Clay blogs.....I am at a loss for words.  They were recording in the summer.  We heard he had 4 or 5 albums worth of material recorded.  So, they scrap it all, and go back into the studio to record songs of other generations with a fresh spin on them, and a few new songs.   What happend to everything else?   They must have REALLY liked the response to the JBT.   And, it's extremely apparent that certain posters from other boards who "predicted" what would be on this CD must be physic.  :hypno.... just their opinions.  Yeah right.

I'm happy for the blog, but I'm sort of disappointed...had hoped for majority of new and some covers...sigh  oh well, at least it's a new CD.  I fear this won't bode well for getting new fans, but you never know 'til it happens.  Time will tell.

Jayne - I certainly share your sentiments.

Although, I can't help but wonder if maybe this will help to gain new fans. There are a lot of young people who might not know the cover songs and with a new spin on them .... who knows?! I think it will depend on where they market the album (AC, HotAC, Top40). As long as they sell it (and sell it well) to that last two, I really think he could gain some new fans out of this. It's obvious that Clay can sing anything (except maybe hip hop :lol), so maybe even those who do know the originals will like his version better.

I'm not completely sold on the idea yet..... but who knows! My question is - What are they going to release to radio? Strictly the covers or some of the new stuff too? :dunno

I read the new blog. I agree with Jayne..sort of left me feeling ...."deflated" almost. Not that I am not excited about what he is doing..and I am sure the voice will sing the heck out of the songs..BUT..look at who is doing covers today. THOSE THAT ARE ESTABLISHED. "Oldies" in the business, shall we say. I don't know/ think that Clay is as established as Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow. Just saying. I know there are covers on a lot of CDs out there today..a few songs made fresh, not whole CDs of them from new and up and coming artists, unless you are a Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra song coverer..

I really was hoping to hear what CLAY was all about..but I guess this IS what CLAY is all about. Or Clive and Clay can't figure out WHERE he belongs..so they dip back into "easy" songs?? NOT that I think the songs are easy..as Clay is obviously finding out by changing this CD in mid stream but just not new. I have to disagree that songs aren't written as well "these days". Listen to Kelly's songs. Awesome lyrics and sound. Very fresh and new. I really like them. I guess I was hoping for Clay fresh and new.

Who knows. He mentions there are some new "gems"..maybe there are more new ones than covers. Maybe he has found his own "Whitney Houston type" song~  one that will always be associated to her and only her and no one can sing it better~...maybe Clay has a couple of those on this CD.

I just don't want him perceived as the National Wedding Singer....The Perpetual "American Idol" who didn't win wanna be... I DON'T perceive him that way but I can hear the "critics" now and I also don't expect many 13-18 year olds buying up yesterdays sounds...at least not the majority of them looking to form their own generational sound, and raving over the" New OLD Music".

I do not think it is bad for him..it is just different than what I was hoping for from him.

Yes, I liked the JukeBox Tour and Clays rendition of the songs..but I loved the Solo Clay Tour where he sang and performed his own music, as well as some covers and put the Clay Spin on them.  I hope the music industry accepts this as another stepping stone to his long career and his fabulous voice and doesn't dog on him, that's all. Hmmm..time will tell whenever we get this CD on the store shelves.  I just don't want to see Clay selling as "Only offered on TV"  for his future sales. I hope his music stays on the forefront..in the mainstream...top of the charts kind of stuff! He has the potential and the talent and most definately the voice! I will buy his CDs wherever they are offered and whatever genre he choses..but for longevity of sales, I hope he finds his place.

Singing Oldies could be his place.

You know Linds you're right, young people probably don't know covers...I guess I just hate to see him doing what so many are doing....falling back on covers!  Perhaps this is happening because new music is el stinko????  Who knows...

I think everyone has a different vision of where Clay belongs. The fans have many ideas; Clay has his; Clive has his, and I think this CD is an attempt to make everyone happy. Clay obviously wasn't happy with a lot of the "new" songs he was recording, and neither was Clive.


Oh yeah! I love that idea!



I don't think any of us want to see/hear of him being perceived this way. Call me crazy, but maybe having Clay cover classic love songs on his second mainstream album is a compliment. It took artists like Manilow and Stewart YEARS of new music and established credibility to reach the point where their labels thought they could sell an album of covers. Clive obviously thinks Clay can sell these covers RIGHT NOW. A blessing in disguise maybe? I don't know the likelihood of that possibility, but it's definitely something to consider.

I trust Clay's instincts. Many laughed or criticized when he did the JBT tour- but it was successful and most of us loved it. He tried something new with JNT 2005- and while there were scathing remarks from some, I think most liked it.

He has never been one to stay in the boundaries of what people think he should do- even on MOAM he barely compromised- and stood up for himself.
If however, the powers that he has to answer to for the CD would not bend over his original effort, or if in fact he was not fully satisfied, then something else had to be done. Covers arent bad- and as Pamela put it once- Clay can sing the Shizznit out of anything. I just hope they are ones we have not yet heard.

And--he DID say there would be new songs, too!

The content doesnt disturb me. What bothers me more is when it will be released, because I would definitely like to go to concerts THIS year!

So- with that said, my BOOBS and I will now return to work- dammit!

Clay has an amazing voice and Clive may have seen an opportunity to use his voice to arrange older songs into something new and better.  I was curious as to whether or not Clay would compromise his voice for radio play, as I feel in a way Kelly did.  I think this CD will be a means to showcase his extraordinarily talented voice, and get radio play without compromising his awe-inspiring vocal talent.

ETA:  It's bewildering that people are already discussing a third CD when this one hasn't even been released yet.  Can they just give this guy a break?

It was great to see a blog last night.  I think it was definately needed! 

I know there are some people who are against covers on the CD.  I think it is going to be a great CD even with part of it being covers.  I would rather see an AWESOME CD with some covers on it than a mediocre CD with all original songs on it (kinda like MOAM).  I'm not sure who was against the new material (Clay or Clive) or if they were both not happy with it but I trust Clay to make the right decision.  He is very good at making each and every song his own and he is great at making little change-ups that help make the song his.  During the last 4 tours I have attended, he has done change-ups which I always LOVE when he does it because it makes the song different.  He has a talent for doing spontaneous change-ups so I'm sure that he is taking his time now to make sure he is making the right changes to make these covers seem like original Clay songs.

I am too tired to write anything new about Clay's blog and the CD news, so I am just bringing over the missive I wrote on another board earlier this morning.

I read Clay's blog this morning and I cannot honestly say I am the least bit excited about this CD being covers of love songs. Actually, the love songs part doesn't bother me because love songs ARE NOT just ballads. Its the covers part. Even though I have been expecting it, I kept thinking that the delays meant maybe they had decided against that. Guess not. There was something about seeing the words in black and white - OH-fficially, that was just depressing.

I have complete confidence that Clay will sing the s--t out of them. I have no doubt he will sing them better than they ever were sung - even by the original artist. But they are covers. He has not been able to shake the "AI runner-up" label and now he will have an entire CD that was the theme of last night's AI? Unfortunately, this will label him as a karaoke singer, especially by critics that already have disdain for him. And what about radio play? Ok, maybe they'll have the original songs on his CD be the singles - or at least the first one. What if it makes people interested in the CD but when they go to buy it they see its a CD of love song covers?

I also didn't think he sounded all that excited in his blog. He sounded almost clinical. I am sure it was meant as a way to thank us for rallying around him - again - and as a way to put our impatient souls to rest - at least for a little while. But to me it had a weary tone. And that made me sad.

I know he probably couldn't have said that he lost his battle with Clive, but I have never been all that convinced there was a battle, per se, with Clive. What if they were never thrilled with the finished product of the CD they recorded last year? They presented it to Clive to see what he thought and he said it was bad (meaning the songs, not the way Clay sang them), except for maybe a handful. Clay could have made a comment like "Yeah, they just don't write songs like they used to!" and told him how great the JBT was and how his fans loved it. So Clive says "Perfect! We'll do all covers!" I am sure Clay's initial reaction would be "NO! That's not what I meant!", but one thing we know about Clay, he doesn't fit a mold. He's an old soul. Maybe he thought about it and then thought he would rather sing great singer songs that were covers than generic original songs. Maybe one reason its taken so long is he got excited about it, but, being the perfectionist he is, had to listen to every love song ever written and find the perfect song and then come up with the perfect arrangement. I think the fact its taking so long also indicates they aren't just taking a bunch of old songs out of the RCA library and recording them, which is good. Anyway, I guess I still think it wasn't Dictator Clive scrapping Clay's fabulous album of original material and forcing Clay to sing love song covers - a.k.a. all ballads. I think there was compromising involved and maybe Clay is loving the songs. He's a SINGER and its true, there aren't a lot of really good songs for really good singers out there.

The idea of David Foster possibly being involved does not make me happy either. I think of him and I think of Josh Groban, Michael Buble and Celine Dion and I want to barf. He takes on that mold and we may never see Rock!Star!Clay! again.   :cry

I just hope they don't market it as Love Song Covers and have him looking like he did on the TV Guide cover so that he will be forever known as Crooner Clay, or the second coming of John Stevens!   :eek

I just have to hold on to the idea that these love songs will NOT be all ballads. Love songs are written for every style of music. I mean I bet you 90% of songs are love songs - love gone right, love gone wrong, etc. I have to hold on to the idea that they will find a way to market this baby without turning him into John Stevens. I have to believe he will somehow not seal himself in the cover box forever. I hope he is aware his audience isn't all old ladies who only want to hear him sing the type of songs he sang on AI and at the very least picks some good rockin love song covers.

Sorry for the rambling. I got very little sleep last night so I was going into work a little late. When I sat down with my cup of tea to read the board and saw Clay blogged, I ran over to the OFC and saw it - the confirmation in black and white that he would indeed be serving us up a CD of love song covers. And it went downhill from there.

And if he's still working on it, I believe IF he is on GMA August 4th it will be to START the promotion of the CD, maybe introduce his new single, for a September release. Oh well, a this point I would rather wait until September when he can take advantage of the new TV season for promotion.

At least he didn't say all ballads all the time!

And at least I know his voice will be amazing.

Give me time and I will be able to rationalize this into being a good thing! I just worry about how this will affect his future........

You know, during the JBT I remember saying to myself that I hope Clay wasn't liking the covers too much or we'll end with an album full!

The CD......I am thrilled to finally have some news, some answers!  Clay seems happy with it so far, I trust Clive is also, so that's good enough for me.  Sure, I would have preferred all original material, but that's not what were getting (this time).  As far as radio play, even if the CD was all new material, there was no guarantee there would be radio play.  We're talking Clay here.  I think he needs radio play, I think he would benefit greatly from it, but I was never ever sure that would happen.  I think whats most important is that it be good, show off his amazing voice, and not be over-produced.  Hopefully, the rest will fall into place.  I am being optomistic!  I don't believe Clay was ever a conformist (am I using the right word here)?  He's always been his own man, and I love him for it.  I am trusting his judgement (and Clive's).  Ladies, buckle your seatbelts.  I think we're in for one hell of a ride!   :purpbana

My sentiments exactly, Lori!!!!  :hugg Frankly, I don't want to have to force myself to love some songs on Clay's upcoming CD;  I must admit that was the case with MOAM (Perfect Day and Shine, for example).  If Michael Buble, Harry Connick Jr, Barry Manilow and Rod Stewart can top the charts with their albums of "covers", why can't Clay???  As far as I'm concerned, he is probably the best song stylist of the 21st century.  It's time that everybody knows it, not just us concert goers!!

Micki, I totally agree with you.  I read it last night a couple of times, and just reread it.  I don't think he sounds the least bit cynical.  It sounds to me like they are taking the time to make sure this album is well worth the wait.   As I said before, I think they are looking for, as Clay said, "songs for singers," not just something that will get airplay and compromise his vocal capabilities, which is what has caused me some concern.  We are going to be getting some new material too, although, it doesn't sound like very much.  Okay now that we know what it is, CAN WE GET IT OUT ALREADY!!!  :lol

Make fun of my choice of words all you want, but what I meant was analytical.  He was explaining it in a very analytical manner.  That is the take I got from it.

I have been busy at work all day, but my mind keeps going to this CD.  I do not agree that every cover Clay has sung is better than the original.  Two that jump off the page at me are "Iris" and "Alone" from the JBT.  I liked his versions (although "Iris" had to grow on me), but I LOVE the Goo Goo Dolls version of "Iris" and I LOVE Hearts' version of "Alone".  ICMYLM is a tie, with maybe a slight edge going to the original Bonnie Raitt version.  I am sure there are others, but those are the ones that struck me.

Another problem I see with this is I don't think he's looking at more obscure covers because he uses the term "greatest love songs", which implies well known love songs.  Also, if he is accurate about the 25 years part, that means we're only working with the 80's and beyond.  Those songs are still getting a lot of radio play.  That means the originals are very familiar to the listening public.  I wish - and hope - that maybe he will choose lesser known covers that maybe are not being played on the radio still.  I also HOPE, HOPE, HOPE, HOPE THEY ARE NOT ALL SAPPY BALLADS!!!!  If he has to do all these love song covers, I want some rockin' ones, some green-eyed soul, maybe something jazzy and/or bluesy.  I want the kind of range we saw at the JBT.  If he has to do covers, I want people to at the very least see that Clay can sing anything - not just sappy ballads.

As for the precious few original songs on the CD, since we are getting so few, I DO NOT want any of the 4 we heard during the JBT.  I want NEW, NEW.  If he ever did do studio recordings of any of the JBT songs, maybe he could offer them for download on the OFC or something.  But most of his fans who have waited patiently for this CD have out of necessity been listening to those 4 songs for a year now.  I don't want the few new songs to be year old songs.

As for a CD title.... I was thinking "At Last" - which is a song I would LOVE him to cover. Although I have never heard it sung by a man, I bet he would KILL on it!  And the title would be most appropriate.

At Last is a great song!  Yes, I just might kill to hear Clay cover that!  For a title, I was thinking "Now and Then"  but, then we 'd have another NAT tour.   :lol

I vote for "Now and Then", Micki!!!  Or how about "Then and Now"?  "(The TAN tour" --- of course that means it would have to be in the summer when we all have tans---not likely at this point)

I'm still not sure anything about the CD is positive - but at least it isn't like yesterday!

Only trouble with "At Last" is Etta James had a CD by that name - and she sings the definitive version of that song, IMO.

But it would be appropriate.

I really do not want the title to sound like the CD has old stuff on it.  "Then and Now" or "Now and Then" sounds like OLD covers and I don't think that's what they're going for if they are only going back 25 years.  Plus, I don't want them to emphasize the cover or the love songs part.  I just want them to emphasize music and let the public pass judgment when they hear it.  I am afraid if the title or the picture or the narrative are too centered on love song covers many in the public will react the same way many in the Clay Nation are reacting and then they won't even want to listen to it.  If there is ANY hope of attracting new fans with this CD (and he really, really needs to), they have to market it as just great music, sung by one of the greatest voices of our time, who also happens  to be hot as sh*t (hey, it can't hurt!  :slick) and that the music is fresh and new.  Just leave out the fact they are mostly covers.  They'll find that out soon enough.  Don't market this with a bias already attached.

And put a sizzling HOT picture of Clay on the cover - one where he looks current, not like an old man.  Make it a picture that might make people stop in their tracks when they see it on the racks in stores.  Many stores have listening centers.  I have more than once picked up a CD to listen to because I like the cover picture.  If they did that and heard the VOX, and if the arrangements are fresh and new and the production is first rate, they just might buy.

Just don't emphasize the covers.  I just do not think that is a smart marketing strategy.

OK, CHRISTIE.  I VOTE FOR THE SIZZLING HOT PIC ON THE COVER.  AND I HAVE SEEN YOU TAKE MANY OF THOSE. :thud :thud  I THINK THE COVER PIC IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT.  PEOPLE HAVE TO SEE CLAY AS HE IS NOW AND NOT THE WAY HE WAS 3 YEARS AGO.

I JUST HEARD THE ETTA JAMES VERSION ON FRIDAY.  IT IS AMAZING.  I WONDER WHAT CLAY COULD DO WITH IT.  HM.

They just wouldn't release them this early; they'll wait 'til the drop date and tour start are closer.

Gwenn, I agree.  The bottom line is we have no control over the CD other than to buy it or not.  I, personally, think this could be a great CD.  No, it's not what I originally wanted, but this is what we get and I have to trust they know what they're doing.  At this point, we'll just have to wait and see.

Gwenn, Lorrie, I agree completely.  We're getting a CD.  It may not be what we originally hoped for, but I have no doubt it will be good, great even if that blurp Clayharmony posted from Calliek is accurate.  I'm verrrrry excited right now, and I plan on remaining so!  I don't want to guess what's on the album....guessing is a waste of time.  I imagine the songs have already been decided on....or let's hope they have.  :para

My guess is a FEW of the tour dates have been TENTATIVELY set, dependent upon the CD release date.  He's still in the studio recording so anything can happen.  Since nothing about the release date is written in stone, I doubt any tour dates are either.  Even GMA is TBA.

All I know when they finally do have the dates written in stone I hope they release the entire schedule at one time so we can plan.  Otherwise its just a mess.

Christie, that is most definitely a valid concern we all share.  Vacations, visits to relatives, etc. are all not being planned until THE ??? TOUR dates are announced.  Please let it be soon!   :cross There's one family wedding in Alabama I'm hoping I can miss due to "another important commitment that day". :para 

Two things I am certain of:

Well I agree with one of those three - that I can't wait until its released because I am very curious about it.  As for #1 - I didn't learn to love each and every song on MOAM so I doubt I will love every song on this CD.  And I have no plans to buy this CD for anyone for Christmas.  My only friends who would like Clay are already buying it for themselves and I do not like to hoist it upon those who are not Clay fans.  I am not into trying to Clayvert people.  If someone asks me about the CD and wants to hear it that's one things, but I know not everyone likes him and you know what?  That's ok.  That's why there is such a variety of music out there.  Something for everyone!

I also won't be buying multiple copies of the CD.  I only bought one MOAM.  That was all I needed.  Why would I need more than that?  If this is a dual disc (and since everything else about the CD has chnaged since we heard that, that may have changed too), and they release it both in dual disc and regular format I will likely buy one of each because dual discs don't play in all CD players, such as car CD players.  But if its only released in one format or the other, I will only buy one.

Why buy 7 CDs just to boost his sales falsely?  I would rather put that money toward a concert ticket! But that's just me.

I agree that speculation as to the tracks on the CD would be a waste of time at this point.  When you are looking at 25 years worth of music- well, that's a heckuva lot to pin down (I think Clay said that in his blog)

I was truly impressed by what he could do during the JBT tour- so I KNOW that whatever Clay picks will be wonderful. I do hope, however, that most of them are ones we have NOT heard him sing yet. This way they will be new to us, too.

I've never followed a singer before Clay so excuse my ignorance.  Isn't it common practice for a big tour promoting a new CD to be announced at one time by the label or the performers management?  The IT was Clay's first big tour after his album and all those dates were announced at one time.  Also, I know that Rascal Flatts announced all their dates at once (they have an awesome fanclub too though).

Anyone have any insight from other artists?  I was under the impression this was normal except when doing an off-year/non-CD tour such as the JBT.

I bought several of MCWL because I knew I would be giving them away "as the spirit moved me".  Even my 2 cleaning girls got them for Christmas gifts in addition to a gift certificate to Chili's.  Come to think of it, my hair stylist and manicurist also got one for Christmas and that's what we talk about when I come in for appointments.  My manicurist is always asking me when I'm going to pose with my Midwest concert buddies in front of the sign at Climax, Michigan en route to our Michigan concerts.  We have a good time with it---I like to share with others what makes me happy!!!  So I can assure you that I have NEVER bought multiple copies of CD's just to boost his sales!!

And I am quite busy working on my concert fund---haven't completely given up on piano teaching yet---after all, that's my Clay income!!  :lol

So I had to go to an endocrinologist today because of my diabetes. I won't bore you with the details

But... had to go to the drive up teller on my way to work. Now, I have been having trouble with blurry eyes. So while the teller was doing my transaction, I tried to read the signs around the window. Wanted to test which eye was worse- so I closed one eye, then the other. Several times.

Suddenly I had a strange feeling. The teller was staring at me........she thought I was winking at her!!!

She told me to have a VERY GOOD DAY! and I took my receipts and slunk away in my car.

If she had been a man I might have got a date out of it!!

Clandy, I don't know the answer to that, but I'll check with my younger son (the one out at USC in LA).  He's pretty knowledgeable about rock and jazz concerts (and has the low bank account to show for it!)

I thought the song choices for the JBT were hit and miss.  I thought his song choices for the 60's were awful.  The most influential group of all time, the group who changed the face of popular music for all time, The Beatles, and all he sang was a couple lines of "Can't Buy Me Love"??  The 60's had some of the best music ever - especially the late 60's - and he chose fluff, IMO, except for the Motown stuff.  He did very well with the 50's.  He did ok with the 70's, 80's and 90's.  I still can't believe I had to hear him sing "Mandy"!!  Blech!  And the whole damn song at that!

Its interesting reading the song ideas many are coming up with.  What a range!  Some make me want to run away screaming Noooooooooooooo at the top of my lungs, others sound intriguing and others sound great, but I know he'll never do them.  Its actually fun speculating (how about some of the soulful sounds of Hall and Oates, for example?), but that's all it is.  I just hope he does NOT do all slurpy, syrupy, ballads.   I think that would just make me scream!

I guess we'll just have to be patient awhile longer.  For now, I guess I will just keep counting my ever increasing number of wrinkles for entertainment!  :lol

Clay explained during each show that the song choices were not supposed to be a representation of the most popular or influential music during that time. Instead, the songs we heard were what he and the others considered to be some of their favorites from each decade....

I understand that and that is actually my point.  I don't think Clay always makes very good choices in music.  Of course, he isn't the only one making the song choices for his CD, so that gives me some hope....... Maybe......

Well, Christie - I guess this bodes well for the CD since he is picking songs from the latter part of that range and more!

  I sort of missed hearing some other choice Beatle tunes  at the JBTas well but, they might not have been allowed to be used at that point. I just read that Michael Jackson (who bought the rights from Paul and then refused to sell them back to him when asked to..It began the feud between them) has agreed to sell the portfolio to Sony  in some kind of deal to ward off his bankruptcy. I agree with Gwenn -- I LOVE CLAY AIKEN.  HE IS DEFINITELY HOT.

I am also excited about the CD.  A CD with covers would not have been my first choice but I'll be the first to admit that Clay can sing a song in his special way and make it his own.  If he does that with the covers on this CD, I'm sure I'll love them.  I always love to watch the montages "How Good is He".  Every time I watch I am amazed at how much better his versions sound (with only a couple of exceptions) than the original.  I remember when Neil Sedaka sang "Solitaire" but I did now remember how soft and quiet it was in the original.  Even Neil admitted that "Solitaire" would forever belong to Clay.  If he can transform a few more like that I will be ecstatic with the CD.  I also love Clay's version of "Suspicious Minds".

I also hope the tour is announced at the same time.  I hope this is before plane fares go up much more.

Considering the way this week started,  I sure think things have taken a turn for the better and  I choose to believe that they will get even better as the days go by until we finally have the CD.

Thea - My family loves Blazing Saddles too! When I was still at my parents house, we'd watch it as a family (another family movie is "Vegas Vacation"). My mother falls asleep and has never seen the entire movie of "Blazing Saddles" to this day. It hilarious!  :lol

I've been listening to some of my other music lately from when I was growing up(even before we got Clay's blog). I'm just about a year and a half younger than Clay. I know these won't be on the CD, because they are women singers, but did anyone listen to The Motels in the eighties? They had some great songs : Suddenly Last Summer, Only the Lonely, Take the L. Good music to listen to if you get a chance. Another group that my parents listened to that they turned me on to.  :lol Of course, we listened to a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pat Benetar and Joan Jett in the eighties too.  :clap

I think that sums up what a lot of fans want. We want all of it for Clay just because we love him so much and respect his talents. If that comes for him, we will be proud. We will be happy.
But if he does get recognition for what he loves doing, well, thats the plus side

What I love most about Clay, and is in a sense another comment on Christie's insights, is that CLAY has always been and always will be "out of the box."

His career and choices will naturally follow that pattern.  Once you accept that,you can relax and enjoy the ride..

That is  just fine with me  as I've always admired those that step up, out and dare to be themselves..OUT OF THE BOX is a GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD to live in!!

Actually, since its not done yet, we don't even know whether or not he will be proud of it!  I HOPE he is, but he needs to finish it first before we can find out!

Unfortunately (and it really is unfortunate) non of us really know Clay.  We know what he's told us.  He said he excited about the CD.  I have to believe he is.  Whatever direction he has chosen for this project, I know, at least vocally, it will be outstanding.  Whether it's what we wanted is a mute point right now......it's what we're getting.  I will support him on this no matter what.  And, I'm getting extremely excited about this CD.  It'll be interesting to see how he interprets some of the songs from the past two decades.  And I'm really curious about the new "gems".   :smile

Just a comment on multiple purchases of the CD.  I refuse to copy Clay's CD for my own use or to give away.  I tend to be a bit lazy about carrying it around from place to place and so I get one for the house, one for my car, one for hubby's car, and one for my portable CD player because I like to take walks with Clay....that is 4 for starters.

I always buy one for my cousin...she can afford her own, but likes the surprise of getting something in the mail and Clay is a good gift.  I buy one for the secretary at my school just because she always asks about Clay and she does a lot of things for me when I work there.....now I am up to 6.

I buy one for the guy who cuts my hair because my liking Clay is a source of conversation between us and because his girlfriend is a fan and also because he plays it in the salon and everyone hears it and wants to know who is singing and then goes out and buys their own.

Looks like 7 copies for me to start with.  Hope that is ok. :lol

I'm really enjoying this discussion of our motives for buying multiple Clay CD's.  My story is simple:  I buy multiple Clay CD's never really thinking at the time about who the recipients will be.  But somehow the opportunities have always arisen to give a CD to somebody who really "needed" to hear something beautiful and inspiring. That was especially true this past Christmas when I gave a copy of MCWL to a friend of mine who has a very troubled teenage daughter.  A couple of days after giving her the CD, this friend called me to say that her daughter has been playing "Mary Did You Know?" over and over again, and that "this has restored peace to our home".   That's good enough reason for me.

Tessie, for what it's worth, it's more than OK with me!!  :wink

Oops...thanks Lora...you mentioned your MIL which made me think of my daughter's MIL who likes Clay.  I guess I will buy one for her because she is nice and I like to keep peace in the family.  Either I will give it to her or daughter and her hubby will.

I had a great time tonight. Christopher and I went to a place called Boulton Center - small intimate theatre.
One of the girls I work with belongs to a drum circle- bongo's etc. My son Chris has played with them, too.
So she brought two drums with her. The opening act was the drum circle. Donna gave me a tambourine to play.
We did "Saints go marching in" "Iko, Iko" ( I think thats what its called) a fast paced "Amazing Grace" and a few others- it was really exhilirating!!

Then the real act was called Jack's Waterfall. Lead guy Jack, drummer, string  bass player, and a saxaphonist who was fantastic.

They were mostly blues type music, but he did some spanish music and ended with Rolling Stone's "You can't always get what you want.
Jack plays piano and lead/rhythm guitar- extremely well.
His voice was good when it was "soft" but I didnt like when he hardened the voice- it grated a little. But man, this guy could hold a note forever!! He is about 5 foot 3- short.
But the whole evening was great! I didn't stop moving in my chair- and I was the first one up for the standing ovation!
Something really different!

And tomorrow- my brother, sister and I are going to see Dick Clark's boys- Fabian, frankie Avalon, and Bobby Rydell!
Yes, I was in love with Fabian. Funnily enough- I never bought a single one of his records- or Frankie Avalons

I did buy VOLARE though- by Bobby Rydell

Heck- two nights out in a row! I will have to have complete bedrest on Sunday to recuperate!!

I especially appreciate it because, it has been sort of a melancholy day for me.  Today was my last day being employed by the company at which I began my career when I first moved to Raleigh, back in the day. 

I was offered a severance package last week, and I accepted it.  I've not been happy there for ages; it was time.

I've known for the past two weeks, and all that time I've been thinking about what I can do, what I want to do, and what I should do.  My brain hurts from all the thinking actually. Or was it all those brewskis I imbibed at the Bo show last evening?  Hmm...

Anyway, today, I received a phone call from the general manager of the Raleigh office of my (former) company's major competitor, and they want to see me next week.

Just to talk, but still.  It made me feel good.  The point of this story is not for you to feel you must offer consolation; I'm actually very excited about the change, and not upset at all!  But the point is to suggest that sometimes, when you least expect it, something happens that makes everything OK.  Maybe not perfect, maybe not ideal; but OK.  Even good.... :wink

I feel good about Clay's CD.  Any fame he may desire seems to be mostly for the purpose of maintaining the influence he has in his altruistic endeavors.  Hey, that's fine with me. 

As long as he keeps singing and enjoying it.  I never really thought he wanted to be supahstah*!* just that he wanted to be successful.  But, what do I know?  Nuttin honey.

I admit to being a little disappointed to hear about the greatest love song theme.  I am incredulous that in over a year, JF(L) was unable to help Clay find ten good songs out of "five or six" CDs worth of songs.  But, whatever. 

I would rather have good "previously sung songs" that provide a showcase for Clay's voice than a bunch of generic pop pap designed for radio play, if that's all they were able to find. 

Seeing Bo Bice perform the other night was quite enlightening.  When singing songs from his recent CD, he did well, but you could tell his heart wasn't really in the music.  However, when he sang "Little Pink Houses," "Whipping Post," and "Free Bird...."  well, he was on fire.

I SO enjoyed the old songs Bo performed more than his current ones.  While it's true I'm not familiar with them, except "The Real Thing," the only one I really liked was "U Make Me Better."  Bo is a rocker, and he shines when he gets to rock out.  Clay is a singer, and I think he will fare just fine if he just gets to sing.

I hope the songs are great, the arrangements are quality and production is balanced.  I think it will be.  They've had enough time to get it right, after all!  :lol

You all know I am against buying multiple CDs without a REAL purpose (and Carol, I can't believe you have to have a separate one for your portable CD player!  :lol) .  I am not out to force feed Clay on anyone because not everyone will like him anymore than I would like it if someone I knew loved gangsta rap and started giving me CDs of that!

But a real concern of mine about this multiple CD buying is how it falsely inflates Clay's sales figures.  This does him no favors exceot to help pad his bank account a bit (and RCA's and Clive's even more).  It would be nice to know how many people REALLY buy his CD.  And the critics KNOW Clay's fans have a need to buy multiple CDs and this also takes away from the impact of his sales.

That said, may I ask a favor of all you multiple CD buyers out there?  Could you spread out your purchases a bit?  A great first weeks sale is only impressive if the CD has legs and keeps selling.  I would rather this CD sells less its first few weeks but continues to sell well for a long time than to have a blockbuster first week and then have it quickly slide off the charts as MOAM did.   So if you're buying say 10 CDs, could you buy a couple the first week and a couple a few weeks later etc, etc,etc??????

Pamela- I found out this week (one of the bosses accidentally let it drop** while in my office-) that we may be being taken over by another company. The mismanagement from department heads has put us in an awkward position- and we lost money because of it.

I was concerned then, because I have been there the longest other than the bosses (BUT I am paid a lot less than those managers that came after me)
I spoke to our compliance officer in depth and he seems to think that the managers we have left (including me) should be ok because we are the larger of the two companies and as managers we have way more experience that those at the other company.

But still- its very scary- and not a decision I want to have to make- stay or go!

My other observation is again about multiple CD purchases.  One of the concerns, as I read it, is that people want Clay to attract new fans.  What difference does it make if someone new buys his CD or if I buy 10 copies and give them to 10 people?  It is the same number of CD's after all.

Some people want Clay to have the highest first day sales.  Some people want him to have the highest presale order numbers.  Some people want him to have the highest first week sales.  Some people want him to be at #1 for a long time.  Some people want to stretch his sales out over a longer period of time.

Lot to think about and lots of decisions to make. :lol

To me its more SIGNIFICANT if someone new CHOOSES to buy his CD than if someone buys 10 and gives them away.  The people they are being given to may not really want one or have any desire to have one.  If someone new chooses to buy one, it must because they have heard something from it they like.

As for the sale nmbers, for the CD to truly be a success and to have the CD truly be attracting new fans, it has to keep selling strong for a lengthy period of time.  The people most likely to buy it right away are already fans, dying for his new CD.  What happens after that will depend on how many new people hear it and like it.  That to me is the better indicatior of it being a successful CD than blockbuster first week sales. 

I hate to use Kelly Clarkson as an example once again, but her CD's first week's sales, while very healthy, were actually less than the first week sales of "Thankful".  But here we are about 1-1/2 years after the release of "Breakaway" and the CD is still on the charts!  Now that is phenomenal and I really do not expect that to happen with Clay, but what that says to me is that each and every week she is gaining new fans of her music.  I would be thrilled if Clay could stay on the charts for even 6 months!  That to me would indicate he was successfullly expanding his fan base.

Yeah, and it's starting to give me a headache!  Well, I have a lot of headaches anyway, but you know what I mean.  :lol 

Everybody has an opinion, and that's fine. The botton line is, everyone is going to do whatever they feel like doing anyway.  When Clay snarks about our endless discussions, I know exactly what he means.  The boards go on and on about not much of anything.  Why doesn't he just blog about what he wants us to do?  Usually when Our Master :lol speaks,  the majority follows.  Yes, I know, there are some who don't, but the man gets people to do so much with just a few words.  :roflmao

Yeah, but its going to take more than "US" to make this CD a success.  And not matter how many CDs you buy and no matter whether you buy them all the first week or spread them out, it will still take more than "US" to make the CD a success. 

By the way, last night I posted a link to Amazon.com where they are now selling a 2007 Clay calendar.  I just read its now up to #2! The Clay Nation seems to really, really want to spend their money one Clay, don't they!  :lol

I think that there may be "quite" a few people motivated to buy the sophomore CD for themselves because a friend or relative initially introduced Clay's music to their ears by giving them MOAM or MCWL.  Which it seems to me, with the lack of radio play, may just be an ingenious way to nurture the growth of the fandom.  Without radio play, it's extremely difficult to maintain steady sales figures.  Kelly's continued sales are a direct result of radio play and marketing to a hot demographic.  Comparing her success to Clay's success is like comparing apples to oranges......different genre, gender, appeal, etc.  They are both successful.....arriving at that end result through their unique avenues.  Neither avenue is any more worthy of significance or accolades than the other........the end result is success. 

Fans sharing their love for Clay's music with their friends and family may be the only opportunity that many people have to hear his talent.   MOAM received limited radio play, therefore, the opportunity for fandom growth was affected.  Fans spreading the word by introducing Clay's music to perspective new fans seems logical.  It's like the old Lady Clairol concept.....you tell two friends, who will tell two friends, and so on and so on.  To me, gifting CD's to nonfans may be instrumental in helping the fandom to grow.  It also allows people to share a part of themselves with people they love.......sort of saying this is the man I've been involved with for the past three years.  This is what makes me happy.  I agree, giving a CD to someone who does not want it is not a good thing. Politely asking before hand is good thing.   However, giving one to someone receptive does not seem to me to be a "bad" thing.  People have the choice to listen or to throw it in the trash.  That's no different than the chance you take if you buy it yourself.  I've purchased many CD's that I wish I wouldn't have that sit in the CD stand, never to be played again.  Some people may never buy CD's for themselves because of such past experiences.  You never know how someone's life will be affected by such a giving gesture. How do we know we aren't supposed to be some sort of medium in enhancing someone's life by introducing them to Clay's soulful voice?   :lol We could actually be depriving someone of the similar happiness that we have been enjoying the past three years.   :shappy  Who are we to mess with the UNIVERSE?   :wink 

Having the opportunity to have Clay's voice touch someone's soul may add another number to the fandom and it may not.  Is it really that significant who purchased the CD?  Money is money no matter who hands it over.  Do we only deem Clay successful if everyone who was initially gifted buys this one?  Perhaps the percentage of fans who were introduced to the fandom in this way and jumped on board is higher than we think?  Should we count the number of people who were gifted who didn't come on board and subtract those CD's from the sales total?  :lol It's all a crap shoot.  

I don't have a problem with anyone buying as many copies of the CD as they feel appropriate.  Myself....I bought 3 MOAM.....1 for home, 1 for work and 1 for my niece who asked me to buy it for her birthday, who inturn bought MCWL for herself.  I bought 1 MCWL and wish I would have bought another because when I was walking on my treadmil  I fell off and the earphones yanked the CD player across the floor and the dang CD flew out of the player and catapulted across the room and now the label is all scratched up.  Still sounds good, but it ain't pretty any more.  :cry  I digress.    Buy 1 copy or 1,000.....do what makes you happy.  :smile

ETA:  I forgot I bought MCWL for my hairdresser (she had never heard of Clay), because she was going to be singing MDYK in church and I thought she might like to hear Clay's version.  She LOVED the CD so much she bought copies for her own family member and also bought MOAM.  NOw, that was a gift that kept on giving and giving.  :wink

I remember the first time that I heard the AI2 finalist singing "What The World Needs Now...Is Love Sweet Love".  I said to myself "ain't that the truth".  I am tired of songs full of protest, anger, loss, dispair and PMS.  They make me cranky.  The world is long overdue for a good dose of love, hope, and faith.  I really hope that music is beginning to shift its gears .  If Clay is jumping on the positive bandwagon....... I will circle the said wagon and ride over the tumbleweeds with him.  Love songs????   I have always believed that Clay Aiken IS all about LOVE anyway.   Boyfriend is just doing what comes au natural.  Clay's road to success is going to be bumpy.  He takes chances.  He sticks to his principles. He refuses to sell out.  And, he IS way ahead of his time.  But you know what....Clay is going to make his mark.    Speaking of......!

Speaking of CD's ... there is nothing we can really do about attracting new fans.  I don't see how our buying multiple copies during the first week will influence new fan sales one way or the other.  New fans are what is needed to give the CD legs.  Whether we string our sales along, or buy all the CD's during the first week, we alone can't keep ablum sales to a maximum.  Hopefully, people who have forgotten him, will remember him and want to buy the CD after he starts appearing on promotional television shows.  That is all we really can hope for to increase his sales.

Well, from someone who has Clayverted many with gifts of MOAM and MCWL (I think I single handedly sold 50% of the Sewell JNT venue to family and friends who were the recepients of said CD's), I don't think there's anything wrong with buying multible copies and passing the love around.  These people will now go out and buy his second album, and hopefully pass it along to their family and friends.

Pamela,  My best wishes are with you.  I can remember when my company closed 2 1/2 years ago, I was real concerned about finding a job at my age.  Then one Friday night, the man that hired me at that company 26 years before, and had since started his own company, called me and after several discussions offered me a job.  The hours are long but the pay is good so in that respect, I am lucky.  Since you are much younger, I am sure you won't have any problem finding something.   I just hope it is something you really want.

ANOTHER INTERESTING THING--TIM MCGRAW'S LATEST SINGLE IS A COVER OF ELTON JOHN'S "TINY DANCER."  NOT SUNG COUNTRY AT ALL BUT MUCH LIKE ELTON DID WITH ORCHESTRA, ETC.  SO I GUESS THE COVER THING IS HITTING ALL FACETS.  HIS WIFE, FAITH HILL, DID A COVER OF JANIS JOPLIN A FEW MONTHS AGO--"TAKE ANOTHER LITTLE PIECE OF MY HEART".  IT WASN'T GOOD TO ME, BUT IT WAS A BIG RADIO HIT.

I just hung up on a friend who went to see the previews of TARZAN yesterday. It is opening on Broadway in a couple of weeks.. I thought it was Elton J who wrote the score, but it was Phil Collins. Anyway, she called me as the "AI" maven..(expert) to ask me what I knew about JOSH STRICKLAND... He is the lead and she said has an amazing voice..  I think he was in Season 2 but I don't really remember him.. Anyone know anything??

I think the difference between most everyone who is coming out with a CD that at least contains some covers is they are established artist who already have a "style" and, for that matter, a career.  Plus, they don't carry the AI/karaoke baggage like Clay does.

But here is something far more important.  Apparently someone on the CB had a Clay sighting recently and was reporting his hair was long.  Then I read this update at the CH:

I love long hair on guys too!!!!!  I watch the soaps and some of the hunkiest guys are the ones with long hair.  On General Hospital one of the guys let his hair get long, and he was looking so good!.   One day, he cut it ALL off. :eek He didn't look nearly as cute as he did with the longer hair.  I can't imagine Clay with long hair, but I think it could be a great look.  I want to see it......WHERE IS HE!!!!!!!!

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I never liked long hair on guys.  I'm keeping an open mind though.  I just hope it's not that real dark brown color that he had in Hawaii.  IMO, he  looks washed out with hair that dark.  Personally, I think the best hair to date was AC JBT hair.  Second best was Charlotte/Raleigh hair.  At this point, I just want to see him!

Which brings me to bad news - they have filled in the TBA for August 4th and its not Clay.


Only 2 TBA's left.  One is June 16th and the other is July 21st.  Why do I have a feeling there will be no Clay this summer.  :cry

The release date hasn't changed.  I LOVE their lead single and I say GOOD FOR THEM!  I had read somewhere before that they would be marketed more to the non-country stations because they just knew the country stations would still have a stick up their rear-ends over their very astute and heartfelt comments of THREE YEARS AGO!  Geez!  Ever hear about free speech you country stations?  Not to mention it was three fricken years ago!!!!!

They had a couple of cross-over hits last album so I bet they'll do just fine without being marketed primarily to the narrow minded jerks in the country world (Of course this in no way is meant to imply that everyone who likes country music is a narrow minded jerk!  :wink)

As for Clay and GMA - there are still 2 open TBA dates and one date for some reason completely left off the calendar (Aug. 18th), so there is still hope - however dim it may be.

Not just stepping outside the box, but sprinting outside the box.

I have no idea how or if this will impact Clay's release date. But I did something fun today - spent some time going through all my old albums from the 70s and 80s.... and wow.  Best.music.ever!  Here's a short list of what I've been listening to today:

Steely Dan, Donovan, Blood Sweat & Tears, Pretenders, Stray Kats, Harry Nilsson, B52s, Eagles, Devo (HA!), Dire Straits, Heart and lots of bands that are still kickin - REM, U2, Police/Sting etc etc...what a flashback!  Good times.  Good songs.

Dixie Chicks - always loved their song "Wide Open Spaces" but don't know much more about them.  I did respect them more after they had to suffer oppression and censorship after expressing their political opinions though.  Agree or not, I could have sworn this was America, where such things were allowed....last time I checked anyway.  I know they didn't care over in the UK.

Buying tickets has always been a pain the the butt so I didn't expect anything different.  I tried to buy tickets to Wicked last week.  As soon as they went on sale to the general public, they were already sold out.  There is definitely a big problem in the ticket buying system.  As we know, it's pretty unfair.  Ticket brokers always manage to get the good seats.  I know it's going to be a big headache just the same as it's been in the past.  :bang

YOU ARE SO RIGHT, LORRIE.  I JUST WANT TO HAVE THAT ANGST RIGHT NOW.  I WISH THERE WERE TICKETS TO BUY FOR HRH.  I GUESS WE ARE USED TO IT.

The ticket auction thing is not new.  Auctions are available for many artists now and were available for Clay at some venues, perhaps all, for his JNT 2 tour.  They were/are available for the Tim McGraw/Faith Hill show being booked not.  That auction involves a pre party which the artists will attend and a post show acapella serenade by Tim for the winning bidder.  There were many very high bids put in very quickly.  I looked into them for hubby who loves Tim/Faith.  They went past what I was willing to pay very quickly.

Is this the angst of the day? Or just of the morning?

Sure, I'd love to get tickets in the first few rows for every concert I go to. I'd love for Clay to smile at me, wink at me, sing to me, sit in my lap, and propose marriage--or at least, a honeymoon. :wink

Chances are, that isn't going to happen. Life goes on. I'll still try for tickets, and take the best I can get. If they're 3rd tier, way in the back, I can choose to use them or not. Just like I can choose to stress over this new rumor about TicketMaster. I choose not to. There are more important things in my life than whether it's unfair that those with more "disposable income" will have a better chance at close seats (which they already do, through eBay and brokers).

Besides, he probably won't invite them on a honeymoon, either. :wink

I for one am not angsting.  I never angst over ticket sales.  They are what they are.  They are a royal pain in the ass, but what are you going to do?  If you want to go to a concert, you have to deal.  For me, its sort of like a game.  Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose!  I do wish the brokers didn't get to fix them game, though.

Now, there are certain concert buddies of mine, who shall remain nameless, who do tend to angst BIG TIME.....  :wink :lol

HATE both those songs.  Then again, that time period is one of my least favorite in music.  But Clay loved Peter Cetera so you never know.  My greatest worry about this CD is I don't have a lot of faith in Clay's taste - in music, in clothes, in hair styles.  So I am a wee bit skeered about his song selection.  Guess we'll find out eventually.

I like long hair, but it looks rather nerdy there with the part.  Problem is, I don't like middle parted hair much better and combed straight back like the TV Guide cover makes him look too old fashion.  And I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE the glasses!!

And anyway, to me- let him look the way he wants to- I am sure concert Clay will be just as HOT! He always is! This was just a small off the cuff appearance while he was on hiatus. Probably didnt know the picture would be taken.
He wears his hair differently every time he does a different appearance. I think its cool- again, he is like a chameleon.

And the glasses- I prefer him without them- my least favorite was when he sang Solitaire on Leno around the "Fantasy" time. But- the man does need them - and sometimes he is HOT in them too- remember the "dont take a picture of my butt" getup in New Hampshire?

He always keeps us guessing. And since the tour is months away- he may change yet again- who knows!

Regarding Clay's looks.  I LOVE THE JBT HAIR but right now I would settle for most anything.  As for the glasses, Marilyn is right.  He looked very hot and sexy in the glasses in NH.  And then when he was talking to Terry, he was so cute and having such a good time that he was sexy also.  Or I guess I just think he is sexy regardless.

Maybe the long hair is a type of disguise until he gets ready for people to see him again.  I really hope he doesn't change drastically.  I seem to remember a picture taken at the Pacific Rim conference and he didn't have spiky hair, it was parted and combed down a little so maybe that is his look for serious occasions.

I think when we see him perform live his personality shines through so it really doesn't matter what his hair looks like or if he is wearing glasses or not.

The Clay we saw in that pic was NOT a public appearance. But he was clean, his hair was combed, he was dressed right PURTY! And I assume he polished his glasses.  But imagine what the VOICE sounded like!! I always get chills when I hear him sing SSB!!

I reiterate- the concert CLAY is HOT HOT HOT-no matter how he looks. And I think his hair was pretty long in the SOLO tour.
