordy all business in a tan glen plaid sports jacket and tan slacks, while Robinson looked more artistic in denim blue Uggs, blue shirt and jeans, with a hammered silver cross around his neck.

The Motown founder and his "best friend" Robinson were to mentor the "Idols" in taped segments that will be aired next Wednesday and Thursday during a special "50 Years of Motown" week on the top-rated Fox TV show.

Around a dozen fans and several dozen journalists greeted the American Idol contestants as they arrived, and more fans gathered as the day went on. First out was tall, strapping Adam Lambert, wearing his usual all-black ensemble, oversized sunglasses and sporting an aqua green streak in his hair. Ypsilanti native Matt Giraud sipped Starbucks from the backseat of the Flex, and when he stepped out of the vehicle, he let a deep breath of Michigan air fill his lungs. "Hometown, alright!" he exclaimed.

Eight of the top 10 "Idols" -- Megan Joy and Michael Sarver did not make the trip due to illness, an "Idol" spokesperson confirmed -- are in town to try out songs they'll be performing on next week's Motown-themed episode in the place where so many of those hits were born: the legendary Studio A.

"It's great coming back home," Gordy said, as media gathered before him as he stepped on to the Motown property. He compared the Motown star-making machine and its inherent competitive nature to that of "Idol," and called "Idol" "probably the greatest platform in the history of the music business."

Gordy said he wasn't going to coach the kids through their songs so much as focus on them as people. He said he would prepare them for longevity in the business, and stress the importance of personal happiness in the face of success.

"I've reached my pot of gold, so to speak," Gordy said. "After (success) is when you want to be truly happy. And you can only be truly happy if you're proud of yourself."

This is not Robinson's first tango with "American Idol"; he acted as a guest judge during the show's second season and performed during the season finale of the show's sixth season.

The eight "Idol" finalists stopped and posed for several pictures in front of the museum before entering the building. Anoop Desai dressed the part, wearing a black Motown hooded sweatshirt. Lil Rounds -- who actually is rather "lil" in person --sported an Anita Baker-like, short, flirty 'do, and was bundled up in a black coat and big shades.

Scott MacIntyre, who is vision-impaired, carried a walking cane with him and was helped up the walkway to the building by an assistant. He waved to onlookers, smiling broadly.

When asked if he was going to win it all on "Idol" this year, Giraud -- sporting a cool pair of designer shades -- smiled, drawling, "We gon' try. But it's good to be home, and that's all I'm thinking about right now."

When asked what he was going to sing next week, Giraud laughed and said, "Come on, you know I can't tell you that." But he didn't hesitate when asked who his favorite Motown act is. "Jackson Five," he said. (Giraud sang the Robinson-penned Jackson Five hit "Who's Lovin' You" during "Idol's" Wild Card round, which ended up earning him a place as one of the finalists.)

Lambert said his favorite Motown act was Marvin Gaye. Frontrunner Danny Gokey said, "There's too many to choose," but added, "The Temptations have got to be one of them."

The crisp Detroit weather proved to be a bit of a shock for contestant Allison Iraheta, who announced, "It is cold!" to anyone within earshot while standing on the front porch of the Motown Museum.

The Roostertail's Tom Schoenith catered the shoot, and showed up in the 11 o' clock hour with assistants bearing trays of shrimp, wrapped sandwiches, salads, and buckets of fruit and vegetables.

At least an hour after Robinson and Gordy had departed, the "Idols" finally left Hitsville, granting autographs to a line of ecstatic fans kept behind a wooden barrier.

The Idols were all smiles about their sessions with the Motown veterans, and seemed tickled to sign autographs and answer questions. Asked what he did inside, Giraud said "Learned how to sing right!" Did Smokey show him how? "I'm hoping!" the Kalamazoo pianist replied.

Iraheta said Robinson gave her a tour of the Motown museum. "I'll have my one-on-one with him next week," she related.

Lambert said Gordy advised him of the importance of individuality, of being yourself. "I really picked up on that!" Lambert said with a grin. "The key for us all is to breathe, to relax and realize just how fortunate we all are."

The Idol Eight were then chauffeured back to their hotel just after 3 p.m.

The footage taped today will air during Wednesday's episode of "Idol," and Robinson is scheduled to perform during Thursday's elimination episode, Fox announced this morning.

Gordy said the "Idols" have a leg up on their peers, unlike Motown when it started 50 years ago.

"We started from zero; they're starting from a mountaintop," he said.

They return to LA and Smokey mentors them.

In the crappy first spot is:

Matt Giraud - Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye

He didn't perform it badly (wasn't great either)...but there's something about an Idol singing about "getting it on"...creepy  :para

Randy - set this off; those runs you did at the end, that falsetto, you worked it out

Kara - lot of girls out there going 'yeah'; liked that you started at the piano then got up and did your thing; solid performance

Paula -glad you are comfortable somethingsomething; sexy cool vibe; most people overdo riffing, yours are tasteful, spot on; you're respectful of the melody; like wearing a pair of worn in jeans

Simon - cool performance; voice absolutely suits that kind of song; you are one of the front runners in this competition

 :wave Hello Idol Watchers!

I just got here.   Matt did a good job.  He has talent.  He still is not one of my favorites.

YIPES -  The introductions of the judges and Ryan . . way toooooo much!  :slick

I think Matt sang that song very well. But as for being a "frontrunner"? I don't know about that. I don't get any personality from him.

Kris Allen - How Sweet It Is - Marvin Gaye (and later James Taylor)

he's such a cutie; not the best singer in the bunch but not the worst and totally adorable!  :blush

Randy - once again, you're being consistent; hitting your zone; it's all good right now baby

Kara - know what I love about that performance; you didn't do James Taylor, you didn't do Marvin Gaye...you did Kris; it's about artistry and setting yourself apart and you did everything right on that performance

Paula - nice seeing you come into your own; picked a great song; infectious personality; note at the end was brilliant; really proud of you, growing every week

Simon - you're having a good competition right now; smart that you did your own version of the song; need to start believing in yourself, you don't have the swagger yet; if you're going to be a star you've got to be conceited

:wave  Just coming in.  Wanted to clean up the kitchen before settling down.

Michael....strong performance

Chris...He's growing on me.  I like his voice.  I like his sweetness and his genuineness (is that a word?).

Frankly, I'm glad they put Michael and Chris next to each other so we could compare the two "dark horses".

And WISC BARB, I agree that the introduction of the judges was definitely OTT.  Overkill/nauseating/unnecessary also come to mind.

Scott MacIntyre - You Can't Hurry Love - Diana Ross

WTH? He gets backup singers at the piano? 'sup widdat?

I liked Scott in the auditions but now....boooring. Nice guy but time to go

Randy - agreeing with Simon; very hotel performance; you've got to take some risks; you're a better singer than that; you can challenge bigger songs; very average

Kara - disagree on the song; you brought some tempo which I've wanted to see from you; you did take liberties with the melody and when you do that with this type of song you've got to nail it;

Paula - think you pleased both Simon and I; did something different having the singers at the piano; liked the chord changes at the beginning; when you feel it the audience feels it too

Simon - line in the song "how much more can you take"; wasn't a great version of the song; honky tonk piano; backup singers were a mess with you; completely wrong song for you; cheap; you're better than that as an artist; week after week you are choosing the wrong song; it's about a stand alone performance as an artist and that wasn't it

Paula and Simon get into as usual. Paula gives Simon some crayons and a coloring book since he's acting like a child.

BARB, I'm also very surprised and disappointed by the judges critique of Scott.  I'll stand by my belief that this was a very entertaining and solid performance....and even a bit exciting.  I just have a feeling Simon has his "agenda" going this evening and is determined that Scott should be the next one to go.  After 8 years of watching their antics on AI, I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out the judge's motives as reflected in their comments.

Hi WILSON BARB!!!!  Good to see you this evening!  And I agree that tonight's show so far is much more entertaining~

Megan Joy Corkrey - For Once In My Life - Stevie Wonder

Oh. my. god. She's better? She sounds totally stopped up and all over the place. :blink Her voice is definitely unique  :para Back half of that song was much better than the front half. She's still completely awkward with her body. I noticed they keep the camera tight on her face or on the the crowd

Randy - got mad love for you; dress is cute; that song was a train wreck; that song, that fast was totally wrong for you so you can get your bluesy thing; didn't feel that

Kara - it's true; "My Guy" would have been much better; a slower tempo; this was all over the place; the phrasing was weird; the song took you over, it was dominating you

Paula - your stunning beauty takes my breath away, the camera loves you but I'm going to have to agree this was not the right song for you; very confusing

Simon - oh dear; the good news is you look good; the bad news is it was horrible; whoever is advising you I would fire; you are getting horrible advice; the arrangement was horrible and the vocals were all over the place; I think you could be in trouble

Anoop Desai - Ooh Baby, Baby - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles

He has a nice quality to his voice. Nice song but it's so sloooow  :sleep

Randy - serious Anoop; next week give us some energy; nice to hear you croon and swoon but turn it up next week, get the party on

Kara - one of the most beautiful songs ever written, one of the hardest to sing b/c it goes from your chest to your head; a few points where you didn't pull it off but overall you did a great job; you're showing people you can sing; I want you to push it more and be more creative changing up melodies

Paula - you have a new-found confidence; your phrasing, delivery and falsetto is not only spot on but it's sweet; good job

Simon - great vocal; you looked as if you were half asleep; it's one thing to be serious it's another to be boring; sounded like a musical; it's about showmanship; you've had 2 good weeks though

Michael Sarver - Ain't Too Proud To Beg - The Temptations

Michael does nothing for me. Nice guy but he may go now. ~waves hand dismissively~

Randy -song was too big for you; you aren't an R & B kind of dude; made it corny by trying to do too much with it

Kara - it's not about singing it's about artistry; we're looking for an artist to interpret a song and make it their own; we need you to bring it; what can you do that's different for that song that makes us take notice

Paula - oh boy; this was a tough performance; kind of felt Las Vegas lounge-y for me the way you were working the mic; don't feel - you need to dominate that song; some of those notes you were trying to slide up you weren't always reaching

Simon - no idea what Paula said; it was actually I couldn't wait for it to end; you were screaming and shouting the song; you are taking part in this competition but no chance of winning with that vocal; it's a reality; no point hoping it's good enough; in the real world it really isn't; forget dominating, choose the right song for you; it was below par

Okay, so Simon told Michael, "You're in a competition you have no chance of winning.... Take this criticism as it was meant--to help you."

How is telling him he can't win supposed to help him? :hypno

Hi everyone

Been reading your comments and I agree with most of them. I think Megan was  bad and so was Michael. I , for some reason, don't care for Scott either. Just my opinion.

Love listening to all your comments.

Lil Rounds - Heat Wave - Martha & the Vandellas

Lil has class. The arrangement is a little funky. She takes it down on ...heat wave... and it sounds weird.

Randy -this song for me for you...you got mad crazy vocals...by the end of the song it was great, the front part was not good for me; it wasn't the right kind of song for you; it sounded like you were rushing it because you have a big voice; not the best performance

Kara - look great; you were the diva everyone was waiting to hear; this was your week; if you don't nail this week I dunno; not the right song; we all know Lil can sing; you have this voice, if you had a melody that breathed more you could have given it more; it was screaming more; I don't want to hear you screaming, you're an effortless singer

Paula - I disagree; you look unbelievable with the throwback to Motown; what you did vocally was fresh

Simon - you did an authentic tribute to the sound of Motown; I wouldn't have chosen that song for you though; it was too fast; you could have chosen "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" you could have had a moment; you are one of the best singers we've got in this competition; I'm dying for you to do what you did a few weeks ago when you blew everyone away; you can't do it with a song like that

Adam Lambert - Tracks of My Tears - Smokey Robinson

Wow. Definitely slowed things down a bit from his usual! Nice suit too. And a standing O from Smokey himself who wrote the song!

Randy -from day one when I saw you, this guy has the range; you're not only just a cool indie rocker; you sang so tenderly using your falsetto and everything that's in your arsenal

Kara - one of the best performances of the night.

Paula -someone comes along who is completely in their own league; you look very handsome and classy; you give an element of surprise but its just an extension of who you are as an artist

Simon - THE best performance of the night; summed up everything we've been saying about originality, song choice, etc; you tonight have emerged as a star; congratulations

Danny Gokey - Get Ready - The Temptations

he shouldn't try to dance  :para The vocals were pretty good though. The interaction with the backups is different and new.

Randy - reminds me of Levi Stubbs; great performance, not your best but I loved the energy and feeling

Kara - not great but a good performance

Paula -undeniable, identifiable, first class performance every week

Simon - we know you're a good singer but I thought that was clumsy and amateurish

Allison Iraheta - Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - Temptations

It's easy to forget she's only 16. I think she missed a few words in there somewhere.

Randy -you might be 16 but you're one of the dopest singers this season

Kara - America you gotta vote for her; you sing like you been singing for 400 years, that is from God you can't teach that

Paula - look fantastic; kept your rocker edge; awesome; belong in the competition

Simon - you are a survivor; terrible week last week; very difficult song to do and one of your best performances

Adam was beyond spectacular last night.  I could not believe that he had his hair combed back and a suit on, I let out a scream when I saw him.  WOW what a hunk he is!!  His performance was very emotional for me, he almost brought me to tears.  Have to be honest but Elvis came to mind as I watched him perform.  Now am wondering who will show up next week!!!!!!!!   :lol  Also thought Allison was fantastic last night, what a dynamo.  For only 16 years old she is already a seasoned performer.  I am still in shock that she was in the bottom two last week.  Love Danny, but he needs to do something with his appearance.  Loose the glasses and dress better Danny.  Thought he looked very unkept and sloppy last night.  My husband is a Matt fan.

Scott McIntyre

Again, dialidol picked 2 of them. (They didn't put Matt in the bottom 3.)

Nope. I think the powers that be threw him in for drama.

Oh for pete's sake. I just want to know who's voted off. I don't want to watch a concert with all these people!

Yes, I've seen where Vote for the Worst "takes credit" for Sanjaya. (Not sure that's something I'd brag about.) I honestly don't know how much, if any, influence they have in the weekly results. I mean, if 30 million votes are cast, what percentage are going to the "worst" performer? :shrug

For me, ole Stevie Wonder is the only reason (other than to watch the results) to watch the show.

Now that 4 stars have performed on the results show, I wonder if they'll have any time left for whoever got booted to sing?

And the person "singing for survival" tonight is...

Michael Sarver

I will be muting. I couldn't stand his performance last night, why would I want to listen to it again :rolleyes

And no, the judges won't be saving him.

IMO Michael is not the worst contestant left on stage

Did Paula want him to leave? She wouldn't say. Weird for her not to jump in with encouragement for someone.

I'd trade Megan and Scott both to get Alexis back.

Well, they certainly milked that for all it was worth.  I think the judges "discussed" so long they didn't have time to say what the theme will be next week -- or did I miss it.

I'll be back next week to see what is going on -- hope to see all of you here.

Thanks again, Michelle.

Oh well,  at least we got to watch Stevie Wonder tonight.  That was very entertaining.

On to Grey's Anatomy.  I'm prepared to get depressed.  Rough plot.
