JOANN, glad you and Jennie had a fun day.  It is good for her to get out I know, even once a week is good.

PRISSY, will be waiting for the Soul Food Supper menu.  You always have a great supper.  You are so generous to everyone and you have such a great heart always wanting to help someone.  You are like me I can't stand watching those poor animal ads on TV either neither does my hubby he turns the channel also.

SHARON, anything you chose to do the people would be lucky to just have you around sometimes.  I sure do wish I had someone like you as a neighbor like your Mary is to you .

See everyone tomorrow.

Still nothing at the OFC!

lolita -  Laughing I read several of those to Lewis  Wink

JoAnn - how lucky you are to be able to spend the day with your Mom! I smile when you post about that - I loved going shopping with my Mom.

Sharon - the fake hot dog was WONDERFUL  Laughing I cooked it just the way I like (burned black) and it had lots of mustard on top. Only 3 WW points, too (one for the fat free hot dog, 2 for the low calorie bun). Just volunteer with whatever touches your heart. If we ever get our animal shelter open, I will be volunteering there. For a long time, I volunteered at our nursing home just polishing ladies finger nails. (I wasn't allowed to cut nails, because so many were diabetics - that had to be done by a nurse). All it took was a few bottles of polish so there would be a variety of choices, and some polish remover. Nursing homes are usually always glad to have animals visit, too. When Peanut and Scooter (my dogs) were little, they went to the nursing home all of the time. The only problem was that no one ever wanted them to leave, and they were exhausted when we got home from too much love!!!  Laughing

Pepe -  Huggles Huggles hope you get a good night's sleep. I finally opened two gift baskets we got for Christmas. There was a backage of creme brule coffee in one. I am enjoying a cup now - very good!

I will check in one more time before bed time - have a great evening, everyone.

Good Evening!

I just returned from Soul Food Supper.

Pepe, the menu was pork tenderloin with raspberry chipotle sauce, fingerling potatoes: yellow, red, and purple, green beans with bacon and almonds, tossed salad, and for dessert, heart shaped chocolate brownies drizzled with caramel sauce and walnuts!!
It is heart breaking to see the animals without homes.  I have a feeling we would have a third dog if the owners of the little dog Skip found on our street a few weeks ago had not come to retrieve her (Scarlet).

Sharon,
You have reminded me about the need of our seniors.  Skip, who is much better at directions than I am, has often volunteered to drive someone to a doctor's appointment; often a person at our church.
I know there are seniors in nursing homes that are lonely for visitors;  just someone to talk to.  We have a former member of the Woman's Club who is in a senior facility and still has an astute mind, and misses just normal conversations.
If each of us would take just a little time each week to visit a senior facility and get to know and visit with those that need this interaction, it would be a blessing to all!!

Lolita,
I just read all of the jokes!  Very funny!  lmao  And some very true!!   icon_eek

Frankie,
Thanks for the information about the Rotary Clubs and international water projects.  One of my nieces is a hairdresser in a nursing home.  After Christmas, I try to buy several of those big sets (on sale) of makeup with lipstick, fingernail polish, blush, etc., for her to "make-up" the seniors when she does their hair!!   I need to find more of those throughout the year!   I think the ladies enjoy having their face and nails done!!

Do you all remember Ty, the cute cowboy from DWTS, who is married to the singer, Jewel.?  Here is information about Jewel's water project.

JEWEL'S WATER PROJECT

I hope you all have a good evening.  I need to practice my violin and make cupcakes!!  bigsmile

      Glory,

I had  tummy and acid problems for several years and my doctor had me take one Nexium  a day.

Around 5oclock in the morning I take one with my thyroid medicine and it really has helped. I

put the three pills in a small container on the bathroom counter at night so when I wake early

I take them and go back to bed. you need to take them one hour before eating. I found they
                  helped me a lot.

                               Hope you feel better soon.

     Prissy,
The soul food sounded very interesting,  some of that food I had never heard of.

I also can't watch any thing that shows animals who are hurting and sad, if it comes on Tv
I block my ears and run out of the room. Why do people abandom  animals and treat them
so harshly. I took a man to court once because of that.

On the TV tonight it said that 200 Manatees died because of the cold,   they are such sweet creatures
so gentle. 4500 hundred  turtles were rescued  and 80% were saved. There are some good people
                         who help.

I respect and admire all of the unselfish acts of service performed by so many here.  Phil and I also do community service, and I'll leave it at that.  The way I look at service to others is that it's best done quietly and without asking for any attention or applause from others;   the only one we are accountable is our Maker, whom we will meet when we leave this earth.

I also have a room booked at the Marriott, but it remains to be seen whether or not I end up going.  hypnotic  I do have a feeling that there will be a lot of available rooms at the last minute!    Laughing

Thea,
I know you do a lot of community service because you have told us before.  The only reason I talk about it sometimes is I hope to inspire others on this site to get out of their routines and to get involved helping others because I know how fulfilling and how much happiness that can bring.    I hope you don't think I am asking for applause. I get enough of that playing in a quartet and orchestra! violin2 Wink   I think we would all be very interested in the community service that you do.  We all talk about what is going on in our lives,  the good, the bad, the ugly.  Laughing

Speaking of  "ugly," Laughing   I finally gave in and colored my hair.  The roots were about 3/4 inch grey.  My hair dresser could not work me in on Monday, and she said it would take as long as a perm to color my hair!  eek!  I called one of my sisters and she told me how to color just the roots at first, and it actually turned out well!  When I am in my 80's I may think about going grey! Laughing

PRISSY, I'm sorry if my post came across wrong.  I was just stating my current feelings on the subject.  If I offended anybody with my remarks, I apologize.   And I wasn't directing my comment at anybody in particular, but rather just expressing what was in my heart at the time.  This is just something I've been thinking about a lot lately.

Well, I need to get to bed early, as we leaving tomorrow morning.  PRISSY, not to worry about the roads or the Milwaukee airport.   Up here in these parts we have a way of getting the snow cleared away quickly and efficiently because we're so used to it! AARGH!  Anyway.... It looks like it's "all clear" weatherwise for the next couple days, although Saturday might bring a little snow!  Paranoid

Good night, all!

I’m glad you all like the jokes I posted…

JOANN, I have been a bad girl this week and I am wondering if I lost any weight at all. I guess I will have to work harder tomorrow to get ready for my scale comes Friday morning.

FRANKIE, yes, my brats fight too, especially Coco, she hates it when Wave gets close to her treats. But they do need referee as they could really injured each other… my next door neighbor aren’t home during the day to separate these dogs when they are fighting. When I called the animal control on them two  years ago, the fighting was one of the problem, one of the smaller dog was injured to the point that she just start crying when the other dog even look at her. I was so sick to the point of wanting to move out of this area. I know there is nothing that I can do and I don’t think I will ever call the animal control again, so I will learn to ignore and if and when things gets out of hand I’ll just let go of all my frustration here.

SHARON, no need for apologies, I enjoyed every bite of my donut. bigsmile BTW, volunteering as a driver for senior citizens is a great idea, I don’t know if there is Dial a Ride in your area, there are some in mine but they’re not really helping a lot of seniors as they have schedules to follow.

MISS BETTY, I do understand what you mean, I too am experiencing forgetfulness but MIL’s grandmother and father had dementia and all of MIL’s sisters are telling me and MIL’s three sons that MIL is becoming like their grandmother and father. I unfortunately never met my husband’s great-grandmother…I met and spent time with his grandfather before he was placed in a home and he died there but I never really noticed whether he had dementia or not.

THEA, I agree, one should never volunteer for attention and or praise…I have been praised but it was always followed with “Could you do this for us?” I’ve done a couple of job on a very short noticed and it gave me a lot of unnecessary headaches. Be safe on your travel…

PRISSY, I did a lot of volunteer work in my thirties and it was very fulfilling in most part. I say most part because I experienced being taken for granted…it was hard to stop as I have (always) a hard time saying no to people but when things got out of control my husband got involved and the rest is history. We give money to numerous organizations (ASPCA, Habitat for humanity International, Paralyzed American veterans, Riverside Mission, Los Angeles Mission, Salvation Army and Veterans of America) we give what we can every year. You and Skip are doing great helping people, I read a lot about Meal in Wheels and the receiving parties are very appreciative. BTW, I too walk away from those animals commercial you mentioned…it is very hard to watch it. BTW, my neighbor only speak Spanish, I had planned to have my MIL talk to them when she visited but it did not happen as they never seem to be home.

PEPE, I wish we were all neighbors…I can just imagine all the good things we could all do for each other, not to mention all the tasting of our cooking.

JAN, I am next with dental works and I am dreading it already. I have to wait after MIL’s surgery though.

Special Hello to Glory, Kelly, Michelle, Jayne, Miss Carol, Angela, Sasha and the rest…you all have a good evening.

 wave

Thanks, Betty - you saved me another trip over to the OFC to check on word from His Clayness!  Laughing Surey there will be word "soon". Most people need some notice before committing to a trip.

Laney goes back to Houston tomorrow to have her ear checked after surgery - she could use a few Claymaniacs prayers, especially since the weather night be bad. I hate to think of my kids in Houston traffic (sorry, dudley!), especially if there is bad weather.

I haven't mentioned what projects we are interested in to draw attention to us. We get busy and don't do half what we should. I think it is interesting to hear about what others are doing in their own communities.  New ideas might be something that would work here. Prissy - I "did" nails on Thursday afternoons, because that day was the day the beauty shop was open at the nursing home. It was so much fun - ladies would sit around having coffee, having their nails done, etc., either before or after getting their hair done. Jennie and JoAnn mailed out an essay about "Hugs". What the essay said is so true - people need a loving, human touch. Just the practice of holding someone's hand while doing nails is sometimes just what someone needs - or sometimes just a quick visit makes all of the difference. I am so happy that the elementary schools work with the nursing homes here. The children visit all during the year. One really fun thing is that the children bring Mardi Gras parades to nursing homes. The kids make "floats"  (very often made from red wagons!) and walk up and down the halls throwing beads to the nursing home residents!  Laughing Clapping  I am going to go read the article on the water project. They seemed like such a nice couple. (When does DWTS begin again? I need to go look that up!)

Glory - I am glad you are seeing the doctor again tomorrow - glad that he is keeping a close watch on you. I do remember your many "adventures".  Laughing

I don't know if the weather will allow me to go "big" shopping in Alexandria tomorrow or not - won't know that until I get up in the morning. But if I am MIA, you will know where I am, and I will check in when I get home. Sweet Dreams, everyone!

Good Morning Sharon!  Thank you for the coffee!  Guess what!   IT'S SNOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got up at 5:30 to take Sammy outside and it is a WINTER WONDER LAND WITH A GENTLE SNOW FALLING AS I TYPE.  Sammy got "scared"  and had trouble finding a "spot" to go!    He ran back to me a few times before he decided that it was not going to "get" him.

I'm so glad that I'm retired because the school district did not close today!  It's funny, the local university, TCU, closed but no, the public schools are still open.  If I was a parent, my child would stay home today just because of the "crazy" drivers we have  when the weather gets bad here.

I would love to go to a nursing home with Sammy tagging along.  He is such a "people" dog.  I would just be afraid that he might try to "hug" them to death.  He is so heavy and rambunctious , he sometimes makes Mom bleed a little when he "plays" too hard.  She bleeds so easily, I would be afraid that some of the residents would too.

Clean water is really a big thing needed throughout the world.  Just in the past few days here, a neighboring town shut their schools down because the city developed a  problem with the  water system.  They closed the schools for 3 days because they would not allow the camodes to be flushed and people had to boil water before drinking until the  problem was solved.
In Peru, while on the Amazon, I saw "evidence" of bad water!  Most villages had no electricity,  so that was hard on clean water.  When we would be out on the skiff, our guides brought plenty of "extra" bottles of water.  When we would pull over and talk with the locals, the guide ALWAYS  gave each of them a bottle of water.  The smiles on those faces were priceless.
Have a great day today and stay safe and warm.

Naughty Naughty it would never enter my mind that anyone here doing community service would be asking for applause for doing it.  We talk about our lives and what we do to fill the time and how wonderful that a few of  us really open up so we know that person.  I think of a few here as God's angels, they are so special to me and it does my heart so much good knowing there are people like that on this earth.

PRISSY, what a wonderful Soul Food Supper!  I have never had the fingerling potatoes, they are very expensive here.  Do they really taste a lot different than the regular potatoes?  Love Pork tenderloin and the sauce on it sounded fantastic.  Did  you have a big turnout?

FRANKIE, think I will fix a pot of vegetable soup this morning for my supper tonight.  I did not have a good night last night was kind of sick.  Didn't know if I was sick to my stomach or wanting to pass out or what was going on but I am tired and a little nauseated but okay this morning.  Don't think I want anything heavy for dinner though.  I can see a nap in the future today.

DUDLEY, hope all is well with you today.  Is it snowing there too?

GLORY, yep you need to take a stomach acid pill in the morning.  I take one in the morning and one in the evening.

Going to take my friend shopping as she does"nt drive but I will be back in the early afternnoon.

I believe the other men in Meesa"s picture are the "CANADIAN TENORS'  they are also appearing
in Raleigh sometime. I bet Clay is tearing his hair out over the delay.

Stay in and keep warm what a crazy winter....we are down in the low 30s.
                                                                Betty
