My husband said if not for the Claymates, Clay won't be as popular... and I said that's why critics and others attack claymates as rabid and crazy but I'm sure they wish they are the object of our affection. Ha Ha.!!!!

I want to address this- not against your husband, but against this whole idea. Claymates and the REST OF US fans are definitely what makes Clay popular. Isnt that what being a fan of someone does? U2 wouldnt be popular without their fans either, because they are the ones that buy the CD and concert tickets, etc.

This singling out of the fans is really making me angry. We are not ALL CLAYMATES but we are fans of Clay.

Well, for the dance from Fiddler alone, he's working the heck out of his quads (front of thighs), adductors (inner thighs), hamstrings (back of thighs), and gluts. And abs, which keep him from falling over. :wink

But if he's never really "moved" before, he's probably sore all over!

It doesn't help that, in every interview he does, the host says, "Oh, look at all the CLAYMATES here!" They use it as a generic term for "fans of Clay." We, on the other hand, use it to refer to what Clay politely calls his "very enthusiastic" fans--the screamers, the panty-throwers, the ones who don't think it's necessary to conduct themselves appropriately in public.

Around here (Raleigh), there seems to be a dichotomy among those who like Clay. There are fans, and then there are the Claymates-- who are rather... hardcore in their devotion. :hypno

They are who I was thinking of when I posted earlier.

Way back when, as a bellboy at a Maryland hotel, I had the privilege of driving Manilow around in a courtesy van. Long story short: Fanilows are faster than they look.

Nothing truly out of the ordinary happened..but since I was so close..I did overhear Clay ad lib something which was hilarious. During the Camelot scene while the girls are dancing after they pop out of the baby carriages..while Clay was looking at the one I heard him say "come to daddy baby!" and I just started CRACKING UP! It was sooo funny. I sorta wish more people could have heard it..but I gotta be honest and say that I loved it..LOL.

I'm now writing my recap from my Spamalot time in NYC this past weekend. We decided to get matinee tickets on Friday for the Sunday matinee. While at the ticket box office and trying to decide which tickets to get, he asked if we were Clay Aiken fans and we said Yes! So we got really good seats. I asked him if he's met Clay and he said he did and that Clay actually manned the ticket booth for them once and they all had a break! The ticket guy said that no one's ever done that since James Earl Jones! He also said that Clay's such a nice guy.

Explanation of seat A101: The person who has that seat for 8 shows was there today(LOML was next to her......totally by the luck of the draw). They did the whole routine complete with the large A101 rock but Patsy walked right by her and took a man in seat D101. I wonder if posting that message at Sean's Myspace was such a good idea????

They got autographs.........there were around 100 at the stage door. Someone asked Clay who would be the next American Idol and he said, "I couldn't care less". Jerome came out the stage door after Clay went back in and left alone..........that is interesting.

Just back from the show in my room hungrily gobbling Arabic and Chinese food from the deli.

Okay. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEee!

The show is faboo. Not a dull moment. Brilliant, everyone in it is a shining star and huge talent, including Clay.

His accents, his faces, his background chatter ( rhubarb,rhubarb,Hail Caesar!), his interactions with everyone and that FACE! Oy! And he said "goyim"! He IS a dancer- a natural- it just had to be brought out properly , given permission, coaxed. And can he shimmy and shake!

He does not disappoint. Again, he is in brilliant company who lift him higher.

At the Stage Door: I think I was channelling merriee or something, but I was cracking up the waiting crowd with OTT statements with an English accent.

I had the poster for anyone to sign. Christopher Seibert came up and I shoved Clay's dress in his face. "You want me to sign on CLay?"
"Yes!" I screamed, "you are too fabulous!"

Next up the man himself. I understand his embarrassment now. After you see the show, and the brilliant talent, you understand why he doesn't want to be shown extra attention.

He looked like Leslie Howard/Peter O'Toole classic English movie star in that camel coat and blond hair with the aquiline nose. When he came round my way, I was standing behind other women, he did grab my poster and he saw Seibert's autograph already on it. I did it on purpose.

"What? You had somebody signin' on mah picture?"

"Of course, you all were great!" He laughed.

Hannah Waddingham came around and I decried how fabulous her breasts were. "And they're real, " she smirked. "How do you do it?"
"Great costuming"!

Lancelot and the kid who played Herbert also signed . So they're all on Clay.

Oh, after Clay was done , he told everyone to stay and sing "Happy Birthday" to the kid who played Herbert. "I"ll go get him"" said Clay. When they came back out , we all sang HB and this kid almost cried. We were such good little fans. And that kid was amazing.

That face is so gorgeous, and they have got his wig the right shade now. A true strawberry blonde. He is too beautiful . As Brother Maynard , he had the English preacher thing DOWN. I can't wait for what waits for him next, so talented is he. I love the Cockney dopey guard.

He fits in with that cast perfectly.

I bought a ticket for tomorrow's matinee! Yay! Hubby's gonna go play hooky. I 'll join beagle2 and flyinpenguin.

Get this: the guy in the box office said :"Clay is much better, much better!" meaning , as opposed to the other guy.

I said,"Clay's a real comedian , we've seen it in concert and now everyone else will see."

"OH, yeah" he said, "Clay is a comedian".

The Clay fans were laughing at my lame attempt at Clayversion, but it looks like the man was already converted.

Hubby got great shots of Clay but I don't have one of those accounts.

Later that day, Terri Dooge, my traveling companion, and I had a very interesting experience at the Berkley parade. So it is 4:50 pm, we are sitting in the, at this point, warm, closed-top convertible, chatting about Clay Aiken (who else?), waiting for the parade to commence.

It would be great if the CD came out at the end of May. It seems like Clay might be getting the CD he wanted last time.

Personally, I enjoy the discussions we have, and the fact that we can have them without the insults, name-calling, and accusations that are inherent in some so-called "livelier" boards.

Color Me Surprised: Clay Aiken Is Fantastic in Spamalot
 
If I'm being totally honest, I didn't go into today's matinee performance of Spamalot with the highest of expectations. Since it had been announced that Clay Aiken was joining the Broadway cast in the role of Sir Robin I've been dubious as to how good of a fit the American Idol runner-up and the Monty Python show would be.

Well color me very pleasantly surprised -- Clay was great!

His voice was, of course, fantastic, but it was his comic timing and his dancing that shocked me the most. From the moment he appeared on stage, he was totally, and delightfully, in character, and he maintained that commitment throughout the entire show. He delivered his lines like an old pro, and completely embraced his character's often quirky movement, footwork, and comic bits, even when they required him to make fun of himself.

Best of all -- he appeared to be having the time of his life. The often irreverent humor of the show seemed to fit him like a glove, and he imbued each of his scenes with what appeared to be a genuine sense of joy.

I was a big Clay supporter back in Season 2 of Idol, but his attitude the past several years has turned me off a bit to him. However, seeing him sing, dance, act, and laugh, I remembered the charming, dorky fella' who shocked us all with his pipes back on Idol. I half-expected him to be stiff and awkward -- instead, he was loose and relaxed, creating real chemistry with his co-stars.
Speaking of his co-stars, the cast is more solid and the show tighter than it's been since it first opened. As Sir Lancelot, Rick Holmes was a hoot and a half, and a more accomplished song-and-dance man than Hank Azaria, who created the role. Chris Seiber has returned to the show, and although he appears to have put on about 30lbs, he was funny as ever playing Sir Galahad. Tom Deckman played the roles originated by Christian Borle with a delightfully deadpan gaze plastered across his face, and Hannah Waddingham, imported from the British version of Spamalot, was perfection as the Lady of the Lake.

All in all, Clay and the cast have managed to make Spamalot a must-see once again.

I lurk mostly, because when I post - nobody seems to really care what I have to say - so I just lurk!!!  Just sayin!!!
But if I want to know what is going on - I do come here to see what everybody is talking about.  I just leave it to the handful on this thread to keep the chatter going!!

We didn't know that we'd be doing all of that traveling with people we were going to be meeting on internet message boards.If someone had told me five years ago that someone I had never met would offer to drive me to Poughkeepsie NY in the dead of winter and share a hotel room with me....and that I would agree to it without a moment's hesitation I would have asked what they were smoking.

Did you think the sound of someone's voice would be able to move you to tears?The curve of their lashes or the movement of their fingers make you gasp for breath?

Just got back from NYC and 3 shows!!! Front Row Mezzanine, Standing Room Only and the real FRONT ROW!!!! I can only parrot everyone else who has posted; If you have not been, by hook or by crook... GET THERE!! Watching Clay, once again command the stage in such a totally different way was mezmerizing. His comedic timing was perfect and hilarious, his accent and facial expressions for each of his character's was simply dead on- I don't know which I found more side splitting- ,Brother Maynard, the Guard or the Sir Robin's escape from the French! His dancing, well let's just say the man is fluid, and can move across the stage like a professional dancer!!! From the first shimmy on, the bottle dance scene stole the show!!! I can see why he has commented on being whooped, it's like an aerobic workout for 2 hours. I just kept thinking, I can't believe he learned all of the choreography, script, songs and blocking in basically 1 week!!! I did say to him at the stage door.. Clay, You can DANCE!!! Of course his reply was..."It's all mirrors". ..... His fellow cast members are amazing, and seem to truly appreciate what Clay has brought to this show.

 I only occasionaly post because it is difficult for me to express my feelings and opinions in written words. I work better face to face when you can talk. I think sometimes what I say doesn't come across the right way so I just choose not to post.

I was at the matinee today and while there were definitely Claymates there, I would say the audience was mostly others. full house. Lots of men - couples, father/son types, buddies, etc. The show had a different feel than Opening Night that's for sure, when it was all US.
Waiting to get in I heard 2 women talking about Clay only being in it for the month, and they hoped he was at this performance. I filled them in on his run. They remembered him from AI and were eager to see him. Unfortunately I couldn't find them to ask what they thought later. I did ask afew people around me - none particularly Clay fans and all were enthusiastic. People nearby mentioned this being the first time they've seen any "AI" in a performance. I have no doubt he will have many more fans soon enough

I went with my brother, who majored in theater and works in NYC and he was VERY impressed with Clay. His favorite scene was Sir Robin misunderstanding God, thinking he was looking for quail. He also commented on the guard banter. (My brother is a Monty Python fan and honestly had hoped to like Spam. a bit more than he did) He thought Clay was one of the best on stage.

I did not follow any of the reports after opening weekend, so not sure how this compares with the rest of the week. The audience appreciated the humor, and Clay definitely got some applause/shouts specific to him but nothing like opening night. For me, i was absolutely so blown away by the whole package opening night that this show was a tad less magical, but still amazing and wonderful to see Clay in this role. I still laughed outloud in parts even though i knew they were coming. I thought his accent was even better tonight, more natural somehow. I didn't notice him looking to others for footing cues or reaching to the left for a prop on the right (Things I found endearing opening night!)

There was a surprise for me re: the audience participation at the end (and I daresay a surprise for the person in A101 from what I heard) but not sure if sharing that is a spoiler? I would like to find out if they switched it up other nights, too. Anyone?

Oh, and in the Knights that say NI scene, king Arthur and the Knight mixed up a line. Not sure exactly what it was supposed to be or who flubbed, but they worked it right in to the dialogue, correcting the other one, saying something like "that was supposed to be MY line". I was hoping for INVISIBLE but it was an Oscar Mayer Bologna bit instead. the flub worked out fine, but SO GLAD it wasn't Clay, who would likely be critiqued publicly for one flub.

I wasn't able - AGAIN - to go to the side door, so can't give any report about that.

My next ticket isn't til closing night, but I daresay I need to find a way to get there as feb-march-april's an awfully long stretch!!

For those of you who are still on the board...I would like to ask for you to say a little prayer for me tomorrow morning as I am having a complete body bone scan...I went last week for an MRI of my left arm ,due to so much pain , and the Dr. says  I have a damaged rotor cuff, but he is concerned because he sees a growth of some kind on the bone...He said, I'm not saying by any means that its cancer, but we need to see whats there... so hopefully it will be a cyst or bone spurs...but I would appreciate your prayers, as I'm a little anxious about it.   Thanks!!!!

Aiken is religious himself and attended Southern Baptist church as a child. “I went back last October with my mom for the first time in five years, and it was very uncomfortable because there was people who didn’t listen to what was going on; they just stared at me the entire time. I was like, This is chah-urch, people! This is God’s house, not a meet and greet!” He sounds very much like Dustin Hoffman as Tootsie. “But I’m in New York now. If I can find a church and sneak in, it’s definitely a goal of mine. I definitely want to get back to it, even though you don’t have to go to church to be a good Christian. That’s just not the case. You don’t have to go to temple to be a good … you know … what’s the noun?” He’s kidding. Sort of.

I have to wonder if Clay Aiken is prepared for New York City. It’s not that he’s stupid. He’s actually well-informed, really into the elections (sad that Joe Biden dropped out; Aiken has become a Democrat), and quite the impressive little charity worker. Before Idol, Aiken was a special-ed teacher and, frustrated by the failure of his beloved YMCA to take special-needs cases in its summer camps, he has since started his own foundation for disabled youth. “And I visit middle schools after I go to Uganda or wherever with UNICEF, but I rarely say, ‘Donate.’ I usually say, ‘Read about what’s going on in the world! There’s a war going on for twenty years in Uganda!’ The media doesn’t talk about this because they’re more concerned with Paris and Britney and … ”

“Hell-o! Mah God. What really freaks me out is now the kids who are growing up, if they do watch the news, it doesn’t have anything to do with the world, so what’s gonna happen? Is any kid gonna wanna be involved in public affairs?”

Surely he must have needs.“Ah think maybe I don’t! I mean, not really. I’ve just kind of shut it off, maybe. Is that bad?”

No, he’s not stupid, but playing the hick dummy is definitely part of his shtick. “All the people are so nice.… They can prob’ly tell I’m not very bright,” he says of his new castmates at lunch the day after the photo shoot and follows it up with his showy southern guffaw. But he’s actually perfectly sharp and also perfectly normal-looking: Sitting on a red banquette at Sardi’s, Aiken is not fat but not thin, strawberry blond, freckled, sporting your basic face. His thing, though, since he came into the public eye, has been to proclaim his homeliness. When he was on Idol, he prophylactically drew attention to his big ears, shrewdly beating the evil Simon Cowell to the punch. Here’s how Aiken explains it in his book: “I said it directly: ‘I know I look weird; I don’t care.’ So what did Simon say that night? He said, ‘You know what, you may not look like a pop star, but I think that’s what makes you so special.’ Gotcha!”

But New York’s is not a culture that smiles on false humility or unprocessed self-loathing. And this is the angle Aiken has been working for decades. “Ahm kinda nerdy,” he declares. “I’m not cool, I’m nerdy.” This is absolutely central to his self-conception—or his marketing strategy, which at this point may be indistinguishable. He uses the words dork and geek and nerd more in one hour than most people do in a year.

(They voted for him.) “Watch out,” says the guy at the box office who hands me my tickets for Spamalot. “Those Clay Aiken fans are insane. They scream like teenagers, but they’re middle-aged women!” Everyone manages to keep her underwear on during the performance I see, but they do make a joyful noise every time Aiken appears onstage in the role originated by David Hyde Pierce.

In a Broadway musical, Aiken is perfect—he can throw that cheesy, octave-spanning man-voice of his around all he wants and hit all those honky gospel notes. It sounds great! He can slowly, slowly raise his arms in the air as he holds a note for 45 minutes. He can make his corny, cartoony facial expressions, and onstage, they’re utterly appropriate. Also, musical theater takes place in a land only slightly more erotically charged than Smurf Village, so here Aiken’s suppressed, indeterminate sexuality seems logical, usual, male. And he doesn’t seem hick. Partly because the twang is replaced by an equally theatrical Cockney and partly because he’s in a funny show. (The theme of his big number is “You won’t succeed on Broadway if you don’t have any Jews.”) Every joke gets a roar. “When I’m up here onstage, I’ll be the idol of my age,” he sings, and the women go crazy. You can almost feel them sucked toward him by some unholy mix of maternal yearning and abject horniness.

Us. We. He uses those words like one of those aggressively married women. But then he is married—to his brand, his team of staff, his celebrity, self-promotion. That’s what he was trying to tell me: He’s promosexual. And in New York City, that’s not so unusual. Perhaps Clay Aiken will fit right in.

I try my best not to let anything embarrass me on stage. I find that when I mess up (and that’s plenty) or when something goes wrong, it’s far more entertaining to point it out and laugh at it myself. I don’t think any audience expects me to be perfect. And, I suppose years of being picked on as a teenager (and, heck, as an adult) taught me that you’re better off to laugh at yourself before someone else has a chance to.

So IMHO he DOES do it that way to ward off the bullies or to pre-empt them. I KNEW this was why he does it, and it is a defense mechanism that is difficult to let go when you feel as if it protects you somewhat.

I don't have time right now to read everyone's post but I agree with Sunny totally.  When I read that article late last night it was apparent that the writer had a strong agenda.  The article really seemed more about her than him.  How dare she use her amateur psychoanalysis on him in print!

Well, for one thing Clay and Ron Paul are definitely not on the same page politically!  (Clay is a Democrat and Ron Paul is a ultra-conservative Republican (actually he's a Libertarian) running for the GOP nomination.

The only comparison I could possibly come up with without having read the article is that Ron Paul has a "cult following" just like some people accuse Clay of having.  I'll be interested to read this article....

Some will be so over the top in their praise and/or criticism that you'll wonder if they are for real. They aren't. Some will claim to be Clay's friends or to know him from before he was famous. Some will claim to be ex lovers (of all genders) and some will say he fathered their babies and some will even claim that he is a Republican, he isn't. Some will attack the author for her activist gay agenda and some will kiss her feet for her activist gay agenda.

The famously private Clay not only admits he isn't dating anyone, he also claims to not have carnal matters on his mind right now. “I just don’t have an interest in… any of that at all,” the Spamalot star explains. “I’d rather focus on one thing and do that when I can devote time to it, and right now, I just don’t have any desire.”

And when it comes to him having those very human "urges," Aiken claims he's immune. “I don’t! I mean, not really. I’ve just kind of shut it off, maybe. Is that bad?”

But OK! has confirmed that the singer has dated at least one person in the past six months — and that there isn't anything wrong with the Idol alum's sex drive. The source tells OK! that Clay met a special someone who he dated a handful of times last summer when visiting Los Angeles.

The source also reveals to OK! that Clay was so taken with this particular person, he offered to fly them to his home in North Carolina, and was making plans for the two of them to then drive across the country in Aiken's car.

try my best not to let anything embarrass me on stage. I find that when I mess up (and that’s plenty) or when something goes wrong, it’s far more entertaining to point it out and laugh at it myself. I don’t think any audience expects me to be perfect. And, I suppose years of being picked on as a teenager (and, heck, as an adult) taught me that you’re better off to laugh at yourself before someone else has a chance to.

Yes she had an agenda.. It was an awful one . The article portrayed a very negative  picture of CLAY, and again of his fans. Sunny broke it down  so ably by the most offending lines already. I also am so very sick of the way we as fans are portrayed.

Yes we are active responders to any arrows and slings shot at CLAY... We are the BABY BOOMER generation who were taught to be thinkers, sayers, doers and activists. We are highly educated and much more aware ,sophisticated, informed and  than the generations before us..and some might say after us as well!!..

We have lived through and perhaps  participated in a  social/ political era that has virtually revolutionized our society through  tremendous changes  in civil rights, role of women,technology, music, culture...

WE ARE NOT STUPID....We ARE NOT CARTOONS...  I am so sick and tired of our ludicrous  depiction by  all these ignorant little  pseudo intellectual people...

Many of us after burning our bras years ago.. (Where DID I put that thing???) have laid down our swords and shields   to raise our families,  pay our motgages, take care of parents
and live our lives...  We seemed to have been reawakened  by this Clay fandom in a most interesting way .We  are now enjoying his music, supporting his career, RESPONDING AS ACTIVISTS to bashers with the same love of life, energy and activist enthusiasm we did just 40 years ago..(40??OY!!) as we tried to make a difference in the world..

No, really. Referring to children as "cases," and saying someone is "quite the little charity worker"? How does that sound to anyone with an active brain? I truly think a lot of people reading probably shuddered, rolled their eyes, or at least shook their heads at her choice of phrasing.

Ariel Levy had an agenda. She wanted to bring attention to the fact that she believes Clay to be a repressed gay man who cannot admit even to himself that he is gay. So maybe when she wrote that NYC was going to crack him open like an egg, she meant to say that by moving to NYC, being on Broadway, and doing a play like Spamalot, which mocks priests and ends in a gay wedding, that he has unconsciously placed himself in a situation that will eventually break his protective shell to reveal what is truly inside. And when the shell will be cracked and his gayness revealed to himself and the world, then it will be cool to love Clay Aiken in spite of his sick, middle-aged female fans who lust after him in despicable, vile ways. Because when gays and straight people lust, it’s a perfectly natural thing of beauty, except if they are straight, middle-aged females; then it’s down right disgusting and yucky and sick and abnormal.

So… I’m thinking that it’s very interesting that she identifies herself as a lesbian feminist and yet seems to unconsciously still be under the influence of our society’s rampant ageism and misogyny. I will pray for her. *g* I will pray that someone or something eventually cracks her shell, so that the self-loathing she is inflicted with can be, at last, washed out in the Great Revealed Cleansing Yolk of Life. And she will be free at last.

About the other things she calls out, IMO, she is on target, although she didn’t have to bee so snooty about it.

Maybe Clayton needs to dissociate himself from Clay Aiken, the public persona, in order to remain sane, which is why he talks of himself in the plural. You know, like, “Me and Clay.” But he cannot do it to such an extent as to create a real dissonance between Clayton and Clay Aiken. Clayton is no hick. He is shrewd and mad-talented. He has no reason to hide himself behind a persona that doesn’t reflect who he really is. He overplays the “pumpkin” persona for whatever reason, but it’s just not him. It may be part of him, but I don’t believe that it is as big a part as he wants the public to believe. It’s a defensive tool that probably had its use at some point, but at this point in his life, to keep using it will hurt his career and, therefore, him.

If that shtick gets on the nerves of so many of his most devoted fans (I include myself in that group), you can just imagine how it affects the regular people out there, and particularly the guys.

To me, the Clay I know and the Clay that too often shows up on my TV are very different people. I feel an uncomfortable dissonance every time. I’m always wishing he could just be on TV as he is in concert, his posts, his other public/charitable appearances, or his book. His “I am an uncool hick” shtick last summer during the tour was not really self-deprecating. It was funny because it was clever humor. He was telling us that if he has to be “too cool for school” and vulgar to be considered “cool,” then he would rather pass. His running gag during the summer was a satire of the sad state of the music industry today and of our society. It was damn smart. That’s the Clay Aiken I wouldn’t mind seeing on TV. But instead, he goes too far and it comes out as false humility and/or a lack of sophistication way too often. Except with Jimmy Kimmel. With Jimmy, he is more himself than with anybody else on TV. Sometimes, a good interviewer in print, on the radio, or the TV manages to bring him out, but it’s too rare and it is being washed away in a sea of self-deprecating quotes, mediocrity and lazy journalism.

Right now, that article is being quoted by others, and even though Ariel Levy clearly states when she quotes from his book, those passages are being reported as if he just said them to her. It’s maddening.

Diva, I completely get what you said in your posts about this article, and I agree with it. I understand what you mean by the “dark side” or the “shadow”; however, if that Jungian jargon is familiar to you and me and quite a few others here, it is still down right obscure to many people. It’s kind of like when Skybar explains Clay’s astrological chart to us. She is so used to the jargon that she forgets that most of us are completely clueless about astrology. Someone has to remind her that she needs to put it in lay language. Thanks to the ones who asked last week, I now understand that having “Mercury in retrograde” in your planet (or something like that *g*) means that all kind of shit is going to happen to you. Communication will be murky. See, I know that Mercury/Hermes is the god (energy) of communication, the link between the Divine, the Self, and our conscious us; but mythology is not astrology and I have no idea what she means if she doesn’t translate it for us.

I think many people understand expressions like “dark side” or “shadow” as the shameful, evil side of us that we DO need to repress all the time. And… everybody knows, or should know, that Clay has no shameful and evil side. *g*

So I think that we really need to drive home the point, as you started doing, Diva, when you said that “sometimes, our shadow can be our ‘gold’ the very best within us,” that our real self, the person that we would have been if our parents, teachers and society hadn’t taught us to repress much of it is what “the shadow” is. Some of what we repressed was for the best. We need to repress selfish or violent urges to be part of a family and society. Many of our qualities and talents, however, have been repressed not because they were bad, but because they threatened our family/society, for whatever reason. Maybe because those parts of themselves had also been suffocated.

My mom is still angry at me for having gotten a formal education. “Who the hell do you think you are?” she told me in these exact words last time I saw her. Her entire face was distorted with pure rage when I told her that I was accepted in graduate school. “Do you think you are smarter than us? We are not stupid you know! I don’t understand how you could do so well at school, because when you were younger, there were no indications that you were smart or brilliant in any way. I guess what they say about American schools is correct. It’s just so much easier over there. Anybody can get degrees. They just hand them over to you.”

“Well, okay Mom. Oh, look the sun is out in full force today!” That’s the kind of answers I give her. No point telling her that I spent my youth hiding my intellect because any sign of intelligence in my family was smacked down with a brick. Bringing good grades at home was bad because “you’re just trying to show off and demean your poor brother who is not doing well in school.” Her mother did the same thing to her, and she never got over it. I can’t blame her; I know how many years it took and how hard it was to get over it myself. I’m the only one in my family from my generation and every generations before mine to have even gotten a high school diploma. My parents weren’t dumb, just traumatized.

That was part of my shadow. I had repressed my intellect to fit into my family. I had to mine it and bring it back to the surface, and it took a hell of a lot of work. It was sheer terror most of the time to do it. But I also needed to recognize and accept even the parts of me that I need to keep under lock. Doing so makes it easier for me not to remain a victim (not as often anyway… that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. *g*) of those impulses, because I do not understand or recognize them and, consequently, cannot control them.

So my point, and Diva’s point, is that Clay needs to bring back his real self to the surface--warts and golden qualities--so that he can be free of the formers' yoke and fully benefit from the latters. And, yes, the right kind of therapy could help him do that. But, as Skybar mentioned, very few young males are ready to do that kind of work on themselves. Hopefully, he will find an another way to do it without hurting himself too much. In some ways, Ariel Levy is right, because if we refuse, or cannot bring those good parts of our “shadow” to the light, we unconsciously place ourselves in situations that will do it for us. If we listen to ourselves, we learn and grow; otherwise, we keep being hit over the head and bruised until we get it. Just maybe Levin is clueless as to what it is that Clay is working out. She thinks she knows, but she could be blinded by her own “shadow stuff.”

I think he just wasn't about to get into details of his personal life with this chick. I think he felt (rightly) that he owed her no explanation. And him asking, "Is that bad?" at the end sounded to me like he was absolutely messing with her.

She was just too dense to realize it.

What I   do not understand is when anyother celeb says they are too busy for a love life it is just accepted as said and we move on  Carrie and Kelly included on this because I know they have commented on the same. There are times when any of us  are just too busy to even think about dating, or having time to MERGE so to speak. No need to call any specialists at that one. Give the poor guy a break, he does shows in the evening, sometimes afternoon, he does have to sleep, eat and other assorted things I am sure, I can understand that he does not have time for a relationship or that it would be fair to be in one where he could devote sometime to her.

Here's another post by Claymate952 at RHT regarding the Clay mention on the Imus show.

I happened to be in the car very early this a.m. and Imus in the Morning was on the radio. He mentioned that his office manager went to see Spamalot last night and she said the show was great. Said that Clay Aiken was in it and he was great, really funny.

Then he said to the news guy, something like, "Did you think Clay Aiken would be funny?" and the news guy said, "Uh, no." Then they moved to a different topic.

He has a huge audience so it was a good mention even though the final comment took away from it a little bit.

Something I just remembered that I didn't post from when I saw the show on 1/20. When my mom was in line to get the program, lots of people were buying the soundtrack. The woman selling the merchandise kept saying "Clay's not on there", and the people all said that they knew that. I don't remember what my mom said to the woman, but in response she said that she has to let everyone know that Clay is not on the CD, and that it's the original cast. She then said that the original cast was great, but the current cast is absolutely the best that she has ever seen do the show.

Thanks for the link. I just downloaded the show, and if people are interested I can cap the mention and get it into the vault, although I won't be able to do it until late afternoon. The Clay mention comes in at about 56 minutes into the show. Imus' office assistant or manager went to the show, but the one who talked about Clay on air was Imus. Imus was talking to some other guy and said that Julie (Canford? Camford?, something like that) who runs everything in the office went to see Spamalot with Clay Aiken and said it is great, and HE is great and funny. The other guy sounded somewhat surprised at first, going "really?" and "no kidding," but finally said "that's terrific." It was a very short mention, just about 20 seconds, but it I thought it was a very good mention from a very unexpected source.

Well I'm getting pretty good at watching David Hyde Pierce on youtube as Sir Robin and substituting Clay's face for his and watching over and over, so ya I've been to several shows too. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.   :shappy

The Case Foundation and Parade Magazine have presented an incredible opportunity to non-profit organizations to not only reach out to friends and family and get them involved in what we are passionate about, but also to maximize the effect of our monetary donations.  America’s Giving Challenge will conclude on January 31 at 3pm EST.  Only 3 Days Left!!!  The four US-based charities that receive the most donations ($10 minimum) will receive a $50,000 grant from the Case Foundation.  The winners will also be featured in Parade Magazine which has a weekly readership of 72 million people!

The good news is that we have had over 1000 donations and the almost $14,000 that we will receive through the generous support will fund at least one camp that will open its doors to all children and give them the opportunity to experience all that life has to offer.  The bad news is that after a week of being in fourth place and thus in the running for the winning grant, we have been passed and are sitting in fifth—71 donations behind as I write this.  We must be in the top 4 to receive the additional $50,000!

Why is it important that not only you but also your friends and family participate?  You can make a difference in the life of a child like Adam who had been kicked out of every program he had ever attended until he came to a Let’s ALL Play program where the extra staff gave him the attention he had been craving.  He has now had 4 successful summers in our programs as well as seeing marked improvement in his school performance.  You could open a door for a Lee who came to his first summer with almost no verbal or social skills.  You can now find him playing kickball and talking at lunch with all his new friends.

So how can you help?

1.       Make sure you’ve donated.  There is no need to delay.  Again, the deadline is this Thursday, January 31 at 3pm EST. I think that Clay has the best “big” number of the show. And sitting front row center last night...well, the Jewish dance sequence nearly killed me. I thought he did a great job on his big number when I saw him opening night, but I felt like I could see the wheels turning in his head as he thought through the sequence of steps. The concentration on his face and his physical effort was very visible to me.

It appears that he’s totally assimilated the pieces and now it all just flows. So he gets up from the piano, faces the audience and he is stunning. He raises his arms and stomps down that size 13 1/2....and my God he is HUGE. He IS this dance. He drops to his knees, flings out that leg and slides himself forward... and then again....his head and shoulders are erect...and again he slides...closer....his eyes are DIAMONDS...and again ......he's intense....sleek and ferocious .... closer.... he’s nearly right on top of us.......

I think that’s when I passed out....because the next thing I know, he’s standing on top of the piano and I need a cigarette.
