I got an email from someone (not a Claymaniac!) that was POd because she thought the symphonic performances were an actual CA Christmas tour.  I think he's actually only going to sing a few songs during the second half of each concert, and she was not happy about that.

Fans like to hear big songs, says Aiken, Thats what people have come to expect from us. I like big songs as well, but on this album, we also wanted to choose songs that expressed different parts of my voice.

To be sure, Partons peppy Here You Come Again, done on A THOUSAND DIFFERENT WAYS as a ballad, shows off a softer, more vulnerable Aiken. I have always liked that song, he says, but I had never sung it before. Foster promised to come up with an arrangement that would suit Aikens voiceand she did. Its truly my favorite song on the album, says the singer.

I did feel a bit anxious about 'Because You Loved Me,'" the singer offers, "not only because of Celine, but also because the original was produced by David Foster, one of the greatest producers of all time.David has heard our version, and so has Diane Warren, who wrote the song. They both approve of what weve done, and that makes me happy. (Aikens version of Because You Loved Me was produced by Eman. Other producers on the album include John Fields, Andreas Carlsson & Samuel Waermo, Adam Anders, and Russ Irwin & Charles Pettus.)

If any song made Aiken nervous, it was Adamss Everything I Do (I Do It For You). That gravelly voice is so well-known, says Aiken about Adamss iconic rasp, I didnt know if I could do the song justice. With a lovely, restrained vocaland an arrangement with a lilting Celtic feelAikens version is an undeniable highpoint of the new disc; its one of the most romantic songs the singer has ever sung.

The new songs also give Aiken the opportunity to show off his emotional growth, with each track highlighting a different facet of his personality. Everything I Have (written by Jeremy Bose) brings to mind the poignancy of an Art Garfunkel performance. The songs subtle piano and string arrangement allows Aikens naked voice to express the delicious ache of love. Every woman I have played that for absolutely loves it, says the singer. I have people telling me they want to play it at their wedding. A Thousand Days (written by Christian Leuzzi, Aldo Nova & Emanual Olsson) and These Open Arms (written by Jon Bon Jovi & Desmond Childs) are both classic Aiken, with big dramatic vocals and rousing, take-no-prisoners choruses. The fourth new track Lonely No More has a lighter, more playful pop sensibilityand the song also represents Aikens first songwriting credit (along with writers Andreas Carlson, Samuel Waermo, and Mimmi Waermo.)

Perhaps the most astonishing artistic departure for Aiken was the decision to cover the Mr. Mister hit Broken Wings as an ethereal, New Age-like track. With an otherworldly spoken word vocal by poet Erin Taylor, the song is a spectacular tour-de-force. We didnt know if it would work. We took a chance, and Im so happy with how it came out.

This new post basically gives guidelines for fans who are going -- Clay will sign one item per person. Fans do not have to buy the CD to get one signed--they can bring their own purchased elsewhere, though purchases there are encouraged. They can take pics of Clay, but he will not pose with them for pics. And the usual "say your piece, keep it short, and move on quickly" thing. Sounds like they think all who come will be able to have their item signed.

Okay, so we got see the CD! Like just see it. Jaymes held it up, the back has the picture of Clay on the ledge.
Jaymes said Clay was inside when the picture was taken, but that the glass door was actually open.
She said that this was Clay's personal copy... the CD was actually not in the package... the poster inside is of the new pic of Clay looking down... looks like it is photoshopped to have a blackish brown silk like background.
Jaymes said her two favorite songs are: "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" and "Lonely No More" (asked about the writing, she said Clay is an amazing lyricist, but that she was not in the room during the writing so can't say how much he contributed but a good amount)


Oh yeah, and ABC was there filming and interviewing.. .to correspond with GMA and *drumroll please* PRIMETIME!!

So yeah, more news when it comes.

After reading some of the boards, I really hope that Clay checks in on some of the CD comments today.  The fans are toast.  Get out the buttah!  They are all crying at the Clayboard (too cute). Tears of glee.  Stock market shares in Kleenex are sure to go up this month compliments of the fandom.  In essence, this has been a really GREAT Clay week.  The best is yet to come.  I think Clay has a massive hit on his hands with ATDW.  Even some of the groaners....seem to be changing their tune.  If one can believe it.  That ought to teach them a little something about first impressions and jumping the "cover" gun.   :bang

I've had several bouts with kidney stones. The last time the stone was so big it wouldn't pass so they had to blast it out! The nurse told me the general consenus is Kidney Stone pain is worse than childbirth pains. Now, I can't attest to that - my kids are adopted, BUT I can certainly attest to the terrible pain of kidney stones!

Does your papa drink water from the tap or bottled water? I've found since I stopped drinking city water and started drinking filtered bottled water, my kidney stone problem has disappeared. I guess there's alot of fine minerals in tap water that can build up and cause the stone.

Morphine - what's amazing to me about morphine is that it's such an old old drug. It was discovered I think back during WWI treating the wounded on the battlefield. Yet here it is in 2006 still one of the most effective pain killers around.

The Charlotte Symphony has announced that "American Idol" Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken will perform a Christmas concert with the symphony on Dec. 22. The concert will take place at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Ticket information is forthcoming.

I'm off today...doctor's visits...I had a scare during just my second day of teaching last week  ...the same day that district officials learned that the legal matter I've initiated regarding disability accommodations isn' t going away anytime soon...coincidentally         there were a stream of visitors to my 'new' classroom that day...my lawyer was out of town...I was feeling much personal angst    ...(the children are darling...thank the good lord...) and without warning, it seemed like the 'windshield' of my right eye was a bit awash in blood...I alerted a child to look and see if outwardly my eye was red...it was not...and I didn't lose speech or vision right then and there...but I've had a loss of vision over the summer it seems  ...anyway, I'm up to my 'eyeballs' in tests...I've got a CAT scan ahead of me...hopefully I'll feel relief upon learning the results.

Anyway.. need to share..I have a 25 yr old  student who is trying school for the 2nd time round.. She has 2 kids now.. One of the roles I play this year is "life coach and motivator!! as well as teacher..

She came up to me at the end of the session to tell me she really thinks she will stay with it and I was one of the most interesting teachers she ever had..

My lecture was abound self motivation...goal setting.. Finding  the passion in your life and following it...no matter what others think..

DEANNA, I agree with you that in all likelihood this new CD will have "the legs" to sell over a long period of time.  This time around I will be much more comfortable in giving ATDW to  friends, relatives (even my 84-year-old mother), my manicurist, my cleaning lady, etc. etc as Christmas gifts.   My gut feeling is that ATDW will become a classic for years to come, and that the wide acceptance of this CD will pave the way for the popularity of future releases up the road.   Think Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Harry Connick Jr. ....I truly believe Clay will someday join this elite group of classic singers!

... I just finished watching Dancing with the Stars and at the very end of the show when everyone was waving good bye the background music came on and I swear to god it sounded like Clay's voice. The song was not familiar but if it's wasn't Clay there is someone who sings like Clay.

Track By Track Breakdown (New Original Tracks Only):

2. Lonely No More - The first new original track from Clay to appear on this album. While it starts off a bit slow and soft the song does pick up quickly. An extremely well crafted track and why shouldn't it be after all it was written by 4 people which is something you don't see a lot of these days. A straight forward song that is backed by acoustic guitars, though to some will be hard to pick out but they are there. In true Clay form he doesn't over power the soft mood being portrayed. His vocals have changed, but for the better. To me he sounds a bit more involved in the song then previous works. While not the best song he's done, it is certainly one of his finest.

3. Without You - Another soft ballad type track from Clay. There's a theme to this point as far as new songs go, their slower and show the true heart and emotional strength that Clay has. There's a hint of pop here but overshadowing that is the use of orchestra instruments backing Aiken all the way. This is also the first track where you can hear Clay's full vocal range. As soon as he hits the high notes there's no question that this kid has the vocal range to reach heaven and beyond. The only thing I didn't care for was the ending of the song, the use of a fade wasn't needed.

7. A Thousand Days - Now I was shocked when I heard this version as the first time I heard this song it wasn't this polished. All the additions from the smoother transitional areas to the addition of violins and other orchestra instruments have allowed this song to grow. If you've heard the radio version of this song get ready for a shock because it's completely different and much more laid back which fits the overall design of this album. There's no doubt in my mind that this is one of, if not the finest song Clay has recorded in his already amazing career.

11. These Open Arms - Is this a new Clay song? No it's not, this is a cover of a Bon Jovi song though some may not know. I read many websites & press releases that are claiming this is a brand new original song. Their information is incorrect, this is a cover but done very well. Clay makes this song his own by really slowing the song down. Not at all like the original version and that's a great thing. It seems that Bon Jovi is allowing some of his material to be redone by American Idol contestants. Clay isn't the first to cover a Jovi song, Bo Bice covered Jovi on his debut album as well. I wanted to mention this song here because others have had misinformation about it's origin.

13. Everything I Have - I got a sense that this song was a lost Chicago/Peter Cetera song. Everything seemed as if it was a cover tune but in fact it's a newly penned Clay original. Major piano movements throughout the song really drawing the listener in was a plus. Aiken's vocal range here doesn't really open up as much as I would have liked but he holds true to the overall style and emotional sense that pours out from the song making his performance unforgettable.

Where do I begin here? I suppose I should start with the cover songs. If you want to make a great covers album the songs you cover have to be changed, it's that simple. If you just cover the song in the same vain as the original version then what was the reason for releasing your disc? Clay has done a brilliant job not only covering some very difficult songs but also making them his own. That is another thing that is hard to pull off though Clay has managed to do it. Every song covered (Minus The Bon Jovi Track) was popular at one point in time yet Clay not only does the original version justice but truly enhances the original vibes which made the songs popular in the first place. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. In my initial reaction I mentioned that the best reinvented track was "Because You Loved Me." I still believe that's the best reinvented track on the disc because he left the original vibe in tact but he changed the overall rhythm of the song allowing the material to breathe new life. There's really nothing more I can say about the cover tracks, basically as a listener you have to decide weather or not he managed to capture you through these songs. Personally I find these songs to be a real breath of fresh air because there's been a ton of cover discs that have been released in the past 2 years and frankly there's only been 2 or 3 that have really been done well. This album is in fact one of the better cover discs because of how Clay was able to reinvent the original songs.

Now to focus on what people really want to know about. How are the original songs? Honestly there was only 1 issue and that was on 1 song. The use of a fade at the end of the track was simply not needed why do I say that? Let me put it this way, when you go to a concert do the artists use fades at the end of their songs? I didn't think so. While I understand the use of a fade on a studio release, it just wasn't needed here. It's obvious Clay is going to sing these new songs live and frankly it should have had a real ending rather then the fade. Are the new songs any good? I'll go one better, these songs are going to set the tone as to how Clay's career goes. I firmly believe that if he sticks with this soft blend of material and intertwines a few pop tracks he'll be one of the most successful singers in music history. There are very few mainstream musicians that capture me the way Clay does. He's a musician that when there's word of new material on the way people go crazy, that's a good thing. With songs like Without You & A Thousand Days Clay has opened the door to greatness. Some might be put off by this album's soft tones and if that's the case your not following what Clay is trying to accomplish. This disc is all about not only reliving the past but reviving it. Clay has set a course toward the future and with time I think fans of all genres will notice this release for it's original material as well as the reinvented cover tunes.

This is a career setting album for Clay but not his best, as his best is still to come. You could hear throughout this release how completely in love he is with the classic material and as a listener it's nice to hear an artist actually appreciate the material being put forth.  

Hopefully with the right push from his label and fans this disc will see success not only in sales but in terms of overall play. I am hoping some of these songs show up on Movie/TV soundtracks.

The only thing missing was 1 more original song. I say that because I'm sure some fans were looking for a full pop album from Clay. There are hints of pop throughout the disc on the cover tracks that should keep those fans happy but I do see the point as some are looking for something that was a bit more familiar.

Overall this is a brilliantly done album that one can sit back, listen to and just drift away. Clay is much more then just some kid from a realty show, he's a musician in every sense of the word. The best is still to come and what is scary is that this disc is so good how can he possibly top it?

With a year to go before it even touches the water, the Navy's amphibious assault ship USS New York has already made history. It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

USS New York is about 45 percent complete and should be ready for launch in mid-2007. Katrina disrupted construction when it pounded the Gulf Coast last summer, but the 684-foot vessel escaped serious damage, and workers were back at the yard near New Orleans two weeks after the storm.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, La., to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up."

"It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The 12 songs on "FutureSex/LoveSounds" roll together on the CD like a special club mix. That makes for a perfect soundtrack for a nightclub, but each song taken individually sounds out of context. Perhaps that's why "SexyBack," featuring Timbaland, doesn't necessarily work as a single.
The album kicks off with the title track, which possesses a bass line similar to Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust." With its distorted pre-chorus vocals, the track sounds like a dizzying fairground.
Special guests abound on "FutureSex/LoveSounds." Timbaland--who produced and sang bass on "Cry Me a River" from "Justified"--returns as a singer on "SexyBack." Rapper T.I. appears on the stomping "My Love." Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am sings on "Damn Girl." Finally, unlikely Oscar winners Three 6 Mafia let loose on "Chop Me Up."
But the special guests do not help heal the monotonous nature of the album, which relies on musical textures rather than strong tunes to hook the listeners in. For example, "LoveStoned" builds up with a pre-chorus that never goes anywhere.
A Timberlake release would not be complete without his deft beatboxing skills, found on songs like "My Love" and "LoveStoned." It's impressive but doesn't hold the album together.

Appointees Sworn In to Serve on President’s Committee

Members of the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities (PCPID), appointed recently by President George W. Bush, were sworn in today by HHS Assistant Secretary for Children and Families Wade F. Horn, nonameblogger.D.

“By appointing these individuals, President Bush is strengthening the care, attention and services for people with intellectual disabilities,” Horn said. “These men and women will help achieve the goals of the Bush Administration to help citizens with intellectual disabilities live full, happy and productive lives.”

The appointments to the PCPID are as follows:

Clay Aiken of Raleigh, North Carolina: Recording artist Clay Aiken is also the founder of the Bubel/Aiken Foundation, an organization that promotes and funds educational and recreational programs for children with special needs.
