Lunch time check in! It's very quiet here today. As I've been working, I popped an old DVD of  2003 Clay TV shows in - just watched the "behind the scenes" show about the American Idol 2 Tour. I loved the part where the Idols were sitting around the breakfast table reading the reviews from their show - some of the reviews were just awful, and  some were downright mean (lots of personal attacks). My favorite part is where they all raised their glasses of orange juice, and Clay made a toast "Here's To Not Caring!" I think Clay has kept that same attitude - don't sweat the small stuff!

Where do you find the sales numbers for Clay?  I tried to find them on Billboard.com but did not see his album listed at all.

By the way, I just got the album in the mail yesterday and I just LOVE it!!!!! It is beyond my expectations and his voice is spectacular.  His range and control are wonderful.  What a very pleasant surprise this new album is.  Makes me happy!

My daughter is a huge Groban fan, and he is rarely heard on the radio in N.E. Wisconsin. He falls into the AC category and has a more mature fan base than the "hot" stars.

I think he's just trying to give credit to Jaymes and the others who helped him be able to make this album? That is has been a team effort? Then again heck what do I know :bduh 

Clay seems to be the type who would bend over backwards to be politically correct, but I do agree it gets irritating after a while.   I also get tired of the Presidential candidates referring to themselves as "we".  We are not electing a Board of Trustees to run our country

Just once I'd like to read a review that doesn't mention the word Claymate. I'm a 50 year old guy who played in rock bands to get through college and I have no problem saying I like Clay Aiken. And Elvis Costello and Wilco and Kurt Elling. And a whole mess of different singers and songwriters. I think this album just might appeal to a lot of people who haven't a clue about Claymates or adult contemporary music or never owned a Barry Manilow album. Falling sounds like Invisible? Because it has a small section of techno sound? And that's bad? Not original? Yeah, because that top 40 crap doesn't all sound the same and I can't tell one female over-processed voice from another. He doesn't cater to the pop MTV crowd - ok. That's bad? Cause that music is GOOD? And adult contemporary is bad? It's the only place I can hear Van Morrison's new album and I'll take that over that Keep Bleeding song any day. It's no wonder I can't turn on the radio. What a pity you can't just review the album without the condescension to an audience who isn't a Claymate and still thinks Clay Aiken put out a good album. You don't have to like it but open yourself up to the possibility that there are people other than this monolithic Claymate world "critics" seem to be obsessed with.

All critics need to identify themselves more clearly because as a music major in my senior year I am hearing some very fine and complex material in this offering from Aiken. I have really disliked his other stuff though I loved his vocal range and I thought he killed in Spamalot. I think you got this one wrong because I am giving it a few listens on AOL and I really am liking it. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars

You can tell from reviews which critics actually listened to the songs and which didn't. This CD sounds NOTHING like his other ones. There are some extremely different sounds on here -- very eclectic. If any other name was on the cover as being the singer, it would be getting great responses for being a good mix of songs and sounds. Saying nothing is worth listening to if you aren't a diehard fan is stupid.

Critics supposedly write (but not really) because they DON'T have the talent to be the singer themselves. Jealous much? But then anyone who TRULY BUYS or does NOT BUY a CD based on what some nobody says about a CD is pretty lame. Most people have their own brains and can use them. Shame critics can't -- and since the reviews are literally the exact same words in many cases, there is NO way they can claim their review is original. More like lazy and taken from whoever gets the review up first. Gosh people, work for your salary. Actually listen and think enough to write for yourself. I'll choose what to buy for myself.

Is it OK to be a guy in college who plays football & likes this CD? Coz I am. "Weight of the World" which sounds kind of like a U2 song, "Falling" which sounds NOTHING like "Invisible" & "Ashes" which just sounds freakin' good, are my picks to download.

Toni, of course no one has to love the album to give it a fair review. Nor hate it to show their sophisticated musical tastes. What some of us are confused about is why Claymates enter into your analysis of music in the first place. And for me, I'm confused by words like unmemorable. Do people produce albums full of memorable cuts? All 12 of them? Lover All Alone is haunting in it's simplicity - at least to me. That makes it memorable. Is it groundbreaking? No. But short of Dylan going electric or the Beatles adding full orchestras to their pop music - I haven't heard much that's truly memorable. What I have heard is plenty of good music coming from a variety of different singers/musicians. Everything I Don't Need starts off great but becomes uninspiring? It's supposed to be inspiring? I thought it was just supposed to be funky and fun. And it is. At least to me.

And most confusing to me is how this album only appeals to Claymates but those looking for more originality and substance should look elsewhere. I don't know how high you set the bar - but my guess is you can count on your hand the number of recent cds that are full of "originality and substance". I found much that was original in this album. As for substance? I'm off to read a book.

Well you may have listened to it several times and you are allowed your opinion. But to talk about trite lyrics and then consider things that get raves and win grammies -- talking about sidewalks and fingers turning green and my umbrella brella brella etc -- that is NOT trite. Give me a break. There is very LITTLE good music around and if you expect real meaning to need to look somewhere other than top 40 or AC music -- like maybe a college campus lecture instead.

Talking about no edge -- whatever. The MUSIC does have edges to it - it is NOT bland and normal. But because he doesn't sing about sex, drugs, illegal activities or destroying someone's property it doesn't have edge -- OK. Whatever. There is plenty of meaning in those songs for people who want a message. As Long As We're Here is full of meaning, especially considering this song really reached out to him while he was on a trip as a Unicef Ambassador working for children. Maybe that is the problem -- he sees a whole different LIFE than people who want to be entertained with EDGE, instead of meaning.

Again opinions are great but for me, if anyone can't find some meaning in at least some of these songs, with their diversity, then I just feel sorry for them and what their life must be based on. He talks about love, hurt, anger, need, praise of others, including God -- surely something is there has meaning.

Bottom line is that the critics have a narrow view of what they expected and Clay isn't cooperating. How dare he do funk, R&B, gospel or rock!

There is an audience for his style and his amazing versatility. Accept that you aren't cool enough to get him, without denigrating him for daring to make an ecclectic CD with beautiful songs from his heart.

You'll love Ashlee Simpson's new effort. It's completely soulless and references using your other head often enough to satisfy the boys boys boys

OK, I need to rant here.  I love Jimmy Kimmel, but that whole piece with the Clay bust was just wrong.  I can only imagine how embarrassed Clay must have been watching those old ladies kiss and rub this piece of "art".  I was embarrassed for him.  It was difficult to watch.  And, once again, it makes his fans look like fools.  What's wrong with these women?  I know there's some classy ladies in this fandom (after all, we all are), but where are they during these appearences?  They always focus on the OTT nut cases.  Let's see, we have Cookie with her Claymobile who can't answer one question right.  Then there's the SwaySisters on QVC.  And now we have the Gropping Grandma's.  I'm sure there's more, but I can't think straight right now.

I am very proud of Clay in the way he handled the interview.

Courtney the audience chick gathered up most of the people in front of the stage and they had a little pow-wow. We wondered what they were cooking up, I never recall that happening before. Then most of them left for the restroom. Shortly thereafter, Courtney came to our section and said something to us.

She told us "This is not the Clay Aiken Show" and that we needed to to be energetic for everyone. It's the Jimmy Kimmel Show, and without Jimmy Kimmel there would be no Clay Aiken appearance. This wasn't in a nice tone of "be a good audience" like usual, we were being reprimanded.

It’s not his fault that 1iota (and the one time I was there, I found Miss Courtney to be quite full of herself) chose to give people a lecture. You just know it had to do with MeCrest and even with that, his insecurity oozed out of him.
 

As for where the classy ladies are...they're the ones standing off to the side not agreeing to be a part of the foolishness.

I have, however, toyed with the idea of posting about what the term Claymates has come to connote to many people, and how not all fans are ready and willing to act like fools at the drop of a hat.

Please do, Sunny.  It needs to be said, and hopefully Clay himself will have a chance to read it and maybe reconsider his "public" attitude towards his loyal fans.    He also needs to know how uncomfortable so many of us are with being lumped together in the "Claymate" category...."Claymate" does NOT  have a positive connotation in the non-Clayfan world.

Darn, three posts earlier and I could have avoided wasting a perfectly good place on the smut page. Sorry.

Sometimes I feel like “the only kangaroo among the beauty” [TM Emily Dickinson] --- I laugh, thinking that I am and have always been a contrary misfit. It keeps my life interesting.

Personally, I had a lot of fun at Jimmy Kimmel yesterday. It was only the third Clay TV taping I have ever attended. For some reason, even though I have been in L.A. for probably 80% of Clay’s television appearances, mostly I’ll just watch him on the tube, rather than spend a day waiting in line. I had such a wonderful time at Clay’s memorable appearance promoting ATDW, though, that Kimmel became the one show on my “always go when you can” list. All the same, this was the first time I’ve been back since September 2006.

I decided to take the subway, arriving at Hollywood and Highland just after 8 AM. There were probably ten people there already. I know very few other fans in RL, but I recognized the woman I ended up right next to in line from her winner’s photo at the Raleigh BAF auction. Hey, it’s SmartyPantsSuz! She’s such a kick, a fun person. I also met the glamorous gareem, the funny clight, delightful lovethatguy and several others from CV, the Broads and other boards, including some lurkers I had a good time talking to throughout the day. Later I saw CCF, ncgurrl, polyvinyl, lala, ellenpoppy, Permaswooned, recap goddess poshpenny and other great CHers I have met through the years. I also met the warm and funny beagle2 and the gorgeous flyinpenguin --- I was thrilled to see them end up with a seat in the first row, after they traveled all the way from Seattle.

Right now someone is probably thinking, “frickin’ frackin’ berkeley didn’t mention me!” That’s one reason I don’t usually list who I see, because I forget someone’s name every.single.time. and then I feel stoopid. Everyone I talked to helped a long, hot day go by quickly, so thanks!

Being in the shade most of the day, right by the entrance to the theater, I saw and heard a lot that I would have missed had I been farther back in line. More on that later.

It’s funny how someone in the line is always in touch with someone on the boards. The good news about Clay, Hannah and “Spamalot” being nominated for the Broadway.com Audience Awards went through the line, as did the bad news of the cancellation of Clay’s appearance on Craig Ferguson’s show. I hadn’t planned to do line reports, but I called GBB for confirmation of the nominations, since there was some confusion over the categories. It was good to see the work of this fantastic cast being acknowledged in these nominations and I found myself hoping that Hannah, Clay and everyone at “Spamalot” sees these nods as a bon voyage gift from so many who were royally entertained over the past four months.

I sent a text to Corabeth asking if she knew any details about what happened with Ferguson --- not being able to read the board, I didn’t know if the reason had already been explained. My first thought was confirmed by her reply, as posted here: late night protocol can be a tricky thing. Visits have to be spaced, it’s hard to navigate bookings on competing shows, and every production wants a first or an exclusive.

Craig Ferguson can be brilliantly funny, perceptive and profound, but he’s disappointed me in his tedious sniping at Clay. He can do better. (I’m also aware that a great Ferguson appearance could be the road back to a Letterman booking, since Dave’s Worldwide Pants production company also produces Craig’s show.) I looked forward to them meeting, and I do hope it happens in the future, because Clay often changes minds when he gets a chance to meet someone in person. I don’t expect his name to ever be removed from the late night monologue list, but it’s not like there isn’t plenty of humor to be found in Clay without having to stoop to stereotypes that don’t even come close to fitting the man in the first place.

C’est la vie. I don’t dwell in disappointment, which for me didn’t rise about the level of “slight” anyway.

No information came from the show until mid-afternoon. This time and last, though they seemed fine as a whole, I found a few of the staff people (from JKL or 1iota, I don’t know) to be… terse. (From what I saw on my two visits to the show, the on-camera folks, including Uncle Frank, Guillermo, Veatrice and Cousin Sal, are warm and friendly, as are the uniformed security guards, who I observed to be very polite and efficient.) I don’t do live-to-tape, but I’ve worked in feature film, series television, commercials and documentaries, and I am often the point of contact with the general public. In a very demanding and intense job, it makes me happy that I am often called the “nice A.D.” (assistant director) simply because I do my job efficiently while still treating people as I would wish to be treated, even on the rare occasions when they don’t particularly deserve patience or courtesy. I wish it was always that way in “Hollywood” --- and everywhere.

I don’t believe there is a valid reason to be rude to the people who help make shows a success, whether they work on it or are part of the audience. Staff Skit Guy was very cordial when he came up and asked me if I was a Clay Aiken fan --- I liked the use of that term, so I cheerfully said “Yes.” Then he asked me if I wanted to part of a skit where I would talk to, kiss and fondle (his words) the clay Clay bust, and my “Hell, no!” reply was said with a smile and a laugh, as if reacting to the dumbest of jokes. I wasn’t angry at all, but I thought it was utterly absurd, a cliché that has been played out ad infinitum.

From my place in the line less than ten feet away, I watched as a diverse group of women and a couple of men lined up to take part in the skit. (Some went up and said “Hi, Clay, great album” or similar words of greeting or praise, minus the kisses and hugs, but they didn’t show up on air.) Each person was specifically directed to be more and more OTT, including doing additional takes to get bigger reactions. I walked away to do another phone update, so I missed some of the things reported, but I remarked to the people around me, “This just strikes me as such boring TV.”

It is what it is--- hey, maybe the participants thought it would be fun for their friends and family to see them in a comedy bit on TV. My main complaint about the bust segment is that it seemed so ordinary, so typical, just boring television. My NJU family watching last night didn’t laugh or cringe or comment. They didn’t react at all --- hardly a positive reaction to a comedy skit.

Late night TV is built on goofy skits, some funny as hell, some dull as dishwater. For five years, Jimmy Kimmel has tweaked the “Claymates,” but I will give him credit: he might poke the ridiculous, but he usually does so with affection and even a little bit of awe. Last night, some of his jokes fell a bit flat, some soared, some got decent laughs. I’m not going to remember this skit a week from now, though I still laugh when I remember, “I shaved my leg for you!” The show, on the whole, didn’t touch the great Climmel of September 2006, but it was still a fun evening for me.

Guillermo’s lemonade skit made me laugh. His character has a sweet innocence about him, and his delight at making an impossible $450 from the $8 glasses of lemonade he sold to fans waiting in line played well. This type of absurd humor is Jimmy Kimmel Live at its best, and no audience members were hurt in the making of it.

Being close to the entrance also afforded me with the muffled glory of the sound check. I smiled when I heard "On My Way Here" and almost cheered when I heard “Ashes”. I didn’t hear “Falling,” though a few people around me said they did: when the doors were closed, most of what came through was bass and the power of some of Clay’s belted notes. Every time a staff member opened the door, we could hear Clay and the band loud and clear, and at several points he could be seen on the monitors inside, though mostly obscured by the reflections on the glass. I thought I saw Mary inside, but I couldn’t be sure --- the slim, tall brunette was too far away.

It became a running joke, as staff and security went in and out, for someone in line to ask if the staffer had left something inside, then make a comment about opening the door. The chanting someone reported during a phone call came about when one exiting staff member held the door open for a few seconds while talking to someone behind him, giving us the longest moment of clear voice and rocking band we’d hear until we got inside. The Guy Who Held the Door was wearing a shirt that said “Hurley,” so many started to chant the name as they cheered for him. He laughed, shook his head and went on his way.

Anyway, it was great to get a glimpse of Clay’s sound check (mainly, I saw his hair and most of his face, so I didn’t know what he was wearing) and to hear some tantalizing bits of his songs. I knew that "On My Way Here" would be broadcast, but probably less than half a minute of the second song would be aired. With no tour yet announced, I was happy to be seeing Clay perform a couple of new songs live. (I wish I could upload my memories of “Ashes” for everyone who wasn’t there to see.)

I was surprised that the nine hours went by quickly. It was good to get inside the lobby where it was cool, watch some Kimmel highlights on the monitors and finally be allowed inside the theater. I was sent over to a really great seat, directly in the middle of the center riser about three rows up, so I had a perfect view of what was happening on stage without cameras or booms obscuring my view.

As I sat waiting for the show to begin, I saw the audience coordinator speaking with a group in the front of the theater, then to people in the riser section to my left. She said nothing to the middle or right sections that I heard or noticed, so my first thought was that they would be the people called first to exit for the lobby concert. (That area is so small that I doubted a third of the audience could fit in there, so I thought my chances of seeing Clay perform rather than just hearing the songs would be slight.) I am glad I didn’t know what was actually going on, because I don’t enjoy having my calm disturbed. I am sorry to hear that anyone would think a crowd that has been a friendly and enthusiastic audience for Clay, Jimmy and all of the guests who have been on when Clay has appeared would require a lecture on proper audience behavior.

Cleto and the Cletones did a bit of rocking the house, and Uncle Frank Guillermo, and Veatrice were introduced.

After an extended and unnecessary warm-up and some audience bits (including one guy with a fine voice who sang “Fly Me to the Moon”), there was an announcement that the first segment would be a pretaping for next Tuesday’s show, then the regular Friday show would begin. Jimmy came out, and I wondered what he’d cooked up for the evening.

I watch “Lost” and was happy that Matthew Fox was there, even though I knew he wouldn’t scoop the finale and I don’t have much interest in “Speed Racer.” He got a loud, warm welcome, and as he came out I thought he was taller and better looking in person than he appears on TV. The interview was like a casual conversation, with Matthew coming across as a nice guy and Jimmy working some of his stories of the Fox family living in Hawaii for a few gentle laughs. Not a spectacular segment, but Matthew seems like the kind of guy I’d enjoy talking to while working on a film set.

The stage was reset for the Friday show and Jimmy came back out to tumultuous applause. He launched into his monologue (some great bits, some duds) and then there were a variety of his regular segments. I like Jimmy enough to watch him a couple of times a week: he was in good but not great form. I wondered if the cross country end-of-the-week trip was slowing him a tad, but I didn’t stint in giving him the love.

Ryan Seacrest was up next. Back in 2004, I went to Hollywood and Highland to see Clay perform in the courtyard for Ryan’s old show, just before the IT. I liked Ryan back then: from the groan-worthy mess that was his first AI season co-hosting gig, to his often witty, polished and sympathetic solo spot the next year, he had really started to shine. I had recently moved back to L.A. and hadn’t selected a radio station to listen to, so I tuned into his afternoon radio show on Star FM. He was quick and funny, always interesting, self-deprecating in a humorous way.

Oddly, as his star has ascended, to me he has shone less and less. He was extremely fidgety, and nothing he said seemed to catch the audience’s attention. He looked tired and considerably older than 32 or 33, and the tabloid-style shows he is producing did not sound interesting in the least. I know how to be a good audience member, so I applauded and laughed at the right times, but there wasn’t any real emotion behind it. I used to think that Ryan would develop into one of the best television and radio personalities around, but I now feel nothing about him other than to note that he is no longer of any interest to me.

When Clay walked out, I thought he looked great. I like his floppy blond hair, which to me looks far more natural with his cloud-pale complexion than some of the darker hues, dramatic and striking though they might be. He’s gotten pretty lean again, and in the studio his soft sage green sweater looked like money. The crisp white shirt paired with a gold tie were au courant, and the slim dark jeans and boots were the perfect finish to the ensemble.

Even better to me were his smile and his poise, even when he’s being funny and telling outrageous stories. His actions and reactions make for good, sometimes even great, TV. He was in terrific last night.

I’m going to take this a bit out of order.

I actually loved Jimmy presenting Clay with the bust as a gift. That’s a nice play on the joke gift exchange that has gone on between Jimmy and Clay for nearly five years, and the bust was so godawful hideous that Clay’s “What the hell am I supposed to do with that?” got a huge laugh. (I heard “hell” and the word seemed perfect for the occasion.) The skit was mercifully brief and I was glad that some of the stuff I saw being taped got left on the cutting room floor. What was left? Eh, whatever.

The best part of the time while they were showing that footage was watching Clay and Jimmy head to head in the semi-darkness as they watched, seeing Clay’s dumbfounded look as the bit unfolded and then watching him stretch his body out to full length in his chair, laughing at the absurdity.

I love hearing Clay talk about his time in “Spamalot” --- not surprisingly, Jimmy fed Clay the setup for these tales rather than concentrating on album talk. (The put-in picture didn’t show up for nothing.) It’s good to hear the affection in his voice as he speaks about his castmates, and even better to known that somewhere, they are fondly remembering him.

He talked about the energy of the theater audiences, but when he said that some people had yelled out his name, I heard a few people murmur, sotto voce, “That’s not true.”

No, but I see Clay and his “Spamalot” audience comments as another in a long series of Clay Aiken as Mark Twain, teller of tale tales and exaggerated accounts. Clay has a very good ear for these, far more often than not, and knows how to be entertaining.

From being served nasty Irish food that crawled around on his plate, to an old man hitting him with his cane, to his best friend carefully setting down her tray while Clay was sprawled out unconscious on the floor at McDonald’s, to residents of Chinatown picking up and tossing back octopus legs until they find exactly the right one while yelling at him in Mandarin, to giving a shout-out to his homie Kreativv down at the Slauson Swap Meet, to pretending not to notice that he spent an entire segment talking to Kimmel while astride a horse, to obnoxious audience members yelling “Claaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay,” laughing like hyenas over nothing in particular and then checking their e-mails when he was offstage --- these tales are all too ludicrous to be true.

The television audience at home is laughing, but they likely don’t believe a word of Clay’s comic stories.

Certainly, people don’t behave in such a ridiculous way in real life, do they?

He makes me laugh, whether he’s telling one of life’s funny truths or engaging in a flight of fancy, when he’s kidding on the square, and even when he’s not kidding at all.

What I loved most of all was Clay’s story about the new actor put-in (and I agree, it was most likely Bradley Dean.) I love hearing him speak about his “peers” with such affection and regard, and I love knowing that he was part of the reason that the very first newbie after him received a fun embrace of welcome. I wish Jimmy had followed the "harem" lead,because it was great to see Clay surrounded by all of those gorgeous women. (I swear, though, I think I dated that guy with the black jacket, striped shirt and ridiculous hairstyle back in the 80s…)

Is there anyone else who would love to see some of the other “Spamalot” photos Clay has?

He was also amusing in his fish-out-of-water tale about visiting Chinatown. (I thought of Clay and the edamame at Benihana, of all of the tales of Clay’s dislike of what are, to him, unusual foods, of how he’s spoken of being a plain person.) There he was, venturing forth to find a throat serum with completely unknown ingredients, this tall blond outsider to a neighborhood where everything seemed so different to him. Clay does dismay well, setting up a world where everyone’s behavior is inexplicable to him, but he turns the joke back on himself. Works for me.

The time always go by too quickly. Jimmy shows the album again, makes a joke about Kipper’s single name, and Clay briefly mentions that he’s worked with Sting before returning to the zaniness. I think, well, those are three men already well known by the single name… Sting, Kipper and Clay.

Clay and Jimmy pose for a few pictures with the ugly bust, Clay pulling faces and then relaxing, interview over. Jerome is now lurking on the horizon like Kilamanjaro, and he moves over now to walk Clay out.

I was surprised that one of the audience coordinators had everyone in the left and middle sections of the risers get up at once to go up to the concert. I was only two people from the aisle and was soon on the move, making it out and up the stairs quickly (thank the goddess for the weight loss and the exercise I’ve been getting!) I ended up three or four rows back from the middle of the stage, right in front of the microphone, with a really great view. Looking around and behind me, I don’t think more than two dozen people got into the concert area after I did.

Clay waved at the crowd and spoke to a few people he recognized in the audience, doing a bit of gentle snarking. They were looking around, so I gave a wave to Quiana and Angela and nodded at the band members whose eyes I caught. Then I turned back as Clay moved to the mic.

I looked at him as the first few notes played. There is nothing typical about his appearance, but he really is a handsome man. Odd to me that some cannot see that, but I am very glad that I can.

It is always so good to hear him sing. That close, I could hear his voice without amplification. It really is a thing of beauty.

I understand some reasons why RCA might have chosen "On My Way Here" to be the lead single. Some of the lyrics resonate with me. I like the song and, in the right setting, I think it can play well live. Other than a note or two, Clay was in fine voice on the song. His interpretation was strong, the backing vocalists and instrumentalists were spot-on and mixed well.

What is it I’m trying to say, then?

For me, the song is so quiet and introspective before it builds to its victorious finish that it seems to get lost a bit on television. (Oddly enough, I don’t think that will happen in concert, because I enjoyed it more live than I did when I watched it on TV later.) In the pacing of a concert, a singer can build in a transition to a quieter number. To me, "On My Way Here" seems smaller on television than it does through a pair of good headphones, with the music capturing my attention every time the CD begins. I felt a difference in the way it plays in various formats and television is not its best setting for me.

I still loved hearing Clay sing.

Jimmy gave the goodnight, and Clay launched into “Ashes.” Now that is a song and a sound that gets to me. I wish that everyone who loved “Invisible”-era Clay Aiken could see him perform this song: informed by his history and experience, he has moved far beyond that never-the-less captivating performer of five years ago.

The energy in the room ratcheted up really high. Clay started to groove and, hitting his stride, began to wail. He closed his eyes, threw back his head, hair flying, and sang, “Try and remind me now.” That was the sound of freedom.

Damnation, this song rocks! There were voices everywhere singing along, but rather than disliking that as I sometimes do, it was almost like a part of the performance, a chorus of approval, acceptance and affection for the man on the stage, his voice rising above all. It was one of the strongest performances I have ever seen Clay give and I grabbed every note and held on tight.

I was so thrilled to be there to hear this. I knew that, somewhere in the first few seconds, a jackass had brayed and put an end to it for all but the few who were there. I hope I’ve captured a little bit of it for everyone.

Heading out into the warm evening, I called in my final report and headed for the subway. I was smiling then, and I am still smiling now.

I don’t know what Clay Aiken is doing today. I don’t know where he is. I don’t know when fans will hear from him again. I don’t know how this kickass, magnificent album of his will do over time.

But I’m okay. My life has its challenges, but it’s pretty good. I know that Clay will be around for as long as he chooses to be and, one way or another, sometimes he will sing to me. I will always get that instant smile in response to his, I’ll laugh when I hear his goofy guffaw and I will go on delighting at how well he has grown and how content he seems.

Maybe one day he’ll have a worldwide #1. Maybe he’ll settle into a groove that makes him the most comfortable. Maybe he’ll excel in another area of his prodigious talent. I just know that he is not going anywhere --- except for back home for a while.

So --- godspeed you home, Clay. Sit on your back porch, play with your dogs, drink some sweet tea, enjoy the company of your family and friends, feel the love of someone who knows the real you. Rest, relax, and come back when you’re ready.

Amen!  The ‘Clay Nation’ I’ve come to know is passionate, articulate, & deeply caring. It is so ironic that in our journey together supporting this amazing talent, we have been so easily dismissed via the moniker, Claymate, which has been hijacked by those who seek to disparage him at every turn. Let us collectively, as a vital community of Clay enthusiasts, manifest the dignity and class that in reality characterizes us all.  That is definitely a gift we can offer this dear young man.

    really object to being classified as stupid by the media. Yes! I love and admire Clay both for his
    wonderful voice and caring heart but nothing would have enduced me to slobber over a clay bust.
     I buy his albums, watch his appearancesand go to his concerts  and enjoy every minute but

Good news this morning ... I just read at CV that On My Way Here is #30 on the AC Chart (was #39 last week, as a comparison). HERE'S (http://www.mmr247.com/mmrweb/AllAccess/Charts.asp?format=a1r&cutoff=0&showtopn=2000) the chart if you want to have a look. :bigsmile

Well Clay's new CD, On My Way Here, can easily be called My Life (if Bill Clinton hadn't already taken that title) or Your Life, or better yet, Soundtrack to OUR Lives.  In any event, this new CD, which contains all original music, is filled with songs with universal messages, ones we can all relate to.  And that is one of the many strengths of the album.  The CD has a nice variety of upbeat (Falling, Everything I Have, Ashes), mid-tempo (Grace of God, Where I Draw the Line, Weight of the World), and ballads, as well as many different musical styles (a hint of country, one r&b bluesy, pop, religious, soft rock, AC). While I usually prefer upbeat music to ballads, I do love ballads with strong vocals, melodies, and lyrics.  And the songs on this CD meet all of that criteria. As usual, Clay's vocals are powerful, soaring, effortless, and flawless.  (I know that's strong praise, but the guy has an amazing voice.  If nothing else, you gotta give him that.) The lyrics are beautiful and true.  Really really listen to the lyrics.  Sometimes they will make you smile and make your heart soar, and other times, they will make you cry as you can relate them personally to your own life.  If you are a Clay fan, you will love this CD.  If you like Clay but weren't impressed with his last album, A Thousand Different Ways, please give this new album a chance.  It's all new material and it's Clay at his finest.  As much as I loved Measure of A Man, this album may take its place in my book as Clay's best album yet.  And if you're not a fan of Clay, listen to the snippets on Itunes.  You might actually be surprised.  My ranking: 5 stars.  Now here's the part where I'm supposed to say which songs to download. Well, sorry, but I can't do that lol.  I'd end up naming ten songs, so that would be no help.  So here's a song-by-song list, so you can decide for yourself.

Should-be-a-hit-song- FALLING - If it was anybody else but Clay singing it, this would be a hit on top 40 radio.  And that's not just wishful thinking on my part.  I truly believe in this song.  It's upbeat, catchy, and a little rockin'.  My favorite song (and most played) on the new CD.

Can't-help-singing-along - ASHES - Another upbeat, catchy tune, talking about overcoming hardships and rising above.  Has a slightly country rock vibe to it.  I'd love to sing this song to all the people who have ever made my life difficult.

Dedicate-this-song-to-the-person-you-love-the-most - THE REAL ME - This song does make me cry.  It's talking to the one person who really knows you the best, the only one who really knows who you are and everything about you, what you might hide or be uncomfortable to display in front of others.  It could be talking about your significant other, a parent, a friend, God, etc. This is another song that all of us, whether 18 or 80, can relate to.

Wow-that-is-something-I-would-not-expect-Clay-to-sing - EVERYTHING I DON'T NEED - An r&b bluesy song that is really something different.  One of the best songs on the album.  Upbeat, catchy, you might just want to sing along with it type of song.  You might want to dedicate this one to an ex. 

It-will-move-you - AS LONG AS WE'RE HERE - A ballad with a very powerful refrain and message. Out of all the songs on this CD, this one moves me the most. Our days on Earth are numbered, so we are going to make the most of our lives, and LOVE.  By the time the refrain is repeated near the end of the song, with powerful, powerful vocals by Clay, I'm ready to stand up if I'm sitting, or sit down if I'm standing.  It's that moving to me.  If I were ever on Idol (which I wouldn't be because I can't sing, but if I could) that would be the song I'd picked for inspirational week. It was written by a country songwriter, and it definitely has a bit of a country vibe to it.

It-will-make-you-smile-and-inspire-you - ON MY WAY HERE - The first single off the album, written by Ryan Tedder of One Republic (who also wrote Leona Lewis's hit Bleeding Love).  Another ballad, but it picks up in the chorus with a strong beat.  Lyrics on this one are just great.  It's about realizing your dreams in spite of doubts and fear, and how all the experiences in your life help shape your life. Personally I think it would make a nice send off song for next year's Idol.

Catchy-in-spite-of-itself - WEIGHT OF THE WORLD - Okay this is one of the two songs that wouldn't have been on my download list. However, the most I listen to it, the more I get to like it.  It's a mid-tempo/upbeat song that kind of gets stuck in your head.  You might tap your foot to it or sing along with it without even realizing it.

Clay-please-keep-writing-songs - LOVER ALL ALONE - This song was written by Clay and has a haunting melody. It can make you cry.  It's about wanting to be in love, trying to convince yourself you are in love, but just not finding it. I'm sure we can all relate to this song at one point in our lives, whether now, or in the past, or in the future.  Even Ken Barnes of Idol Chatter (USA Today) likes this song, and he's not a Clay fan.

Oh-to-be-in-love - SOMETHING ABOUT US - This song should be played at everybody's wedding or anniversary.  Really one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard.  It has a classic, kind of standard feel to it, with a modern twist.  Would make a lovely waltz.  If you're not in love, this song makes you wish you were, so somebody would sing it to you.

Could-be-a-AC-hit - WHERE I DRAW THE LINE - Midtempo song that is another one of my favorites.  You can really get into the chorus and beat, and relate to the lyrics.  It's about being hurt in the past, and trying to protect your heart so you won't get hurt again.

All-religions-will-love-this-song - GRACE OF GOD - Whether you are Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, etc., or just believe in a higher power, you will get something out of this song.  It's about realizing how God has blessed you.  Nice and mid-tempo.  Wish they would play it at my church lol.

I-wish-it-weren't-but-it's-all-too-true - SACRIFICIAL LOVE - This song really makes you think.  Could easily be played in a movie about a less than ideal relationship.  It's about being with someone who is not really in love with you, but are with you now because their ideal person has not yet come along.  Unfortunately, this is probably very true in life and many of us can probably relate to it.  Anyway, this song really sticks with you.

And congrats to you if you actually read this whole thing!  And my apologies for any misspellings or grammatical errors.  Hope you will enjoy this CD even half as much as I have!

The Clay Aiken comment is apt; his fans have swarmed to Archie's side. Their ilk also sniff at the thought of edgy rocker Cook taking top prize this year. The finale will be a throwdown, not only between two singers but two breeds of artist and two distinct groups of fans.

Yes Mr Aiken himself. She was having lunch at a restaurant called Savannah's in Burbank. My sister works for Disney Studio and I guess the restaurant is close by. tend to believe Clay's position on payola, and don't think it's very productive to try to fight those dragons, whether they be real or mythical.

I want to know why people aren't buying this cd. True, it's a throwback to the olden days of golden voices and poetic lyrics, but even the most jaded, cynical "cool kid" out there has to be moved by art, whether they mention it to their friends or not. If Clay is the poster child for guilty pleasures, I'm all for it. Buy the frell cd and don't tell anybody--nobody cares as long as you buy it. And your friend buys it and doesn't tell anybody. I don't think that syncs well with the goals of viral marketing, but the beauty of his voice should be able to leap tall buildings with a single frying-pan glory note, even if it's heard at 2 am with headphones on and the door closed.

I think TC should go back to the basics and market that. Stop trying to be the antithesis to cool. Stop trying to be the messenger of Faye paper-bag life lessons. Maybe Clay talked about it too much and didn't just SING enough. Pull a Donny Osmond "Soldier of Love" and see if people sit up and take notice. How about a free concert in Raleigh. A free concert in NY. A free concert in LA. I hate that Jaymes tells him to stay inside his lane when he needs to be thinking outside the box. I'll give her credit for making him write "Lover All Alone", but the best song on the cd belongs to him alone. I wish he would own up to it.

The viral marketing campaign didn't work because they targeted obscure sites that hardly anybody listens to. We had to scramble to find most of it, and we're pretty savvy that way.

I know his options were limited. But a little direction from TC to the Clay Nation might have made a difference. Clay said we were the best publicity people he's ever had, and I believe it. But we need a road map to somewhere. Otherwise, we're sitting in a car with a Dimatapp-scented hangtag at a grungy rest stop, sucking on a Slim Jim with "On My Way Here" on the cd where nobody can hear it.

I'd like to hear Clay talk about the mechanics of singing more than I want to hear him say he'd leave a dance club that played his music. I just don't see where that 10-second soundbyte could sell ANY music of his.

Of course, the fans gets front and center, which is all kinds of squick. We need a fan boot camp. We get all kinds of attention, but boy howdy, does the message get lost somehow. And I take full responsibility for my own radio interview back in 1872 or whenever it was where I said we were watching Mediabase numbers. I kick myself for not saying he had the vocal proficiency of top-tier performers, but I was stuck in a broomcloset with an open bag of kibble. I think the fumes got to me. No, Clay got to me, but cut me some slack. You try talking to him on the radio while you're having a brain fart.

But he knows he sings well. We know that. We know that he knows that. He knows that we know he knows that. Yes, I think he's a YOOGE white liar sometimes, but he KNOWS he sounds frell PERFECT on some of these songs. He's not stupid. Well, not all the time. HAHA, kidding people. He's a regular Einstein.

He really needs to cut the self-deprecating crap sometimes and own up to being a good singer. He's not deaf. He's not stupid. He knows what he sounds like in the shower. So move on to other stuff besides not being cool. I think most people would choose "great" over "cool." That's "most people", not stupid idjits who buy cds with songs like "I want to see your kitty." I don't even count them as humanoid even though they apparently have spending money.

Honestly, I don't know what's wrong with people. It's like having to hold somebody's head to make them look at a Monet and saying "look at this. This is NOT paint by numbers. This is some frell good stuff whether you know it or not."

On Jimmy Kimmel, he talks about AI like it's a political campaign; says that for him there's only one Idol and his name is "Clay Jefferson Aiken".

Yes, it seems to me that for all of Clay's talk about becoming comfortable in his own skin, that he still has a way to go... I sure would like to see him evolve to the point of being able to "OWN" his strengths and talents. 

WRAL FM RALEIGH NC actually played On My Way Here..I heard it with my own ears, today at 8:25am.

Nothing is worth getting too worked up about, least of all things that can't be changed, so promise yourself that no matter what happens this week, you'll find reasons to smile. Laughter is, was, and always will be the best medicine.

Just hours before this close knit family was celebrating the engagement of the oldest daughter Emily Chapman, and were just hours away from a graduation party marking Caleb Chapman's completion of high school. Now, they are preparing to bury a child who blew out 5 candles on a birthday cake less than 10 days ago.

Are singers born with the elusive "star factor" or are such stars created by record companies and image-makers? Rosanne takes a look at Clay Aiken, who just a few months ago was a teacher known only to those around him, to see the "star factor" at work.

During the course of my career as a voice coach and conductor, I have encountered exceptional young vocal talent. Many have the essential attributes that would plausibly contribute to their success in the arts. However, for some intangible reason, that elusive"star factor" - the quality that sets the most exceptional and unique artists apart from the rest of their peers - is not readily apparent in many of these singers. Yes, they perform well - oftentimes with stellar vocal quality and stage presence - yet, it just isn't quite enough to "put them over the top."
Are certain performers born with this mysterious star quality or can it be manufactured or acquired through proper training and guidance? In other words, is genetic destiny a key factor here? For example, one of my most gifted students, Patricia O'Callaghan - a star waiting to be discovered when she walked into my studio at the age of 16 years - has received international acclaim over the past three years and has been singled out by Billboard Magazine as "the foremost cabaret star of her generation." The star factor was always there - it was the discovery on a global level that took time, patience, and perseverance. One would argue, then, that Patricia's determination and resolve played an important part in her success. Likewise, by the time the general public became aware of Celine Dion or Billy Joel or Barbra Streisand, they were bona fide superstars and had struggled for years and years before their names became household words. So, of course, one could assume that their hard work, talent, and charisma, nurtured over time, would result in their success in the entertainment world. Stars are created, not born, correct?
The answer can be found in two words - Clay Aiken. Just six months ago, Clay Aiken was carrying on his admirable work teaching autistic children in Raleigh, North Carolina. He scarcely looked beyond his chosen career as a Special Education teacher. Yes, he had gained excellent musical experience through his participation in his high school choir, but, according to all news sources, this was the extent of his musical training. Then, a mother of one of his students encouraged him to audition for American Idol Season 2. He was hesitant at first, but through this parent's encouragement, he agreed to give it a try.
After being rejected at the Regional competition, Clay tenaciously journeyed to Atlanta and tried again. After completing the preliminary rounds, he confidently performed for Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson, who, thankfully, saw that something special, that spark, that star quality - despite the fact that his "image" was not correct according to today's standards. Of course, the rest is history. Within six months, Clay was a superstar. Yet, in order to achieve this status, this young man had to perform live and flawlessly each week before millions of viewers. The transformation of Clay Aiken, teacher, to Clay Aiken, superstar, is, in my opinion, nothing short of spectacular.
Yes, American Idol spiffed him up and transformed him - but the other contestants - including our AI 2 winner Ruben Studdard, who I absolutely adore - were treated in the same manner and yet, Clay, almost instantaneously, emerged as a superstar. It really is a phenomenal music success story that confirms the basic fact that true stars are born, not manufactured. His talent, his persona, his charisma were not created from technologically-enhanced music videos, glitzy sound recordings, or management hype, but from a more reality based platform that American Idol and its parent Pop Idol have formulated. Superior talent, spark, and that elusive star quality all played a part of Clay Aiken's destiny 24 years ago and today it has come to fruition. How else can you explain the fact that, as of this writing, Clay's new CD has been sitting at #1 on Amazon.com for over three weeks - outselling every major artist.
Yesterday, he was a talented, nurturing Special Education teacher, unaware of the depth of his outstanding vocal abilities and charisma. Today he joins the ranks of our true stars - like Barbra Streisand, Billy Joel, Elton John, Barry Manilow, Celine Dion, and so many others - who embrace excellence first and everything else second and set the standard for future performers to follow. Let's hope that 19 Management, RCA, and all the "powers that be" that are now involved with Clay's career really take advantage and market this young man judiciously and astutely. Also, let us hope that the American Idol team and the producers of the highly anticipated Canadian Idol show never lose sight of their mission to celebrate and value excellence and unique star potential in our future Idol finalists.

In the recent Time magazine article, American Idol finalist Clay Aiken reported the difficulty that he had experienced with RCA Records during the recording of his first album, Measure of a Man. The RCA people insisted that his much anticipated album would not – could not – will not – sell unless he added an element of sexual innuendo and edge to the final product. Clay battled the RCA executives and won, much to the relief of his thousands of fans who voted for him. He won not only because of his enormous talent, but also because of his principled and ethical values and beliefs. All of these qualities combined are responsible for the phenomenon known as Clay Aiken. Why oh why would anyone – especially RCA Records – want to tamper with success? In addition, as I write this article, Clay’s full length CD is comfortably positioned at the #1 spot on Amazon.com, days before the release date of October the 14th. So, I ask you, who is the winner now?
Months ago, I wrote an article about Clay’s star quality and the reasons why destiny somehow selected him for this role. Through his voice and compassionate personality, Clay has awakened and reinforced everything that is respectable and dignified in the human spirit. As terrorists around the world continue to corrupt our innocence and sense of security within our lives, Clay’s music allows us to escape to a time where life was less complicated, more sheltered and wholly effortless.
However, this is not to say that Clay is without flaws; he is human, after all. He even admitted in his recent PrimeTime Live interview with Diane Sawyer that he did not want to be perceived as a perfect human being. Yet, in admitting this fact, he reinforced our fascination and admiration for him. Simply put, Clay Aiken is a really charming young man, possessing an outstanding vocal talent combined with a morally principled approach to his everyday trials and tribulations. As a young child, he was burdened with the horrendous abandonment of an abusive father, the unfortunate suicide of his sister, the untimely death of his devoted stepfather, and the struggle to be “everything that his biological father wasn’t.”
His music has allowed him – as well as his fans – to escape to an innocent, carefree world and I condemn RCA Records for trying to convince Clay to tamper with his vision and commitment to his musical destiny and mission. We have heard and seen enough high-priced vulgar and sexually demonstrative performers to last a lifetime. Our world, our universe as we know it, is spinning out of control and we need to find a way of firmly applying our emotional brakes so that we can breathe once again. Clay and his music is one excellent method of doing so – his music reinforces our delicate emotional equilibrium and allows us to focus on and prioritize the good things in life. In addition, his survival and success from his personal catastrophic life experiences delivers a beacon of hope to others – young and old – who may be presently coping with emotional, physical and spiritual suffering.
As a voice teacher, young aspiring musicians who have been brainwashed by the negative influences within our music industry oftentimes confront me and challenge me with their views of the world. I have to tell you that it is a very long grueling road toward educating them to develop and appreciate the more positive role models in today’s world – especially in the music industry. This is extremely important as I feel that their young lives are held in a very tenuous balance between right and wrong and, if allowed to move in the latter direction, these young adults will self-destruct.
Thank you, Clay, for allowing yourself to be vulnerable and sincere through your international fame and success. You and your music are like a breath of fresh air – protecting us from the current wave of musical pollution that insults our intelligence and smothers our daily lives. We will always support and applaud and celebrate your ideals and principles, as they will permit us to appreciate and value all that is precious in the world and in our personal lives.

AS FOR WINNING THE BATTLE AND NOT THE WAR----I HAVE A VERY LONG THEORY ABOUT 2005.  SUFFICE IT TO SAY, I THINK HE HAD A WHOLE LOT MORE BATTLES TO FIGHT THAN WE WERE EVER AWARE OF OR EVER WILL BE UNLESS HE WRITES A TELL-ALL BOOK.  THANKS TO HIS FAITH AND STRENGTH, HE SURVIVED WITH HIS DIGNITY INTACT.

This got me to thinking.  I'm betting this will eventually be the breakout song on the album because there are so many possibilities for using it.

*Mix tapes for the mall or in restaurants

Watch the youtube and see if you agree.  It makes me remember when I first became aware of Mariah Carey in 2000, 10 years after her debut!!!  Oxsana Baiul was skating to her song "My All" and it was gorgeous.  I bought that CD and all her early stuff and played it over and over for at least a year.  I found that I didn't like her stuff that came out near the end of the nineties, but the early stuff is still among my favorites.  Using Clay's music in this way could do alot toward getting it heard.

I'm seeing alot of youtubes coming out now using On My Way Here songs.  I think this is a strategy (devised by Clay fans I might add) that can really pay off.  I'm excited about this.

Look how wonderful Spamalot turned out and a lot of fans were sure it would ruin his career. 

I'm glad I'd never heard that before because I would have been incensed!!!

I however would disagree that working with Jaymes Foster would be considered "working with the BEST" but having worked with her myself in the past, I know her methods and I believe that is why Clay's material is somewhat of an issue.

But Kipper is a good guy and one of the best for sure, and he gathered up a few talented musicians. Many are good friends to me. ( and thanks for giving them a shout out with the links) I do believe Clay will find his own way. he has the chops and you can't deny that.

So, I got to wondering, as I pedaled around.... Do they have a banner in their conference room that reads, "Welcome, T.I.T.S." ?

I do believe Clay will find his own way. he has the chops and you can't deny that.

I have come to the conclusion that music critics are as believeable as politicians. The ratings they give are often laughable, but really troubling. Do any of them have any music education, experience, background? Who hires them. This expose itself is an eyeopener. I just listened to the single, On My Way Home because of the information I read here. And because of both, I've been impressed enough to purchase the CD. Thank you for your efforts, there should be heads rolling and jobs lost -- it appears that you can do their jobs better than they can.

I just checked the WRAL FM Mix101.5( Raleigh)site to see what their playlist has been for today...Clay was played 1 time today, at 12:34 pm...On My Way Here is now showing at  #80, yesterday it was # 155. Maybe things are picking up...however ,Daughtery's Home was played 6 times and his new song(don't remember the title ) 2 times.

If you live in the Raleigh area why not e-mail or call the station and request,On My Way Here ?

Petjen ~ this is my personal opinion on this subject.  Don't request a song unless you want to hear the song.  So only request from your own local radio stations when you are going to be around to hear it.  Any other approach would not be sincere and genuine.  And we don't want to be accused of being "over the top", now do we?

Even if entertainment is important as comfort and escape from reality, today's music, unlike in the past, is readily available for free, legally or not. All in all, I don't think using any past or current marketing model is an answer. New game plan and innovation will have to be implemented. I firmly believe from the beginning that Clay should explore the international market, especially Asia, while his own country is a very difficult and challenging market for him, because of, ironically, a cultural incompatibility and a spiraling-down economy. I am also a supporter of his let-go-and-let-God attitude. More doors will be open for him, partly because many influential industry people do appreciate and respect him, his talents and work ethics, at least just about everybody who ever gets to know him.

No worry or panic from me, or urging of actions to take because of such worry or panic. I believe more in the goal oriented than the task oriented approach. The former keeps your mind and eyes open to inspiration, new paths and opportunities while the latter limits them. IOW, I prefer a career plan based on aspiration than on perceived need for rescue.

It is damaging to Clay when some members of his fandom think they can dictate how he should manage his career, choose his songs, etc.

I just find it appalling that Clay doesn't listen to his fan.  Surely, they know how to run his career and personal life better than he does.  Why can't he grasp that?
